Gangle is a brilliant representation of using masking as a coping mechanism for depression. The idea of having someone tell you they prefer it when you are hurting emotionally rather than when you are trying to be cheerful and feeling good about yourself. It feels so good to see the smile through the tears showing she finally found true happiness in the circus. I really love her character so much more after that episode.
This episode is dark, that last scene where Gangle gets hit by the truck, is what does it for me. When someone with severe depression is suddenly happy, it’s often a sign that they’re committing to suicide. She doesn’t trip onto the road, she basically does a trust fall before realizing what she’s doing, it’s actually really tragic…
That was my first thought, though I'm not sure if I'm thinking "mental breakdown causing her to be reckless and stumbling into the road" or "deep relief at being 'free' from everything and semi-intentionally running to the road"
No way I did not notice that detail I always miss these things despite being obvious What I did catch on is that Gangle is a representation of Depression, but even knowing that while watching this, it never connected some details for me. Thank you, wtf. This series never ceases to amaze me
My favorite TADC episode so far, that was nearly a masterpiece. Felt extremely real, and relatable in a sense. And characters were great, almost every single one (even Ragatha and Jax, opening up her feelings for once, and admitting that she doesn't like the majority of TADC cast or feels out of place around them, except Kinger, maybe, and Jax kind of accepting the circumstances and opening up to Pomni a little bit). The Gangle character moments were definitely the highlight.
Somebody on another thread said "suicidal ideation", where yeah, the person stops caring about their own safety because if they die from neglecting themselves, what of it?
It’s based on an Isikai where when someone sacrifices themselves to save someone else in an anime and gets reborn into a magical world. In this case it would be Gangle being reborn into the circus!
The part where Ragatha vents about tea parties and dancing lessons is a reference to the Raggedy Ann and Andy movie. Which is the inspiration for her, Jax, and the show itself.
Pomni wasn't able to talk to Gangle much directly, because Gangle instinctively masks when she's overwhelmed and doesn't want to show her true feelings, but Pomni choosing to close the shift for her did wonders. Probably even more than Pomni will ever know. This episode shows something really important: the little kindnesses you do for people can mean a lot. Not everyone can or will open up to you, but doing nice things for them can mean more than you realize. I like how this show offers real, multiple ways to support someone.
As someone who’s like Gangle, I have a friend who did something that might’ve not seemed like a big deal to most, but for me, it saved me from self destructing that night
I honestly think if Pomni didn't show that bit of kindness, Gangle would've abstracted before she even had the chance to close the restaurant. The music and the distortion really exemplified how she was on the brink. Having multiple people who you see as friends either highlight how inadequate you are, or feeling like your efforts of being "normal" have irreparably damaged your relationships would make you feel all alone and isolated, which I think is one of the biggest triggers for abstraction. Bless Pomni for being a truly kind friend. 😊
Ragatha being completely incapable of saying a single even minorly negative thing without being wasted, to the point that Gangle comments that it's hard to tell when she's being sincere or when she's just forcing herself, is far too real lol
The worst part for me is that, even when "drunk", Ragatha isn't unkind in the slightest. And the few times she says something mean, she immediately backtracks EVEN WHILE WASTED. Ragatha is *actually* kind, not someone who puts up a front purely to hide how bad of a person she is. The worst part about being chronically depressed like Gangle is (speaking from experience) is not the lack of kindness, but the lack of knowledge. Simply being unsure if a friend is nice because they truly care, or are being nice only to make you feel better is really hard to deal with. For all Gangle knows, Ragatha's genuine kindness could just be her "not wanting to deal with Gangle's depressive episodes right now", and that lack of surety can make you spiral into being untrusting of even close friends' intentions. 😞😞😞
I love the foreshadowing when Gangle talks about drawing manga being an unrealistic dream and then in the last seen, you see her drawing it. She was projecting her frustrations.
I mean, there were only two options where that would go. It was either, that was Jax’s dream, or it was Gangles. It was pretty obvious where it would go
I know a user for another channel that just leaves a comment entry open while they watch a video, writes all their comments there with timestamps as they go, and then posts the whole thing in a single comment when the video's over. That might be better than making a bunch of separate comments? Less effort too, and while it's not as much an issue for these since it's pretty obvious for all of them, it also makes it nice for knowing exactly what you might be responding to when it's not immediately clear.

