Wow! 5:33 really grabbed my attention. I never would have considered active pickups or even Alnico V humbuckers (I'm usually only interested in Alnico II), but I am really liking that PAF sound.
Wow, the Tim Henson set sounded great!! Yet again that surprised me. I never cared for most pups in the Somnium guitar "quick-change" mechanism. Also as much as I like Greg Koch, I never cared for his "gristle tone" pup set. The Henson set in the Somnium is about as good as it gets!! That's amazing!! As much as I like vintage pups, those are worth a second look! Great demo Phil!! 8) --gary
EMG SA SA 85 user here. Never going back. The clarity they provide have made me a more precise player bc any mistakes are VERY noticeable. These pickups are FANTASTIC, and I’m not a fan of Polyphia.
They have them in the form of MIDI pickups, you can make your guitar sound like a flute, piano, drums, make the top string a bass string while the rest are normal guitar or make every single string a different instruemnt. This goes for single coils etc. The problem is they don't go into a regular guitar amp you need something that can process midi.
@@GuitarJeff The Roland/Boss VG systems use a hex pickup and do pickup modeling. No MIDI involved in that. It processes the raw signals from the hex pickup. My VG-8EX doesn’t do MIDI at all. Line 6 guitars do something similar, but they do it all on-board the guitar instead.
Great review of these pickups. I've been fascinated by these for a while and have had my eye on a Charvel with the open core version on a T-style guitar. I preferred the Scott LePage set a little more. The sustain on the neck pickup was great.
sheesh, they really do sound pretty good,...time to move with times folks, this kind of technology & tone can't be ignored anymore,...these are wonderful vintage voiced tones full stop🤘
You need to try the Devin Townsend Fluence set. Those blew me away. I still love my Dimarzio Fortitude and 36th PAF but these have me itching for something else to add to my gear.
Had an Esp guitar with active pickups. It was easy to play. Loved it. EMG pickups. I flipped it to make some extra bucks. Wish I kept it. Will get another one someday. Good stuff. 😎👍💯🎸🎸
I really loved the sound of the first set especially in clean channel was such a great sound. From getting into some great blues to then some top old school rock playing. I can’t believe I missed this video, as had shocker abscess under tooth took me out for a bit. Grumpy Digger not sure why name changed. I must of definitely stuffed up to the snark that I won with email yet Australia u couldn’t send from what I heard. I added a photo of (myself and trooper my service dog) those pick ups available down under at all. Loving my KYG t-shirts and mug. Catch you back on live shows my sat morning lol. Crap was I sick lol. Still the best guitar channel to be a member off as I’m such a guitar geek. Be so cool to get a chance to meet you just to buy u a drink and chat guitars. Being right in your age gap maybe little older I click on so many of same years. Cheers Matt 🫡🪖🇦🇺
I don't know that I've played active pickups. I've played passive pickups with active preamp, and only in basses. All my guitars have always been passive. These sound pretty good for sure, and if they're good enough for the Polyphia guys, they should be good for everyone
wish the Fishman battery pack was more cost friendly, and it seems like im replacing batteries every couple months vs yearly with my EMG's. Jury still out for me, Ive got an LTD with the moderns and an Evertune, i dont know if its the ET or the pickups im hearing. Cant wait to hear what your thoughts on ET is Phil.
Both sets sounded superb when clean, and I didn't notice the usual drop in volume when going to single-coil mode. I hate to say I really didn't the white ones through the small box. I absolutely loved the clean tones though.
great stuff, Phil! i'm a big fan of what Fishman is doing with the Fluence line. pickup winding can be so inconsistent, as with many things in the guitar world. i hope to see more companies using tech to make up for these inconsistencies.
Went ahead an bought tims new signature guitar cause I couldn't justify the mod for any of my current guitars, but getting scotts pickups for a future mod build sounds like the plan
Saw this a coupla days after it aired--impressive pups & nice comparison. What Gretsch was that on your wall, just below your right elbow as viewed by us viewers?
