As a chick AND a kiwi, i always copped so much sh*t for being a huge JT fan. it meant i was the only one wanting Aussie to win in the games against the kiwis, the only one watching state of origin, and the only one who wasnt a warriors fan. Because through and thgrough, i was a johnathan thurston fan and i still am. After losing my dad to a head injury which he sustained playing leaugue i grew up with a mum and grandmother who declared league as public enemy number 1. but i was always fascinated with what i knew my dad loved. ive somehow found a link to my dad through JT and as weird as it sounds, ive somehow found away of staying connected with him through following Jts amazing footy career. im grateful hes still very much involved with the game on the sidelines because ill truly miss him when he retires for good. not only was he an amzing player, but hes also an amazing man, father and husband...its been a total honour supporting him as a fan.
True inspirational man. Amazing half back and the best kicker i have ever seen. I remember when he came over to play against leeds in 2016 and gave his signed kicking tee's and scrum cap to young rugby fans, putting smiles on their faces and making there day. What a guy. A true sportsman. The man can't get any more respected. 👏👏👏
After tonight's gen next I realise we as fans become irrelevant as the players, still the toughest man I ever saw was Jonathan Thurston..nothing else will ever come close for class, sportsmanship love ya dude
mate, 100%!!! very few people speak on how fucking tough the man was JT got SMASHED all game every Origin game and they had no protection for the kicker like they do now he just copped it and sprang up to his feet legend
Saw him last night in Bundaberg with my 2 sons.It was a great night .From humble beginnings to a legend .One of the greatest players ever.Enjoy your retirement.Proud to be a Queenslander
feel blessed i witnessed this career start to finish in all its glory. im a broncos fan and re watching that grand final ending almost makes me cry tears of joy. no one deserved that more than him. he is the greatest to ever do it. no questions.
JT you are a future immortal. JT played with so much heart and so much determination. He was told he wasn't going to make it. His story is aspiring to any person whether it is Rugby League or anything else. JT done so much both on and off the field! Dignity, integrity and grace.
Every time I see that 2015 last minute try it gets me up and down. I'm a Broncos fan, seeing Oates come off his wing when Morgan had three guys on him pisses me off, but also happy for J.T and the cowboys for all the bum decisions they copped in those semi finals. Always stay on your man wingers!
No one could ever carry an average team and win against teams who had champion players like what JT did for the Cowboys! We will be lucky if we get to see another like him in our lifetime
yeah so much of his work was being impeccable with the little things, 40/20's repeat sets, choosing the right passes etc, and the % he got all that type of stuff right.
WHY JUST WHY oh the irony!! Ppl seem to forget that and it annoys me when kids say his first premiership was with Cowboys. Idgaf who you are I will correct you lol
Andrew Johns is the greatest of the modern era. Both he and Thurston were great in attack but what puts Johns well ahead is his defence. He could tackle a front rower like a front rower and an opponent rarely got past him. Defence was Thurston’s weakness. When Joey tackles you, you asked for the x-rays.
Brendan Daley pingas don’t make you play better dumbass. Joey would have played worse and he is still considered by many to be the greatest even when he’s cooked as fuck lol
Johnathan Thurston, Billy Slater, Cameron Smith, Greg Inglis, Cooper Cronk, Darren Lockyer...geez those players were a NSW's supporters worst nightmare...but dam weren't they all sensational players. They were winners.
I am still struggling with the concurrent retirements of JT, Captain Cam & Billy Slater! Although the departure of Roger Federer from the tennis arena was devastating, if Rafa leaves this year, I may be forced to quit the spectator’s box! (Although Carlos Alcaraz at 19 years of age may conquer new heights of unforeseen excellence.) Fortunately Leo Messi continues to dominate any soccer field, keeping my reservation open on my viewer’s chair!
Man I think it's Thurston then joey because of the drugs kind of like ali and Tyson if Tyson was not suck a party animal would have 100% been greatest of all time same as joey
Wonderful footballer no doubt. But their were many halfs before Thurston and Johns. As years pass by we soon forget. I saw Billy Smith. Magnificent with Langlands. You talk to many of the older men. Theyll tell you the toughest to lace a boot. Ask Tom Raudonikis about Billy Smith. I bet you get a pretty good answer. The era back than was when men were at their toughest. Yeh and Tom was pretty tough to.
Better than Johns better than Smith prob the best player in NRL history will be an Immortal, but he could play 6 or 7 by himself 13 v12 and still come off a winner, but between 2 number 7s Johns and Thurston, Thurston by a mile on and off the field. How he treated ball boys, fans, etc, he put bums on seats as a Rabbitohs fan Im so grateful that the try he scored that was a try was disallowed as, no matter how good we were that yr the Cowboys would have beaten us in the 2014 GF. But he got it all the following year. But everytime he got the ball near the try line id put my hands over my eyes waiting to see what he pulled out. But just had everything kicking. Running passing , step, and to think he was told he was too small to play NRL lol. But to give his ring to Price even though he would have got another one, just to have that thought in his mind at that time just shows what a sportsman he was. Never gave up and that showed with 5 secs to go in the GF of 2015. When evrryone else prob thought game over he was dancing around trying to create something and he did. The best GF since 89, im biased the biggest GF was 2014, but greatest GF ive watched in my life. He is a complete champion.
Johnathan Thurston is the greatest footballer I have ever seen total commitment to Rugby League in Queensland but that's not all life God gave him a talent I don't know his faith but we should all take note have total commitment to our families and is a god as well that's gaming us all our talents in life but family comes first and why before anything
What if Bowraville Greg had of been running at him instead of off him for 10 years in SOO? He’s not Joey in defence and he’s not The King. Very good player though and won a comp for the cowboys.
Brett Cameron Smith is the greatest player of all time. Why would I want to imagine that? What does that have to do with it. He had the best Queenslanders around him during origin (and a few good ones around him at the cowboys as well) plus Inglis! He won the cowboys a comp that’s his greatest achievement and puts him right up there. He just won’t make the greatest team ever. You have to follow it thru. He might be the half or 5/8 of this century but there’s a long way to go. That’s just the way it is.
There will be players who think and play like thurston but no one will ever be better