This episode honestly felt far more "miserable" and "sinister" compared to the others, I guess this just shows why Caine prefers to make the more crazy-showstopping adventures.
gangle is basically like hiding depression...she wears the mask and acts like everything is fine, and when she takes it off, she shows her real feelings, and she ALMOST abstracted before pomni stopped her. jax and (high) ragatha say it was easier to deal with gangle when she was sad. peak episode.
and also her comedy mask is apparently just like this, the only thing is that it breaks easily so she doesn’t have to hide her emotions like in this episode
Why do people not understand Ragatha never said "it is easier to deal with gangle", she said the comedy mask was more annoying. Like imagine you are relaxing and someone is all happy or trying hard near you, it is annoying, but you never say it or think you are being a dummy. Plus I still believe Jax and Ragatha have a point, in that Gangle wasn't themselves, but a fake cheery self. Faking or just pushing a mask to look normal, which is harmful and can get to people.
@@allie_ice It is more people pushing she said something, which...is wrong. It is pushing away a sad thing people ignore, that nice people or caring people feel anger or annoyance. I know many who, the kindest people ever, ever speak up, they get attacked or downplayed or feel betrayed. Like finding someone else's happiness annoying is normal, and not some "evil selfish" thing. It's a human reaction that, yes is wrong, but also is natural.
The fact that as soon as Jax leaves the building he just, stops smiling really indicates more about his character, like as soon as he’s alone he just gives up on the “smile all the time” thing, I can’t wait to learn more about him.
Hearing "I prefer you when you're sad" hit like a truck, poor Gangle!! I've been there. Also, the whole horses, tea party, dancing lessons thing... Ragatha strikes me as rich girl who maybe was raised to live under strict expectations. Hence, people pleasing tendencies.
My mom's like her. She had horses she adored, and has an emotionally abusive now rich, now ex- husband. Spent years labeling her things she wasn't and kept putting the blame onto her, she raised the kids wrong, she did everything wrong and he had to show her how to properly do it. And she just excused his actions while bending over backwards to make everyone else happy thinking other people's happiness was her own... Right until the jerk shattered her whole world and she had to address all the issues all at once with interest.
It’s really interesting that Pomni has become a bit of a shining light in the darkness that is the Digital Circus. Even if it didn’t last long, she brought hope to Gumigoo that he did matter. She gave Kinger a moment where he was the most coherent he’s been in the entire series. And in the most recent episode, she likely saved Gangle from abstracting.
@Pigcat45 I missed it in my first watch because I was so focused on pomni and gummigoo, and it was dropped so causally my mind didn't flag it. That said I also missed the fact cain sticking his tongue out was why bubbles tongue went in, and when he pushed it back in then bubbles tongue went back out. I just noticed what bubble was doing and Caine saying it was weird. 😅
In this episode you can clearly see the difference in the character relationships based on how Gangle treats her "employees". She gave Jax a hard time (for obvious reasons), she at least attempted to be helpful with Ragatha when she offered to lend a hand while Ragatha was on the sauce. Since Zooble was actually doing their job Gangle didn't have anything against them and relied on them when she was struggling. When it came to Pomni she was initially frustrated with her since she wasn't doing her job and was stalking the gummy gator, however later on she was at least willing to open up a little bit to Pomni about some of her feelings before she ultimately decided to put on both her literal and her figurative masks back on so she could go back to work. Ultimately Gangle at least tried to be supportive and helpful to those she considered her "friends" and was more aggressive and unreasonable with Jax who has been (presumably) picking on her for multiple years now.
Gummigoo showing up again and not recognizing Pomni was such a gut punch. Her first true friend in this world, and he technically never met her. Tragic.
I don’t know, at the end when he and his friends are leaving Spudsy’s and Pomni comes to say bye, Gummigoo looks a little sad. That leads me to believe that Gummigoo did actually remember her but didn’t say anything in fear of Caine possibly erasing him from existence or he didn’t exactly remember her but something lingered in his head that she might be familiar to him. Again I don’t know but that look he gave her was concerning.
"I like you better when you're sad/depressed" is one of the most fucked up things you can say to a person. It's literally saying, "I don't care about you, I just put up with you, and that's easier for me when you're quiet." Jfc. PSA: If you ever get the urge to say that to someone, instead consider replacing it with "Let's not see each other anymore, because I don't care about you at all." It still hurts, but at least it's not fake, and it'll prevent more pain in the future.

It is sad many can see the happy mask is a mask to hide Gangle's depression, be it antidepressents or a mask to hide her depression, yet people get annoyed people want Gangle to not hide behind the mask with Jax and Ragatha. Both did it in ways that hurt, though in Ragatha's was more just carelessly saying something from being on the sauce, both do have a point or a honest feeling that the happy mask, isn't their friend or truly them.
@@jjmara01 People mask for different reasons, but one reason is that pretending to be happy is closer to actually being happy. In fact, I once had a therapist who explicitly told me I should mask because "if you do it long enough, eventually you'll start believing it." So this idea that it's good to say the mask "isn't you" and is a bad thing... is still messed up. The idea that the "real you" is a broken, depressed creature, and anything possibly happy is fake and bad... That's awful. It reminds me of the people who say things like "I don't ever want my mental illness to be cured, because there's nothing to cure, because this is just who I am!" No... it doesn't have to be, and it's debilitating, and acting like any other way of living, thinking, or feeling is inherently bad because it's "not really you" is just painful.

