This a question, and I know nothing about wood construction, just starting to become interested. I was expecting you to use glue plus the screes or the staples. I was trying to invent one reason like the curves, but then I decided to ask.
Finally a UA-camr with an ad for something I'm actually interested in.
I paused the video and I'll be right back after i check out their website.
Don't wipe off the excess gel of the stain looks awesome in my experience. Sick chairs however another great job
How can you be an American and not be a pornstar, does not make sense.
Great vid and production demonstration...I absolutely loved that you instinctively reached to put your arms on armrests that didn't exist yet, lol...I'll say no more before I sound like a creeper or stalker...love and hugs to you and yours...~~Just me, RD
The McMaster Carr catalog pillow - perfect
I am all for these kind of ads where you actually use the product. Compared to Better Help this is 100% like!
Boy did I read that title wrong, I thought she was gonna make a solar powered lawn chair. 🤣
Title made me wonder what could be powered on a wooden chair 😕
I was a little underwhelmed by what really happened, but a good chair nonetheless.
Same..
I haven't watched the vid yet due to the clunky title.
Well the trees use solar power to grow so is the chair made from solar power?
Making a living chair out of willow or similar would also count as a solar powered chair as it is still alive and growing.
I'm always impressed when people make wooden chairs that are comfortable because there are so many companies whose entire schtick is making furniture that can't manage to make a comfy chair even with padding and whatnot.
There's part of my brain that always just equated wooden with uncomfortable, but I'm now seeing the light.
@@vigilantcosmicpenguin8721 wait until you hear about clogs.
No fiberglass was used in this video. Who are you and what have you done with Xyla?
I love the format. And finishing your workshop is free content ideas for months, even years!
The impostor at least used SOME Botal Tote product ;)
with the resins sprayed on... it's frp, just not glass. that counts.
"Botal Toat" makes me laugh every time :) Thanks for the video!
I remember the first time she said it by accident, and everyone commented about it 😂
It's a great spoonerism :)
You mean battletoad?
My girl Xyla always nailing it
Is that a pun? :)
The McMaster Carr catalog as a pillow is both a great flex and just the cherry on top of that bit.
Oh god I just made the mistake of sorting comments by "newest first"... Made me want to write something nice... I totaly enjoy most of your videos doesn't matter if its a multiple-day RV build that I would probably only be able to recreate in like 10 years or so (even just financialy) or a more simple "I need some new garden furniture!" build. Just keep doing what you do it's great! (also I don't get people complaying about the sponsor, for me it felt very well integrated into the video...)
Anyone who complains about sponsorship or ads, simply doesn't understand the business aspect behind a platform such as this... excellent comment and well said...~~Just me, RD
@@rdskewwell, there are non intrusive, non annoying sponsorships. And then there is this.
@@rdskew People that lament about ads should get accept exposure from artists and content creators as viable payment since i doubt they support them
@@Jehty21 i dont know what you are talking about. this is the least annoying and intrusive sponsored video Ive seen in a LONG time. Most channels have a hard 2-3 minute jabber about a product totally irrelevant to the content either right up front or half-way through that you have to skip through. Xyla kept it short and just informative to know what was powering the machinery, entertaining throughout, and avoiding "talking head" syndrome and disclaimers. AND was actually using the product, do MAKE the thing. Not even worth the time and effort to lift my hand up to the mouse to skip to the end of the product intro.
Very clearly met the title title description. And the main content was not really about the product. She MADE a chair. Using a battery to power her machines. Charged by solar.
@@epremeaux 1/4 of the video is ad.
And you can't even skip it because it's broken up into multiple pieces.
We are so lucky to have the tools we have today. I made a whole line of Adirondack furniture when I first retired in 1992. I designed it on my first Macintosh 128k. So I had to work in 2 D and fake the rest. It was sort of like dress making. I printed out patterns which I glued to MDF, cut those out on a band saw, refined them and made templates and jigs from which I cut the 5 quarter stock old growth cedar on the shaper. More steps after that. A couple of years later I had solar on my Airstream but with a 2500 watt inverter there was not enough power to run any big tools like you can Xyla. Love your videos, love your enthusiasm. Old guy up on Vancouver Island
This is probably the best demonstration of the capabilities of a portable solar power setup that I've seen.
