    Guys, i did some digging and apparently Brandon started playing guitar at the age of 10, and has been playing for 17 years. But the source of the 17 years might not be up to date tho. So i'm guessing he's in his late 20's.
    (For those of you wondering, i found out he started playing at the age of 10 on his website, and in his 14 day guitar player website he said that he's been playing for 17 years in a video. It's a video, that's why i thought it may not be up to date.)

    Any advice anyone here for targeting chord tones. When soloing over something for the first few times doing all these things and creating nice melodies is ok but hitting the chord tones is not. I have to have my rhythm player call out the chords to me as he plays them so I know where to stop.

    Wtf is a chord tone? :(

    • @jrs2080
      @jrs2080 Рік тому +91

      The notes that make a chord. For example, a C major chord is made up by the notes C, E and G. C being the root note, E being the major third and G being the perfect 5th. These are the chord tones, also called a major triad. For a minor triad you'll just have to flatten the major third to a minor third. This is a good place to start, once you're comfortable you can also use the 7th, 9th, 11th and 13th to make it more interesting.

    • @dangallagher6176
      @dangallagher6176 Рік тому +25

      @@jrs2080 ohh nice! So would that basically involve knowing all C's E's and G's across the fretboard, in order to solo in the key of C?

      @@dangallagher6176 Not actually, if you're playing in the C major scale or any relative scale, you just have to focus on the C major chord tones. Something I do is ending phrases on the chord tones to avoid screwing up the harmony.

    • @jrs2080
      @jrs2080 Рік тому +6

      @@dangallagher6176 yeah you should learn the whole fret board and for a really basic improvisation, yeah you can use just the chord triads which is very good to practice and get the hang of. Then start adding the 7th, 9th(2nd in the next octave) 11th(4th) and 13th(6th). These tones are the notes you want to target at the start and end of phrases.This will help you see arpeggios more rather than scale shapes. Also this is a general rule of thumb you can do anything as long as you like the sound of it. If learning the notes on fret board seems a bit hard, don't worry it will all sink in eventually and you'll know all the notes on the board

    i have one of those problems, when i decide to play any scale i always start from the first position and while i am playing i count up/down the scalt to move to other positions, i mean if i want to play for example d minor pentatonic i can't start like from the third position immediately no i need to start with the first position. what should i do?

    • @DSD2150
      @DSD2150 10 місяців тому

      Start from the third position.

    • @billbo9761
      @billbo9761 7 місяців тому

      You could memorize where the roots are in each pattern..... I think the better way is to learn the caged chord shape for each position. There's a minor and major chord for each of the 5 pentatonic scale shapes e.g. in A minor there are 5 A minor chords you could play and 5 C major chords (C major being the relative of A minor). You can then use the roots and other notes in the chord to play the underlying scale shape.
