  • Meet Tom Blomfield, Principal Oboe of the Philharmonia Orchestra, to learn more about what it’s like to be an oboist and to discover the fascinating story behind the Strauss Oboe Concerto. Created in the aftermath of World War II, this nostalgic piece is one of the few opportunities an oboe soloist gets to stand in front of a symphony orchestra. The concerto also forms a part of the Philharmonia Orchestra’s great recording legacy - the Philharmonia made the first recording of the piece in 1947.
Tom Blomfield performed the Strauss Oboe Concerto on 19 January 2020 as part of the Philharmonia Orchestra’s 75th Anniversary celebrations, conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen.
The Voices of 1945 Concert is supported by the Nathan Family
Principal Oboe’s Chair Endowed by Elizabeth Aitken

I love the latest works of Strauss, the Oboe Concerto, the Second Horn Concerto, Duetto Concertino, The Four Last Songs and the two Sonatinas for wind orchestra.

As with so many things on UA-cam I found this more or less at random.
Thank you to the Philharmonia for making this nice film. What a great introduction to this marvelous piece. And thank you to Tom. His playing seems a very good reflection of how he is as a person: genuinely modest with a love of music that shines through. What I really like about the playing that I heard on this film was the lovely way he produces the sound: nothing gets in the way of a genuine legato and this allows for real expressive possibilities. Much easier said than done and very much rarer than you might imagine. I wish him every success.

Potresti affermare di essere nella Philarmonia Orchestra solo perché sei bravo?

It's a bit like tennis players rewinding their handgrips. Has nothing to do with tennis, but needs to be done.
