  • How to use a Pulse Oximeter.
    What is a pulse oximeter?
A pulse oximeter is a device that is used to measure oxygen saturation levels (SPO2 levels) / oxygen levels in the blood. The pulse oximeter gives out two readings which are oxygen levels and pulse rate.
In this video, the usage of a fingertip pulse oximeter at home is demonstrated. You can measure your oxygen levels and pulse rate within the confines of your home by using a fingertip pulse oximeter at home.
What happens when oxygen levels drop below the normal oxygen level in the body?
It is very important for the oxygen levels in the body to be in the normal range. The proper functioning of the body depends on oxygen which is carried by the blood to all the cells in the body. When the oxygen levels in the body drop, the functioning of various organs like the brain, heart, and kidneys can get affected. The condition of low oxygen levels in the body is called hypoxemia.
Importance of fingertip pulse oximeter in the times of COVID-19
According to medical experts, low oxygen levels are registered in coronavirus patients. So, it is important to monitor the oxygen levels in the blood to detect covid pneumonia in the early stage. COVID pneumonia is a deadly condition seen in severe covid cases.
But a pulse oximeter cannot be trusted solely to detect coronavirus. Low oxygen levels can be a symptom of various other conditions as well.
What is the normal oxygen level reading?
You can find the normal pulse oxygen level readings here 0:49
When the oxygen levels drop below the ideal oxygen level readings, it is a cue to consult a doctor.
This video also lists out the steps to be followed before using a pulse oximeter. Watch the video to know more

[EDIT: TO AVOID MISUNDERSTANDING] There is missing instructions, if the SpO2 reading is below 95% there is some health issue with the person, at 95% the person is dehydrated that person should drink about 10 cups of water [spread over a few hours] , [one cup of water ] 20 minutes apart, half a hour before any meal, 90 minutes after any meal, when it gets to 98% stop drinking, because you are now hydrated, In fact the SpO2 should suddenly jump from 95% to 98% in between two readings. Keep drinking 8 glasses of water per day unless you do a lot of exercising then drink 10 glass of water, when you are not dehydrated the readings should be between 97% to 99% and you can see a strong relationship between the amount of water you drink, the amount of exercise you do and the SpO2 reading. That 2% or 3% difference in SpO2 is the ability for the red blood cells to carry Oxygen, at 95% the red blood cells are clogged up.

@@blackmanta774 It seems like over 94% is what you would expect for an average, healthy individual. Over 90% seems to be deemed acceptable for people who may have chronic respiratory diseases like COPD. That's what I've gathered, anyway.

I had pleurisy 4 yrs ago. Taken to hospital and my oxy readings were abt 92. Dr wanted me to stay for 1-2 days but I wanted to go home. She did an ABG test then, I waited only 20 mins and she agreed I was ok to return home with 2 antibiotics. I would say usually 93% and above is ok but check with a doc first who will ask if other symptoms.
