Awesome video ( as always of course) can you please consider doing a video about Mario Bava I will love to see your perspective on his movies. Greetings from México.👍🏼
I enjoy Deep Red, but I think that Suspiria is Argento's best work. I get some flack for this, but I think his second best is Phenomena. Its such a weird little film.
Sorry to be late to the party on this question. I just discovered your channel tonight through another mutual interest. I am also late to the party on gialli though. I am loving the genre. I watched my first one in mid-May, and have now seen 9 or 10 of them (and read a couple books on it). There is something wonderful about the combination of the mystery, the comedy (intentional and due to cultural differences), the touching on taboo subjects within the plot, the acting/dubbing, and the beautiful visuals (set design, shot composition, use of color...). Thanks for touching on this. Honestly, this video is what made me want to subscribe, even though our comic & more traditional horror interest are what ensures I always have interest in your work.
The realisation that Carlo couldn’t be the killer felt perfectly timed for me, because I was so engrossed in Carlo’s insane and out of nowhere death scene, that it look me a moment to take in the reveal that he was the killer, because, don’t ask me why, I legitimately thought Marcus was the killer for much of the second half of the film. My head was spinning, and had only just stopped spinning when the final twist came along with such a wonderfully cold feeling to it - a masterful film.
While this was indeed delayed it is also fairly well timed, as giallo influence has been making a pretty big comeback in mainstream horror with the likes of Malignant and Last Night in Soho making obvious callbacks to the genre, albeit with their own distinct twists on the formula.
I’m a big werewolf fan so love to see you tackle either the howling, silver bullet, dog soldiers, or whatever you feel like. Not picky, just love the content.
The Company of Wolves has a lot to dig into in terms of storytelling and symbolism. I like when a horror movie goes for an explicitly dream like atmosphere.
I would love to see a critique on Silver Bullet (1985). Its such a great, underrated werewolf flick. It gets riffed on a bit but the only other channel that I've seen give it proper justice is In Praise of Shadows.
pretty late and you've probably seen them hopefully this is allowed lol but heres some links to various dog soldiers reviews i've seen and enjoyed : ) . I’ve done a deep dive into your channel over this year, and this video is one of your best imo. I love that you touch briefly on what Giallo is, before going on to give a great analysis of my favorite Giallo of all time.
Excellent review 👍 I've noticed most americans love Suspiria, but if you ask italian fans, most will say Deep Red is really Argento's masterpiece. I also have a soft spot for Deep Red 'cause it was shot in my city (Turin), and there are a couple of locations that I visit regularly: the galleria San Federico and piazza CLN, with the two huge statues/fountains. Each time I swing by piazza CLN I just have to look up at the window of the first murder... the apartment was abandoned for a while, and there was no glass in the window, a pretty creepy coincidence, but recently there's been a renovation (that's not surprising, it's a pricey part of the town). Oh, and by the way... maybe you've figured it out, but the jazz bar in the piazza was a complete invention by Argento, he constructed a fake front under the arcades 😉 It was quite obviously Argento's homage to Hopper's painting "Nighthawks".
Thank you for covering one of my favorite movies in one of my favorite horror sub-genres. Though I don't think Tenebrae was the last great Argento film - I think Trauma actually holds up pretty dang well.
The second the opening titles start, with that loud, unsettling, repetitive music, you can guess what you are getting yourself into, even if you never have seen the movie and don't know anything about it. Genius! 😁
Well done! Well presented, excellent observations, and SUPERBLY written review! For want of a better word, your commentary was more of a study, an essay, or actually more like poetry!
Always worth the wait, genre movies finally being considered for their artistic merit instead of what's conventionally "serious/ grounded", is something I'm more appreciative of in film analysis. Hopefully more people will also see this and think the same!
I'm so fucking happy I got see this film for the first time without knowing anything about it, except that it's an Argento classic. Me and my friend were high on shrooms while we watched it and til the very end I was so sure I knew who was the killer, then the movie threw a curve ball at me and then it trolled me so hard that no other film has done and the answer was there all along. Spoilers: I fucking saw her in the mirror and was thinking about mentioning it to my friend but decided not to because I thought it was just some Argento weirdness, such a god damn fantastic film.
I dunno how I missed that you did a video on Deep Red, I'm glad I got to check it out as I loved hearing your thoughts on it and the Giallo genre insights you provided too. Deep Red was the first giallo I saw at a film festival in Vancouver years ago and it was one of the most interesting yet bizarre films I'd seen because of the plot, the approach to camera work and that music too. The music by Goblin is one of the most funky and unexpected choices for a film of this nature, but man I really like it. It just adds to the otherworldly nature of the film.
For me, some of the most enjoyable parts of Deep Red include the comic relief of the silly little awkward car, and also the fact that the killer in the story is shown to us through the protagonist's eyes as merely someone innocuous and almost annoying. I only just experienced this film last year for the first time. I still am not certain what was written in the bathroom steam by one of the victims! Could not tell what word(s) appeared there. :D I even watched that scene a second time but no cigar. I have a "thing" with trauma to teeth in movies; makes me wince and cringe, so this one was a real treat, haha.
Couldn't have shown off Gialli films better. Been trying to get my friends into this genre for years. I think you've hit every point over what it is in such beautiful detail. Deep Red is great. In every way. I still think Tenebrae is peak Argento. But I'm sharing this with every friend I have with even a surface level curiousity of the genre. Thank YOU! Time to go rewatch Deep Red!
The stunning Deep Red shots and hypnotic soundtrack nail you to your seat, preventing you from clearly analyzing what you are actually watching. You realize the unreality and implausibility of the plot and scenes only when the movie is over. Nevertheless, Profondo Rosso remains the best "giallo" ever made.
A friend showed me suspiria a few months ago and we've been hooked on Argento. We have seen Phenomena and I just watched Deep Red last night. I ENJOYED Deep Red, even if I did watch the American cut of it! Now I have to find a physical version that has the Original full run time. I've loved the way Argento shows us the movements of the killer through their eyes! I need to compile a list of Argento films to check out now.
Finally saw this movie with some buds, it was great. Also liked how Marcus' manhood is undermined as a joke when his seat in a car breaks and he is shorter than Gianna.
I am relieved to hear that some Plot elements dont make sense, as i was utterly confused after i saw the movie with some friends. Would you consider tackling Tenebrae as well, or was this all you hade to say about the genre and Argento? I prefer Tenebrae over deep Red. I loved the 1980's highly stylised apartments and outfits!
i think the roughest of this one for me is that carlo really kinda gets the shaft, i mean sure the character isnt great really but he's not too bad and then he gets some kinda zara from jurassic world level death. dont get me wrong wouldnt want it changed its shocking yet hilarious.. but idk just feel a lil bad for the guy. unless i'm remembering wrong it was forever ago that i watched deep red haha.
He was just traumatized by his childhood which would explain his alcoholism and overall off behaviour. He definitely didn't deserve his demise but I think it adds to the horror and confusion of the situation.
I'm not sure why but even after watching Tenebre and Deep Red I just can’t enjoy these movies it felt like an out-of-left-field ending with Carlo’s mom being the killer at the end since she has so little in the movie. I think the only thing that gave me a clue as to who the killer was, was when Amanda was killed the killer's height was noticeably shorter and she struggled to move the body. I feel like this movie drags on much more than it should while different I prefer eyes without a Face over this movie by quite a bit
Profundo Rosso is great, but i think Tenebre is just as good. Profundo Russo has a better Goblin score, i guess. Suspiria is probably my favorite film of his, but it's not a pure giallo film.
What are your thoughts on Deep Red and the giallo subgenre?
Awesome video ( as always of course) can you please consider doing a video about Mario Bava I will love to see your perspective on his movies.
Greetings from México.👍🏼
I enjoy Deep Red, but I think that Suspiria is Argento's best work. I get some flack for this, but I think his second best is Phenomena. Its such a weird little film.
I love Giallo, realism is overrated.
Love both of them
Sorry to be late to the party on this question. I just discovered your channel tonight through another mutual interest.

