I have an old DIY book with instructions for a box you would open with a 4.5 volt lantern battery. It looked like a box with a bunch of nails hammered all the way in, two of which were connected to an electromagnetic coil inside. When you touch the contacts of the battery to the right pair of nails the coil pulls out the rod holding the box shut.
Hmm. Using electronic tech in my book is a lot like cheating. 'Anything' would be possible. It kinda defeats the natural search for a solution. Though I admit the GPS one is rather ingenious. But I bet 'one' could make one that could only be opened if it were touched with a tuning-fork or placed on a piano playing a C, without using modern tech.
I love Tim! He seems like he really appreciates the childlike wonder and joy we all too often lose as we become adults. I'd love to sit down with him and just talk about what he's seen throughout his life
So far away from your family, from your friends, from everything you ever loved. But, for some reason you like it here. You feel something you can't quite put your finger on. Think about it for a second and maybe the word will come to you...... nostalgia.
These boxes are absolutely amazing! I'm in the business and take great pleasure from repairing very old fountain pens and have come across several boxes like these in my antique store travels, but have never ventured far enough out of my comfort zone to actually buy one! Now, after watching these two videos, I feel like a fool and will be heading out tomorrow to see what I can find! Tim, if you ever read these comments, please know that I find your knowledge and enthusiasm for these objects to be a national treasure and sincerely hope your passion continues long into the future!
I wish I had a recreation of pandoras box from Professor Layton. With the scret compartment you open by rotating two people on the base sliding the sun, and blowing into a little hole. "when you and I meet when the sun rises and then the wind blows you will know my heart" something like that.
I would love to have the first box that used a sand timer that you sat on it's side for a certain amount of time for if I ever propose to my girlfriend, I would hide the ring and hopefully the ring box inside it and tell her to try and work out how to open it and that if she gets it open she can keep what's inside and I would leave her with it for however long she takes to work it out but no longer than a few days then I would give her a hint
I know this is a very old video, but I have been looking since soon after this video came out where I could find that magnetic match box. I have tries everything, and searching what is written on the box comes up with either other boxes or completely irrelevant things. Would anyone else know where to get one of these?
this would be cool to have a wedding ring put inside with a little note saying "will you marry me" or something like that. Get quite a surprise when you finally open it.
I got a tool to open them all. I apply the same tool I used to make a square peg fit into round hole. It will get into most cars and homes as well. Yelling Bam, Bam, Bam, seems to help?
You probably want a bigger box for that.. How about a big smoke detector that unlocks when smoke is blown through it. Using an arduino nano would do- unlock via a servo instead of the screws. In case of a fire, stand under it, recieve weed... In case of a much needed spliff, start a fire. Empty solder tubes are great hideouts for joints btw...
it really bothers me that he did not put that donut back together as i look several times if it has a dove tail cut one side the other side would not go in, it really bothers me , HOW???
0:13 Sand Timer Box: A trick box with a sand timer inside to make it open the lid. 1:25 Karakuri Match Box: A faux matchbox with fake matches to open the lid. 1:52 Barrel Box: Unscrew the stick to open the barrel box. 2:29 Magnetic Orientation Box: Inside, there is a magnet to help it open when pointed to a certain direction. 3:15 Blowing Puzzle Box: A doughnut-shaped box to blow with to unlock it.
I am very much interested in building the one with the compass. I couldn't seem to find much on this on Google. Do you think you could send me some pictures of the mechanism and the box. Thanks
Tim, I believe you would love Geocaching. It is basically like a scavenger hunt across the globe. Look it up. Some are puzzles and right up your alley as we say in the states.😀
Ive heard of these gps-based boxes, you can buy them for the sake of giving a special gift. When pressing a button on the lid, a screen will display the distance to the target, and the receiver then have to figure out where he is supposed to take the box for it to open. Thus you give the gift of an object and a journey all at once.
have you seen Thinkgeek's Magic IQ Gift Boxes? the small one is like the special grip box, but the large one has two compartments and another secret security measure. I couldn't open it for months until I stumbled on, just by chance, another youtube video showing how to open it.
the idea that you have about making a box open on voice recognition is quite easy to be made this days :) mini android tv pc + mic + electromagnetic lock + simple mosfet driver all in all around $100USD it will be able to be controlled by an android phone too :)
he was part of some tv program now hes retired :D But if he had a show i would watch it, it's very interesting, to kids for obvious reasons and adults who are still child at heart.
It would include a GPS locator like the kind in cell phones and navigation systems. One has to be at the "home position" in order for the electronics to allow you to open it.
I am questioning whether or not this guy is narrating these videos only because of his voice and looks... there's some things he says that doesn't exactly scream "PhD" to me
well it only locks one side so if the match was in the other end it wouldn't be locked and both sides would be sliding open. He didn't lock it before moving it to the side
2:29 does anyone know where can i get one of those magnetic orientation boxes or how can i build one? Does anyone know the history behind them? I couldn't find nothing about them on google
72 people seem agree with Eagles, just because he/she is a stoner doesn't mean he/she doesn't still have toys stoners probably enjoy toys more than non-stoners.
What a lovely idea

