Dr Han: 🗿
If you not surgeon then you not autistic, ever thought of that
(X) Doubt
The problem with the good doctor is that the autistic main character is written as an emotionally unstable genius and as I and all my autistic friends will tell you, we are not geniuses. We are however emotionally unstable.
I got a lot of personal issues regarding the genius stereotype, bc ironically since I'm a smart student, they don't think I'm autistic (or any form of neurodivergent) at all. At any rate, though, I'm tired of being seen as the intelligent kid, I'm not as put together as they like to think I am. I got a lot of issues that go unchecked bc of my good grades.
On a 1-10 scale, How emotionally unstable are you ?

he wasn’t fired for being autistic he was fired for being incompetent, rash, impulsive, walking out in the middle of an open heart surgery twice, and being unable to control his emotions. Dr Han was the hero.
He isn’t incompetent but he is not doing himself any favors in this scene
Tbf bro studied for years in med-school and was on-par when it comes to ideas with one of the best surgeons only to be sent to a department where he does not even want to be all while being unable to control his emotions well.
@@raddle8516 true and he does become a surgeon and at the end of the season and being a surgeon was the dream his dead brother encouraged him to do
Having issues controlling your emotions is part of being autistic.
Didn’t bro walk out in the middle of a surgery too?
I don’t think they has malicious intent when they overshot the whole “brilliant autistic surgeon” trope I just think they tried a bit too hard and missed their mark.
they tried waaaaay too hard. it's fucking hilarious. sincerely, an autistic person
None of the writers where autistic, neither the director, or people on the first test screenings, they didn't do it maliciously, but they tried... Can't say it was a good try, but a try none the less
The whole show's based on a Korean drama, and autism there is often marginalized or shoved into a corner, especially in media.
So the fact the show exists at all is... something
@@BubbyBoy Ironically i think my favourite representation of autistic characters in a tv show comes from a k-drama i watched recently about an autistic lawyer, they use the savant trope but she actually has a lot of physical autistic and social traits that are really well done.
@O'grimbo The sour I'm glad to hear that, honestly. Korea will always be, like, a decade behind progressive ideas, but it's nice to hear progress is made in the first place. Sure you don't remember the name of the drama?
My parents really liked this show for some reason, so I ended up watching it a lot. My first reaction was "why on earth did this go past one season, it ended on a good note"
Money, of course. The producers thought they could milk it past its expiration date.
They were wrong, as businesspeople usually tend to be in the creative industry.
You're clearly NOT a surgeon.
I watched it when it first came out. Liked the first season, but yeah it didn't need a second one. Didn't even watch the second one (though this I AM A SURGEON!! meme makes me feel like I should if they're really dropping BANGERS like this.)
Shaun is now the most punchable character in the show and Morgan gets her new backstory every episode.
This show is okay as a guilty pleasure but shouldn’t be taken seriously.
It wasn't very good, but it was still fun and entertaining for the first two or three seasons. It completely fell off after season three, though
Dr. Murphy : I am a surgeon Dr. han I am a surgeon I am a surgeon
Dr. House: Its never Lupus
Because it really never is
@@bDe4d it was once
@@bDe4d It's fun, I grew up thinking lupus was this ultra rare disease thanks to the show, and now that I'm on the med field, I know that is way more common than I thought
@@sadvec6328 It's common because you are in the hospital. Where do you think people with lupus-like symptom goes when it gets bad?
My friend has lupus and when she was diagnosed one of her other friends said, "but it's never lupus!" however she wasn't familiar with House so she was just like, "No...I really have lupus..." and they had to explain 😭
It's interesting how I've saw so many people saying that this show is a good representation of autistic people. At the same time I've also seen a lot of people saying it's a bad representation. I think it depends on the degree of autism that the person usually interacts with and how much they can put up with the trope of "autism=genius".
A lot of moms will watch this show and that movie with Bruce Willis and puff their chests to say "It's really good representation"
My mom does stuff like this all the time. I remember when she watched the movie with the cursed doll, and she went around saying to her religious friends that it was a perfect representation of how evil works
@@Sorrelhas helpp 😭😭😭
@@Sorrelhas My mom also does this sometimes. Sometimes people take a work of fiction as a complete representation of the reality of something. Although you as a writer can research to make something as close to reality as possible, nothing prevents you from writing whatever you want(both for good or for bad).
The thing is, there is no perfect representation of autistic people because autism varies so drastically from person to person. The Good Doctor is a probably a good representation of certain autistic traits, but not every person with autism shares those traits. I think that's where a large part of the controversy comes from.
I'm just glad I'm no longer compared to Sheldon
I really felt bad about him when the episode came out but I cant help but laugh at this so much
Because he's screaming like a big dunderhead. I'm autistic myself and I even laugh in the face of people who act like this.
Edit: Not literally of course. I meant to say I feel incredible disdain for an adult man acting like I did as an eight-year-old. I know folks that have it more severe can't help it but I still feel an irrational disgust towards it from secondhand embarrassment.
@@thebreadbringer I've seen people with terrible cases of autism and they have a huge inability to communicate, when they get distressed they raise their voice to points like this and its kind of fucked up that you'd make fun of someone meanwhile your autistic too.
@@Giorgio-sp8fo I mean it's different when you are also autistic, because as an autistic person seeing someone freakout about things I used to freak out about when I was younger, they just seem silly, yes perhaps they are higher on the spectrum, but if I went through getting bombarded by loud noises, touching objects and textures that made me feel disgusting, and not being able to communicate, eventually getting used to these things (with occasional moments of being overwhelmed) seeing a grown man act like how I did when I was 12 is just weird, it's not wrong to think that
@@grawlix-man463 Exactly. When I said laughing in their face it wasn't quite literal. You bring up a very good point here. A big part of why I can't deal with these sorts of people is in what you said. I feel insulted by a grown man acting like me as a small child. I know they usually can't help it but there's this insistent feeling of "For god's sake, just act like you're even trying to be an adult you immature excuse of a human being."
@@ndoziadewole-jimenez4166 I think I hold the right to think it's odd, I'm not voicing it to them, not making fun of them, hell this is the first time I've even told someone I have thought this, so stop acting like I'm doing something wrong by voicing my thoughts in a youtube comment section