I dont know if anyone has said this but what i remember from health class and my own medication, antidepressants is suppose to help getting your energy and receive the proper serotonin levels. One of the side effects of it is having....thoughts of being gone, as the medication is now giving enough energy to go through with it (i was warned about it when i started the treatment). The job, masking, and being told people like you better when you're depressed, it can definitely push someone too far. I dont believe it was an accident, one of the signs of making the choice to end it is feeling happiness and a sense of relief.

She didn't throw herself to the road, though? She tripped while spinning around. That's why she has that moment of shock when she realizes she's falling.
Yeah it is kind of odd how quite a few reactors think she is actually happy there when it is pretty clear she is on the verge of breaking and throws herself into oncoming traffic.

I think there were many things for Jax. This adventure is boring and monotonous, and "normal" is one of the big details. Then add that the person he loves to torment the most who's as submissive as a doormat is in charge of the adventure, and would actually torture him back in return shook him.
Its nice, while Jax has had to suffer from his actions before usually it was because something just didn't work out. This was the first time as far as we know he was full on "punished" for his bs. Basically, the bully finally got "bullied"
It's a powerful reminder for Jax most likely that in his previous world he was a loser who had to answer to a shift manager at a dead-end job, but in the Digital Circus at least his life is more interesting and he can pretend to be the main character of his own imagination with actual power and agency. Working at a fast food restaurant reminded him too much of the real world where he did not enjoy things at all, when he went to his car after his shift and just buried his head in the steering wheel I felt that after getting off a hard shift at work on a visceral level.
Easter egg: The scene where Jax is undergoing re-training, when the mask flashes on screen and music is playing, is a reference to "Halloween III: Season of the Witch."
Something interesting I noticed was that Cain gave everyone (except Kinger who wasn't there) a B+ so he didn't have to 'punish' anyone. That's why I think he's either incapable of, or just genuinly doesn't want to cause them intentional harm.
Caine would have punished anybody that Gangle threw under the bus. She could've chosen literally anybody at work (probably except Zooble who was the best employee) if she wanted to be a bad supervisor and blame her underlings for failure. If she chose Jax out of spite Jax would've been punished, but the fact that he was pretty civil and even concerned about Ragatha and Pomni towards the end of his shift probably prevented that from happening.
The whole scene where gangle threw her mask just really unsettled me- even before I knew what happened at the end of it. I don’t fully know why, the music, the lighting, the sudden change in everything just gave me chills.

This was another episode sequence that tried to fool us as viewers to feel hopefull and happy about the "character development", however this resolved nothing, gangles joy in this is temporary and very short, i actually felt better once the twist of that scene happened, because i wouldve hated the message this wouldve told if gangle joyously ran into the sunset because hurray she ended the shift early... this episode will stick with me for a looong time
As a person with depression, there are times where I feel genuine happiness, but those moments don’t last that long. I’m happy they didn’t make it where she was suddenly happy and was never depressed again
I kinda couldn’t help but read a lot into it the first time I saw it because my mind jumped to how I was when I was at my lowest point in life. A sudden feeling of freedom because you knew “it would all be okay soon.” If you kinda get what I mean… but again I’m probably reading too much into it. It looked like it was an accident

@@mweeee She might have done it in the heat of the moment, but fully realized what she did after she was right in front of the truck. That's a common theme with survivors of suicide, where they change their minds after the damage has already been done.
Did everyone just forget the concept of abstraction or did everyone just assume that Gangle has plot armor against abstraction, because that moment after Zooble and Ragatha left genuinely left me scared if she would abstract or not, Thank you Pomni for saving the day!!
I know everyone wants Gummigoo to remember, but given he is just an npc, it's fairly likely this is not even the same Gummigoo that Pomni previously interacted with. He'd merely be a copy and paste of the default npc asset.
From what I could formulate, Gangle is meant to represent people who mask their depression and frustrations. People who strive for more then their current circumstances, which is what the ending scene was, Gangle wanting to escape her mundane life
So about the Jax scene at the end when his shift is over and he leaves I think that people are reading way too much into it (Not u tho miss gurl!) He wasn't really trying to hide the fact that he was miserable with a smile Because he didn't care to do it erlier in the episode (after the whole gangle video thing) He wasn't annoying anybody like throwing ragatha into the fryer He wasn't trying to appear all unbothered He even had a genuine interaction with Pomni So i think that Jax thought "Oh after i go outside and finish my shift, the adventure is gonna be over" and he was disappointed that it didn't (But i do agree with the notion that Jax is putting up a sort of front or a facade and hiding his true feelings. I just think that, that scene wasn't it)
Jax is always having fun in the adventures and escaping reality however he wants. This 'adventure' was literally a big dose of irl reality, where he had to work a tedious mundane job (he was always watching the clock and clocked-out immediately when his shift was over). Being forced to work a regular job is the exact opposite of escaping reality and living a life of complete hedonism, so it was the worst nightmare for Jax. Ironically, he's only civil to Pomni when he's forced to be caged in the real world, the same way most co-workers are fake nice to other co-workers (just so they don't get HR department involved and lose their jobs or their source of income, or etc.)
Honestly I like how the metaphors of medication masking and the realities of how customer services jobs were displayed here. Especially with each character besides Zooble showing what happens when their own masks break: Ragatha when “drunk” is very loose lips and unfiltered with her thoughts, Jax when pressured to obey things just wears himself out so quickly that he’s just exhausted, Pomni is kind of the opposite since she’s putting on a mask of trying to be composed, and then Gangle herself just being like forcing herself into a position she forgot how much she hated despite thinking the control of the job would keep her grounded
While working at the restaurant she used to work at, she had to put on a fake happy persona like this episode. Her leaving early symbolizes her leaving her job. When she left her job she was able to get rid of the persona or the ‘mask’. Her getting hit by a truck symbolizes going into the circus. She worked fast food and put on a fake face, she left and became happy, the second she became happy she got sent to the circus, where she wasn’t happy anymore
It's Goose's favorite number, and the number 57 has a lot of different meanings including Biblical and Angel Number meanings. Though I don't believe the Biblical and Angel number meanings are relevant to the show.

