Old John’s cabinet is aesthetic as hell. The patina and look of aged weathered wood is just something magical to me. Also for something like a “wine cabinet” something that gives the appearance of age seems to compliment the product going in it. Old looking cabinet=finely aged wine

Tough choice. Both cabinets excel in their own ways. John’s Boomer cabinet touts the classic rustic look screaming all sorts of characters with its many shades of brown yet very functional! Jon’s Millennial Jukebox is more elegant, chic with perfect proportions. I like both but if I’d have to pick a winner - it’s still the boomer cabinet only because I just like the rustic shaker style just a tad more! Overall- great video! Love the camaraderie between you!

Love this content. I used to have a neighbor named Bill who was a guy in his late 70s who restored airplanes at a local museum in his retirement. And he would bring me welding projects to work on for the planes. It was great having him as a neighbor. He also had every type of drillbit and random miscellaneous screw you could ever imagine so whenever I needed something I would just go next-door go to his garage and start rifling through his bins. It was great.

These build series are awesome. As a Gen-X just starting to get into woodworking (decided to finally build a bass from scratch that I’ve wanted to do for 35 years) I find myself planted directly between you too - somewhere between wanting to get every cut perfect and use every new tool I can get my hands on - and just getting it done with whatever I have around.
I hope you two continue to build together. It’s inspiring and nice to see the contrast between your styles.

It is amazing what a person can build out of wood if they learn the basics. I took a 3-day hand tools carpentry class at a school that focuses on old methods and skills. Several years later, I needed to build a barn for my goats: 12ft x 24ft. I did all the work by myself - a 65 year old female who had used my carpentry skills some but never to design and build such a large project. There was only one problem I had and ended up getting professionals to fix it was the tin roof. The roof sloped 3 inches across the narrow side of the building for rain run off. I tried to do it myself but had to call in professionals because my roof leaked and all the solutions I got from other builders didn't work. In less than 4 hours, the 2 men took the old tin roof off, put down 2 × 6s on top of my ceiling rafters and used longer sheets of tin. No more leaks. I used battery powered drill, hammer drill (fantastic toy - I didn't even know they existed), and circular saw. All of them cut through the 2×6s and the Smartboard I used as siding. I now just have to build the 2 dutch doors and and other 4 stalls on the other side. I had to wait for the building to dry out well after the leaks and to give my shoulders a rest from using the power tools. The goats love it and I have used it several times for first time goat moms to give birth in. The are protected from weather and predators. Thank you for encouraging everyone to stretch their imagination and built neat stuff!

I totally resonate with both of you. My shop was considerably better than John's but not nearly as complete as John's. No jointer/planer and only environmental dust collection. DeWalt rather than Ryobi. I didn't go for junk wood, but worked with what was around (often junk wood). I did have a decent collection of ancient hand tools -- my great grandfather was a master carpenter and my mother collected w/w tools. If you know what you're doing, you don't need all the fancy shit for solid accurate results. Or more importantly, fun.
Btw, compressed air in the shop is well worth it.

This content is wonderful. Thank you. My Neighbor John was a guy named George Auth. We had different ways of doing things, but I still treasure the things he taught me as a new homeowner and woodworker. Looking forward to future videos!

I really enjoy your channel - projects, content, and style. You consistently do an excellent job.
Your collaboration with Elder John (I'm closer to his age) is one of the most rewarding pieces of woodworking content I've ever seen. The cross-generational friendship you share is inspiring and gives me a vision of what I would like to be to my younger neighbors.

These collabs with Elder John won a subscribe from me as it showed more of you than previous videos. (Your big heart to not only work with a different generation, but call him friend.) Hopefully, we'll hear more about Elder John in the future. (His accent sounds much like my East coast NC family, so I'm really curious to know a bit more about this kind man.) Anyway, this boomer/gen x'er (on the cusp) thanks you both for showing how we really can find things in common across generations instead of just complaining about each other. And, thank you, young John for honoring his contribution to your woodwork in this way.

Really love these videos with Elder John so much! So glad to see him back! This was definitely a closer competition, but I'm going with John again. Loved the warmth of the piece and its poetry. There is something soulful in his creations.

More of these please Jon & John -- you're both great and I love the "slice of life" stuff. Jon's respect for John is inspiring and heartwarming -- I love the generosity too -- thank you. I'm looking forward to the next one of these, and the next -- you've got something really good going on here.

Both projects are beautiful and I would be proud to have either in my house. But the rustic look of John’s wine cabinet speaks to me a little more (which pains me, since I love the Easter egg of the painting at the back of the whiskey cabinet!). Thanks for an awesome video!! 👍👍👍

What an awesome video. This was a perfect blend of showcasing a couple of builds, entertainment and humor from both Jon and John, and proof that it is indeed the craftsman and not the equipment that makes a quality build.

Elder John??? Did the cockroach notice the difference in the furniture???? 😂 I just love your simplicity and laidback disposition…. Your little humorous comments had me in stitches!!! Keep up the good work!!! You remind me of my furniture building grandfather!!! Old time carpenters are fantastic and we stand to learn a great deal from them!!!! Young John, love your channel and subscribing!!!! Keep making more videos!!

Oh you are so lucky to have a neighbor like that. A world of knowledge and happy to share it with you. It’s too cool to see him experience new tools and see how modern shops work. I’m glad you got him a table saw but with you would have spent the same on a much better one (saw stop over priced). But either way, he’s going to love his new saw. Wish we could do more for this guy.

After the question, "How are you liking the shop so far," around 3:40, part of me expected John to say, "It doesn't totally suck." LOL. I think I may have watched the last video too many times. But his comment, "It's more precise than I deserve," was also very good. I like your comment around 19:00, "We have to work with what we've got. So rather than try to hide this, I think we should accentuate it..." Great video again! Thank you both! Both great pieces of work, by the way! I thought the catnip compartment was going to give it the edge, but then the speaker/circles at around 25:50 were as creatively cool as that was funny. I think it's a tie. Cheers! :)

Everyone needs a John Sr. in their life, mine isn't a neighbour but a father in law. He took me from not able to saw in a straight line to building pretty much anything and having a passion for it. Every year he stays with us for a week and we do a big project together... over the years we've laid a patio, built an outdoor bar and kitchen complete with a seating area, built a massive composite deck onto the back of the house, put in countless metres of bespoke fencing, and even built a pondless waterfall and stream. I have him to thank for what will likely be a rest of life hobby, and developing an 'I can do that' attitude.

These videos are absolutely the best I hope you keep making videos with John and I hope you treasure every moment you have with him. It has brought back so many memories for me of working with my grandfather when I was a kid and those memories are what has made me get back into woodworking again and remember my grandfather. To me you are both winners in this friendship.

Thank you for your statement t in regards to that "you shouldn't be discouraged when you see shops with more elaborate set ups online...elaborate shops simply save you time and some headaches here and there" This is truly one of the most important and encouraging statements you have ever made. UA-cam shop intimidation can be a real thing. Seeing all those makers with shop furniture that costs more in plywood and accessories than my living room sectional can be daunting for some.
BTW Jon Senior needs his own channel. He's a natural commentator and personality! You cannot go wrong with either design! Only depends on your decorating style! Therefore, once again John wins!
