Hi I want to apply for the EDD and the last question they ask about the Wages for 2019 . I started work on 2021 how to answer this question.
Being an independent contractor and filing for UI for the first time I appreciate you so much. You articulate and explain everything so clearly. I was literally freaking out that I had not filed my PUA claim correctly. I realized after watching your video there were a few mistakes I made and today after calling EDD to make those corrections I was approved. Can’t thank you enough! 🙏🏽💜
That's wonderful - I am so happy this helped you and so happy to hear you were approved! Would love for you to share the video link in your social media, like, and subscribe. Best wishes to you!!

Thank You. I was frustrated as I knew the portal opened at 5:30am on Tuesday. I tried to get on the system considerably later in the day and received the "We are sorry too many people trying to get on error" I literally just got in today. I pulled up your video and applied page by page along with you - then pushed Submit. Thanks. I have been walking family through so many stimulus options. It's overwhelming to say the least! All we can do is be knowledgeable and try.
I am so glad you were able to apply and this was helpful! It has been so frustrating for everyone - I hope you get approved and receive benefits with no further issues! Would love for you to post/share the link to this video, like, and subscribe! Thanks and best wishes!
Thank you for guiding me through the entire process. I'm self-employed as a realtor and had applied 3 times but every time was either denied or I would get no response back from E.D.D. but after taking your video step by step, I was approved to certify for benefits the very next morning. You are "AWESOME" continue to do what you are doing, you are helping many in need!!
So good to hear this, same thing happened to me. Help 😫
That's so great, I am so happy to hear this was helpful for you! I truly appreciate the kind words and thoughtful comment. Best wishes to you!
Hi!I would need to know a specific question or more information about your situation in order to advise
Please tell me what you did differently than the times you got no response. Ive been waiting almost 4 weeks and have not heard anything.
Great job Ginny - very helpful. I have not applied yet, but am planning to. Always feel a little better about these forms somewhat knowing what lies ahead. Thanks!
Thank you Marlies - so great to hear from you and thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for taking the time to do these incredibly informative videos. I tried a couple of times to apply for PUA and was getting errors or not quite understanding one question in particular. Watching your video enabled me to breeze through the application and ultimately receiving money.
I will be forever indebted to you, for saving my life! You are the best youtuber I have come across in a long time. Thank you again.
You are so welcome! So glad these are helpful!! Thank you so much for letting me know and for such kind words, I truly appreciate that!

Can I ask how they didnt give you an amount? I filed like a week ago and I dont see any changes when logging in and I try to file again and it says error and that theres already an application being processed.

Thank you so much, Ginny, for this fantastic tutorial. I kept waiting for the promised self-employed portal from the EDD, and now I know I need to file under UI. Your explanations and demonstrations going through the application are so helpful. I am now ready to apply and know I can watch your follow-up video regarding questions if I need more help. One thing I would suggest is to remind applicants to SAVE after completing each page of the application before moving to the next page so they can go in later and not have to re-enter info. I am so impressed with you and imagine you are a phenomenal photographer and businesswoman!
Thanks so much for such kind words, I am so glad this was helpful and really appreciate your thoughtful comment.
Thanks for the feedback! Great point. Mine saved automatically - I had to re-open the browser several times, but that would be a great tip.

@@ginnysilver hello how about me owning a barbershop and being a active barber, I also have a job when I enter my job information will that disqualify me?
Ginny Silver - Business Coach for Creatives jenny hi! I need help! I am a Uber driver, this money makes up most of my income, however, I also have another job which I get a W-2 . EDD says I can’t get any unemployment because of this! This makes me so upset! Do you have any information to help me?
Hi Ginny, thank you for making this video. I'll share what happened with my claim in California. I work(ed) 3 part-time jobs out of necessity--can't find full-time work. One self-employed as personal office assistant. Two on payroll.
#1 on payroll -- food & beverage demonstrator/brand ambassador - last day worked 2/28 due to COVID. No return date in sight.
#2 - Self-employed no longer working due to COVID. No return date in sight.
#3 - contractor on military base on payroll, offices closed but being paid for 24/hours a week.
Not thinking the pandemic would last so long and not thinking I could qualify due to having #3 job still, I didn't file right away. As things with UI changed, I was able to finally get through to file on April 19 for UI hoping to get enough to make up for the #1 job back to the last day worked of 2/28. Didn't really care about the federal $600/week. I supplied all my employers, my self-employed and all wages earned. They did not figure my self-employment wages into my Weekly Benefit Amount, as it wasn't showing in the Award Letter. Only my payroll jobs were listed in the Award Letter. I was approved for $209/week and thankful for that. But not back pay to 2/28. Benefits started day I applied, 4/19. I received $418 + $1,200. Although I can't access it yet, as my transfer to my credit union didn't go through. My BofA EDD account won't let me add a new bank account until I "delete" the recurring account, but it won't let me delete it. That's besides the point of my comment. First day to certify was May 17 for the past two weeks. I gave my gross earnings and 24 hours a week for #3 job, $408.48 each week. And, of course, I fell into that loophole as so many others (in other states too, besides CA). Denied due to "Excessive Earnings."
But I cannot do anything else, because my claim year is still open. Can't file under PUA, self-employed, nothing. My account just keeps going to the status page showing my certified weeks have zero payment due to "Excessive Earnings." Do you have any knowledge as to how I can apply under another category? I haven't received a letter yet with the denial and the Appeal Form, which is supposed to indicate to what address to send your appeal. But appealing won't work in this case. Thank you.
Hi! Sorry to hear that - there's no category where excessive earnings would not apply. If you earn income during a week, that income causes your UI/PUA benefit to decrease and if you reach a certain amount you are not eligible. I have a video which explains how this is calculated, but there seems to be no way to get their income cap waived.
@@ginnysilver Hi, thanks for the quick response! Well, it's strange and doesn't make sense that they approved me at first with those same earnings from the employer I'm still being paid by. In fact, I worked more hours and made more in March, shown on my application. And then now, it's too much when I certify. It wasn't even worth all the hours I put into applying and getting excited to be approved, to then be cut off. EDD should have this information on the website, so that thousands of us didn't bother with it. I'm lucky they paid me for 2 weeks, some people certified and got denied before they even got their first approved payment.
@@kimberlystaley1337 I agree - the system is very flawed, I'm so sorry
Thank you so much,Ginny! Your presentation has been most helpful!