I think the “manic mask” is a metaphor for antidepressants, because we see how the mask initially really helps Gangle in feeling happy and energetic, with the effects of the mask deteriorating towards the end. At the end of the episode we see Gangle throw away the mask (i.e. throwing away her meds) and going cold turkey. Despite going cold turkey, even that has consequences as we see her running into oncoming traffic.
ragatha is not as nice as she seems. i dont quite remember, but i think in the first episode or pilot it was mentioned how she fake laughed at kofmo's (member we saw abstract) jokes. she just seems to people please like you said, being her friend may be a bit difficult because she is usually unable to tell how she actually feels (unless you are jax)

All of the indie shows I’ve watched I have only found enjoyment in watching them, but they have never managed to end up in my top 5 favorite shows. I’m not sure how but the day I watched the premiere for The Amazing Digital Circus, it managed to hop into my top 5 favorite animated shows.
My fan therory is that: +Jax is the first ever person to join the Circus (hence the 001 on his liscenese plate), a guinea pig. Most likely worked a low end job and got "recruited to try a new headset". His life most likely was terrible, and now in a "better" space, he is a bit more wild and tries to do things that brings him temporary joy. -OR he is the first character, an NPC or AI himself of sorts, to test how Caine's AI reacts to Jax. The AI portion of Jax would act as a "human" and see if Caine's adventures would be (relatively) safe. +Gangle actually got hit by a car, got paralyzed for the most part, and to escape the cruel reality of them having to pretend to be happy in front of friends and family and sad when they are alone, they end up putting on the VR headset given to them by a family member trying to make them feel better (maybe bought off of FaceBook Market or GoodWill). The noodle like arms represent the flexible and moveable body they once had. +Zooble most likely struggled with body issues and identity issue with them not having a preference for pronouns and being able to switch body parts (body dismorphia). +Pomni most likely worked at the company, a desk job, and found out information about the whole experiment. She found the only (left) existing model of the VR Headset and plans to put it on to help those inside the virtual experience and get them out. Unknowing that she would forget her motive, but still help those stuck inside in little ways (short therapy sessions). +Kinger is, obviously, one of the programmers. He mostly likely wanted to go in after working on it for a while to see what it was like. He observed those inside having 'fun' going through the adventures and wanted to see what it was like. Curosity killing the cat, as one would say. When going in, he programmed his headset to not earase his memories so he would be free-er than the others. But forgetting that he would also not be able to get out once he was in. I also think these people, before going in, are interviewed. Kind of like a therapy session; to see how their responses could be used to create the models of their digital selves. Pomni was maybe never taken seriously (so a Jester) and Zooble mentioned how they never felt great with their body (disassemble and change any parts).
She looked back at the Gloink Queen, this ridiculous monster being a guest at the fast food joint. Like he is. She accepts that Gummy Goo wont ever remember her.

