VIGO Spain - Portugal

After departing the north-western tip of Spain, I pointed the Superduke south towards the city of Vigo, close to the Portuguese border. The 8th stop of this years escape on the mighty Superduke. For this part of the journey, I was accompanied (in his car) by an old friend of some 52+ years. We were on our way to Portugal and decided Vigo would be ideal for a brief stopover. Using Airbnb, I booked a very affordable 2 room chalet to share. High on a hillside overlooking the North Atlantic Ocean and the city with an estimated population of about 420,000 inhabitants. Vigo is one of the biggest, most important fishing ports in Europe and known for its freezing and canning industry. It was attacked several times by the Vikings, the Turks and by English admiral Sir Francis Drake in 1585 and 1589. The name Vigo is boy's name meaning "settlement". Vigo is both an Italian and Spanish surname and a Scandinavian first name. As a place name, it's found in Spain, Italy, England - and Indiana. Vigo the Carpathian is the fictional villain of Ghostbusters II.
