Max, these videos are some of the most amazing and important videos out there. A whole generation of budding animators and storytellers will see these videos, take your lessons to heart, and produce true art. You're doing something major here, and I'm secretly waiting for the day someone wins "Best Animated" at the Oscars and says "it's all because of this Maxime Lebled guy."
Thank you
Haha gosh, you're too kind. Thanks Erick!
I've been watching your animations for a number of years and your animations 5 years ago were already fantastic and they've only gotten better ! Much love from Finland and good luck in the future.
Fantastic work! Being able to see the entire process really makes you appreciate the final product.
jesus this is so good. I knew a lot of time and effort went into the making of it, but im still impressed after watching this video
We unfortunately can't do anything that would need particles, because they can only be added to item submissions by Valve, not workshop artists
Really enjoyed this, your attention to detail and passion for the work is inspiring. Thanks for sharing :)
Holy crap you are so unbelievably talented
Thank you for Dota 2019 True Sight Max! It was fkn great mate!
I don't play dota 2,but these videos have inspired me to mess around with these characters in dota 2 sfm.I really hope one day I can be a somewhat skilled animator. And maybe I will enter some of valves future short film contests.
Yay thanks for the breakdown!!!
Btw u have a very nice voice lmao
Hello, Max, if I am mistaken but you did not create dota film this year? If thats true, why? I'm kinda miss your creations
true. I was disappointed he didn't have an entry this year
@@RaisinSlayer He worked on the Void Spirit animation
brilliant.
such awesome breakdown.. soo much hard work and effort.. but Hearing the music in artifact @9.26.. nostalgic dead game..
Je viens de découvrir ton travail par le biais d'un commentaire que tu as laissé sur l'OST d'artifact , comme quoi donner son opinion sur internet ça peut parfois servir .
La qualité des animations est exceptionnelle , vraiment du beau travail .
that detail.. puck is already watching..!! who else watched to all that part of the video.. support :P
I feel like one of the biggest lessons to take away from these short films, is the huge, HUGE importance of pacing.
I noticed in both 2017 and 2018, the story of the directing is "cutting down" - it happens to me, too.
Your attention to detail and general cinematic style are really great, and both of the shorts here have a really great, polished look - but they really suffer from their cut-down form, and I think that was a big issue with your 2018 entry - as to why it was "confusing" to some. It's not an easy thing to identify, because when you cut down on work that you've been watching for weeks/months, it's hard to evaluate the damage it does to the narrative and to the pacing. Is it because 1:30 is too short? Do we need more time to make the best short films? I dunno (though I think raising the time limit to 2:00 wouldn't be a bad idea)
cutting down for time is a VERY risky thing to do - even just doing something as simple as shedding a few seconds off a shot can have a domino effect on messing up the pacing. I think for someone who wants to get into making short films, my main advice, would be to not aim to make a 1:30 short - and to instead, aim to create something 1:00 or 50 seconds long. (I'm assuming the next Short film contest will have the same time limit). Taking a shorter video that works, and then expanding on it will give you expansive freedom - and ideally, will result in very little cutting down. This is a strategy I'm gonna try for next time, because when I made my short film last year, I realized that I totally wrecked certain parts of it by being too aggressive with my cutting.
regardless, it's always a lot of fun, and if anyone watching this is thinking about trying to make a short film - please do, go for it. It's a great way to spend a few weekends.

Oh, and to what you mentioned about reattaching the bones to models - there's actually an intuitive way to do this. Right click on a clip/multiple clips,, go to utilities, and select reattach from there - it'll do the process batch to all models in all shots.
Thanks for taking the time to write such a long comment! And yeah, if I participate for a fifth time (I might not be able to, but if I didn't, it would be for a very good reason), I'll definitely be keeping the lessons from this one in mind, and start smaller narrative-wise...
Are you planning to take part in the next contest? Love your work especially your professional approach to the details :)
talent
If you're doing future fighting animation scenes
My request is to have more dynamic camera angles in those fights
It just makes the fight feel more badass and exhilarating

That ceeeeeeeeeeb moment
I swear here was a commend saying "your voice is orgasmic..." But now its gone and perhaps only 10-20 people saw it.
Didn't notice that puck 😂😂😂
gaben must proud with you bro.
Hi Max, I am looking for some good ready-made maps except than Dota 2 maps that are available by default in SFM2,
Like that beautiful forest map you used in " Wiles of the Wisp " video.
is there any source for download them ?