That was a really neat way to show off your sponsor. That's the first time I'd seen a CNC operated from battery power of any kind, let alone solar-charged. 👍
Finally, a sponsor whose product is entirely relevant to the content and the creator.
7:24 The best moment of any build project is when you've finally assembled enough to fully test the thing and it works as nicely as you imagined it.
My 5yo daughter loves your videos, slowly adding more maker ladies to her screen time 😊
Way back in the day, Tormach used to offer a solar bank to power up the mill in remote locations. It worked great but was HUGE! That Anker Solix looks much more portable! Love the Adirondack chair project and a great use for the 24R! Can't wait to see what else you cut with it.
NO WAY!! How did I not know that?? Incredible, haha!
Swoopy and fun design on a classic chair! Gotta say I'm impressed with the wattage on that battery pack. The amps being pulled on those tools *simultaneously* are no joke. Fun project and video! Thanks for sharing!
You have my vote for simple, accessible projects (along with your usual crazy-complicated ones, of course). You have an amazing platform to inspire newbies to not be afraid of "making".
I keep looking at the cheap plastic Adrirondack chairs in my back yard and thinking "I can build those--and better". You may have shamed me into actually doing so :P
My high school wood shop class had us each design and build one of our own, it's a super fun and not overly complex project if you have the tools!
I love the feasible and the unhinged builds, you're a total inspiration! if you need to build anything else for your new home, I'd love to see it, I'm always looking to improve my own room with little builds since buying furniture is expensive and the furniture I want is often not available
A lot of people use gel stain because it is thick enough to reduce splotching (people that use softwood and construction-grade lumber to build things) and/or because the whip-off process allows for the "antiquing" effect in the corners where you cannot wipe everything clear.
Teak oil, and Polyurethane varnish. The Teak oil really pops the colour's of the plywood, but use a sponge rather than a brush, as the brush will leave nasty brush marks. Polyurethane varnish is UV stable and great for outdoor, not to mention hard wearing.
I would add something to the bottom of the legs to prevent moisture from drawing up into the wood from the contact with the ground. Also, check the current draw on that CNC machine. Most garage outlets are only 15 amp.
Hey Xyla, Thanks for putting my “Ska Trooper” decal on your cabinet. Keep on designing and building.
Location, location, location-that looks awesome!! We sure aren’t hanging out in the yard here in Montana. 😉
"The inaugural sit" is an expression I've not come across before.
Next time, maybe a chair made of Balsa wood?
I may have reclined the back a little more but awesome chair!! I like this 'normal' build stuff, but I really like the oddities you regularly comebup with. I'm learning to do this stuff without power tools because I tripped over the historical methodology oxcart.
When I saw your CNC machine I flashed to a late eighties 7pen plotter for doing blueprints. When CAD (and computers) was new!! Ohh the things you think you've forgotten!
Great job, keep it up!
Woodworking Xyla video helps me stave off my Blacktail Studio addiction
It just adds to mine !
When 90% of maker-youtube is "hey yet another another another shop project to improve my shop", it's always delightful when someone uses their shop to actually MAKE SOMETHING.
I thoroughly enjoyed this format of video. The chair is very exciting and looks incredibly stylish as well.
« Meh meh ads meh meh something something »
It’s baffling people complain about you getting paid to do your job and provide nice content. Just ignore the battery and focus on the engineering if that’s what you want you ducks…
Xyla you’re awesome
I use Adblock for UA-cam, which skips the sponsor segments (that you or somebody else has noted the start/end times for). Six segments skipped, which is more than usual. I like the format except for that, and of course love the content.
@@iannicholls2790 this hurts the value of sponsorships, thus the content creator, in the long run.
@@capybara5494 well there is hardly any difference between this and skipping the sponsorship manually. I would prefer if UA-camrs didn't have to rely on sponsorship in the first place. I got a Nebula subscription and the main reason why I still watch videos on UA-cam is cause there isn't a smart TV app for Samsung yet and that they they lack a comment section. From my understanding there is no downside to becoming a Nebula creator so I hope that everyone who depends on this platform for their income makes the switch.