You've been so helpful my dear you made it so much easier. I filed yesterday your help made such a difference
So glad to hear that!! Good luck on your claim!!
ALSO, under "additional information" #7 when it says "Are you currently self-employed....or plan to be self-employed?", I read online that if you are impacted by the COVID19 pandemic, you're supposed to CLICK NO. They said, "this is a tricky question, if you are impacted (which is why you're applying) put NO!" EDD Reps are reporting receiving many calls on that issue!!
Hi!! Thanks so much for this-YES that question states IN the question that if you are unemployed from your self employment due to covid to answer NO.... however with government forms I can't bring myself to answer untruthfully knowing the possible repercussions, and as a wedding photographer I receive a 2021 deposit last week - this is my only booking I have/will received payment for in MarIch/April/May/June so I need the PUA however, since I earned income from my business and DID do an owner's draw to my personal account, I felt checking YES and then explaining my loss of income in the box which pops up when you select yes after was the best option for ME. Should I be denied, I will reapply or contest with documentation knowing things will be backpaid to my effected date.
This one got me confused . It says if you are self employed put yes . But if you got impacted by Corona virus put no. So mind-boggling i thought i put the wrong answer because i seen a lady put yes to #7 so I thought I did it wrong
I got approved 2 months ago. Because this Amazing woman Ginny . You are the best . I wish you the best of the best for your business .
@@ginnysilver Hi Ginny! Thank you so much for this! The way I've learned to treat deposits on future jobs to be done, shooting a wedding for example, is not yet income earned. Once you've shot the wedding, or provided the service, then you've earned the income. Hope this helps.

