- This is my best recorded score in Robotron. Achieved in one hour and 37 minutes. Notice that game waves (levels) roll back after 99, so I rolled them twice. I played my best on the Grunts (highlights:59,99,139,219) and Tank Waves (highlights:122,172,207,227). I never had a perfect Brain Wave although I had a few close ones (75,135,190,195). Ironically, my worst waves were also mostly Grunt waves 109,119,229. Gameplay fatigue started around waves 170-180 and the first time I noticed fewer than 7 lives was on wave 191. From there, it was mostly downhill with just a few highlights (201-204,211,218).
Robotron is an intense experience all the way; there are periods where you feel almost invincible, in a zone, and then there are slumps where nothing seems to go right and start bleeding out lives.
This game has the MOST AMAZING sound ever. Even if it's one voice.
Yeah, pretty interesting concept, how the next sound would cancel out the last. Creates a cacophony that's awesome in those cabinet speakers.

Takes me back to 82' and my friend and I would go to the corner store on the way to middle school and I would watch him play it. Love this game.

OMG, LOVE THIS! I can't remember the name of the gameroom at the corner of Kempwood and Campbell in Houston, but I was a regular back in the early 80s. I was ON FIRE one afternoon on my favorite game, Robotron2084. My one quarter lasted me way past an hour. I had 6.2 Million points when my Dad showed up and grabbed me, saying I better get my azz home, 'cause dinner was ready. I had 7+ (who knows how many?!) lives in reserve, and I had to walk away from the machine. Never before or since did I come close to matching that game. The brains couldn't shoot me, I moved like Neo to dodge their bullets! It was one of just a few times in my life I experienced being "IN THE ZONE" and it's awesome!
This was my favorite game as a kid I thought I was a hot shot when I broke a million the first time this guy is great.
I think the highest level I ever made it to was 31. This game is fast & stuff comes at you in every direction. This guy is impressive
This is a game you really need to be focused and in the zone. I can see playing this game for 30m to a hour to just get warmed up. Intense game!

I was pretty good at a lot of these games; I could play Missile Command indefinitely. But I always had a hard time processing ALL the stuff that is going on in Robotron. Death can come from so many directions! But it was still a favorite. The many sound effects were a treat.
Impressive. Today, nearly nobody would accept this kind of difficulty level nor be able to focus and play an early 80ies arcade game with this dedication and skill.
It needs 3D graphics and a character based story. And savepoints.

Had a coworker introduce me to this game on an arcade machine at our workplace. He's 30 years my senior, but we both have a blast with this game. My best score yet is 520,000 wave 22

man, I love this game. Have it in my game room. Not only could I never dream of hitting that kind of score, Ive only ever approached 100k. And I played this when it came out a ton. Massive quarter loss.
Have it in your game room 🤔I'd be playing it to death. 500k my best score, if I had this game, you'd get used to it and create a good technique to clear each screen. Practice makes perfect.

I played Robotron so much that I remember having a bad NO2 trip at the dentist when I was a kid. The sound effects were on a constant loop in my head.

@@tonymaurice4157 Check PS4 or Xbox stores in the console. I am pretty sure you can get it there. That being said, I can't find Defender in either of them.
@@MATTNMEMPHIS the fender should be easy to find. I found one at a garage sale. But if you wanted to find something on a console with other games yeah I'm not sure

I'm in the process of finishing my own machine, Robotron is the best of the best. Growing up, my family had a deli, and we always had 3 arcade machines set up. I got to play for free (we painted the quarters red and they gave those back, as many as I cared to paint) and I used to play this game half the night after we closed. People would see me through the window playing and be banging on the glass to get me to open up to sell them beer. I went thru a lot of (red) quarters playing this beast. I was seriously pissed when they took this out and brought in Sinistar.
Aah, the memories. I once got a score of around just slightly under 10 million in Robotron, in the early 80's. I let the game run out by letting all my lives die to keep under 10 million as we were not sure if it would roll over to 0 after that. I still had the whole top screen filled with lives when approaching that. It lasted hours, so I had friends bring me pizza and even was able to take a bathroom break when I had accumulated many lives.