***** Tim is love. Tim is life.
I wish he would do a longer segment on these trick boxes. They really do tickle my fancy.
It's worth looking on Google and YT. I saw a massive desk one time, with all sorts of secret compartments in it............on YT I think
i love his voice and way of expressing himself
It's so soothing
Yes, Tim +Grand illusions should do ASMR videos!
lmfaoooo I know , he reminds of that one actor Michael Cain is his name I believe
skylight daylight-
He must be the bob Ross of puzzles
The compass box is ingenious
S s
I may have to get one.
He should have a voice activated box that opens to "Heh."
Or "extrodnary" or "what a lovely idea!"
l『」l
"You could hide your weed in there!"
+Travis Carson (BetaBerserker) "Not a lot of people know this, but"
I love Tim! He seems like he really appreciates the childlike wonder and joy we all too often lose as we become adults. I'd love to sit down with him and just talk about what he's seen throughout his life
Absolutely fascinating stuff! Where in the hell have I been all of my life?
I'm really addicted to your channel, and the weird thing is I don't know why...

I'd love this guy to do audiobooks. Not necessarily of this sort of stuff, just in general.
who is this guy? and how did i find him?
Tim & destiny

Have you bought a puzzle box since?
Nothing would make me happier than to think of an idea, and hear Tim say “what a lovely idea!” When he hears it
3:31 hehe

+Graz Fraz Oh my...
+Graz Fraz "When I blow hard"
I wish I had a recreation of pandoras box from Professor Layton. With the scret compartment you open by rotating two people on the base sliding the sun, and blowing into a little hole. "when you and I meet when the sun rises and then the wind blows you will know my heart" something like that.
I love that box, it was so beautiful, I really wanted one
Tim is the coolest guy ever

