It does seem like the story takes place over the span of more than 20 years, but I am not sure why. Other than Magda mentioning the time passed, we don't know what took place over most of that time. It definitely has some horror vibes without having any horror elements. I will definitely be picking up that other novel of hers.

I picked that book up on a whim about 3 months ago for $1 simply because of it being an NYRB edition. So I was excited to see y'all doing a buddy read.

As a native Hungarian speaker, I just want to let you know you don’t pronounce the “z”. It is pronounced like sa-bo.

Fascinating book - i'll have to read this. Nyrb classics is phenomenal. I'm reading Naked Earth by Eileen Chang and Robert Walser's Berlin Stories and am very impressed.
Check out Naked Earth when you can, it's a pretty great diagnosis of Mao era China and the language it employs to quell resistance/love and cover up mistakes. Very Orwellian angle with the language of fascism plus a Jane Austin-esque love story. Quite impressive.
    Thanks for the great content!

Sounds like a lot of great tension building in this one! If you and Pae had a hard time wrapping your minds around what was going on, it’s gotta be good! 🤣😎

    This sounds FACINATING
No wonder Pae liked it. The protagonists may just be two sides ofnthe same person 😁

There is no mention of the main character name in the novel.

Actually, there is. The only time writer's name is mentioned is at the late stage of the book, in chapter "Amnesia", when Emerence herself calls her 'Magdushka', right after Magda lies about the house and the cats. Magda then tells us only her parents used to call her Magdushka, and is being strucked with mix feelings of shame, hope, guilt and relief at that moment.