As an Italian it’s always nice seeing foreigners like our cinema! Good stuff mr Draper!
Argento is one of the best ever, and the italian cinema is as a whole one of the most influential ever. Your'e right to be proud of it ;)
As an American film lover, I say give us more! I really wish Italian horror would make a comeback.
Your country has released a ton of great movies!! You should be very proud.
You've also released some great dramatic and romantic cinema. I enjoyed seeing Cinema Paradiso in high school and the thriller The Station.
The Deep Red doll scare is honestly one of the best jump scares of all time
The realisation that Carlo couldn’t be the killer felt perfectly timed for me, because I was so engrossed in Carlo’s insane and out of nowhere death scene, that it look me a moment to take in the reveal that he was the killer, because, don’t ask me why, I legitimately thought Marcus was the killer for much of the second half of the film. My head was spinning, and had only just stopped spinning when the final twist came along with such a wonderfully cold feeling to it - a masterful film.
I thought it was Giannini
“Deep Red” - definitely a top five giallo. Very good overview.
While this was indeed delayed it is also fairly well timed, as giallo influence has been making a pretty big comeback in mainstream horror with the likes of Malignant and Last Night in Soho making obvious callbacks to the genre, albeit with their own distinct twists on the formula.
Deep Red is one of my all time favourites, great video!
I’m a big werewolf fan so love to see you tackle either the howling, silver bullet, dog soldiers, or whatever you feel like. Not picky, just love the content.
I'd love to see The Wolf of Snow Hollow get the MD treatment!
The Company of Wolves has a lot to dig into in terms of storytelling and symbolism. I like when a horror movie goes for an explicitly dream like atmosphere.

