I‘ve had the P6 module for some years and just recently swapped it with a keyboard version, because I‘m playing it so much. I love the sound too and somehow it feels like you‘ll be getting a P6 at one point again 🙂 Will be missing further P6 videos from you, but am also keen to see your Pro 3 vids. I sold mine after about a year and a half of use as well. I used Repro 5 for a long while, but I caved earlier this year and grabbed a Prophet 10, as it was the Prophet 5 I really wanted when I got the 6 anyway. I do miss the onboard sequencer as it was very inspiring to play with, but otherwise I’m very happy with the P10.
@@Sound_ology I’ve owned a prophet 6 and prophet 10. I wouldn’t buy a prophet 10 being that you just sold the p6. The p10 is more limited in sound design with just an ever so slightly better raw tone then the p6.

This was an eye opener and definitely had some good info for me. I'm sort of on a Prophet 6 journey right now. I'm simple when it comes to synths. Soundtracks are my love. 80s, horror, zombies, slashers, action, b movies. Anything with a synthesizer score im all about. I've had a Juno-6 and a Polysix for a really long time now (about 8 years) and they're my 2 only workhorses. Literally does everything i could ask for in an 80s movie soundtrack. That being said, i am NOT a pro musician. Mostly just an enthusiast of analog synthesizers. I've been thinking of downsizing considerably and selling the Juno-6 and Polysix and just having a Prophet 6. I think it would suit my needs perfectly and of course, wouldn't have to worry about maintenance. What are your thoughts on this decision? Just looking for some feedback as this would be a HUGE change and most likely the last synthesizer i ever purchase and own.
@@pfmdude Hey, thanks for your comment, this sounds like maybe the wrong move to me, I wouldn’t take a p6 over a Juno 6 and Polysix. I think an OB-6 is more what you’re looking for. It does what you’re looking for better than the p6. The p6 tone is angelic, but the OB-6 brings the dark, dystopian side much easier and brightens up too. I know it’s weird that it’s not a straight ahead Sequential synth but that’s where the magic is. The OB-6 is the synth dream of the 80s.

I had the Take 5 first, didn’t gel with it. Sold it and bought a Pro 3. Now we’re talking! I love it so much! I do think that it’s the best synth Dave Smith ever made.
If you ever miss it, the Arturia V collection (half off right now) has an amazing sounding prophet 5. I own the 6 and have played a real 5 and I can say it sounds so good.
Yes, I’ve used the Arturia V collection and it’s very close sound-wise. Never used it for longer than about an hour though, just always kind of lost interest for some reason. I even had the big Arturia keyboard with the knobs and faders auto mapped to the different parameters on it too. That’s a big part of the reason I got so into hardware, I knew the V collection sounded great, but it drained me of my creative energy. It also didn’t help that I had a $150 interface with 30ms of latency, that really sucked the life out of playing
That all makes sense… it’s interesting how people’s synths shift as part of their creative process, and as new instruments come on the market. As a p6 owner, I found your explorations of it really helpful, the detail and enthusiasm involved. I sometimes imagine a strange new time when I will be the last satisfied prophet 6 owner on earth-if it eventually falls out of fashion and gets cheap on the used market, that would be a bargain for a lot of newer synth users….