Thank u so much i been out of work since 2/10/2020. Thank u just waiting for edd now.
You are very welcome!! Good luck with your claim!
Number 7 asking if you are currently self-employed is a trick question. It clearly states, if you are impacted by covid-19 pandemic, click NO. For people who are self-employed seeking PUA should mark no on that one.
Thank JayCarl! I selected YES for this because I am still receiving an occasional booking for 2021 wedding clients and am technically receiving MINIMAL and sporadic self employment income, so I am still technically self employed. If you click YES then another box pops up and asks if you are available/willing to LEAVE your self employed work for full time work, and if you select yes to this then it shows that you are available to accept fulltime work should the opportunity arise. This is just what I selected for myself, but if you are receiving NO self employment income at all, then this should be checked NO according to my interpretation, though I could be mistaken!
That question had me spinning!! I ended up choosing no. 🤷🏼♀️
@@Gobbldygoop111 I have added some additional notes in the comment regarding this one - both on why I felt I had to say yes and what the EDD now states they recommend - they just added a "unemployment guide" on their page which contains new PUA info not present in their previous FAQ's
Please see the additional notes I have added in my description for information on this both explaining my own answer and more importantly, the info the EDD released today
Ginny Silver - The Business of Wedding Photography requirements to “actively seek new/similar work” is lifted during COVID. You can deny the opportunity to seen new even if available work “due to COVID-19 concerns- unless you are in the ESSENTIAL WORKFORCE business (for specific list: google) - however, if you are not REQUIRED, but only ALLOWED to word during the Pandemic -- then it is your RIGHT to chose “stay at home” or shelter-in-place, if issues. If you aren’t within direct zone of any two above “keep low profile” zones - you out of lack (maybe other options will be/ARE available- Google,, call small biz adm or your city hall ..)
I suggest to verify each “no, you/we can’t” through several sources, before moving on to other options.... When there is a will, there is a way.
You seem genuinely kind person. Hope you really get huge photography business increase after this crap. Good luck to you
Thanks so much :) I feel so badly for my 2020 wedding clients - 2021 is now jam packed due to so many reschedules!
Hi! Thank you so much for your helpful video. I applied last Tuesday opening day.
I had W2 Employment up until June 2019. The entire year I also did freelance event photography. I'm afraid I answered questions wrong regarding Employment History. I listed my W2 Employer as well as 4 freelance event photography clients that I worked for sporadically throughout the year.- Should I have done that? When asked which employer I worked for the longest in the 18 month period, I listed one of my freelance event photography clients - Did I misread the question? When asked If I'd be returning to an employer.. I put yes thinking it meant I'd be returning to my recurring clients. I feel like such a dummy and I have a feeling I have mistakenly entered the wrong information and will not be approved. Do you think I can file a new claim? If so, How soon can I do that?
Hi!! There's a few questions here which I'll answer with separate comments so standby... You are so welcome - so glad the video was helpful
FIRST - W2 employment and Self employment must both be claimed and full net income for both must be accurate. The EDD will put you into UI (which is totally fine) if you have $1300 or more W2 earnings in one of your 2019 quarters. They determine PUA or UI automatically.
Next - you did make an error in listing a freelance client as an employer. As a freelancer/self employed individual, you are your own employer. If you aren't issued a W2, you are not their employee. Instead, you should have listed yourself, your business name or your own name if you dont have a different DBA and your business address or your personal address if you dont have a business address. With an honest mistake, you shouldn't be penalized but it may cause a hiccup in your approval so don't be surprised if you have to refile and try again. HOWEVER, hopefully you don't have to - I believe you may be approved based on your W2 employment rather than your self employment, but thats just a guess.
You will be receiving a paper statement in the mail - one stating the awarded amount, and another which lists all of your information they have on file - both which they have pulled themselves also that which you have filed. On this statement they will have instructions for how to correct anything which is inaccurate - so follow those instructions to correct things.
The EDD wants you to state that you are ready, willing, and actively seeking work. If you answered those in that manner, I think you will be ok. Check your status as it should be available to see online now, by following these steps here: ua-cam.com/video/7nPsSNE7Yjs/v-deo.html
Omg thank you! Every other video is just them explaining how it works with the title “how to file for unemployment” without showing how to fill it out. Thank you!
So glad this would helpful!! Please share the link and subscribe my channel is a hairs length away from getting ads ;)
I have one question, what if I was employed for 3 months in 2019, then the rest of the year I was a gig worker and now I’m just an eBay reseller. I’m stuck because it won’t let me add that I was self employed it just goes straight to my last employer
Yes if you had any w2 income you must declare it. If you received $1300 or higher in yourhighest earnig 2019 quarter on a W2 you will be eligible for traditional UI
Ginny Silver - Business Coach for Creatives yeah but I stopped working there after March of 2019.
@@Mondolation Yes but if you had $1300 or more income in one quarter in 2019, you will qualify for UI (as long as you left the job through no fault of your own) - last date is irreverent as long as it is in 2019
So, is there a 'second wave' or is it just the first wave still??
Great video! I also got approved on 4/29. However. In the notes section (right side of where the award is noted on EDD) they indicate that I must be available for work AND I must look for full time work. I’m classified as self-employed. When you go through the certification process they indicate same as above. Furthermore, it is a requirement that you keep a record of your search for work and provide an option of entering your details regarding your work search efforts on-line, per EDD. Not sure if I’m correct , but I intend on providing in person contacts with potential business, which is difficult in my circumstances, but doable. I understand for some that may not be possible. If not in person you can call, email, fax or mail for new business, pet EDD. Again, not sure if I’m right, but unless I learn something otherwise that’s what I will do. Deadline to certify is 5/23/20. So I’m going to wait and think about this more before I “pull the trigger”. Good luck to everyone!!!
Hi, I have the app filled out, but it keeps rejecting me telling me my net income is red flagged and not accepted. Do you mind me asking what format you used? I.E. it wont accept as an example 30,000 for annual net income (?)
Hi! EDD states that at this time due to COVID they are NOT requiring you to apply for and look for work or upload your resume, unemployment.edd.ca.gov/guide#after-you-submit see the very bottom of the page
@@andreabaird8949 Hi! I used xxx,xxx format. Perhaps the system is too busy and you should attempt again in a few hours? So sorry youre having trouble!
Andrea Baird I imputed my income in this format: 30000 instead of 30,000. Not sure that’s the reason it didn’t work. Just sharing what I did. Good luck.
Ginny Silver - The Business of Wedding Photography I agree. But, as you know when you certify it states something different. Lorre Levy, spokeswoman
for EDD, stated that you don’t have to certify
for applicable periods noted on EDD website. More specifically, if you say that you didn’t look for work by choosing No they will correct on back end of the certification process. I understand they probably didn’t have enough time to fully incorporate all the necessary changes for self employed individuals. I did same thing you did and included clients and potential clients as part of effort to generate income, which may not be necessary, but better to be careful when there is conflicting information. Thank you so much for doing these 2 videos. Knowing that my thought process was same as someone else gives me more comfort I did this correctly. For example, I also said yes to question 7 when I was applying as I still have some income. I know yours was a retainer vs immediate income. But same idea. You also included something in the search for work situation, which I did as well. Thanks again.
I haven’t filled my taxes for 2019, dose it effect my application for PUA ?
NO - taxes aren't due until 7/15 so you are ok! You DO need to know your NET INCOME, however it is not required that you have your taxes filed
I think you are doing a great job!!!