I'm an autistic person who just turned 18. When I was much younger, I would have large, constant meltdowns. Nowadays I am able to control my anger, and not yell at people. Sure, things don't always go my way, but I always make sure I'm still polite. Granted, I'm not a medical professional, but I know that you can't walk away and give up when things get tough.

@@snake239Shut up! That's not funny and its cringe.
Ehm ,some people’s autism is worse than others?Lol you can’t compare your experience with autism with someone that has higher needs
Hey yeah I was autistic and had huge meltdowns too! I was also a complete dumbass at times and still am lol.
The craziest thing is that Daniel Dae Kim was the director AND producer for the show and he decided to be the “antagonist” in the show. The only issue is they truly made Dr. Han a good character and understanding person. He had sound logic and while understanding that Dr. Murphy has Autism he knows its best to put him in a role that plays to his strengths and doesn’t have such a high risk variable like being a Surgeon. And yet people found him as the villian initially.
I’m automatically primed to react negatively to anyone yelling at Daniel Dae Kim due to his heartfelt and heroic roles on Star Trek: Voyager and LOST. I think that’s part of the meme’s appeal. The guy being yelled at is not giving some kind of evil “haha I took away your surgeon card” look but rather has a pained expression.

I think an important aspect of Autism representation is remembering it’s a spectrum. So while some works may accurately depict a specific form of autism, it therefore cannot represent other forms.
The worst possible example of this is Sia’s film, “Music”, which attempted to display ALL forms of autism, and thus represented no one but the most surface-level stereotypes.
As an autistic person myself, I’m glad that I never watched this show past the first episode.