I see that you're a furry... nasty
"I don't think any other puzzle has been made of this sort" all I can think is Uhh don't they use that exact puzzle on prescription bottles?
They don't expect to do the same thing with lock boxes.
Please don't make me collect these, I have enough hobbies as it is!
I remember when he was henders007
He still
I know this is a very old video, but I have been looking since soon after this video came out where I could find that magnetic match box. I have tries everything, and searching what is written on the box comes up with either other boxes or completely irrelevant things. Would anyone else know where to get one of these?
the magnetic orientation one really impressed me!
"And you can put your weed in there"...
I am officially in love with your content, you are amazing
the barrel one is one of the most outstanding boxes i have ever seen,! what a delightful design
WHAT A LOVELY IDEA
this would be cool to have a wedding ring put inside with a little note saying "will you marry me" or something like that.
Get quite a surprise when you finally open it.
Mavu-in Kirugoa Unless the never figure it out.
Zakkerly what I thought. BAD idea Mavu, it could ruin your life
If they can't figure it out, then they're not The One™ for you.
You might say he has a magnetic personality.
Love the voice-activated box. If you keep a packet of cullinary seeds in the box - you could say: "Open sesame," .... ".........seeeeeds"
After watching so many videos, I've finally realised that his accent reminds me of Stephen Fry.
I got a tool to open them all. I apply the same tool I used to make a square peg fit into round hole. It will get into most cars and homes as well. Yelling Bam, Bam, Bam, seems to help?
This guy is brilliant!
In the second one, If you end up putting the tools on second drawer and close it.. the box is forever locked..
Unless you can get a new magnet...
animationguy1000
or obviously, a hammer
no, because the magnet is still at that side
I want a box that opens when a sensor detects methane being blown through. Fart to unlock, perfect for wedding rings.
This guy makes me think of if Vsauce got more chill, older, and developed a habit of collecting little things
this shit is crazy but i have this one box that needs a key to be opened
2:38 Try getting that one past the TSA.
I need one of those to hide my weed.
Police, or GF stealing it??
You probably want a bigger box for that.. How about a big smoke detector that unlocks when smoke is blown through it. Using an arduino nano would do- unlock via a servo instead of the screws.
In case of a fire, stand under it, recieve weed... In case of a much needed spliff, start a fire. Empty solder tubes are great hideouts for joints btw...
just say friend and it'll open?
sacrifice box
kill a bug to open
What possible reason could 46 people have for down voting this?
They are robbers who found a bank that used all the boxes to keep cash but they only found this video after they were arrested
ahahahah!
That's PROPERLY funny M8
it really is I love this comment I hope more people reply to this so i can read it again in my notifications, like I am right now :)
@@PandaJungle Happy to oblige.
It is so nice and refreshing that these wonderful videos are appreciated...count me in.
these are incredible. i feel like they belong in the world of Zelda or something
".... and this delightful little item is a lament configuration... heh, wow"
he's like a grandfather figure
Was thinking about that...What a lovely idea!
Most interesting, bravo good sir.......bravo
This guy. Pretty sure that last bit was sarcasm. Hard to tell. You know. CUZ HE SO SRS.
I like that Tim was prepared with a stronger magnet in case the match-stick box failed to perform. That's planning ahead.
One might suppose that he has something to hide... in a box.
hope no demons getcha. take it easy with those puzzle boxes
it really bothers me that he did not put that donut back together as i look several times if it has a dove tail cut one side the other side would not go in, it really bothers me , HOW???
whre can i buy boxes like that???

Ahh, I have a very unique way of opening these!
*Pulls out hammer* Oh wait, that woulden't be opening it, would it?
*Pulls out Crowbar* Much better!
I am very much interested in building the one with the compass. I couldn't seem to find much on this on Google. Do you think you could send me some pictures of the mechanism and the box.

where can I buy such a box?
ebay.
When Tim was opening the first box all I could think was "sand from the Sahara"
This guy is like the amazing reptile scientist dad from A Series of Unfortunate Events
I want a complicated puzzle box that when you open it, there is just more puzzle boxes.
Ive heard of these gps-based boxes, you can buy them for the sake of giving a special gift. could that first one hide smell?
4.20 box ?
Fascinating. i wonder how many of these "toy" mechanisms have rich historical significance?

i am watching a video about boxes. god what happened to my life....
Tim needs to be the new spokesman for Dos Equis because he is truly the most interesting man in the world.
he was part of some tv program now hes retired :D But if he had a show i would watch it, it's very interesting, to kids for obvious reasons and adults who are still child at heart.

"voice recognision box" Dude... cmon, be a bit original at least...
Will you do another video and remove the lid of the first box and show what happens inside the box when it in placed on either side? Thanks!
Wow I'd love to see that compass mechanism explained in full
Does anyone know where I could buy a magnetic orientation box?
A box that will only open when nobody is present or cameras recording.
Thank u mister u made me smarter. made my brain to think out of the box.. all the best :)
I have a nice maple box where you have to flip it upside down and then move a little piece and it opens😄
Anyone notice his slight resemblance to Jack Nicholson?
I hope you realize how ridiculous you sound going into the UA-cam comments and expecting them all to be PG and on topic.
ewww TV is so 90s .. just go to his website and buy some stuff so he can do more videos and tell him to do a full playlist
I might have a go at making the pneumatic one. (once ive found my camera charger)
I used to have a voice activated box. It was only a toy though, not as nice as these boxes XD
Amazing! Just think if you combine all the different methods of opening the box.. The possibilities are endless.
It's my day off work and I'm watching a man blow into a wooden donut