Really like your design, particularly the curves in the sides. These chairs are the most comfortable hard ones ever designed, IMO. Made some from redwood 25 years ago, still intact. PRO TIP - slather the bottoms where they contact the ground with epoxy so the wood doesn't wick moisture. Increases longevity.
lovely video! I like the shorter less intense builds as well. it's fun to see builds that are actually attainable for people without a huge shop
love this format, please do more. you are an inspiration.
you know, in artificial light that stain looks kinda meh. But when put outdoors in the sun, it looks very nice.
YEAH! I was really bummed because I thought I ruined it with the stain, but then ended up not totally hating it. I still a little bit wish I’d done something different but not enough to sand it all off 😂
@@xylafoxlin😂
i love the cool swoopy design of the leg/side parts, they're so cool!
This was a great video, and format. Just a nice short and sweet project, well designed and executed. and a beautiful result.
Xyla making something in the sun is just what i needed on this windy, cold morning! Nice work!
Another cool video. I really enjoy your creativity and geek news. I especially loved your bass build.
i've never seen so something simple like this to look at the same time so complicated, over engineered but also gorgeous and comfortable....nice work, and nice sponsor, should be a no brainer to use solar power in your place...
well done! Looooved that this was done using only renewable energy!
Love the design of your chair! Keep making great videos.
Great design on the chairs!
This whole project is relevant to me on so many levels… thank you!
And, your added sit-test endorsement might have just sealed the deal on my next build 😉
Absolutely loving the design!!
Accessible projects like this are really cool! Definitely would like to see more of them! Thanks!
Loved the format! Flex your skills!
Love your style applied to the Adirondack chair! They look great in the yard.
Keep the magic flowing, Xyla. Inspire those alternate energy loving future creators! This is genuinely awesome!
Enjoy all the videos you've made so far. I always enjoyed the popular mechanics plans at the back for crazy stuff you could make as a "hobbyist" so anything along those lines would be fun. That battery is pretty impressive, I wonder how long it would take to charge it totally full?
Great video, I enjoy watching people build things and it doesn't matter what is being built.
Nice work. I used to make Adirondack chairs with my dad as a kid (first exposure to woodworking which became a lifelong love). We used 1x4 stock and got our process so tight we only needed 3-4 boards for a chair, more for a loveseat or chairs with a table. He also left a bigger gap between the slats in his design because he made his so the back is removable so they stored easier in the winter.
I prefer oil stains over gels myself. Coverage in my opinion is much better and more even and unlike gel it actually sinks into the grain of the wood. If you got to the bottom of my wall o' text thanks for reading!😂
Loved the subject matter. Already inspired to make some myself! Please do more of this!
I loved the video format, it feels more achievable and relatable to me and I'd imagine, to most people...but your crazy projects are just as entertaining and very inspirational, so you do you. That's why we're all here.
he company Anker has a lot of experience with such things and offers really good products. What's special about Anker is the packages where everything is coordinated with each other.
Very nice chairs, only design doesn't always have to be comfortable, but the chairs look very nice.
Yes, I loved the format!
Loved the chair design and that you're running your shop equipment on solar. Definitely cool!
I like this format of building something simple and useful that I could actually feasibly want to do.
love the look of these chairs
My understanding of the draw of gel stain is that it gives consistent color when you're staining something with mixed wood types or materials, which is always a potential case with furniture rehab. I've used it in an end table project where I used pine for structure and oak plywood for the surface pieces, it definitely did the trick in that respect, but it was a pain to use.
Just lovely....and the chairs are pretty-darned nice, too :) Up here in Canadia we call 'em "Muskoka Chairs", but same idea. In fact, right across the street from me there's a *massive* Muskoka chair that's an advertisement for the house-boat rental place...
Outstanding work, very proud of your thoughts and design...... :)
The format is great. Keep it up!
Small useful projects are great. love the new shop, keep up the good work!
My gawd😍, that battery pack looks amazing!
