  • How to start building and painting a plastic model of a factory. This is how I paint the plastic brick to make it look realistic, using a mix of spray paint and artist acrylic paints.
In this video I try to explain how I paint a structure kit to try to reduce the “plastic” look of the moulded kit walls.
This building will be the first structure in a paper mill scene I am planning on my HO scale model railroad layout.
This channel follows documents construction of a new HO scale model railway in a newly expanded room. Freelance modelling the 1970's, inspired by the Algoma Central Railway. Through this series I am hoping to show you how to plan and build a model train layout (or at least, how I do it).

Great color combination. I always liked black mortar with red brick. Factory green windows would be appropriate. Looks great. I think I've only ever built one Kibri kit. They are indeed great kits. Cheers from eastern TN

Thanks! They provide a lot of detail parts with the kits as well.

Nice build. Stuff like this gets on my oldfactory nerve. This structure, while European, can readily pass for a North American building. The flat black base coat is an excellent idea and the decision to provide some interior detail is a good call. There is enough window space so this structure could even serve as a "front of the layout vignette" with full interior detail if desired.

I built the Kibri roundhouse, they’re good quality kits. The green is a good fit for the windows, darker colors are what I see on the old factories around Cleveland. Plus a century of smog really blackened the bricks and mortar.

Seems like a good kit so far! Dark colours make more sense on a build like this.

I have always liked the Kibri models once i found out about them. Sadly, i do not have a great deal of room on my current layout for big structures.
This is looking great. I look forward to seeing the rest of the build.

Thanks for watching, and thanks for the comment! This is the first Kibri kit I've bought. Won't be the last.

Looks very good. I was glad to see de brick details because I thought that maybe the multiple layers of paint would build up and eliminate the separation between the bricks. Great ideas that I will definitely use. Thanks

Always good to hear that something I say, show, or do might be helpful!

Nice paint job. I like the idea of a black undercoat - I will definitely try that on my next DPM kit. Once of the worst lies told by styrene model manufacturers: "realistically molded in 5 colors!"

I think the first time I tried this was on a DPM kit years ago.

The black primer coat is excellent. I use a dark grey when priming mine for the same reason to block out the light bleed. Looks good so far bud

Neat building. These kits ho way back (1960;s?) but Kibri did some fine moldings. These kits have been around, but yours is the first build-up video that I have seen. This looks quite adaptable to several industries. Thanks for your presentation.

Thanks! I like this building so far. I have another Kibri kit on the shelf as well. Might have to see what else I can find…

I enjoyed this video. I recently finished a large laser-cut wood freight house that has engraved brick detail and wish I'd used your painting technique for the walls. It looks good and wasn't nearly as tedious as filling in the mortar lines with paint or spackle after painting the brick. I did have a question. If you pre-paint the walls, how do you get a good bond for the corner joints? Or do you not paint the inside and joint areas? Also, what adhesive or solvent do you use on the plastic? Cheers from Wisconsin!

The walls on this kit have beveled edges. Since I sprayed the black from the front, very little overspray got onto the beveled surfaces. I used MEK to bond the walls together. I will probably put some black acrylic paint (thick artist paint) up the inside of the corners before I put the roof on to make sure there isn’t light leakage.

@@achb-railway Thanks for answering. I suspected that was the case. Cheers.