Soo helpful!! I have one question Ginny. I am a self-employed model. On the last page of the "additional information" section, where it says :"select the option that best describes how you were impacted by the COVID-19 public health emergency". - you chose the option "Your place of employment is closed as a direct result of the COVID-19 public health emergency". However, I felt that I should instead choose the option "You are an independent contractor with reportable income (ex. IRS Form 1099) and you are forced to stop working because COVID-19 has severely limited your ability to continue performing your customary work activities". Would this be the wrong choice? Should I choose the one you selected? Please advise if possible, thanks!
I'm assuming you are paid as a contractor, correct? Or are you registered as a business? If you receive 1099's and book your work on an independent contractor basis, YES select the option you mentioned
@@ginnysilver I'm not registered as a business. I do receive 1099s for everything. Perfect thank you!

If claim status invalid and claim balance in the minus, what is going on?
All weeks from week ending 03/21/2020 to 08/15/2020 have been certified. Only 2 weeks have been issued for payment. Claim is a self employed pandemic. Answered questions 1-6a “no”, questions 7&8, didn’t mark box. Can’t understand why issued payment for 2weeks, when answered all questions “no” for all weeks. If invalid status doesn’t change soon, what can be done to get payment issued for all remaining weeks?
Ah - if you answered all Q's no, you may be disqualified - watch me certify here: ua-cam.com/video/E8Tr1oKo_Uo/v-deo.html . The first two weeks are often issues asap before collecting a certification to push claims through. If you show a balance as a negative, this could mean they are going to ask you to pay back those two weeks. I would attempt to correct your certifications - you will need to call in and let them know you made an error on your certification.
Hi Ginney, I am very grateful for your calm and succinct directions. Super helpful. I submitted a claim and now am being asked to certify my employment. My specific question feels tricky - as an offsite event planner - work executed in Oct, Nov and December of 2019, was paid in April of 2020, thus not reflected on my 1099 for 2019... My question is - do I include the amounts for those invoices even tho not on my 1099 for 2019 - in the total amount of income loss for 2019? OR, no. Which I did not in my claim. ALSO, where the certification asks for any income received during SIP, do I indicate the April 2020 payment for the back pay of work from Oct-Dec 2019? BC it is back pay for 2019, not income for 2020.. Thank you so much. Sorry if I seem obtuse...I just don't know the answer.
Hi! April 2020 payment would be income received in April and if you are self employed you would claim it when you receive the money in April - The EDD states this in their video here: ua-cam.com/video/M5NDohIqT-0/v-deo.html (watch the whole video)
@@ginnysilver thank you. Just so I am understanding, the bulk payment I received in April 2020 for event planning rendered as an independent contractor in 10-12/2019 - I would indicate in the April week of certification as YES income received? I am just concerned b/c it was a large bulk payment hundreds of hours, and I am worried my unemployment will be drastically reduced as they may perceive it as work done in the week of mid April 2020...which in fact it is not, it was payment from 2019... Again, I apologize - I know this isn't your profession - but I certainly DO appreciate your calm help here. And, I did watch the linked video, they didn't amplify on late payment so to speak... Thank you again!
when I say late payment, and before I said back pay - which is incorrect as I was not an employee for the client, I was an independent contractor. All of my work - my 3 annual events were cancelled as of 13 March 2020 due to SIP etc... I have had no income nor work this year... I usually commence planning in March for the seasonal offsites...

