Not many high school basketball players have a half-dozen youngsters waiting for more than a half-hour for an autograph. But not many players have been featured in Sports Illustrated as freshmen. Mater Dei's Schea Cotton has experienced both, yet you'd never know it. The unassuming 16-year-old forward seems to have everything in perspective -- especially the attention. "My friends teased me about it," said Cotton of the SI story last season, "but I tried to keep a cool head. What I don't want is to have them look back in a couple of years and call me a has-been." Not much chance. In an easy 86-61 victory over Anchorage Service yesterday in the Reebok/Above the Rim Tournament at Torrey Pines High, the 6-foot-5 Cotton hit 13-of-15 shots and pulled down eight rebounds. Of his 13 field goals, seven were dunks. Power slams, two-handed backhand slams, one-handed slams, running slams, standing slams. And one missed slam that brought the crowd of 2,300 to its feet because it was on a follow where he jumped over two defenders, then drew a technical for hanging on the rim
Bro when rappers like LB based Crooked-I are naming & making songs about his legacy …what 30yrs later? Maaann.. if that don’t tell you something I’m not sure what does? Dude is an absolute legend! & I hear a great coach & humble great dude thats given back coaching training the youth these days
If he was the "one" he would of been in the NBA. If you can play they will find you even in China or halfway across the globe. Alot of these guys never developed .They had insaine athletisism but in the NBA every player is a athlete .Even the guys who don't look athletic are. If you have a 45" vert that's great. But can you shoot can you pass ? Can you defend or get used to not being "the one" like you were in high school ?
The Collins Twins were in that video as well. Chris Burgess also was on that summer league team. Cali had the high school basketball scene pumpin that summer.
@_nick_d you are right about that. I grew up in Laguna Hills and played NJB out there and Eric's dad was a referee. I remember seeing Eric when I was a kid and damn he was super tall.
Great vid. This makes me feel so terrible for Schea Cotton. At one time he was in SI being touted as the next big thing in basketball. Now a search for Schea at wikipedia turns up nothing. What went wrong for this kid? He seemed to have all of the things a player needs to make it in the league yet now he is just an unknown to many fans.
Kswiss won that tournament KG balled all weekend I played for the 13u kswiss baron was playing for our 16u with Dino Tanner them were the good old days
Music choice couldn’t be any more fitting honestly. #Dreamy & relaxes you yet makes you wonder “what if” in Schea’s case. Imagine going up vs that la all star squad w collins twins schea & bdiddy running point. Man that would have been frustrating! Lol
The fn Goat from Cali!! I don’t care what any of these haters say! He inspired me to re-asses how serious I play the sport & wanted to be like him as an impressionable 10yo after seeing him score 39pts & when I say 1 player absolutely willed an entire team over a really good & balanced Fremont of Oakland squad it was schea the manchild that we thought while looking in a program & seeing grade level “10” listed next to his name thinking it absolutely had to be a typo. Nope! He was dunking on cats ala shawn kemp kinna ripping off the rims & then had midrange jumper pull up jumper was smooth as it comes, could handle, rebound, block shots.. there was simply nothing he couldn’t do back then. Having an eventually pro older brother in James cotton I’m sure made him to be way advance before his time/peers & the manchild he was in 9th & 10th grade. 😢 I’m 😢 when I say this, but I just wish like tennis or golf this guy could have left hs & entered the draft as a 10th grader. He was that good & that ready for the nba at that young!! Best hs player (& as a soph too) I’ve ever seen & I’ve watched ca hs bball for 30+ yrs & seen that many state championships. Tyson chaandler & deshawn Stevenson we’re very good also! & as you can see baron Davis was doing baron like things back then in this clip as well!
You have to wonder what would have happened to Schea had the NCAA allowed him to go to UCLA (invalidated his SAT scores) straight out of HS. Instead he eventually ended up at Bama, left after his sophmore year and went undrafted. He'd have looked great playing alongside Baron at UCLA.

I don't think there was a better player than Shea cotton from California 💯

Cotton & Davis at UCLA would have been must see TV!
Teams would have wanted to forfeit at half. Like lil league used to end with 10 run mercy rule! Lol
Then they would have played USC- Kevin Augustine; definite must see TV in that era

7ft eric chenowith from villa park was on the dark colored jersey team.
@@bryangonzales7627EC was another one that didn’t stand a chance in the league, all he did was post up on block back in hs

Oh sorry man, Baron attended Cross Roads School a private school in Santa Monica, CA.
