Mike I really appreciate your videos and content and your enthusiasm for the contemporary Genesis/Mega Drive scene. I also have purchased everything PSCD has released and they have always delivered their products, as described, in a timely manner.
All that being said; this is the, not second, but third time PSCD has been involved in some sort of dispute with a game creator. There was the whole ordeal with Hunter Girls. Before that, Fight for Vengence was released successfully but the game's creator also expressed grievances with PSCD. It's gotten to the point where any reasonable person is going to start wondering if one of two things is happening here:
Either A: PSCD games is not doing a good job of vetting the people they collaborate with or B: there is actually something wrong with the way they handle business with the creators of these games. I really do hope it's A. I love the company and really do want to see PSCD continue to publish games. Hell, I want as many companies as possible to continue making these games and see this scene thrive.
Both parties need to come to the table and make a good faith negotiation. It really is in the interest of everyone, including PSCD and the creator. It's also in the interest of the whole contemporary Genesis/Mega Drive scene. Stuff like this makes people lose faith in not just these two parties, but the smaller creators who make these products as a whole.
Pretty scummy from the original publisher just to take the money. This is one reason I don't back things on Kickstarter because there is no security for the people involved.

Me too- oh boy! The developer resurfaced recently- he did a podcast in German- he was on the Saber Rider facebook page and took a bit of flack from backers- he has gone radio silent again.--- In fairness, he may have had a mental breakdown previously- reading between the lines but yeah- he could transfer rights of star saber over to backers and release all assets and game builds to us- that would go some ways towards placating the backers.

Worked on Piersolar, when asked later down the road that if the game made profit (assuming at the time WM was supposedly breaking even) if I wanted compensation, I replied "yes"... Never saw one dime, simply was only given one copy of the game, that's IT!
On the Kickstarter page, the OG publisher is claiming that PSCD did get their money (though they have not done anything at this point to prove that assertion).
These crowdfunding hustlers give all indie games a bad name and make indie development even more difficult
People can be arseholes. Using genuine, good devs in a vulnerable situation for selfish financial gain is deplorable. Hopefully, the community gets behind these guys when the game becomes available. And good for you, Mike, for using your platform to inform people of their situation. 👏
There are some real d1cks out there.
I would honestly rather see retro game releases stick with the homebrew / free scene. Where the games are made out of developer's love for the platforms. Just check out Hayato's Journey, for the Genesis/MD. It's an excellent game, and 100% free (for the rom), and the dev didn't ask for a penny. There were some other incredible releases too, as well as others in the works: such as, Final Fight MD, The Simpsons, Castlevania Symphony of the Night, Castlevania IV, RoboCop, and much more!
That sucks. I really feel for PSCD as the work they do is stellar, and they always deliver. Game Energy should be ashamed of themselves, but sadly, a few rotten apples always spoil the bunch, and many get tarred with the same brush. I think id rather buy straight from PSCD themselves from now on.
I think the "Sanctions" is the reason why they had to go through Energy studio. Also When it comes to Watermelon I know they will deliver it will just take them probably 6 to 8 years to do it.

Good thing you mentioned Watermelon. I remember they got all the praise for the first one they released in 2010 ''Pier Solar'' but the second one ''Paprium'' that scamming company just kept everybody's money and stopped mailing out copies of the game. No offence to anyone here but I would never back any project on Kickstarter.
Are there people who did not get Paprium? I backed it and got mine. It took a few years but I did get my copy of the game and it is amazing. I thought they were all shipped out.
@@malcolmar No, they haven't all shipped out at all. As the years went on, they took longer and longer to ship until they just ceased altogether. I never ordered the game but there are a few videos of Watermelon's updates from over the years on UA-cam still floating around and reading the comments on those videos from people who are still waiting for their order. SegalordX backed it and he never got his copy, that's why he won't review the game or talk about it on his channel. I'd say Watermelon spent everybody's money on themselves and just made up some bullshit excuse as to why they couldn't afford to mail out everybodys order. As Retro Gamer Boy said at the end of this video, that unfortunately there are some bad eggs in the carton that decide to go rogue in the industry and keep everybody's money and not ship the game out to those that ordered it. That game Paprium came out in 2017, it was ordered far back as early as 2014/2015 and it's 2024 and Watermelon still haven't shipped out all orders.

I haven’t done kickstarter since I backed mighty no. 9 and NEVER got my backer reward! It absolutely sucks. I’m so sorry for everyone who got duped. 😡

Thank you for sharing this. Kickstsrter full of scammers unfortunately. Shame for the actually developers. But why did they go through this company in the first place. Just fund the developer directly would be a great option

yup 😢... of course, i think bad planning can turn a "real gamer" into "scammer", i think(like watermelon).
There's plenty of assets that need quantifying before one knows how costly a production will be...(imagine planning before hand how many music tracks, and the lenght of each, that the final version of a game will have 😅).

Yeah that's the biggest scam so far. Kickstarter needs to refigure the program so backers can get refunds on false projects
@PSCDGames been 3 years over due. Just keeps stringing along. Not sure how they will be able to fulfill the physical copies as boards and materials have went up significantly.
@PSCDGames it is a schmup. Had alot of hype for a indie dev. MegaCat was already advertising it as coming soon a year ago. Nothing but crickets now. Updates every 4 to 6 months. Always and excuse. I think I'm done with Kickstarter stuff after projects pulling plugs after they get paid.
Didn't something similar happened to the dev team of a game called Meifumado?
They are from Belarus, and what seems to have happened is that they can't get the money from KS because of the economical sanctions against Russia and allies.
They have told the whole thing in the Steam forums.
Considering Meifumado didn't nearly turn out to have what they promised on their KS page according to reviews on the game I wouldn't be surprised if whatever they said on Steam forums is just their scapegoat.
A while back someone mentioned it to me and it caught my attention (obviously, it does *look* great), so I bought Gun Rage, the other game they developed. I can't stress this enough, It was *absolute trash.*
So yeah, pretty sure Old Bit Studio pulled a fast one on all their KS backers.
No idea what's going on with this case though. The fact that PSCD Games YT page was taken down seems to suggest Game Energy copyright struck it to oblivion... but PSCD having promoted an unofficial RE demake for the Genesis seems super dodgy of them too so 🤷♂ (not to defend Capcom here)
Garbage and money hungry people are everywhere, but they do not belong in this passion driven hobby. I'm going to ask for refund and will for sure buy the game from them, like I did with Hunter Girls. Maybe next time they could just open a preorder on their site.