Ginny, I am on a regular ui claim. I requested my backpay and was notified to certify all the weeks. However, I submitted the request within the ten days indicated after receiving my initial award letter. Edd did not respond. I made numerous online questions, and requests. I also requested numerous times on ask edd backdate my claim. The first attempt was on June 3rd, and it wasn't the end of July that they finally processed my request. I certified for all the unpaid weeks and on the last 4 weeks it exhausted my claim balance to zero. I went into peuc , however they skipped over the four weeks that were pending, continued the payments at the current date of that time. Again no response to my request. Finally, I was able to speak to someone only the phone, which I had numerous times before. This time I was told I would not get the additional 600 that I was intially suppose to get because I didn't have a weekly payment to accompany it. However had the edd responded to my requests at a reasonable amount of time. I would have not max out my benefits. It just would have max out at a earlier date. I would have been given 2400 more if they didn't it the right way. She also told me that whoever processed my backdate, forgot to change the date I became employed, which I also reported within ten days to correct my award letter. I was told , no appeal, nothing I can do? Any suggestions Unemployment, she only backdated the date for payment. I was then told that because of the processors mistake
If you already filed a claim they won’t even let you file a new claim with the same email how does that work ?
Just applied and THANK YOU SO MUCH for making the process much much easier! Really appreciated.
You are so welcome!! So happy to hear that!
Would love for you to subscribe if you haven't done so yet :)
I got through to the EDD today. I was also able to leave my # and have them call me back when it was my turn in the que. The min wait was said to be 23 min. It was longer, but finally a rep called me back. I asked why after waiting 3 months for any payments, I was still pending. Then he says I'm under review. This is the 3rd time I have talked to an EDD rep in a month & a half and told everything was okay, I just needed to wait 7-10 business days, etc. I was asked all kinds of questions by this guy & finally asked to speak to a supervisor. Then, the icing on the cake, he hung up on me! Can you believe it? Of course you can! So ridiculous!
Hi. Is it too late to file a pua claim ?
Hi Ginny, my 18 year old daughter made about $2000 last summer doing gig work. She was paid in cash. So for 2019 we have no solid proof she worked other than our word. This year, Jan. Feb. and part of March, she was paid by venmo so we do have proof that she made $795. Would she be eligible if we just said she only worked this year. Congratulations! I'm glad you got approved
Hi Karen! Unemployment and PUA benefits are intended for those doing business legally and paying taxes as opposed to under the table work, so I wouldn't think that she would be eligible without a 2019 Schedule C from taxes or 1099's, so sorry about that.
Hi Ginny, we are going to do her taxes. In Ca. we have until July 15. No under the table here. But I think you answered by question. Due taxes first before applying. Thank you for your help.
@@karenkramer3760 Completely understand! If she was issued venmo payments larger than $600 from one individual/business, she should have received a 1099 form which could also be used as income proof without needing to complete taxes
Hi Ginny, she was paid by venmo for Jan. Feb. and March for this year making $795 this year. Should I make sure I get the 1099 from her employer before applying?Want to be prepared. I don't know anything about unemployment. Thank you so much
In other words, the 1099 would be for 2020 work. Last year when she was 17 years old with no bank account, she only accepted cash for different odd jobs. I don't even think we would have to include 2019 for her unemployment because the amount was so small.
Hi Ginny, Thank you for putting up this helpful information. I am so glad you are from California, as I am. I was very interested to see that you had no trouble entering Photographer as your work type. I am an independent contractor musician who has been entertaining senior citizens in nursing homes, senior centers, and hospitals for the last 5 years. My work came to a screeching halt on March 15th when I saw the sign posted to the site where I had gone to play advising me in so few words that I was not allowed to enter. So, I entered Musician on my application and that nasty little blue reject sign appeared. I hit the Help button. It said Work Type Examples: Salesperson, Electrician, Truck Driver. That's it. It did not list Photographer or anything like that. I got so frustrated. I could not go further with my application. So, in desperation, I entered Salesperson, even though that is not what I do for work. Salesperson rejected as well. I did not see where you did anything different from what I did on the previous page. You listed yourself as your employer, I believe. You are self-employed, so you are your own supervisor etc. I just wish I knew why you had no trouble entering Photographer as Work Type.
Hi Robert! So sorry you are having this trouble. Are you able to get to the screen where you can type in a work type, type it in, and hit SEARCH? Upon hitting search, does it come back with zero results or are you receiving some other sort of error? I would suggest typing in terms such as performer, band, artist and then be sure to click the SEARCH button and the options will populate
Additionally, what was your date you tried to apply?
Excellent Explanation! good job!
Thank you
Ginny, I love your videos! They are so helpful and informative, and have really helped ease my anxiety so thank you! I have a question. I have been on the PEUC extension, but I am confused when September rolls around if I will be put on the FEDED or won't receive aid after that. I'm also a reseller part time, so I'm wondering if you think it would be best to apply for the self employed option that you discuss in this video. I've also been trying to get through using your phone tricks bc one of my weeks ending 7/10 has been stuck in pending as well. I'm going to try to call the switchboard tomorrow to see if I can have an adjuster call me back to help me. Please help advise on what I should do! Thanks so much again.

Thank you for your presentation,Ginny. I may have missed it but I did not hear you mention the 'alterate" method of computation of claims. This can be used if the claimant could not qualify under the standard method. Using the alternate method income from this year 2020 may be considered. EDD states that the alternate method will 'automatically" be considered if the claimant does not qualify on the standard method.. That is not necessarily true. They did not check my claim using the alternate method (which would have. qualified me for benefits
I had to resort to USPS to send an appeal to which I never received an actual response. However about 3 weeks after I mailed EDD I received a paper certification form which I immediately completed & returned. 10 working days have passed , I have heard nothing. I have not been able to utilize UIO because my account has been locked since it's inception.
I will stop there. My take on this is Ca EDD is totally overrun while attempting operate with an outdated system and a large number of new hires & transferred employees who do not know what they are doing. Completely understandable given the circumstances.
Thanks for listening.

