These boats are the biggest rush to drive. I have a 130 mph boat and it is a thrill, nothing like these guys.

If you have not heard the national anthem followed by the rumble of top fuel hydros or dragsters you wouldnt understand the beauty and patriotism of drag racing period

Growing up, I use to go to them every year. It's a shame all the tree-hugging dirt people ruined it for everyone else.

I don't think 90% of the people understand just how hard these are to drive . If you ever get to see a race there are true daredevils . Tough fuel boats are straight from hell .

That stupid spoiler at the back of the boat is more dangerous than a necessity, as it presses down as the speed increases, forcing the front part of the hull to raise till it catches wind underneath and then the boat will be airborne. Who came up with that idea has to be nuts. It's not a drag car where the spoiler helps in keeping the rear wheel down to help it grip the tarmac better. This is a race boat not a race car.
Do experiments in a wind tunnel with a meter high water tank and you would thank me for saving your life and your boat. As the tunnel wind increases you will notice that the wing (spoiler) is pressing down the rear part of the boat and the nose raising a few inches. More wind speed in the tunnel and you're on danger zone because if the noses keeps raising the wind will go under the boat and will lift it and then toss it right out of the pool and out of the tunnel end. Normally this doesn't happen on wind speeds of 250mph in the tunnel on a boat without a rear spoiler as there is nothing to push down the rear, bar the engine which will act as a hold.
Add the spoiler and watch. However I wouldn't advise you increasing tunnel wind speed over 200mph. Do that on the lake where the boat will probably flip up and crash.
You have to remember how air/wind dynamics and boat design/physics work.
The propeller is under the rear of the boat, if it is a V-drive, the engine is behind and that also increases weight/gravity that cause the nose to raise. Next, you have that spoiler that also pushes the boat down.
As the wind pushes the spoiler back, it forces the nose to further lift.
But on the lake, the incredible torque and forward thrust by the angry engine, the nose is in serious danger to lift and flip back. Since this occurs around take-off and the nose lifts, there is nothing to worry yet because the boat is not at full speed yet for the spoiler to take effect. That is just the propelled doing the lift. It's when the boat is at higher speed that helps the boat to receive enough lift as the spoiler keeps pressing the rear down. Any waves, washes or ripples hitting the front of the hull will tend to lift it and allowing it to plane until the air under builds up to a flight stage. If the boat is balanced nothing will happen (many race boats have a pair or more stabilizing plates fitted at the rear to help minimizing the sinking of the rear part if the hull.
So, since the boat rear is heavier now, the spoiler is pressing down more and the fact that the huge dong is also heavy, chances are that the boat will plane with a tentency to flight. So the air pack under the front of the twin hull and , like a balloon of compressed air it will up-lift and get of control and then... you know the rest. I used to race boats but not hydroplanes, however on race meetings, there were a few of them around, racing under other classes. I have personally seen some hydroplane with parachutes, another crazy idea because race boats are not on a drag racing track where it is bitumen, this is water known as Liquid quarter mile, and parachutes fill with propeller spray and while the boats are still at high speed, the parachute pulls the boat to a stop faster than a normal stop and the boat nose will lift up. And because the boat is still at high speed, it will flip in the air while the chute, being full of water will pull it downward, resulting in a spectacular display that would mean the end of the driver. I have seen this myself on Lake Glenmaggie, Australia, during a race even in 1991. The driver was killed as the boat was on its way to the bottom. That's what parachutes would do with race hydroplane fitted with them. In my opinion, I don't recommend them, you've got all 3-5 mile long lake, what do you need parachutes for, to show off?

That's why I moved to Texas 36 years ago, California was going to shit even back then. What do you have against Jet Boats? They are actually the true drag boat because they leave the line quick and out accelerate most v drives, and isn't that the name of the game!