Andreas, When you wire pickup into the active circuit it takes care of the 25k resistance, and to do the 250/500 you just use a push/pull with extra resistor. Hope that helps. BTW how have you been with your Somnium? Any questions feel free to call.
They sound amazing- and I'm just about to replace the pickups in my Epi Les Paul- but, I've decided to put a P90 in the neck and a hotter humbucker at the bridge. These do sound amazing though.
I'm quite fond of the Fluence Classics that I put in my PRS SE Custom 24. Not fond of having to remember to unplug the guitar to not kill the battery. But they do sound very nice.
I was thinking of adding fluence classics to a SE custom 24 as well. I may just get the Lepage Krys10 guitar, since it’s essentially the classic pre-installed. I love the Fluence classic pickup. For fun, I installed them in an Ibanez Mikro. What a riot.
OK, I ended up buying the Scott LePage pickup set. I'm still not clear what comes with them and whether I need to still get some 25K pots and switches or if they come with that stuff. One place (that I didn't order them from) seemed to indicate it came with 2x25K Pots and 2x Push/pull 25K pots. The place I ordered them from was significantly a better deal, but doesn't say anything about anything that comes with them. Does anyone know?
You're sitting right in front of both of my guitars, a Majesty, and a Parker fly deluxe. 😂 I recently bought a Fender strat, and I'm surprised how much different passive is from active, I bought an HSS, and I'm having a little difficulty getting used to the Strat "feel"..
Mr Phil, you are the man to know this. Im wondering if I remove the cover on a Seymour Duncan will the bobbin have the Seymour Duncan logo stamped on it?
You could probably wire up something like phantom power if you’re willing to put an XLR jack in your guitar and build a custom breakout box on your pedalboard.
I have Fluence Modern’s in my Schecter, and I love em. Replacing batteries does suck, but it also gives me a good idea of how much time I am actually spending practicing 🤷♂️.
Husband and I were watching a video of yours 2 nights ago where you talked about your late night guitar buying. We laughed. Last night what do you think we did? Doh! Is this the power of suggestion? I'm sure we'll love our Sire G3 tho.
Great video! Question, if I were to install a set in an RG550 that has the locking trem, would they work or do we need to wait for a 53mm bridge size? TIA
Is the Neck Voice 2 on the Scott LePage different from the regular Classic? Seems to be brighter and clearer where the Classic seemed to be more wooly, kind of like having a blanket over the sound from my memory. But I thought the descriptions were his signature set were supposed to just be a different cosmetic option amd maybe a slightly tweaked single coil tone.
For once I'm not sure I like this video. It's gonna cost me.😢 The Scott LaPage P/U's are possibly the best P/U's I've ever heard. Love the humbuckers and the single coils.
Can't wait to buy these. Not just because Polyphia is my favorite band, but because they sound awesome! For real though, those boys are some of the finest guitar players I've ever seen. I've had a blast learning their stuff. Can't wait to see them perform in April in Louisville! Maybe I'll get lucky and win this contest! Sweet video!
I have an LTD w Fishman Classics....I keep jumping between liking them and hating them tbh. There's just a quality to them that I can't quite put my finger on. They have a lot of clarity, but they seem almost....cold, mechanical.....there's this "fuzzy" mid range to them that sounds kind of sterile. I dunno, I've never flip flopped so much on how I feel about a set of pickups. Of course, it's possible that the guitar itself is contributing to how they sound on my axe, specifically.
If I wanted to add these to a guitar but I don't want to drill holes in the top for mini toggles to change voicing, what other switching options are available?
:), yeah kinda took me by surprise too, I know there is a technical and practical reason why they keep their tones a little on the clean/sterile side of things, but i agree,...i generally chase vastly different tones to the bois. These pickups kinda go hard tho:)🤘
I respectfully disagree with you regarding those single coil sounds in the bridge position - like almost all other split single coils they are unimpressive. But I still love you, Phil.
Congratulations to King Mike who won the set of Fishman pickups. Thank you to everyone who entered.