I have a question. I mentioned earlier this week last week?? Why the Edd is not applying the claim date of 02/02/2020 from the claim instead edd applies the date 9/2020 thru 12/2020, for someone who is a contractor and serverly affected financially by this pandemic as everyone else. J. Larry did file a backdate request thru ASK EDD link you provided and their response was not a good one and certainly not one the claiment understands.
"unfortunately we are unable to process your request to backdate your claim to the effective date.the new claim effective date would lead to a new base period. Wages in the new base period are clearly insufficient to establish an SBP OR ABP claim."
CAN YOU PLEASE HELP TO UNDERSTAND. This is self employed individual who owns his own company!?!!!! THANK YOU
Hi- Information on base period can be found here: www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwiG69n4gIbsAhWUFzQIHR6CB50QFjADegQIBBAB&url=https%3A%2F%2Fedd.ca.gov%2Fpdf_pub_ctr%2Fde8714ab.pdf&usg=AOvVaw3Ykt3D6iJ1q1RCw2ZIIrGI and I am not familiar with those additional terms. Hey Ginny, I thought I would update my process; maybe it will help someone. I previously filed (improperly, as I'm self-employed) prior to 4/28, then refiled as self-employed on 4/28 when the new forms were live. I didn't hear A THING, kept checking all the time - and yes, I had received a confirmation number on 4/28. I read the confirmation paperwork this morning, and it said I would receive info in the mail within 10 days. I didn't. I tried calling, and couldn't get through. So...this morning, I refiled and I was SHOCKED TO SAY THE LEAST when I went back in and checked and was instantly approved for benefits. No idea what happened with my first claim. I filed at exactly 5:30 a.m on 4/28 when the site was live -- had tried a few minutes prior to that and it didn't go through - and maybe my claim did not go through at all, even though I received confirmation?
Thanks so much for sharing!
CAN we refile if we previously filed improperly before 4/28? I have same case as you. Thank you!

what if you filed for unemployment during may, received benefits, but then recently opened an etsy shop, made more than $600 and go to certify for benefits again? How would i go about that? do i claim i recived monies, then click the type of employment as self-employed? Would i list Etsy or my etsy shop name as the employer name?
Hi! You should have a business license/seller's permit in that case, you would be self employed and list your business name or your own first and last name however you are registered on your business license/seller's permit documentation.
As a self employed individual, you would certify for the income the week that you receive the money ua-cam.com/video/2dK25vWH9bM/v-deo.html
@@ginnysilver I have a sellers permit! i have both my company name and full name on there though. I suppose i would put my company name then? I don't have a business license either, should i be obtaining it?
Yes! You will need to obtain a business license as well (etsy was my first business quite a while back, grossed 100k+ on that platform back then, there's a lot of room for growth there. Congrats on starting your shop)
Because you don't yet have a business license you will want everything to line up. If you have a shop name you will need to register a DBA as well along with your business license. You can't yet state your business name on your edd paperwork since it is not a registered business, so list your first and last name and your home address

Thanks a lot for all the detailed instructions. One question and concern ( I apologize in advance , if I haven't understood the main section);
In case the application is approved, how are the payments done?
Are they deposited automatically to a bank account # that is provided? There is no section in this application regarding a bank account number.
In the video, before going through the application , you talked about a Bank of America debit card. If someone doesn't have it ( just holding checking accounts in other banks), wouldn't it go through?
Thanks in advance, for your reply

Hi Ginny, I need help please. I applied for unemployment back in July. I worked 3 jobs, I’m primarily self-employed and the other 2 jobs were small part time jobs. It would only let me apply for regular unemployment and when it ran out I tried to apply for PUA for my self employments job and when I answer yes under Have you applied for unemployment in the last 12 months it informed me that I was not eligible. Thank you!
That is correct - unfortunately mixed earners are qualified under UI only if they earned $1300 or more during any one quarter in 2019. There is no work around - so sorry!
Thank you! I assumed I did not qualify for PUA as a self-employed airbnb host on 2 properties in foreign countries until I heard from 2 friends a few days ago, who have not worked for years that they applied and are receiving benefits! So I'm a late starter here. My income dropped more than $3,000 a month due to the pandemic. My questions: Does loss of business as an Airbnb host qualify me to receive PUA? How will I receive payments? Although I am a California resident, I was in Mexico when the pandemic started and have been riding it out here. I have a virtual mailbox that scans the contents of my mail. I have no way of receiving a debit card in Mexico. Thanks!
Hi! YES - if you live and pay taxes in CA you should be fine I believe and yes your air bnb income will qualify you as long as you claim it and pay taxes.
Thank you, your video help me a lot. I was confused with UI & PUA application. ):
Glad it helped!

Thanks so very much for this. I applied 03/23rd and am registered but haven't received anything. I reapplied in June, same result. EDD registered W2 for a small amount but didn't consider my net income which was substantial for self employed. I'm trying every day to speak to someone but to no avail. It feels quite desperate as I'm unable to work in my usual job as a model/actor and have three kids and a wife at home. Can you advise ? Im sure I filled in the forms as you demonstrated here - I just wish I could speak to someone there to try and figure it out.
Hi! You are so welcome!
I'm so sorry to hear that. Your first application was filed too early - self employed werent permitted to apply until 4/28. With your second application - unfortunately W2 workers earning $1300 or more in their highest earning quarter of 2019 are qualified as UI regardless of their self employment income and are not eligible to receive a different decision. I would suggest filing an appeal to have it on file in the event that legislature is developed later on to fix this issue - it is very upsetting for those in your situation and makes no sense but is how it is qualified. I would suggest applying for a PPP loan based on your self employment to cover your owner's compensation for 10 weeks