Beautiful work
Talented, beautiful and crazy smart! Love the videos!
man every video you put out makes me wish I had the money and space for a workshop, I also have to agree with you on gel stain, it's just a mess and ends up looking super patchy
just start doing something. Tools and the rest will come with time.
Beautiful looking chair! I made a bench in a similar way with plywood. With ply wood you need to seal it very well or else it will delaminate after a year or two of sitting out in the sun.
The chairs are awesome. You have design flair enough to make me want to see more of this type of video.
Great video for a rainy friday at the end of a rainy week at the end of a rainy month. Is been so overcast and rainy.
So - remember to use water-based coatings...
Looks like you need matching footrest for the chairs
... and drill a hole for a tapered tumbler where your hand rests naturally (a spilled libation on a hot afterrnoon would be a Dotal Tisaster!)
Or a table to go between the chairs that double as containment for a cooler for those cold libations and/or mixology tools and utensils within easy reach.🍹🥃🍻🧊📻🔫
I volunteer as tribute to be Xyla Feetlin's feetrest
love the format!
love the feetmat!
Awesome job Xyla! Do more.
Now to add solar panels to the chair and a plug to power the laptop and work even more!
ONE panel ought to power the laptop.
Adirondack came out great! And saw my sticker on the cabinet! Thank you :)
Definitely love the simple video and im sure theyre easier on you but ill watch whatever you make
More of this kind of video would be good.
A lightly bowled shape cup holder in each arm might come in handy.
Great video, loved the way you incorporated the sponsor as well. For those that complain about the sponsor, they should just pony up the cash so you don't need a sponsor. Seems like a pretty easy fix :D Keep doing what you are doing. (and now I need to reevaluate my Patreon budget!)
Beauty and utility... The chairs look good too.
damn that lemon water had a ton of lemon in it, lol. I loved this video and format. It had some rad "this old house" type vibes where it's just someone making something rad with solid and calming background tunes.
I love it! I also have an "off-grid" shop on Camano Island, though my solar panels are mostly for running shop lights and recharging my COPIOUS suit of DeWalt Li batteries. I enjoyed this video because I am also looking to build a few Adirondack chairs, and while I loved the design, mine will be a folding variety so I can store them away from the PNW weather when not in use. I do love the curves though, very avant garde!!
Love the practical projects!
This was a fun video. You should def. make more like it. Those chairs look like they could use some nice tables to go with them. ;)
The point of gel stain is to 1) serve as a varnish finish, and 2) being gelled slows down penetration, reducing blotching, splotching, and finish imperfections that are common on certain species of woods & engineered wood products. It is also a lot more forgiving when you've used harder to stain or irregular-stainable materials - such as wood fillers and certain glues. It generally provides and ensures a more even stain and finish; assuming you've properly pre-prepared your wood. Gel stains do require some amount of skill (versus oil based), but provide a better finish.
Very nice, wonderful work. Being I live and hike the Adirondacks I’ve seen a lot of examples of the original in many different materials but plywood, haven’t seen that before. It will be interesting to see how long they last. My one suggesting, and I think would be a nice addition, is a leg rest, either detached or fold out. Just a thought. Keep up the great work and ideas. Thank you.
Awesome video Xyla!! 💜
This chair is super cool! I'm buying a new house and may have to steal your design idea for the patio. (Kinda motivates me to try and make mine with solar as well.)
Love this style of video
I've tried to use that gel stain before too, and I agree it was such a hassle and the coat was not as even as a normal stain.
Very cool design! Looks great 👍
Those chairs look great and comfortable! It's pretty amazing what you can do with a CNC machine and some plywood :D
I'm looking at buying land up in the Virginia City Highlands to build a house and a shop. Running power to those properties is so expensive, several homes are 100% solar powered. So it's definitely a thing.
It always makes me happy to see you make such cool stuff!
Chair looks really cool and you are so amazing
Really love your equipment and talent. Holy cow you’re so talented !!!!!!!!
Definitely throwing my vote in for the doable projects! Always love seeing stuff I can feasibly make at home.
I love the McMaster pillow!
Looks great! Try conditioning the wood before staining, I didn't know gel stain could blotch like that but maybe a pre-conditioning would help.