Was I the only one who took Gangle running out into traffic as an unaliving attempt. The smile and last moments after the shift was her being relieved. It also makes me think her tragedy face is her only real face because it never breaks only her comedy one dose and all the other masks just cover it up. It also makes me give Jax a more generous read of wanting her to be upfront about it. Jax getting off shift and his license plate says Jax 001 makes me think he was the first one there and has watched and grown attached to numerous groups of people who didn’t make it, so has just given up getting close to people. So ensures everyone hates him to avoid it.
12:20 I think it's cope that people want Gummigoo to remember and think that his memories were wiped, when most likely the Gummigoo we know was deleted. And the Gummingoo from here on out is a new one that was A-posing prior to us seeing him.
Gotta say, I'm glad this episode came out as I got to see more of who Zoobel and Gangle are. I'm all for seeing them bond together more along with Pomni as they seem to be the most honest and open with their feelings and wanting to help. If what we hear about Ragatha is correct, she's a people pleaser so she's not as honest. Jax might just be distant. I've read a few theories that he's a jerk because he doesn't want to get attached to anyone if they abstract. IDK, it'll be interesting to see what happens with him. Kinger I imagine could be a good friend, if only his memory wasn't so damaged. Maybe he just needs to wear a bucket on his head all the time

I think i know why 57 is such a prominant number in this episode, its because gangle clocked out at 57, 3 minutes before she was supposed to, and then she got got by the truck.

i had a feeling that gummigoo DID remember but maybe he made a deal with caine to not disturb the players aka pomni and the others, what made me think of this is because in the first episode we see him in a restaurant with lot of other mannequin which are npcs just like caine, its possible caine had a meeting with gummigoo and told him to pretend like a normal npc who doesn't remember anything, you can see how he tried to hold his hand out for pomni and how he looked at pomni

Gangle is a brilliant representation of using masking as a coping mechanism for depression. The idea of having someone tell you they prefer it when you are hurting emotionally rather than when you are trying to be cheerful and feeling good about yourself. It feels so good to see the smile through the tears showing she finally found true happiness in the circus. I really love her character so much more after that episode.
I also like the part that the "plastic" aspect of the new mask has a load of meaning and foreshadowing.
This episode is dark, that last scene where Gangle gets hit by the truck, is what does it for me. When someone with severe depression is suddenly happy, it’s often a sign that they’re committing to suicide. She doesn’t trip onto the road, she basically does a trust fall before realizing what she’s doing, it’s actually really tragic…
That was my first thought, though I'm not sure if I'm thinking "mental breakdown causing her to be reckless and stumbling into the road" or "deep relief at being 'free' from everything and semi-intentionally running to the road"

What I did catch on is that Gangle is a representation of Depression, but even knowing that while watching this, it never connected some details for me. Thank you, wtf. This series never ceases to amaze me
My favorite TADC episode so far, that was nearly a masterpiece. Felt extremely real, and relatable in a sense. And characters were great, almost every single one (even Ragatha and Jax, opening up her feelings for once, and admitting that she doesn't like the majority of TADC cast or feels out of place around them, except Kinger, maybe, and Jax kind of accepting the circumstances and opening up to Pomni a little bit). The Gangle character moments were definitely the highlight.
Somebody on another thread said "suicidal ideation", where yeah, the person stops caring about their own safety because if they die from neglecting themselves, what of it?
It’s based on an Isikai where when someone sacrifices themselves to save someone else in an anime and gets reborn into a magical world. In this case it would be Gangle being reborn into the circus!
The part where Ragatha vents about tea parties and dancing lessons is a reference to the Raggedy Ann and Andy movie. Which is the inspiration for her, Jax, and the show itself.

Pomni wasn't able to talk to Gangle much directly, because Gangle instinctively masks when she's overwhelmed and doesn't want to show her true feelings, but Pomni choosing to close the shift for her did wonders. Probably even more than Pomni will ever know. This episode shows something really important: the little kindnesses you do for people can mean a lot. Not everyone can or will open up to you, but doing nice things for them can mean more than you realize. I like how this show offers real, multiple ways to support someone.
As someone who’s like Gangle, I have a friend who did something that might’ve not seemed like a big deal to most, but for me, it saved me from self destructing that night
I honestly think if Pomni didn't show that bit of kindness, Gangle would've abstracted before she even had the chance to close the restaurant. The music and the distortion really exemplified how she was on the brink. Having multiple people who you see as friends either highlight how inadequate you are, or feeling like your efforts of being "normal" have irreparably damaged your relationships would make you feel all alone and isolated, which I think is one of the biggest triggers for abstraction.

Ragatha being completely incapable of saying a single even minorly negative thing without being wasted, to the point that Gangle comments that it's hard to tell when she's being sincere or when she's just forcing herself, is far too real lol
The worst part for me is that, even when "drunk", Ragatha isn't unkind in the slightest. And the few times she says something mean, she immediately backtracks EVEN WHILE WASTED. Ragatha is *actually* kind, not someone who puts up a front purely to hide how bad of a person she is.
The worst part about being chronically depressed like Gangle is (speaking from experience) is not the lack of kindness, but the lack of knowledge. Simply being unsure if a friend is nice because they truly care, or are being nice only to make you feel better is really hard to deal with. For all Gangle knows, Ragatha's genuine kindness could just be her "not wanting to deal with Gangle's depressive episodes right now", and that lack of surety can make you spiral into being untrusting of even close friends' intentions. 😞😞😞
I love the foreshadowing when Gangle talks about drawing manga being an unrealistic dream and then in the last seen, you see her drawing it. She was projecting her frustrations.