I feel like the Martha reveal was a direct precursor to Mrs. Voorhees in F the 13th.
Deep Red is so good! My favorite Arrgento after Suspiria

This soundtrack is so freaking 🔥

It is great, but for me, the best soundtrack from an Argento movie is Tenebrae. MASTERFUL!
Well done! Well presented, excellent observations, and SUPERBLY written review! For want of a better word, your commentary was more of a study, an essay, or actually more like poetry!

Same
Definitely my fav Argento film. Wish he made more with David Hemings, he was perfect for his films.
Excellent video! A fantastic look at the best Giallo ever made!
I love Phenomena for some reason. I know its not his best work, but that music, the weird setting, and Donald Pleasance really do it for me.
Ive got the 4K bluray coming next week,I can't wait to see it. I hear it's whacky
@@jer2dabear niiiice. I just have the regular blu ray...for now...

This is my favorite Argento film. I like all of them but this is his masterpiece in my opinion.
Thank you! This brings back so many memories...
Been meaning to do a deep dive into his career. Giallo is a big blind spot in my horror knowledge/viewing library.
For me, some of the most enjoyable parts of Deep Red include the comic relief of the silly little awkward car, and also the fact that the killer in the story is shown to us through the protagonist's eyes as merely someone innocuous and almost annoying.

Time to go rewatch Deep Red!
I love Italian horror, dario argento and giallo's. I think deep red is one of the best giallo's.
Great essay
Thanks for the video Matt. ❤ your content. Much ❤ as always
you did a really good review. and I consider myself to be a pretty critical person. I really like this. good job!
Great film...and the soundtrack by Goblin is top notch.
I got to see this when it was going around a few years ago with Goblin doing the score live. That was super fun, full house.
Came for the comic retrospectives stayed for the Italian cinema breakdown
Certainly one of the best films I have seen in a while, really enjoyed the film.
Tanke Mister Draper for the recension !
Brilliant review
The stunning Deep Red shots and hypnotic soundtrack nail you to your seat, preventing you from clearly analyzing what you are actually watching. I don't know if you've covered Mario Bava's 'Black Sunday', but it's long been a favorite, along with 'The Evil Eye' and 'Blood and Black Lace'.
Italians know how to make good horror movies 🇮🇹💀
Superb video
I would like to see your analysis of jason aaron's run in Thor. amazing videos, btw
Thank you Matt

This soundtrack is so good
A big Yes! to the Gates Of Hell films being covered.
“The Giallo became a phenomena”… I see what you did there
i think the roughest of this one for me is that carlo really kinda gets the shaft, i mean sure the character isnt great really but he's not too bad and then he gets some kinda zara from jurassic world level death. dont get me wrong wouldnt want it changed its shocking yet hilarious.. but idk just feel a lil bad for the guy. unless i'm remembering wrong it was forever ago that i watched deep red haha.

I like when you do horror vids, a nice step back from comics.
And how about that titanium necklace at the end??
Oh hell yes
I think Tenebrae and Trauma also work as Giallo films.
The killer is shown in a fast shot in between paintings at the beginning of the movie. Pretty risky.
Хороший фильм. Смотрела. Там есть и детектив , и ужас и хорошие чувства людей. Кроваво красное.
Would you cover Batman Ego?
Opera is clearly his best, you silly man. Black Glasses was good too
Andy Cone is a wonderfully fantastic FREAK!!!!!
The Grandfather of "Scream"?
That was derivative..
As a woman, and a huge Giallo fan, I don’t find a lot of Argento’s stories misogynistic. Women, unfortunately, are victims of crime more than men.
I'm not sure why but even after watching Tenebre and Deep Red I just can’t enjoy these movies it felt like an out-of-left-field ending with Carlo’s mom being the killer at the end since she has so little in the movie. Does anyone else prefer Bird and Cat to Deep Red?
Personally no. But those 2 are definitely worth a look.
🙂👍
