  • This is the result of an experiment to see if I could synchronize a score-based MIDI drum notation performance with an actual drumless audio track from Freewill by Rush.
I wrote a Python script that takes a Freewill drum MIDI file as one input and a "timing MIDI file" as a second input. I created the timing MIDI file by recording myself tapping the snare drum on my electronic drum kit at the beginning of each measure while listening to the original audio track. The Python script then pushes and pulls the tempo per measure so that each measure aligns with the Rush performance. You can see the changing tempos just above the MIDI track. The Python script also randomizes the strike velocities and offsets the note timings just a bit to make it sound a tiny bit more humanized.
The drumless audio track was created with RipX DeepRemix (my favorite track separation tool for drums). The drum sounds are being generated by Superior Drummer 3 using the The Progressive Foundry SDX sound library.