I know a user for another channel that just leaves a comment entry open while they watch a video, writes all their comments there with timestamps as they go, and then posts the whole thing in a single comment when the video's over. That might be better than making a bunch of separate comments? Less effort too, and while it's not as much an issue for these since it's pretty obvious for all of them, it also makes it nice for knowing exactly what you might be responding to when it's not immediately clear.

Why do people not understand Ragatha never said "it is easier to deal with gangle", she said the comedy mask was more annoying. Like imagine you are relaxing and someone is all happy or trying hard near you, it is annoying, but you never say it or think you are being a dummy. Plus I still believe Jax and Ragatha have a point, in that Gangle wasn't themselves, but a fake cheery self. Faking or just pushing a mask to look normal, which is harmful and can get to people.

Spent years labeling her things she wasn't and kept putting the blame onto her, she raised the kids wrong, she did everything wrong and he had to show her how to properly do it. And she just excused his actions while bending over backwards to make everyone else happy thinking other people's happiness was her own... Right until the jerk shattered her whole world and she had to address all the issues all at once with interest.

It’s really interesting that Pomni has become a bit of a shining light in the darkness that is the Digital Circus. Even if it didn’t last long, she brought hope to Gumigoo that he did matter. She gave Kinger a moment where he was the most coherent he’s been in the entire series. And in the most recent episode, she likely saved Gangle from abstracting.

That said I also missed the fact cain sticking his tongue out was why bubbles tongue went in, and when he pushed it back in then bubbles tongue went back out. I just noticed what bubble was doing and Caine saying it was weird. 😅

In this episode you can clearly see the difference in the character relationships based on how Gangle treats her "employees". She gave Jax a hard time (for obvious reasons), she at least attempted to be helpful with Ragatha when she offered to lend a hand while Ragatha was on the sauce. Since Zooble was actually doing their job Gangle didn't have anything against them and relied on them when she was struggling.
When it came to Pomni she was initially frustrated with her since she wasn't doing her job and was stalking the gummy gator, however later on she was at least willing to open up a little bit to Pomni about some of her feelings before she ultimately decided to put on both her literal and her figurative masks back on so she could go back to work. Ultimately Gangle at least tried to be supportive and helpful to those she considered her "friends" and was more aggressive and unreasonable with Jax who has been (presumably) picking on her for multiple years now.
Gummigoo showing up again and not recognizing Pomni was such a gut punch. Her first true friend in this world, and he technically never met her. Tragic.

I don’t know, at the end when he and his friends are leaving Spudsy’s and Pomni comes to say bye, Gummigoo looks a little sad. That leads me to believe that Gummigoo did actually remember her but didn’t say anything in fear of Caine possibly erasing him from existence or he didn’t exactly remember her but something lingered in his head that she might be familiar to him. Again I don’t know but that look he gave her was concerning.

It is sad many can see the happy mask is a mask to hide Gangle's depression, be it antidepressents or a mask to hide her depression, yet people get annoyed people want Gangle to not hide behind the mask with Jax and Ragatha. Both did it in ways that hurt, though in Ragatha's was more just carelessly saying something from being on the sauce, both do have a point or a honest feeling that the happy mask, isn't their friend or truly them.
@@jjmara01 People mask for different reasons, but one reason is that pretending to be happy is closer to actually being happy. In fact, I once had a therapist who explicitly told me I should mask because "if you do it long enough, eventually you'll start believing it."
So this idea that it's good to say the mask "isn't you" and is a bad thing... is still messed up. The idea that the "real you" is a broken, depressed creature, and anything possibly happy is fake and bad... That's awful. It reminds me of the people who say things like "I don't ever want my mental illness to be cured, because there's nothing to cure, because this is just who I am!" No... it doesn't have to be, and it's debilitating, and acting like any other way of living, thinking, or feeling is inherently bad because it's "not really you" is just painful.

I dont know if anyone has said this but what i remember from health class and my own medication, antidepressants is suppose to help getting your energy and receive the proper serotonin levels. One of the side effects of it is having....thoughts of being gone, as the medication is now giving enough energy to go through with it (i was warned about it when i started the treatment). The job, masking, and being told people like you better when you're depressed, it can definitely push someone too far. I dont believe it was an accident, one of the signs of making the choice to end it is feeling happiness and a sense of relief.

Yeah it is kind of odd how quite a few reactors think she is actually happy there when it is pretty clear she is on the verge of breaking and throws herself into oncoming traffic.

