I can't seem to barre on the first fret. The rest of the fretboard is no problem. Is this common or is my nut too high or something? Any advice is appreciated.
One of my ukes is more difficult to bar the first fret; the other one is easy. One day when I will consider upgrading to a more professional uke, I know that I will have to test the playability in this respect, too.

That’s a matter of personal preference, see how you like them. I personally prefer fluorocarbons.
