    FACT CHECK: Trident 2 D5 missiles DO NOT have a failsafe to detonate it once it’s been launched. Once she’s been launched, there’s no coming back. Also can you imagine the radiation fallout of 1 missile with four nuclear warheads exploding over the ocean or land? The explosion itself might trigger all four warheads to explode. Just for reference the nuclear explosion at Hiroshima during World War II was only 15kt vs the Trident 2 missile carrying four 475kt warheads or 1.9 Mts combined. A 1.9Mtn explosion would be more than 25% larger than the most powerful nuclear explosion the US has ever conducted which was the Castle Bravo explosion. That explosion created a fireball 70 miles wide & contaminated an area 7000 square miles with nuclear fallout.

    It's nearly criminal that this series was canceled in its first season. And you can tell that they had plans for the series, where with the one episode where they were doing a (geological?) survey and finding, IIRC, rare earth elements in abundance on the island - showing that they could've formed their own country with their own resource export.
    ...I'm guessing "rogue ballistic missile sub commander threatening to nuke D.C. for a government that murders their own" (coughObamadronestrikingU.S.citizensoverinthemiddleeastwithoutdueprocessslashtrialjustbecauseheconsideredthemterroristscough) didn't go over well in the political climate of the time. And the fact that similar shows like "The Last Ship" went on to be quite popular just shows that this show probably wasn't cancelled because of anything to do with ratings. In fact, despite them citing ratings for the canceling of it... it was still pulling in 5.68 million viewers on average when the show ended. Hardly anything to scoff at. I guarantee you ABC continued shows that had far less of an audience like that.

    • @NeverForget1776
      @NeverForget1776 2 роки тому

      They canceled it because it was inspiring of the wrong kind. It inspired people to question their government and that's a no-no. We didn't know it as well back then (10 years ago) but we do today. Back then it was just "Conspiracy Theory" to suggest there were powerful people seeking to change every worlds nation into a Chinese like Authoritarian state but not today. The Last Ship's enemy was the virus and not the government so it was OK to keep airing. It's surprising this show even got 1 season. Either it was filmed differently than pitched or someone at the US Federal Government censorship[ board wasn't paying close enough attention and this slipped through.

They likely were surfaced to retrieve crew, then when 'all hands accounted for except for 2' was spoken, they had already buttoned up and 'sunk' back under water, waitign for commands to either surface and re-claim the missing crew, or act.

      On contrary from ground silo you can theoretically launch from sub without code for that reason there are 5 keys on sub all over the ship and all must be turned simultaneously. Also i know its for dramatic effect but really this "self-destruct" ooops button is really dumb, there is no such thing on real missiles of would completely negate all security and made weapon unreliable because uf you can send signal that disable/destroy weapon enemy can do it too and neutralize you nuclear arsenal.

      @@piotrd.4850 No the test launch is done on hot silo with codes and everything again the one silo cannot launch even if the want silos are in groups and another silo must validate the launch orders and turn the keys. There are videos explaining how it works in detail. Nevertheless its not like in film there is no big red button, and also there is no ups button once missile is launched its independent vehicle. Also like media loved to portrait WRONGLY no Trump cannot just go rogue and order nuclear strike that order also must be approved by joint chiefs of staff or something like that. Every step is independently double triple checked for exactly this reason someone going rogue. And on top of that launch crew can always belay order and are required to do it if they have even shadow of doubt also they can permanently disable silos if you try take it by force. Did you ever seen how old is that hardware? And for good reason because is self-contained system that cannot be accessed from outside and nobody know machine code there are few floppy disks locked in vault and that's it.

    OK That is a Trident II missile; before it can "sing the song of it's people," it must burn all three stages then the post-burn vehicle must orient itself into its pre-planned deployment window in space. Once there, it will release EIGHT Multiple Independently-targeted Re-entry Vehicles (MIRVs). The MIRVS will re-enter the atmosphere before detonating at their pr-programmed altitude with a 475 kiloton yield EACH. Flight time ~15 minutes. Launching strategic weapons is an irretrievable act; there is no do-over or my-bad. Like pulling the trigger on a gun, you can not bring it back. once it's away, all you can do is wait. Also, this is absolutely NOT how an SSBN strategic missile launch works.
    I can't stand it when the movies do ZERO research and just pull shit out of their ass. Lazy.

Unlike what you would do I was not stating what I did to feel better about myself, I never sought out that position, I just ended up there as a natural progression of my career, and the fact I happened to be standing in the office when they were assigning people to the contract. Additionally, I had less than zero to do with designing the missiles I only worked on the support system, launch tubes, and security systems. Andre Baugher's character in the police comedy Brooklyn 99. He was the heart of that show for its 8 season run.

    They canceled this great show because it was exposing the corrupt and criminals within our government. They always cancel great shows like these when the enemy is not foreign but domestic.

      well... Yes. no codes, only keys. The only thing keeping an SSBN crew (it would take the whole crew "Crimson Tide" is BS) from firing an ICBM is their patriotism and loyalty to the country. Unlike the other legs of the Nuclear Triad, the SSBN fleet can affect an independent launch.

      @@YukarisGearReviews Look I did 20 years in the Navy and worked on submarine weapons systems for another 10 when I got out. No, they are sent an Emergency Action Message (EAM) that is authenticated by the CO, XO, and Weapons Officer. All must concur the message is authentic by verifying the code in the message. once that is done, condition 1SQ for strategic missile launch is set, and the submarine is taken to missile lunch depth and hovered. CO inserts his Nuclear authorization key, and the Fire Inhibit Switch (FIS) key is inserted by the Weapons Officer. I am not going to go into more detail as to what else is required, but no, there are absolutely no codes sent to the submarine. ua-cam.com/video/Ya6X36a1UIk/v-deo.html
