Also can you imagine the radiation fallout of 1 missile with four nuclear warheads exploding over the ocean or land? The explosion itself might trigger all four warheads to explode. Just for reference the nuclear explosion at Hiroshima during World War II was only 15kt vs the Trident 2 missile carrying four 475kt warheads or 1.9 Mts combined. A 1.9Mtn explosion would be more than 25% larger than the most powerful nuclear explosion the US has ever conducted which was the Castle Bravo explosion. That explosion created a fireball 70 miles wide & contaminated an area 7000 square miles with nuclear fallout.

Andre Braugher is and always will be one of the great Actors of our day. Unfortunately Mr. Braugher Born on July 11, 1962 in Chicago Ill. Died on December 11, 2023 of Lung Cancer in New Jersey according to his IMDB page he was an accomplished actor who took his craft to new heights during his career. He was one of the good ones who will never be forgotten. God Bless him. And thank you all for the great remarks detailing his career. They say there is no better way to honor someone then by remembering there accomplishments in life.
This was a great show. A big part of the reason was the calm confidence of the Captain, he and Benjamin Sysco from DS9 are two of the most bad-a-- dudes out there.
Mr. Braugher was way too young. His full range of talent was not allowed to be exhibited, in passing much too early. His personality mannerisms & style were unique and especially memorable, as some other 'few' contemporary talents. God bless & keep you Mr. Braugher.

It's nearly criminal that this series was canceled in its first season. And you can tell that they had plans for the series, where with the one episode where they were doing a (geological?) survey and finding, IIRC, rare earth elements in abundance on the island - showing that they could've formed their own country with their own resource export. ...I'm guessing "rogue ballistic missile sub commander threatening to nuke D.C. for a government that murders their own" (coughObamadronestrikingU.S.citizensoverinthemiddleeastwithoutdueprocessslashtrialjustbecauseheconsideredthemterroristscough) didn't go over well in the political climate of the time. And the fact that similar shows like "The Last Ship" went on to be quite popular just shows that this show probably wasn't cancelled because of anything to do with ratings. In fact, despite them citing ratings for the canceling of it... it was still pulling in 5.68 million viewers on average when the show ended. Hardly anything to scoff at. I guarantee you ABC continued shows that had far less of an audience like that.
They canceled it because it was inspiring of the wrong kind. It inspired people to question their government and that's a no-no. We didn't know it as well back then (10 years ago) but we do today. Back then it was just "Conspiracy Theory" to suggest there were powerful people seeking to change every worlds nation into a Chinese like Authoritarian state but not today. The Last Ship's enemy was the virus and not the government so it was OK to keep airing. It's surprising this show even got 1 season. Either it was filmed differently than pitched or someone at the US Federal Government censorship[ board wasn't paying close enough attention and this slipped through.

They can't launch Trident on the surface, so they stayed in the bay but descended to around 50 feet depth so that the missile could clear the tube underwater. For whatever reason they didn't show this little process onscreen.
As others said... the Sub was not parked 'on' the beach, it was out in the bay.. likely far enough out that it could sit between 50-100m in the water. They likely were surfaced to retrieve crew, then when 'all hands accounted for except for 2' was spoken, they had already buttoned up and 'sunk' back under water, waitign for commands to either surface and re-claim the missing crew, or act.
While they lack a self destruct measure there have been proposals made to install one. Especially since agreements signed in the 70s imply such a system would be desired. Nothing has come about so far.

On contrary from ground silo you can theoretically launch from sub without code for that reason there are 5 keys on sub all over the ship and all must be turned simultaneously. We do have the GMD system, but we only have 45 total interceptor rockets with a success rate of 30%, which means we only have a 30% chance to knockout 1 warhead, trident SLBMs have 4 warheads in them. Plus most of the GMD system is based in Alaska and California, and depending on were the sub was at launch it could take 4 minutes to reach DC. The missile is designed and qualified to be able to carry 8 W-88s, though. At least in its initial operational capacity. Safety reasons, among others, may have caused it to drop since. In any case, most open sources for the last 10+ years seem to agree that this full payload is not used anymore. No, they are sent an Emergency Action Message (EAM) that is authenticated by the CO, XO, and Weapons Officer. All must concur the message is authentic by verifying the code in the message. once that is done, condition 1SQ for strategic missile launch is set, and the submarine is taken to missile lunch depth and hovered. CO inserts his Nuclear authorization key, and the Fire Inhibit Switch (FIS) key is inserted by the Weapons Officer. Nuclear tipped birds do not have a short or self destructive measure. It’s the point of deterrence once’s the keys are turned there is no going back.

I love it when keyboard warriors resurrect an almost-year-old comment in order to feel better about themselves. Yes given unlimited resources and knowledge, a government can reverse engineer the missile. but that is not what we were talking about here genius. Unlike what you would do I was not stating what I did to feel better about myself, I never sought out that position, I just ended up there as a natural progression of my career, and the fact I happened to be standing in the office when they were assigning people to the contract. Additionally, I had less than zero to do with designing the missiles I only worked on the support system, launch tubes, and security systems. That's carrying 8 W88 Nuclear warheads. Those warheads are 30 times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb.
Real missiles don’t carry as many as 8. Plus, some use the smaller, much less powerful W-76 ones.
The missile is designed and qualified to be able to carry 8 W-88s, though. At least in its initial operational capacity. Safety reasons, among others, may have caused it to drop since. In any case, most open sources for the last 10+ years seem to agree that this full payload is not used anymore. It should even have been declared in arms reduction treaties with Russia, if I recall correctly.

well... Yes. no codes, only keys. The only thing keeping an SSBN crew (it would take the whole crew "Crimson Tide" is BS) from firing an ICBM is their patriotism and loyalty to the country. Unlike the other legs of the Nuclear Triad, the SSBN fleet can affect an independent launch.

No, they are sent an Emergency Action Message (EAM) that is authenticated by the CO, XO, and Weapons Officer. All must concur the message is authentic by verifying the code in the message. once that is done, condition 1SQ for strategic missile launch is set, and the submarine is taken to missile lunch depth and hovered. CO inserts his Nuclear authorization key, and the Fire Inhibit Switch (FIS) key is inserted by the Weapons Officer.