@@HiLoMusic the Polybrute. It has all the filtering of the OB6. The oscillators are much more fun to play with, the sequencer is super cool and the effects are really really good. Also loving all the modulation possibilities.
Kind of in a similar boat. I'm giving myself the rest of the year to decide because the P6 was so dear to me. I ended up with a Prophet X and even though they are completely different sounding, there is a ton of overlap. I really only want one poly synth. I do soundtrack work and have a long running affinity for romplers. PX is kind of a dream come true for me. It's very very good sounding and full of happy accidents. The Prophet 6 still has an edge in those ultra raw "analog" types of tones. Polymod, and SFX type stuff, or just a straight INIT patch with some slight filter movement and you know you're playing a P6. That being said, like you, I've been kind of thinking nearly any mono would be even better than the P6 at those very things. The PX paired with a nice fat/juicy mono would be a hell of a duo to have. Currently thinking about something like matriarch in that "mono" slot alongside some DIY modular.
for you, the take 5 sounds like something that could work. you would have the VCO's and mod routes and poly. i'm hoping to have a prophet 10 module sometime in the next year. to me, that warm sound of the p5/10 is the pinnacle of what i'm after. i love to play the big chords though which is why the t5 or p5 wouldn't really work for me. i have a pro3 3 and it is a beast. honestly, i play with the rev2 more because of the poly. if the take 5 would have had all the features from the pro 3 i would have gotten one and adapted to the 5 voices.
I think i get what you mean. Tastes change. Sometimes you need limitations to really challenge your creativity. Right now I, torn between the Prophet Rev 2 and Moog Matriarch. Sometimes I crave that mono synth juicy, Moog, ridiculously chewy sound with that gorgeous filter, but more times than not I just want insanely huge pads with verb or a bass ARP. You make great points. Don't be afraid to challenge yourself by limiting yourself. Beautiful things can ensue .
I tried the take 5 in a synth shop with a really nice sound system and I loved it. The filter sounded great, and I thought the different delay options were cool and fun. The only thing I didn’t like about it was the way it looked…which actually turned me off of it in a really big way. But the sound was awesome
Pro 3 my Fav synth. Yea it's a mono synth but it creates a wall of sound and I believe it is one of my most sonic synths meaning it's transparent but full. I can create any sound with it and I don't miss the polyphony really because what it does do is so complete.

Round about 40 years ago I had 2 Prophet 5. I sold them, which was a mistake. I play Soul, Jazz, Fusion and Gospel. 4 years ago I bought the Prophet 6. I love the unit. Easy to carry. It is an add on for my Hammond Organ playing. So my question. You sold the P6 and what have you bought instead?
Ultimately I ended up buying a Moog Matriarch. I played one in a store and just fell in love with the sound. At some points I’ve missed the Prophet 6 because covid has let up and I’m playing gigs again, but overall I’m happy with my decision
I have a question to the Pro 3: mine sometimes changes parameters automatically. I think it's because sometimes it happens that knobs register a small movement and the parameter sets immediately to the knob position. Have you regognized something similar, or is it maybe a midi cc information from an other device or is it broken? Thank you!
It sounds like midi information from another device to me. You could try switching the knob mode to something other than jumping to the position value to be sure though
The knobs on mine were nice and tight when I got mine new. As the instrument got older some of the knobs got a little wobbly or loose. I was kinda disturbed when I first noticed it, but then I forgot about it, it never affected the way it played, but I did use those knobs a little more gingerly. And compared to some of my vintage gear, it was very minor. If it bothers you you should contact Sequential support, they have the best repair policy in the business ($25/ repair for life) and seem to truly care about their customers. Maybe send them a quick video showing how the knobs move.
The 4 pole OTA on the Pro3 IS the Prophet 6 filter. Literally the same filter. Not sure why you think the Pro3 filter sounds better? I guess the drive and feedback abilities would get a different sound character from it. I love the sound of the 4 pole OTA on my Pro3 and I was thinking of picking up a Prophet 6 largely based off that fact. But hearing you say that they sound different has made me think twice. I'm confused to be honest at how they can sound different. All I can think is that the gain going in could be different. I guess when you say the Pro3 filter sounds better you were taking into account the drive too?
Oh have you compared the circuit diagrams or something? I knew it was based on the prophet 6 filter and I’ve always wondered. The 4-pole OTA filter has a subtle clipping to it right on the edge, I can’t remember if it needs drive or not to get there. It’s not as soft of clipping as the ladder filter but softer than the 2-pole. I love it but I never noticed anything like that on my Prophet 6. It was all very clean on a scope. It could also be a difference in the way they’re calibrated or the knob size, but getting good, crunchy bass sounds out of the P6 was difficult, but it’s really easy on the pro 3
@@Sound_ology Hey, thanks for replying 😊 To be honest I do not remember which video it was, but I recall Dave explaining that he used the exact filters from P6 and OB6. You can also see in the Pro2 and Pro3 description page on the website. On Pro2 it mentions that the filters are inspired by Prophet and Oberheim, where on the Pro3 it straight up says it is the P6 and OB6 filters (and even includes the trademark). After thinking some more about this I remember now something about the OSCs on Pro3 having a much higher gain output than is typical. I believe up to 50% drives the filter in a normal range, where above 50% starts to drive the filter harder and this is without even touching the drive knob. So it makes sense that the filter sounds different I guess as it's about gain staging. BTW, I love the distortion and gain staging on my Summit (Peak too). The distortion (analog) sounds really great and has 3 stages pre filter (per voice), post filter (per voice) and FX (global) Thanks for your videos, they are great! 😊
Absolutely!! It inspired me to make a 20 minute sludge dungeon drone, so I’d definitely say yes. The tuned feedback is dark ambient heaven and the reverb is awesome for it
Its funny, I believe I had mentioned to you that I had sold the Matriarch for the P6, FOR the preset saving and 6 note poly, kinda the exact reason why you've parted ways haha. excited to see what you do with the Pro 3! Still slightly miss that buttery moog sound with that crazy amazing delay, ooof!
With all due respect, but the Sequential Prophet, and any offspring, was not meant to be a sound design tool. It's no wonder that you've outgrown its possibilities. The Prophet was primarily designed and marketed as a performance and studio synth for song writers and keyboardists - ie. the countless 80s synth pop artists and progressive rockers like Tony Banks. If you want endless sound design capabilities for ambient or experimental "music", go software or Access Virus.
So, I just started with synths. I started with Moog semi modular synths and a Roland Tr8s. I wonder if I’m going to do the opposite and go polyphonic once I get tired of the Moogs. Just kidding. Moog is too good. Sooooooo crunchy.
Yeah, Dave Smith synthesizer's seem pretty cool in my opinion. They're super expensive though 😬 I really like the old Prophet Vector Synth they use to make, those are pretty hard to find and not only that they're very very expensive.
Interesting video and all makes sense, except I find the Prophet 6 to be great for improv with a lot of sweet spots, so I wasn't sure what you meant by it being a preset kind of synth.
Vintage mode definitely increased the sweet spots filter-wise, but overall I didn’t find it to be like a 303 or a Juno 6 or Grandmother or something where it feels like you can’t make a wrong move
The p6 is amazing, what I wanted from an instrument just changed over time. These days I’m more interested in a cleaner sound and have a rev2 that I adore

