Re: the Usnavi UsnaBi debacle… I’m not sure if it’s an excuse for everyone, but a lot of Puerto Ricans pronounce their V’s as B’s… Signed, a white girl who speaks some Spanish bc the majority of her friends are from PR 😬💕

As a latina I appreciate your knowledge of this! I kinda think it’s spanish in general. Bc like when spelling sometimes you have to differentiate between v and b and say big b or little v. But yea idk If it’s an explanation for everyone 😅
hi Colleen in Spanish the letter v is often pronounced as a “b” sound to English speakers, that is probably why some folks look like they’re saying “usnaby” but in Spanish it would still be “usnavy”. And for English speakers mimicking them they may not be aware that they would pronounce it differently 😊

About Usnavi: in a lot of Spanish speaking countries, the V is pronounced as B. Even in some incarnations of the Broadway cast, you could tell if an actor was ~legit~ Latinx if the let the ocasional “Usnabi” slip up

I can see how the pronunciation of Usnavi would be irksome; however, as a fluent Spanish speaker and fellow theatre lover, I have to say it isn't technically incorrect since in Spanish 'v' is pronounced as a soft /b/ and conversely 'b' is often pronounced as /v/. Not coming for you, I promise! Just sharing what I know 😀

I think sometimes I get angry because the alternative is overwhelming feelings of sadness or something similar, being angry can feel more like I'm in control or I can just be fed up with feeling the underneath emotion.

No but really it’s cause you’re miserable and I’m right there with you. I’m only 6 weeks along and I’m angry because I’m so miserable and it’s so unfair and restrictive being pregnant is.
Oh I was so miserable my first trimester sick as a dog exhausted and pissed at the world. And everyone expected me to be skipping around like Snow White with birds chirping. I wanted to throw darts at those birds.

yes it is exactly this reason, in Mexico especially. Hispanic/Latin people tend to say the “v” as a “b.” In mexico we say Bictor instead of Victor, even if the name is spelled like Victor with a V, we pronounce it as Bictor.