If you have never received unemployment payements from the edd, you would answer no.
Hi Ginny! Is the claim beginning date the date you are filing the claim or the last day you worked?
The first day you were UNEMPLOYED or had your job impacted
Thank you
Received you latest response about back pay for independent contractors. if I am understanding correctly I should not anticipate receiving weekly award for any dates PRIOR to the date they began allowing compensation for self-employed/independent contractors? you mention prior to 4/28; however the example you show on this website shows the claim covering UI back in March--not sure that is your claim or not a self employed claim.
INCORRECT - your back pay for a PUA claim will start as of your claim start date. PUA permits you to enter a claim start date as early as 2/2 as long as your job was effected and you will receive bckpayments for those effected weeks. Self employed individuals were allowed to apply as of 4/28 and can backdate their claims on the application to their effected date, as early as 2/2
@@ginnysilver Thank you so much! That's exactly what I thought so my initial question (perhaps not clearly stated) is: Do they usually pay for the date your claim was filed and then "GO BACK" and pay for the earlier dates further down the line--like pay for 2 weeks in May and then start paying for earlier dates in March and April?
Thank you, Thank you That worked. Don't put a comma in the net income. My programmer husband says it should have been programmed better.

So I understand it might take them some time to figure out my situation, but have you heard as long as 3 weeks? I'm wondering if I should try to reach out. Thanks.
Hi! For wait times over two weeks (the EDD advises two weeks) I would first make every possible effort to contact the EDD. After that, I would create a new login under a new email address to avoid any possible technical glitch, submit another application, and be sure to makr YES to "have you applied previously"

Hi Ginny,
Do you know how self-employed income is calculated for PUA Unemployment benefits when using a 1040 tax return to prove income?
Is Schedule C used? If so, is gross "income" or "gross profit" on Schedule C used?
If Schedule C is not used, is "total income" or "AGI" used from page 1 of the 1040 form used?
Thank you very much.
Schedule C net income

This is phenomenal but last year I worked for an actual employer and filed taxes with that employer (or from that employer) however I opened my business 01/06/2020 an LLC but I am a single member LLC. I don’t know what my options or selections would be. Obviously, a personal trainer is impacted immediately due to mandated shutdowns; there was a SIGNIFICANT drop but I still receive a little money. What would I need to provide to avoid being denied?
I am a single member LLC - you will list you previous employer as your W2 job and your most recent employer and your business and select a qualifying covid reason for closure. However you wine approved based on your 2019 work history - and if you have $1300 or more during your highest earning quarter of 2019 on a W2 you will be in UI

If you receive W2 wages - which you MUST CLAIM - good luck getting PUA as a self-employed individual. www.cnbc.com/2020/04/23/independent-contractors-may-find-less-money-in-unemployment-checks.html
Hello Ginny. Thank you for the video. Question. If you are still getting a little bit of work here and there but nothing like you should, Do you need to fill something out? And if you do, do you know if they account for your expenses with the money brought in? I hope this question makes sense.
YES - every two weeks you will need to certify that you are still unemployed and it is here where you will claim any income you earned. I have a video on it here: ua-cam.com/video/7nPsSNE7Yjs/v-deo.html . For me, I am an LLC with a separate business checking account. I am claiming my owner's draw (the funds which leave the business account and are moved into a personal account) as my pay - that way it is not the gross income but rather my actual pay and is traceable in accounting easily.
@@ginnysilver Thank you! =)

Sorry this questions was bumped in spam - I believe it has since been answered with you in another thread
At the time of PUA application, I provided all earnings received from doing business and the earnings were deposited in my business checking LLC account. I am considering to report my owner's draw on my PUA weekly certification. Your thoughts?
Hi! Your application requires you to report your NET earnings, not your gross earnings so it sounds like you made an error there. Net earnings is your take home pay (what you take out in owners draws, in your case) as it is shown on your schedule C of your 2019 income taxes - you will need to send the EDD a message to correct this if you have made this error. Use the CONTACT US feature in the top of your UI ONLINE
YES - if you pay yourself out with an owner's draw to a personal account, you will need to claim this income on your certifications.
I will make the correction. Mahalo!🤙🙏😀