I wonder if it really is purely the punishment threat or if it just feels more real, yknow? its not some wacky adventure, its a shitty fast food job and maybe that makes Jax think of it more like real life where he perhaps wouldn't be as big of a "threat" to people around him.
I think there were many things for Jax. This adventure is boring and monotonous, and "normal" is one of the big details. Then add that the person he loves to torment the most who's as submissive as a doormat is in charge of the adventure, and would actually torture him back in return shook him.
Its nice, while Jax has had to suffer from his actions before usually it was because something just didn't work out. This was the first time as far as we know he was full on "punished" for his bs. Basically, the bully finally got "bullied"
It's a powerful reminder for Jax most likely that in his previous world he was a loser who had to answer to a shift manager at a dead-end job, but in the Digital Circus at least his life is more interesting and he can pretend to be the main character of his own imagination with actual power and agency. Working at a fast food restaurant reminded him too much of the real world where he did not enjoy things at all, when he went to his car after his shift and just buried his head in the steering wheel I felt that after getting off a hard shift at work on a visceral level.
Easter egg: The scene where Jax is undergoing re-training, when the mask flashes on screen and music is playing, is a reference to "Halloween III: Season of the Witch."

Something interesting I noticed was that Cain gave everyone (except Kinger who wasn't there) a B+ so he didn't have to 'punish' anyone. That's why I think he's either incapable of, or just genuinly doesn't want to cause them intentional harm.

Caine would have punished anybody that Gangle threw under the bus. She could've chosen literally anybody at work (probably except Zooble who was the best employee) if she wanted to be a bad supervisor and blame her underlings for failure. If she chose Jax out of spite Jax would've been punished, but the fact that he was pretty civil and even concerned about Ragatha and Pomni towards the end of his shift probably prevented that from happening.
The whole scene where gangle threw her mask just really unsettled me- even before I knew what happened at the end of it. I don’t fully know why, the music, the lighting, the sudden change in everything just gave me chills.

This was another episode sequence that tried to fool us as viewers to feel hopefull and happy about the "character development", however this resolved nothing, gangles joy in this is temporary and very short, i actually felt better once the twist of that scene happened, because i wouldve hated the message this wouldve told if gangle joyously ran into the sunset because hurray she ended the shift early... this episode will stick with me for a looong time

I kinda couldn’t help but read a lot into it the first time I saw it because my mind jumped to how I was when I was at my lowest point in life. A sudden feeling of freedom because you knew “it would all be okay soon.” If you kinda get what I mean… but again I’m probably reading too much into it. It looked like it was an accident

@@mweeee She might have done it in the heat of the moment, but fully realized what she did after she was right in front of the truck. That's a common theme with survivors of suicide, where they change their minds after the damage has already been done.
Did everyone just forget the concept of abstraction or did everyone just assume that Gangle has plot armor against abstraction, because that moment after Zooble and Ragatha left genuinely left me scared if she would abstract or not, Thank you Pomni for saving the day!!
I know everyone wants Gummigoo to remember, but given he is just an npc, it's fairly likely this is not even the same Gummigoo that Pomni previously interacted with. He'd merely be a copy and paste of the default npc asset.

From what I could formulate, Gangle is meant to represent people who mask their depression and frustrations. People who strive for more then their current circumstances, which is what the ending scene was, Gangle wanting to escape her mundane life

Jax is always having fun in the adventures and escaping reality however he wants. This 'adventure' was literally a big dose of irl reality, where he had to work a tedious mundane job (he was always watching the clock and clocked-out immediately when his shift was over). Being forced to work a regular job is the exact opposite of escaping reality and living a life of complete hedonism, so it was the worst nightmare for Jax.
Ironically, he's only civil to Pomni when he's forced to be caged in the real world, the same way most co-workers are fake nice to other co-workers (just so they don't get HR department involved and lose their jobs or their source of income, or etc.)
Honestly I like how the metaphors of medication masking and the realities of how customer services jobs were displayed here.
Especially with each character besides Zooble showing what happens when their own masks break: Ragatha when “drunk” is very loose lips and unfiltered with her thoughts, Jax when pressured to obey things just wears himself out so quickly that he’s just exhausted, Pomni is kind of the opposite since she’s putting on a mask of trying to be composed, and then Gangle herself just being like forcing herself into a position she forgot how much she hated despite thinking the control of the job would keep her grounded

While working at the restaurant she used to work at, she had to put on a fake happy persona like this episode. Her leaving early symbolizes her leaving her job. When she left her job she was able to get rid of the persona or the ‘mask’. Her getting hit by a truck symbolizes going into the circus. She worked fast food and put on a fake face, she left and became happy, the second she became happy she got sent to the circus, where she wasn’t happy anymore

I think the “manic mask” is a metaphor for antidepressants, because we see how the mask initially really helps Gangle in feeling happy and energetic, with the effects of the mask deteriorating towards the end. At the end of the episode we see Gangle throw away the mask (i.e. throwing away her meds) and going cold turkey. Despite going cold turkey, even that has consequences as we see her running into oncoming traffic.
ragatha is not as nice as she seems. i dont quite remember, but i think in the first episode or pilot it was mentioned how she fake laughed at kofmo's (member we saw abstract) jokes. she just seems to people please like you said, being her friend may be a bit difficult because she is usually unable to tell how she actually feels (unless you are jax)

All of the indie shows I’ve watched I have only found enjoyment in watching them, but they have never managed to end up in my top 5 favorite shows. I’m not sure how but the day I watched the premiere for The Amazing Digital Circus, it managed to hop into my top 5 favorite animated shows.

