@@Dragonpuncher123 I think is because Gollum is one of the deeper character in TLOTR, and he has been written (and adapted by PJ) beautifully. In a dimension where the line between good and evil couldn't be more stark, Gollum is one of the very few characters that shows ambivalence, and as a result it appears weirdly relatable. When he does something bad and as readers/spectators we are about to make our mind to hate him for good, something else always happens to bring us right back in the muddled zone: He should die for creeping on us, but Gandalf tells us not to be so hasty in our judgements; He's revolting, but we get told he was just like us before the ring corrupted him; He's leading us into a trap, but without him we wouldn't have been able to reach our destination in the first place. And in the very end the mission is a success literally because of him. Gollum is a masterpiece of ambiguity, and I think his nature speaks to us of a universal level, regardless our background, race, and culture.

I think most people appreciate a courageous woman who's willing to fight and sacrifice for others regardless of what different traditions have had to say about gender roles through the centuries. After all, the character of Eowyn was written by a WW1 vet starting in 1937 and Western cultures had very different ideas about the roles of women then compared to now, but she was written even MORE badass in the books than she was in the movies. Not a perfect character, but very real and understandable and absolutely badass when it came time to take care of business.
