Alot of mechanics don't check the camshaft synchronizer it gets so worn the wobble damages the sensor & eventually the new one they put in. Usually you just see a slight rubbing hardly noticeable on the 2 parts. Some new camshaft synchronizers come with a plastic alignment cap tool. Good video Marty.
Excellent video! well done, enjoy the close-up clear video shots. You taught me a lot about the sequence of operation, and diagnostics. Once again great job!!!
Thanks for taking the time to do the video! I replaced the sensor but didn't know about aligning it. Explains why it wouldn't start! Your efforts are greatly appreciated!
Thank you so much. I have this same problem and was able to follow along 100%. Unfortunately I have the same problem with my aftermarket CPS - it doesn't line up correctly at TDC. So I returned the part after working on my XJ for hours and running to the store several times. Guess I'll have to go to the junk yard and find an OEM CPS. Oh well. Anyways thank you for the time and effort you spent on this. It helps a LOT.

Nice. I seen tons of videos and read tons of words on forums related to jeeps and this is the first time i have seen and heard anything about the top dead center mark on the water pulley. If you buy cheap aftermarket parts, they do not have paint marks on the inside of the new synchronizer to align the reluctor window, you can also turn the oil pump drive with a long screwdriver to align it where you need it to drop the Syncro down in the hole properly. New aftermarket parts also do not have the holes drilled, there should be paint marks identifying proper alignment but yours had none. You can see when you aligned the junkyard part, the reluctor window thin metal aligned with some notches, you called INDENTS on the Syncro, no need for the alignment pin if you just use the notches after you get a good idea in your mind of proper alignment at 20:13 on the video, the Syncro metal and the reluctor metal meet at about 1:00 and 7:00 positions. its not for a newer year part, its the aftermarket cheap way of making it but they did not put paint marks, amigo. The reason for using a toothpick instead of a metal pin is in case somebody forgets to pull it out and they start the engine, the wood will break and not the new parts. Thanks for the detailed explanation, next time now you can use the part with no pinhole and no paint.
Yup I have one of these. A pain to mess with some times. Just take the plug out of cylinder 1 and get it on TDC . No need to take all the crap off the fans and all. Put finger on spark plug hole you will feel air suck in or want to push you off the hole when it wants to push you off. That's compression stroke. Then get to TDC. Easier than removing all the crap off the front.

I actually prefer this coil setup, putting the new coil pack in was as simple and unbolting and unplugging it and then plugging it back in and bolting it back in rather than have to unplug one plug wire at a time and trace it and try to put them back in the right spot and then try to trace down which one was wrong when it starts misfiring

The new part looks different from the old part. At 19:22 what are those three notches in the outer circumference of the casting that is not on the old broken part?
Joseph l frazier yes the new part looked different that’s why I didn’t like it and the parts store didn’t have anymore I don’t know if it was for a newer vehicle or what ? Didn’t want to take a chance so I got a used one that looked just like the broken one that’s why it looked dirty . Yes I put a used one in with permission from the customer. I understood most of what you explained to your audience and followers, although I do not understand the English language, and what I write now I write through a translation program. I hope you will answer my questions. First, is the camshaft sensor able to be replaced by replacing the spark distributor? Second, what is the reason that pocket engines consume so much fuel? Is there a solution to this very bad thing? Accept my greetings. Thank you
Hello brother not sure I understood you sorry but I’ll try my best to answer . You. Can just change the camshaft sensor without changing the synchronizer . My synchronizer was broken so I did both .as for fuel consumption I don’t know about that . Thanks for watching I appreciate you
If you're talking specifically about the Jeep 4.0L I can confirm, that yes they get bad fuel economy. It's the the way they were built, fuel MPG didn't seem to be that big of a concern. My 99 Jeep Cherokee only gets 10 mpg. Pretty horrible for a motor with such low horsepower. Mine does have 33" tires, but it still only got about 12 mpg with the stock ones. I've heard swapping to 12 hole injectors can help get better mileage, so I'm going to try that next.
Hi PC buys yes that’s one way to know if the fuel pump is working or not . When you spray TB it will start running until you stop praying the TB . If it stops running after you stop spraying That tell me I’m not getting fuel delivery from fuel pump if it’s a fuel issue . Thanks for watching I appreciate you
Thanks for making this video, Marty. My 02 Wrangler just threw a code so I went to Autozone to have them read it. Their OBDII code reader said it was the camshaft sensor, so I bought a new one and decided to UA-cam the proper way to swap it out. I was happy to find your video. I hope my swap goes as well. Question: If I'm only swapping the cap, do I need to find TDC or is that only if you need to pull and swap the entire shaft?
Great vid buddy! How do you know if it's on compression stroke or exhaust stoke at top dead center without the valve cover off? Or does it even matter.
Hi Project Dan H I’ve always done it just like in the video when I install a new distributor and if I’m off the vehicle will not start so I do another rotation and get the piston up again and crankshaft mark on 0 that gets me on TDC and vehicle starts .so if vehicle don’t start or has issues do another full rotation and get the piston back up and crankshaft pulley mark on 0. Hope that helps thank you and thanks for watching I appreciate you
