A Dr. Horrible reference elevates any game
As an old man who grew up with these games this entire series gives me serious nostalgia goggles and makes me want to slip ultima easter eggs into my D&D games, the other side of that is I think only one person in my tabletop group is both old enough to get the references and also played any ultima and that was UO
I resonate. I placed some obvious Ultima and M&M homages into my series of books. I was lucky enough to exchange some emails with Lord B (Richard), and I even sent him a digital copy of book one in the hexalogy. 🙂

Oh man, I loved Ultima growing up. This game was a great! I was way too young to understand the game mechanics but I never let that stop Bob the paladin.

I've seen so many retro reviews of UUW, and they're always enjoyable. This one is no different!
This was so revolutionary when it came out. I sunk a lot of hours into it.
As a kid this blew me away...went to a friend's to see it and they had a soundblaster.
Even though it's only a few tracks the music for this game is amazing. At the time it was probably some of the most immersive pieces I had ever heard in a game.
For anyone searching for it (or music for other old PC games) keep in mind that almost every video uses emulation.

Yet again a superb upload, thanks! Very fond memories of first getting this game from some other BBS user over a V.22Bis modem connection with me uploading something and at the same time chatting and downloading this game. It took hours. Then installing and starting the game in the small hours. The music, the speech, the story, the engine/gameplay. It was revolutionary.
Dude, the last time I checked, your Ultima videos had a painfully low view count (I even commented about it, it simply didn't make any sense that they were below 100 views) - I'm so happy to see that they got (at least some of) the recognition they deserve. This is an amazing video of an amazing series! Cheers, man :D

I mean... would you blame the baron for not believing you? The Avatar sleeps naked... so... He suddenly sees you naked, in the bedroom of his daughter, with... morning.... uhm.. yah. I wouldn't trust him either.
It also makes sense why the baron believes you can help him recover his daughter. After all, with one glance he could extimate the size of your sword.

Same. Unfortunately it's rather unlikely to happen.
There have been at least two attempts to continue the Ultima Underworld series, but both became their own IP, and one of them was a massive disappointment.
Ultima Underworld I and II were works of genius and remind me of updated versions of the 8 bit Alternate Reality series concept which unfortunately ended with The Dungeon, but was far too ambitious for the hardware of the time anyway. UU was the first 'real' 3D dungeon crawler and as noted without Underworld there would not be System Shock, and beyond. Great review!

I seem to recall they had a "risk / reward" setup with skill points, where the basic mantras gave you more points, but with less control over where they were put, whereas the specific mantras would give you what you want, but only one point.
It would take a lot of self control to not save scum the skill point mantras!
Also i dont mind the whole, discovering spell words and mantras thing, makes you take notes and subsequent playthroughs easier, feels like a new game plus when you come back a second time.

I didn't really calculate the skill points gained, but perhaps I should have.
I don't mind it either, but it is good for people to know that that feature will make the first playthrough potentially more difficult.
Always wanted to play this one. Ultima 5 is my favorite, the 2-D tile technique is superior to "3-D", IMO

For a pure RPG? Yes a 2D, or in my opinion a 3D isometric view as well are superior to a first person 3D experience.
But for an imsim, of which UU is a proto version of, the first person view has its benefits when it comes to a different kind of immersion.
Admittedly, based on how games evolved, it's too easy to turn a first person 3D game into a shooter instead of a more in depth experience.
The most important starting Stat in this game is Strength. Every point in Strength gives you 2 points carry weight capacity.
Max Strength is 25, so max carry weight is 50
Looking at a door tells you it's Strength. Massive doors have infinite hit points. Anything else can be broken open, eventually, by punching it.
Lockpicks work a similar way. Massive doors are unpickable, you must find a key or button.
Don't bother with lock picks or the lock picking skill. Just move your weapon out of your hand and punch the door until it opens.
Your fist is the ultimate lock pick

There was an interview after this game came out where the developers admitted this wasn’t originally meant to be an Ultima game. So that is why there are so many odd things not related to Ultima.
2:50 I rarely used all 8-slots since its notorious 'inventory corruption bug' caused by carrying too many stuff but it just happens all the time.😆
I first heard about this game in a video about Daggerfall. Very interesting game.

I don't often watch LPs, but prefer livestreams.
There are exceptions though, so I'll bookmark your recommendation.
Admittedly, I am avoiding all Ultima content until I am finished with this series, as to not contaminate my feelings on the games too much.

* I.E. reviewers who show a knack for videos with qualities such as: good audio balance, good editing/pacing/scripting that's informative but not bloated, vocal delivery is appropriately emotive but not 'impulsively' exaggerative, the content can be engaged directly or softly absorbed, etc. As an aside, that many of you are criminally underexposed is an unfortunate commonality.

As for the distraction aspect, that too is very relatable, and I hope for you the best!
The movement direction problem is most likely because you are running the game too fast. Lowering your dosbox cycles to like 3000 might fix it, it worked for me.
That's interesting. I'll look into it! Fixing it would make subsequent playthroughs much more pleasant.
If you're holding shift, "easy mode", you won't walk off edges. You'll be stopped right at the edge
I've quite enjoyed your Ultima series retrospectives ever since I found them. I am curious if you plan to cover the two "Worlds of Ultima" games. Considering that a) they fall between 6 & 7, b) just reuse the U6 engine to tell other stories, and c) are even more tangential to the main series than the UU games I'm guessing not, but I figured I'd ask. 🙂
I have considered them, but they are pretty low in my priorities. Right now the main goal I have is to get from UU2 to UIX.
So the answer is a resounding: "maybe?"
This was the game where I realized anything with Warren Spector’s name on it I have to buy…. Until Disney acquired him