That was awesome Phil. Your reaction was so honest…”I’m in love…!” he said after playing a hot lick👍. Great video.
Now I want to buy those pickups.
9:17 am I the only one who didn't know he could do that!? those are some mad skills!
He's mentioned before he was originally a bass player, I usually forget until moments like these.
I love the Classics but these sound sweeter and the different modes are voiced fantastic.
Those fluence pickups never fail to impress me, need to get a set into my guitar. Great review Phil!

Nice job phil! The swap between single coil and humbucker mode is pretty eye opening. Even over youtube
Thanks for the awesome demo and the opportunity to win these Phil .

Thanks Phillip! As always an exciting video. Happy tunes!
I’m surprised that amp modeling companies haven’t created pickup emulations.

Line 6 variax jtv
SIM1 XT hello?
Digitech and Boss used to do something like this, ala Boss ME50 or Digitech GNX or RP lines.
Great review of these pickups. I've been fascinated by these for a while and have had my eye on a Charvel with the open core version on a T-style guitar. I preferred the Scott LePage set a little more. The sustain on the neck pickup was great.

Nice playing, Phil! I really enjoy it. Let’s hear your album.
Those pickups sounds unreal!!
Awesome pickups. Great playing Phil.
You need to try the Devin Townsend Fluence set. Those blew me away. I still love my Dimarzio Fortitude and 36th PAF but these have me itching for something else to add to my gear.
Fantastic as always Phil, thank you for putting out these great videos!
Great video Phil, man those pickups sound awesome!!!!
Had an Esp guitar with active pickups. It was easy to play. Loved it. EMG pickups. I flipped it to make some extra bucks. Wish I kept it. Will get another one someday. Good stuff. 😎👍💯🎸🎸
Thanks for the review, as always you did good.
Thank you Phil, great review! (also love the Strandberg on the wall...just sayin')
My favorite pickups are Fishman Fluence Moderns....I understand they are very divisive....people typically love them or hate them...
I really loved the sound of the first set especially in clean channel was such a great sound. From getting into some great blues to then some top old school rock playing. The Scott pickups changed my mind about fluence.
Thanks Phillip! Great video!

My guitar journey has a long way to go before I get anywhere near actives, but I enjoy learning. Thanks, Phil!
They do sound great, I’m intrigued. Have you tried the fishman P90s yet?
Man, I'm a huge Polyphia fan. Got to see them and did the "VIP" ticket thing at their last tour. One of the best concert experiences I've ever had.
I've been waiting for the Scott LePage set since they were announced in his latest ibanez. They'll be replacing the white/ gold Duncans in my strat.
Both sets sounded superb when clean, and I didn't notice the usual drop in volume when going to single-coil mode. I hate to say I really didn't the white ones through the small box. I absolutely loved the clean tones though.
I've got Fluence moderns on my Ibanez RG631ALF and it gives amazing versatility of sound. One ceramic, one Alnico in that case.
I have the same guitar. I want some white Fishmans just for the looks, but I'm honestly content with the ones I have
Oh hell, now I have to decide which Humbuckers I have to evict to make room for these. They sound fantastic.
great stuff, Phil! i'm a big fan of what Fishman is doing with the Fluence line. pickup winding can be so inconsistent, as with many things in the guitar world. i hope to see more companies using tech to make up for these inconsistencies.

I haven't had active pickups in anything since the 80's. Maybe they don't eat batteries as fast as the active setup I last installed?
I’m pretty sure the Scott pickups are straight up fishman classics, period. The 3 voices have identical descriptions to those of the classics.
How did you mod the Somnium to switch between 25/250/500k pot values?
Andreas, When you wire pickup into the active circuit it takes care of the 25k resistance, and to do the 250/500 you just use a push/pull with extra resistor. Hope that helps. BTW how have you been with your Somnium? Any questions feel free to call.

The Scott model pickups are just the Classics with gold hardware, according to documentation and Fishman videos
Don't know if you ever tried Iron Gear pickups, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on those.
I'm quite fond of the Fluence Classics that I put in my PRS SE Custom 24. Not fond of having to remember to unplug the guitar to not kill the battery. But they do sound very nice.