In short...do you coach people through their application and what are your rates? It is not a fast or tidy process but I did get approved even after my information was misplaced. I had to appeal a denial & wait hours on the phone & put together a process that worked for my situation. But I'm no Ginny Silver.
Hi! I don't offer coaching for that, but I do have a video on my channel home where you can see me walk through the application as self employed
Hi Ginny, I was filed my claim in middle of April for UI because there is no PUA application at that time, after I watched your video how to file step by step for PUA, my second time to file a new claim was in May-09 this almost 3 weeks till now I still can't access to UI Online, I had a very difficulty to call the Technical Support, if I try to create an new email address to file new claim again as you mentioned in your video that I can be back date it's that right ? because I been lost a lot of times since April, Please help and advise me how to do I was self employed, Thank you very much !
Hi! First make every possible attempt to contact the EDD. try this method to reach out: BEST METHOD TO REACH A PERSON AT EDD: 1-833-978-2511
Thank you to Felise Garcia for sharing your method
"First, I finally got through to the 833-978-2511 #. This line is the newly established helpline open from 8 am to 8 pm...so I waited until 6:30 pm to call assuming most people have given up after business hours. It took about 10 trys, but if you press #1 for English and then #0 immediately after, you can just try over and over until you reach the hold line. I was on hold for about 30 minutes before getting through."
After that, you may want to try re applying under a new email to avoid technical difficulty
Hi. Probably late in doing this, but I am stuck on the type of work question. I have a terrarium small business where I go to various flea markets and sell them. I don't know exactly what type of work I should answer. Please advise. Thanks.
Hi! I don't know what is available in their options, but I would try searching for any type of floral design or artisan that fits
@@ginnysilver Thanks
Hi Ginny,
Sorry for bothering you. I made a mistake on clicking no for the answer to question, “Are you unemployed as a direct result of a recent disaster for example (COVID-19) in California?” Is there a way I can correct my mistake or reapply?
Oh shoot! That will disqualify you - there isn't, aside form calling in and asking a claims rep. If it were me, I would file another application through a different email address and make sure you select YES to 'have you filed for unemployment previously' to claim the other application.
Thank you for your response Ginny. I highly appreciate it. I will do that and give you an update.
@@ecwinters3142 good luck
Thank you for this Ginny. Very thorough and well explained. here's my question- My recent application I filed on May 13. I know it went through because I have a confirmation number. The website said 5-7 days, but three weeks later I have not gotten any reply. Also, the UI online doe not allow me to file a new claim due to this existing one. Do you how long does it take for them to get an answer, or to file a new one? Thanks again. You're awesome!- Manu
Hi! So sorry to hear that. I would first make every possible attempt to contact, you can try this method: BEST METHOD TO REACH A PERSON AT EDD: 1-833-978-2511

After that, I would craete a new login under a new email address to avoid a technical glitch and send in another application. Be sure to check YES to "Have you filed for unemployment previously"
@@ginnysilver thank you Ginny and Felisa for your replies. I tried at least 30 times but couldn't get through. After dialing 1 then 0, the line says to check back later, then the line drops.
@@ginnysilver I will try this one Ginny, and hopefully it works. Thanks!
@@ginnysilver I tried this and successfully submitted a new claim. Praying for quick and positive result. Thank you, Ginny. Will update soon.
I would never lie just as they would never lie to me. They have my word.
Ginny what if i was working self employed but i was shutdown in march because of corvid -19 but i was working as well for a employer how do i file ?
HI Ginny. Do you mean I should apply now to PUA as a new claim and leave the UI claim as filed?
Hi Allen! I don't believe that the EDD will allow you to create a new claim while you have an unprocessed claim in its queue. You could either contact the EDD to cancel your claim/receive assistance from them on your question or wait it out and see if it happens to be approved - not knowing your financial situation, I can't say what is best for you - if you are in need of income quickly I would call the EDD directly to get some help as quickly as possible.
Very informative Ginny! Thanks for doing this! What if you own a small S-Corp and you want to file? My corporation is already in the EDD system and ask for my employer info. It is a 1-person operation and I am my "boss". My work is event based (I do conferences and meeting consulting) and all of it has been cancelled. I don't have normal work hours. So how do I list that when they ask for info?
Hi! As an S-Copr you would pay yourself out as an employee, which means you should also issue yourself a W2. You would list yourself as an employee, your company's info, your average work hours per week, etc. You would NOT state that you are self employed, since you are an employee of your company and taxed as such.
Keep in mind that as you are an employee, your will fall under UI and will likely not be subject to retroactive pay since UI applications have been open throughout the entire pandemic and available to apply, as opposed to PUA claims which receive retroactive pay due to their delay in availability.
I have questions. 1. How do I file? I am a gig worker. I had some income from W-2 jobs in 2019. I currently am taking paid family leaves from a W-2 employer. I am impacted by COVID-19. 2. How do I answer the question #7 Under Availability Information. At the end it says "If you are impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Click No" but you answered "Yes". The 1st attempt in March was $0 benefit. I have not heard back from EDD for the 2nd attempt in early April but seem like I am able to reapply it online. Thanks
I do not believe you would be able to receive BOTH paid family leave and unemployment benefits. You'll need to call in on that one: ua-cam.com/video/m5yef1Mby4c/v-deo.html
Hi Ginny I hope this question finds you. BTW you are very amazing person to answer all q's. I filed my claim for benefits and received my award about 10 days later. Have since been waiting over 2 weeks now I cant check status I dont have account number. I tried refiling as u suggested with different email address got to the page right before it asks for DL info and it said I can't file for new claim at this time. Should I have answered something different. I cant get past through my portal to get staatus
Hi! Don't refile if you have been approved. The next step would be certifying for your available weeks. If you can't login online and you haven't received papers in the mail, you can try telecert to see if anything has populated there. If not you'll need to call in and get help - use my how to call video on my channel
Thanks for your information! If I applied Edd from June and get approved, is that possible to reapply from March which i did not apply?
If you made a mistake you would have to call them.
You can request a correction in your start date here: askedd.edd.ca.gov/