The Pro 3 has discrete circuits in the VCOs and VCF. Those discrete circuits make all the difference.

Curious what you use for a sequencer now days? Hands down that basic sequencer on the P6 was great for building. I have a 10 now as well

I agree with the P6 and pro 3 comparisons. The pro3 is better all around imo. Have you had a chance to try the take 5? It’s pretty incredible as well.

I cant deny the pro3. I love it to death but I also have a OB6 here for my soft sounds. I love the gnarly sounds of the Pro3. Its fantastic.

Its funny, I believe I had mentioned to you that I had sold the Matriarch for the P6, FOR the preset saving and 6 note poly, kinda the exact reason why you've parted ways haha. excited to see what you do with the Pro 3! Still slightly miss that buttery moog sound with that crazy amazing delay, ooof!

With all due respect, but the Sequential Prophet, and any offspring, was not meant to be a sound design tool. It's no wonder that you've outgrown its possibilities.
The Prophet was primarily designed and marketed as a performance and studio synth for song writers and keyboardists - ie. the countless 80s synth pop artists and progressive rockers like Tony Banks. If you want endless sound design capabilities for ambient or experimental "music",
go software or Access Virus.
I agree, part of what I liked about the Prophet 6 was that it's a focused instrument that responds well to pushing the boundaries
So, I just started with synths. I started with Moog semi modular synths and a Roland Tr8s. I wonder if I’m going to do the opposite and go polyphonic once I get tired of the Moogs.

Yeah, Dave Smith synthesizer's seem pretty cool in my opinion. They're super expensive though 😬 I really like the old Prophet Vector Synth they use to make, those are pretty hard to find and not only that they're very very expensive.

Interesting video and all makes sense, except I find the Prophet 6 to be great for improv with a lot of sweet spots, so I wasn't sure what you meant by it being a preset kind of synth.
Vintage mode definitely increased the sweet spots filter-wise, but overall I didn’t find it to be like a 303 or a Juno 6 or Grandmother or something where it feels like you can’t make a wrong move
Or maybe it’s the user not the instrument that’s not good
The p6 is amazing, what I wanted from an instrument just changed over time. These days I’m more interested in a cleaner sound and have a rev2 that I adore