They sound phenomenal! Will those Seymour Duncan rings with the micro switch in them work with these? I’m not drilling holes in any of my guitars.
You can use a pull pots instead of switches. I have the tele Gristle Fishman pups and really love them.
Beautiful!
What are your favorite all around pickups for a telecaster? Ones that can handle anything from metal to chicken picken.
Did these pickups come with the three way mini-switches? Great video.
Nice. Would love for you to cover the P90 and tele sets.
All I can say is Wow!
You're sitting right in front of both of my guitars, a Majesty, and a Parker fly deluxe. 😂 I recently bought a Fender strat, and I'm surprised how much different passive is from active, I bought an HSS, and I'm having a little difficulty getting used to the Strat "feel"..
Active or passive? They sound great.
Love polyphia and am so glad you made this vid!
Listnin' w phones on....Daaaamn those sound great!
OK, I'm still obsessed with these Scott LePage pickups. Do they come with anything else in the box? Like some pots or switches?
Mr Phil, you are the man to know this. Im wondering if I remove the cover on a Seymour Duncan will the bobbin have the Seymour Duncan logo stamped on it?
They’re really changing the pickup landscape
Have you ever tried Lace Alumitone pickups? They're very unconventional and I would like to hear your thoughts about them.
I am not a fan of batteries.. Great video though. (will probably buy an active pickup guitar in three months... haha)
You could probably wire up something like phantom power if you’re willing to put an XLR jack in your guitar and build a custom breakout box on your pedalboard.

I love these!🎸❤👍
did you paint the headstock on that somnium? Noticed on the P90 video last week NICE

Ooh. I think I want a set of these in a Tele deluxe

But I thought the descriptions were his signature set were supposed to just be a different cosmetic option amd maybe a slightly tweaked single coil tone.
it's said, a slightly tweaked version of the classic.
I have fluence on my bass. Always stay with the active
For once I'm not sure I like this video. It's gonna cost me.😢 The Scott LaPage P/U's are possibly the best P/U's I've ever heard. Love the humbuckers and the single coils.
Really nice sounds nice

I just saw their September-October schedule and they're playing with one of my favorite jazz groups DOMi and JD Beck. I gotta go to that show
@The Smelly Cat's Jazz Do it! I can't wait to watch these dudes jam. Tim and Scott are incredible. But so are Clay and Clay lol.
I have an LTD w Fishman Classics....I keep jumping between liking them and hating them tbh. There's just a quality to them that I can't quite put my finger on. After listening many demos I've came to similar conclusion. It sound boosted and synthetical. It also feels as expensive and cheap at the same time.
Damn that sounds great.....
Thanks
Hey Phil dude tune to Eb standard for grins and giggles 👍👍✌️🎵🎵🎵
EMG for life!!
yuck!
What kind of amp switcher do you use?
I really hope they make a 7 or 8 sting variation
impressive
Thanks Phil 👍
I’ve got a haze 7 string with actives and I can’t stand it. Bought a prophecy sg that has actives and returned it that weekend.
Yeah, they usually suck but- listen to these man, they sound amazing.
Oh but what would Glenn Fricker say?
......that it sounds like a guitar! You hear what you want to hear......😀🎸🤘🎸
daaaang those are nice
Anyone got a comparison between these and fishman open core standard?
If I wanted to add these to a guitar but I don't want to drill holes in the top for mini toggles to change voicing, what other switching options are available?
Push/pull pots
@Ray Schurr aren't those only two options, though?
Too bad the giveaway is US only
Good evening from Detroit Rock City
Just across the state from you southwest of Lansing.
I'm just the opposite. Can't stand passive pups anymore.
How about fishmans in the passive setting?
No lefty 25k pots, so I can't try this :(
EMG has them...fyi
@@rayschurr9337 where where? EDIT: Ooh they do (found in EMG site)
I think I'm gonna stick to EMGs
It’s funny great sounding pickups . From two amazing technicians…. With the worst guitar tone of all time
:), yeah kinda took me by surprise too, I know there is a technical and practical reason why they keep their tones a little on the clean/sterile side of things, but i agree,...i generally chase vastly different tones to the bois. These pickups kinda go hard tho:)🤘
I respectfully disagree with you regarding those single coil sounds in the bridge position - like almost all other split single coils they are unimpressive. But I still love you, Phil.
Active pickups sucks, change my mind😛