Twitter isn't boring?
Twitter already boring outside of drama stuff.
My judgment as an allegedly neurotypical person may not be as well-informed, but I get the distinct feeling that he is a surgeon
House was such a wild show. They'd do stuff like "house we can't figure out what's wrong with them" just for house to say something wild like "have you checked for a toothpick up their butt" and that would somehow be the problem
Watching this meme escape containment from twitter has been insane
thought it'd be funny to share this with you all: in the opening part in one of the episodes of The Good Doctor, Lea Dilallo-Murphy (Shaun Murphy's wife) offers to Naughty in the shower, and Shaun instead focuses on all the negative downsides of Naughtying including a lack of balance, cleaning products clogging up the stimuli, etc. which I think perfectly represents the state of this series

To be fair, autism and hyper rationality usually go hand and hand. They are very logical thinkers, which can be a bad thing at times
What really makes this even better is that the show keeps trying to portray Dr. Han as the bad guy even though he’s handling the situation very well

And all of that was done without Dr. Han ever raising his voice once.
Bullying implies that he’d be mocking him about it or shouting at him.
honestly dr han was painted as a villain and complete jerk but bro was genuinely worried about the patients, he did nothing wrong imo
Sometimes we're good and bad
Dr. Han handled it very well. Also yes, the wellbeing of the patient is the most important. If I was a patient and saw/knew that one of their doctors had emotional outbursts, I would yeet myself to another hospital immediately
The act of transferring a doctor under you into a different department on a whim without their consent is highly illegal. I mean I get it tv drama bullshit but irl that shit would not fly at all. Whether the rep was good, bad or somewhere inbetween, I appreciate that it's resparked some needed conversation about autism and actually understanding it. It's no joke my own life was nearly ruined by the mere label of autism because of how "professionals" and the "special" education system treat autistic people (which is very fucking poorly). I won't go into more since it's very personal but it's still something that affects me even now and I've been having to omit the fact I have autism from things like job applications because of how stuff has gone in the past.

I can tell you right now, having Autism and ADHD myself, that guy would’ve been fired from his job within the first week regardless of how good of a surgeon he is. Mainly because 1. He is exhibiting very clear signs that he needs more specialized training and 2. Bosses generally do not care about people with special needs and only view us a liability. Trust me, I got fired from dishwashing in a restaurant for asking too many reasonable questions on how to work, while only being given one day a week to work part time, and 1 day before my birthday.

As a person with multiple disabilities myself, I do get insulted when people treat me like I'm totally helpless. Sometimes it insults me the same way those bullies bully my disabilities. Hell, maybe even more insulting, because those "nursing" behaviors people do to disabled people are often seen as a good thing when it's actually not.
@@coolisblue Exactly, it's less helping and more like making us feel like we're just infants
Though the savant thing is tired, it’s annoying how people (and apparently other autistic people) say the specific scene is portraying autism wrong, while it’s actually quite accurate. there’s a good amount of people that can relate to it, all the way through the whole emotional breakdown.
The most annoying part about all of this is people who say so that are not autistic themselves or are self diagnosed.
Who are the people who think autistic people can't be smart? That's wild. I can get why people get amazed every time they meet one of us who isn't an emotionally screwed up weirdo because, well, for a lot of us it's hard work not to be. But in terms of intelligence most with autism I've (knowingly) met have been higher than average I'd say.

Tldr but spoilers if you care
As a kid, He had abusive parents, his dad killed his pet rabbit. He goes and tries to take the rabbit to a doctor, meeting who is the head of the hospital in the show. Shaun and his brother ultimately decide to run away from their parents, due to his father killing the rabbit. An accident happens that ultimately ends up killing his brother. The police are contacted and try bringing shaun back to his family, but he completely refuses and ultimately the head of the hospital ends up adopting him. Shaun's brother gave him a toy surgical kit, which ultimately ends up being the reason as to why he becomes a doctor in the first place. He also blames himself for not being able to save his brother as well, becoming a surgeon to prevent this from happening again. Thus why he has a mental breakdown when he is fired, as he sees himself as a failure both to his brother and his adoptive father.
Show overall is pretty mid, but there are a few episodes that really stand out. Generally, these are the episodes are the ones where the patient ends up having a terminal illnesses, or the ones that focus on other doctors. For example, Covid overwhelms the hospital and a ton of patients end up dying due to a lack of resources, and one of the cast ending up suffering from PTSD. Even still though, these episodes pull 7-8s out of 10. Not fantastic, but isnt bad.
Even that sounds super over the top, I saw the scene of the dad killing the rabbit.