Anothet hint of Gangle's drawing skill is that in ep. 2, in Kaufmo's funeral, Gangle showed a drawing she made of both laughing together
My fan therory is that:
+Jax is the first ever person to join the Circus (hence the 001 on his liscenese plate), a guinea pig. Most likely worked a low end job and got "recruited to try a new headset". His life most likely was terrible, and now in a "better" space, he is a bit more wild and tries to do things that brings him temporary joy.
-OR he is the first character, an NPC or AI himself of sorts, to test how Caine's AI reacts to Jax. The AI portion of Jax would act as a "human" and see if Caine's adventures would be (relatively) safe.
+Gangle actually got hit by a car, got paralyzed for the most part, and to escape the cruel reality of them having to pretend to be happy in front of friends and family and sad when they are alone, they end up putting on the VR headset given to them by a family member trying to make them feel better (maybe bought off of FaceBook Market or GoodWill). The noodle like arms represent the flexible and moveable body they once had.
+Zooble most likely struggled with body issues and identity issue with them not having a preference for pronouns and being able to switch body parts (body dismorphia).
+Pomni most likely worked at the company, a desk job, and found out information about the whole experiment. She found the only (left) existing model of the VR Headset and plans to put it on to help those inside the virtual experience and get them out. Unknowing that she would forget her motive, but still help those stuck inside in little ways (short therapy sessions).
+Kinger is, obviously, one of the programmers. He mostly likely wanted to go in after working on it for a while to see what it was like. He observed those inside having 'fun' going through the adventures and wanted to see what it was like. Curosity killing the cat, as one would say. When going in, he programmed his headset to not earase his memories so he would be free-er than the others. But forgetting that he would also not be able to get out once he was in.
I also think these people, before going in, are interviewed. Kind of like a therapy session; to see how their responses could be used to create the models of their digital selves. Pomni was maybe never taken seriously (so a Jester) and Zooble mentioned how they never felt great with their body (disassemble and change any parts).
She looked back at the Gloink Queen, this ridiculous monster being a guest at the fast food joint. Like he is. She accepts that Gummy Goo wont ever remember her.

I don’t think Gummigoo remembers but made an educated guess so his look might’ve been a silent apology for not being able to remember
Was I the only one who took Gangle running out into traffic as an unaliving attempt. The smile and last moments after the shift was her being relieved. It also makes me think her tragedy face is her only real face because it never breaks only her comedy one dose and all the other masks just cover it up. It also makes me give Jax a more generous read of wanting her to be upfront about it. Jax getting off shift and his license plate says Jax 001 makes me think he was the first one there and has watched and grown attached to numerous groups of people who didn’t make it, so has just given up getting close to people. So ensures everyone hates him to avoid it.
12:20 I think it's cope that people want Gummigoo to remember and think that his memories were wiped, when most likely the Gummigoo we know was deleted. And the Gummingoo from here on out is a new one that was A-posing prior to us seeing him.
Gotta say, I'm glad this episode came out as I got to see more of who Zoobel and Gangle are. I'm all for seeing them bond together more along with Pomni as they seem to be the most honest and open with their feelings and wanting to help.
If what we hear about Ragatha is correct, she's a people pleaser so she's not as honest. Jax might just be distant. I've read a few theories that he's a jerk because he doesn't want to get attached to anyone if they abstract. IDK, it'll be interesting to see what happens with him. Kinger I imagine could be a good friend, if only his memory wasn't so damaged. Maybe he just needs to wear a bucket on his head all the time

I think i know why 57 is such a prominant number in this episode, its because gangle clocked out at 57, 3 minutes before she was supposed to, and then she got got by the truck.
In this particular episode, the reference of 57 was to "Heinz 57" Ketchup. The 'stupid sauce' being the direct reference. i had a feeling that gummigoo DID remember but maybe he made a deal with caine to not disturb the players aka pomni and the others, what made me think of this is because in the first episode we see him in a restaurant with lot of other mannequin which are npcs just like caine, its possible caine had a meeting with gummigoo and told him to pretend like a normal npc who doesn't remember anything, you can see how he tried to hold his hand out for pomni and how he looked at pomni
I wouldn't think anyone would interpret Gangle jumping in front of that truck as an accident. Interesting
