    Ubiquiti demands access to internet in Powerbeam m2 to be WORKING. Yes WORKING. If access to internet is cut then you are unable to connect to access point via wifi.

    I host all the controllers always locally, and this is not only an issue with Ubiquity if you can NEVER use controllers in ANY cloud service.

    I know their UDM Pro and Cloud Key Gen2 require UI Account and Internet access as part of the initial setup. I have Edgerouter X, with EdgeSwitch-150W and Engenious AP. ER-X covers basics well especially for home, has robust flexible vlan and stateful firewall configuration. But also UI no longer releases updates for it other than hotfix. Also if someday it dies, I am locked out from resetting it due to lack of the console port. My next router/firewall is gonna be propably OPNsense, pfsense or Untangle loaded into a small fan-less Mini-PC.

      Yeah, it's tricky, I do like their gear and friendly UI, but I've been playing with UMD Pro and the amount of times I got stuck due to the UI breaking and getting into weird states is really not acceptable.

      Sure no problem. Did a bunch of research was going to pick up the rode go. But no stock like everything else. So grabbed some of these packs and just use the included lav mic's. www.amazon.com/dp/B08KGBQMQY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_imm_5QG2V64Q775PD2QG196F?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

    I'm gonna rip my Ubiquiti out soon, I already turned off cloud connect. It's not great gear anyway. They have no WiFi 6E products or even 2.5GBe back haul. YEAH.... Just glad I found out from you before I invested more into the ecosystem.

    Again as a home user why do you need to use a cloud service outside your domain? I have a Synology at home and another one at my parents. That suffices for me and I never use anyone else's cloud service. Some of my friends have VPN to their Synologies and they are in control of their data. As a small business I can see the need of a cloud service but in that case I would use a proven robust company. IBM, HP, etc are very large companies and they are always on the aim of hackers for a breach. At least that is my point of view on the matter. BTW I use Aruba gear as it tends to suit me better.

      Super good question, I will probably cover some of that, used them allot a while back, Routers and Switches are great, but there WiFi gear is still behind, no WiFi 6 stuff yet, not even an ETA which is worrying as at this point new installs should really be WiFi6

      @@JenxTech Engenius looks promising, but seems to be available only through the channel and is somewhat more expensive. Also if you look at Engenius APs they tend not to benchmark as well as the Unifi APs. I never use a vendors cloud platform and host the Unifi controller internally only.

      Recommend checking out TP-Link Omada SDN equipment which has a full range from hardware or software based controllers, routers, switches to indoor/outdoor access points - www.tp-link.com/us/omada-sdn. Very similar UI to Ubiquiti but also can have majority of their devices operate in a standalone mode too without cloud access but then also lose some of the benefits too. Price wise more cost effective in most aspects compared to Ubiquiti, Meraki, Engenius, etc. Availability in the US was a little challenging at times but think it is getting better. Chris from Crosstalk Solutions - ua-cam.com/video/44gYQcHlCFk/v-deo.html - and Tom from Lawrence Systems - ua-cam.com/video/VJkV4qlzPsU/v-deo.html - have reviews out recently as well.

      @@johnmaclaren422 Thanks, been looking at those, but the 8 port 2.5tb model is hard to find. Engenius does seem as pricey or moser than Ubiquiti. I may just go with Netgear as they halve a true 8 port Mulitgig switch and then I can get a standard 24 port 1gb switch u til there are better options for high density 2.5gb switches.

    I only have a simple setup, Dream Machine and WiFi 6 Lite AP. But I've found it a right pain to setup, it doesn't hand off properly, WiFi signal is weak, and devices keep changing which AP they are on and between 2.4 or 5GHZ. I've asked on the Ubiquiti forum and others for assistance and all auto config systems are off, everything is manually set. But for me it's not been a great experience. I've actually gone back to Google WiFi for the moment to see how it goes as it's had a lot of updates now. It seems Ubiquit are obsessed with stuffing more features in, but ignoring the broken bits? I remember I had to install a beta firmware version when I first setup just to get IPV6 over PPPOE to work!

    • @JenxTech
      @JenxTech  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah I haven't tried there WiFi 6 AP but their new releases are always buggy for a while. I would potentially do a clean setup with all the gear fully upgraded and see how that goes. On the flip side if you want to sell your gear you'll sell it in no time!

    • @marksapollo
      @marksapollo 3 роки тому

      @@JenxTech I'll see how I go. I may try a clean sweep setup but will have to find the time to do that. It does seem to hold it's value though. I think my main issue is I have the DM in the hallway and then the AP Lite in the landing above it but on the wall. They seem to interfere a lot with each other. If I move the AP I have to really think about how to run a cable to it. But for now I can't set the wireless radios to full power. But it may be too much hassle for me.

    With cloud turned off, and not using protect, what risk does a home user of UI really have? I mean, if there were an exploit found from the source code, would a hacker spend the time on a home user or an enterprise? Could a netgear router actually be more secure for a home user?

    • @JenxTech
      @JenxTech  3 роки тому

      All fair points which is why I said really anyone that is a larger than a school should be concerned. My main issue is that they still haven't addressed these issues head on. So for example right now if there are exploits and someone has source code, writing a worm or virus that can spread would be much easier. Again you're right for home users not a big problem, but for larger orgs that's just not acceptable.

      @@JenxTech Hopefully they are just playing quiet while they do a full audit and patch things in the background. I would hope that is the case but without transparency who really knows. It's not comforting to know the source code is out there somewhere.

      @@withcookies yeah I hope so too. But I've worked at enough tech companies to know that if they haven't admitted it, the chance of major change coming is small. Side bar, CEO is ex Apple. This is their play book. Pretend nothing happens and move on and if they do change something it's silent and they'll never admit it. That might be fine for consumer space but not in Enterprise.