Hi! The map you're talking about was custom-made just for my short film. I haven't released it publicly.
Yeah this is cool and all but when r u gonna finish Ghosts 2?
Aha, someone's got Angel of Sagittarius on his wall.
2:52 pudge from hell
I legit forgot you still make content
Also how was the rope bridge effect achieved?
It's a prop from the old Source 1 tutorial map
FIirst thank you so much about this video even though I can't catch this. How long have you been making this video? Did you use SFM or SFM2(dota2 client)? I still can't change the light type in SFM2.
SFM2.
@@MaxLebled I can't fand direct lights and point lights in S2FM ,can you tell me how I creat them?
No such thing as "direct" lights and point lights in here, unfortunately. It's all spotlights!
@@MaxLebled Thank you for your tutorial, I have learned so much
When do you find time to create these backstage? Animators very busy people)
Well, as you can tell, it took me over a year :P
Bro, can you answer what applications are used in making your animation?
example
SFM - for the main application making animation
or blender - make the body
and other programs
i cant find hammer app :(
3ds Max, After Effects, Vegas, Photoshop, a bit of Maya here and there, and of course the engine tools (which SFM is a part of)
@@MaxLebled thank you for replying
Hey.
Bring back The Heavy & the Medic Fall in Love
About 10 minutes into ur vid and I think Valve should hire you to make tutorials for SFM reborn
max, what thing you have for ti 9 SFM?
hello there, may i ask you some questions?
1.I create an io character,it seem like a blue solid ball, how to let it seem like in game and your sfm viewport?
2.How you made the Tether between io and Bristleback ?
thank you very much
1. I instanced Io's main particle system, which automatically instanced the sub-systems as well, and let me tweak everything so that they would all behave correctly. This also let me tweak the look, that's why my Io looks a bit different from the in-game one.
2. I also started from the existing tether particle system, instanced it and tweaked the look, but much more significantly. The control points 0 and 1 define the starting and end points of the tether, and the rotation of one of those points serves as a vector for the "bend", the curve of my tether (unlike the usual in-game tether, which is always a straight line)
@@MaxLebled thank you so much,it's very helpful!!
baby invoker!
What app u use pls tell me
Quick queston.I am new to the source 2 sfm and can only find low poly versions of these characters.Wondering if you could give me some of the filenames for these characters?
EDIT: Haha turns out the tools version of Dota 2 automatically sets the LOD for the models to the minimum...I'm duuummbbb.
I've only remade a few parts myself and imported higher resolution materials. Everything else is as it appears in-game. The meshes I use in my movies aren't magically higher-poly 😀
@@MaxLebled Ah.ok lol.
I have waited for this since you said that you had to shorten it in a comment, but you posted in a night before my calculus exam. What a shame :(
any tips or guide to learn making model/ porting model to sfm?
because i dont know where to start
I wouldn't know either, I haven't ported models from other games to SFM either. I have a vague idea of how the process would go, save for the part of extracting the models from something else, because that's going to change from case to case...
was iron talon an item before the neutral item stuff etc? :S
Yes!
@@MaxLebled thanks for the reply!
Man, you could do more of your videos. I think everyone waits a lot for a new video of yours.. one per year 😔
Yep, sorry, unfortunately I get quite busy working on other things... I hear you though, I wish I could do animated shorts full time
It would be fantastic if you export that skydome from bane's realm to the SFM workshop
SFM2 has no workshop
@@MaxLebled Sfm2?
@@barghest8763 The Source 2 version of the SFM.
soy de peru hazlo otra vez y hazlo de nuevo si te gusta lo que haces y nosotros nos encanta que te guste buenos trabajos bro ty por las animaciones
WHAT PROGAM YOU USE FOR MAKE CINEMATICS OF DOTA 2?
Mostly 3ds Max, the Source 2 engine itself with all its tools (model editor, hammer map editor, the sfm, etc.), After Effects, and many others... but these are the core ones, I'd say
@@MaxLebled can u teach me master? i can pay for zoom class
Sorry, I can't. But that's why I made these videos; to help people out!
Where did you find model roshan and lane creep in SFM? I can't find it pls help
Are you sure you're using the SFM that is integrated into the Dota 2 tools, rather than the "standalone" version?
@@MaxLebled yeah i use sfm link from dota2 tool but when i gonna create character i found only hero character, Where is roshan and other creep?
@@artyanim1641 create the model instead of going through the character templates