More than 40 years later, this is still a unique video game in that it has not one, but two, joysticks!
I have it installed on my PC and, while I could score over a million points back in the 1990s, I can't even get to 400,000 today.
Remember playing this at Aladdin’s Castle and killing it at 10 years old. It was between Jungle Hunt and Front Line. I played this, Cloak and Dagger, Burgertime, Battlezone, Berzerk, and Dragon’s Lair til my fingers were about to bleed! Oh..forgot Gorf and Sinistar! Fun days for sure.
Fun days! No doubt. Battlezone was an asshole, though. So cool but so hard. Could say the same about Dragon's Lair, especially since it was 50 cents.
Loved Cloak & Dagger, another fantastic game. Like robotron with missions.

My favorite game of all time. At one point I held the world record. And played from 10 in the morning till 10 at night at my local pizza shop. Not to boast but I will, I also held the world record for Zaxxon 😎
Are you serious? Nice to meet you then! I played the hell out of Zaxxon and Super Zaxxon. Was one of the top Xeviois players in te world at 11-12 years old. Played a sporty Stargate and Defender as well. Millipede-killed it. Centipede-killed me. Tempest was probably my best game and I made many dollars (and quarters😂) at Aladdin’s Castle back in the day. Won a Tron tourney at 11 years old and the prize was a silver token that went through the machines and triggered the counter but came back. Don’t know how they did that. Would always watch them open the games and mess with the mechanism, but was too young to care.
I forgot about Joust. Probably could have played that game forever with the pterodactyl glitch, but was pretty salty without it too.
Had to love a pizza parlor in the '80s. It was basically required that they have at least a couple machines, if not ten. Pizza, cigarette smoke, beer and cola stickiness, darkness, and cool games. The absolute best.

total carnage!!! nice moves. watch on 1.5 speed for a thrill! im playing on ps2. i taped my controller to a pedestal but its had to get anywhere when you only start with 3 lives and the joysticks are tiny.. 1.6 mil was my best on the standup game.

@@psterud Yeah - Star Castle was fun game. I was always fascinated with ray tracing games like Tempest and the Star Wars game. Bloody brilliant entertainment for a quarter (read, "lots of quarters")
What did you use as a controller? I have MAME Robotron on my original XBOX and use the x-arcade Dual joysticks. Awesome experience like being in the arcade again, altho no standing up.
I use an Xbox 360 knock-off controller from Amazon. Nothing fancy.

Thanks, I used to play Defender a lot and managed to reach the same score you reached in Robotron :) Don't like playing it in an emulator, and original arcades are nowhere to be found. I loved Stargate too but couldn't master it; having an extra button (Inviso) to deal with was too much for me.

Worst part of this game was the random crashes. 30,000,000 points into the game and then it just decides to reset for no reason. The other upset was if you didn't count your extra men and they flipped back to 0 after 256
Fortunately I'm playing the modified Blue ROM Chip which fixes the infamous "corner bug". Eugene Jarvis described it as a bug "where the player practically shoots a bullet into the program stack... and it calls the initialization code".

I hate to tell you this, but I'm just going to have to as of like right now. I've accidentally stumbled upon/seen the 'Robotron 2084' deviantart that shows, a little girl clone {her name could've been Jana}. She was an extra character, that never appeared in the 'Robotron 2084' video game scene. It's all exaggeration to me.
The sound is everything in this game and you pretty much muted it.
5 entries per player? Is that really a feature? I guess it was to stop the best players from filling all the slots and discouraging other players trying to make the board.

The game waves roll back to 0 after wave 99, so I rolled it twice. I played the blue ROM, with the corner bug fix, so it does not crash randomly like the yellow ROM.
I wonder what the 2084 blocks mean? This game is extremely vibrant for the bleakness of the plot

I'm using the Solid Blue version on the most recent version of MAME, and it is frustrating because one out of every 15 or so "bullets" goes through the target, instead of destroying it. I've been learning a play-style where I assume that shooting something once won't kill it, and shooting it twice won't always kill it.

Version of this game I used to play didn’t give this many free men.
This is running on default settings. Three men to start, with extra lives every 25k. Greedy Arcade owners used to change settings to collect more quarters.