Hey Mike, when you try to go to the link that you posted with PSCD Games, which has Mr. Sven explain everything, it now has this error: "This video is no longer available because the UA-cam account associated with this video has been terminated." Not only is Game Energy Studio ignoring all the requests for refunds on the Kickstarter comments, now this happens. What on God's green earth is going on?
Kickstarter told me they can't give a refund and to ask the people that started the campaign. Figures...

Kickstarter needs to communicate clearly the projects which are run by intermediaries.
I'm filling out the form, but what am I supposed to put in the final field where it says, "Please return the money using the following details"? Do I just say "Refund it back to my credit card" or "Send to my paypal address"?
I think it's unsafe to write my credit card number there.

I used to back games on Kickstarter in the past such as Mighty nº9 and Bloodstained, but both had issues with cancellations and delays. I don't think Kickstarter is reliable at all.

The pscd guys are uploading in their Instagram all the messages of the kickstarter at it's terrible how those guys are trying to spin it as if the development team are the ones that kept the money, and they say they can still publish the game...
I have bought it digital on my xbox??? The game is finished why dont they send the cadriges to their backers. Without them the game wouldn't exist!!!

Maybe people should file complaints with Steam? If Game Energy Studio's games get delisted from Steam for unethical business practices, maybe that will make them do the right thing and transfer the funds to the proper developers as promised.

@@whosayswhoof6381 not quite convinced now by zpf after seeing the Eartion footage, zpf is looking like a bit more style over substance (hopefully I'm wrong) whilst Yuzo's new game looks like the classic arcade style shoot em up from the early 90's.

It's a real shame, but I stopped backing projects on Kickstarter (and other platform that have a far worse record when it comes to this) for years now. Had my fair share of negative experiences and am done with that concept.

I got emails from every game I've backed, such as The Cursed Knight, ZPF, etc., but no email for Cyber Mission when I searched. When I log into Kickstarter, it shows I pledged 60 EUROS. I'm curious if Game Energy Studio planned on stealing our money from the very beginning with no emails being sent out to backers. Or maybe their was just an email glitch, in my instance?

Because this is not the first time they have deceived people. They've done it with at least two projects. And you still believe them? We are committed to see this project through. You will get your games."
What a load of idiocy, PSCD deserve the bad reputation. From now only will only back games if they prove they know what they are doing.

Why does Watermelon get such a bad rap when he made one of the best beat 'em ups of the entire 16-bit generation for Genesis fans?
I mean, it's not like it's vapourware of something. This is a legit game of the highest quality, and it got completed and released as far as I can tell.
So, what's the part that's causing the major issues for everyone here. And, importantly, what's the full story behind it. It certainly isn't that he's just some douche scam artist who pretended he was going to make a game and didn't but still took all the money and ran off. No one would go to the length of actually creating one of the best Genesis games out there just to scam people and that's all there is to the full and complete story. It takes a colossal amount of effort to make a full and complete game, especially one of this clearly all round AAA quality. And some people do in fact have the game as far as I'm aware. So the real situation has to be far more complex and nuanced than he's just a scammer.
Also, isn't this the same guy who released the simlary great Pier Solar for Genesis too.
There's two high quality very real and finished games there that I personally wish had SNES versions, I'll tell you that for free.
So something about this whole demonizing Watermelon situation just seems very strange and off to me.
Because he has not sent the games to a large number of people who paid. I still do not have my copy despite paying £230. And their communication is terrible.

The guy made and finished one of the best games for the console, which patenly took years and unbelievable effort, and there's literally zero chance the story is as simple as he did all of that and then just bumped people and cheated them and himself out a lot of goodwill and likely extra sales and money totally randomly for no good reason.
It doesn't make any sense. And I feel like there's a big part of this picture missing here. I mean, I dunno, is it possible there's maybe actually more to this story and there's some legit reason why things took a strange turn. Like--and I could totally understand this being a thing--some complete and utter deranged tools in the community abused him so much that he just said **** you to them all or something. And basically everyone got shafted because of a bunch of plonkers who couldn't just let the guy do what he clearly wanted to do and needed to do in order fully deliver on every promise here ultimately.
Note. I have no clue of the full story, so I'm just shooting in the dark here because the current "he's a bad guy who's scamming everyone and that's all there is to it" narrative just doesn't sit right we me.
Again, ain't no sane person creating an entire best-in-class Genesis game and then simply walking away from it and all that means out of nowhere. There's more going on here than meets the eye, and I feel like he's maybe being made entirely the scapegoat when it simply cannot be that simple. That's just my take anyway.
PS. I'm sure I read somewhere about his payment accounts getting closed and access to all his funds blocked or something--maybe it was paypal--which would make managing something like this pretty dang unfeasible and possibly even impossible at a certain point. So, if I'm recalling a real thing here, what was behind that for example?

There are still backers of the original kickstarter that didn't receive their reward which is not ok.
This watermaleon guy seems to be a talented developer. I cannot deny that. But that is not an excuse for his terrible management skills.
This guy needs someone above him to keep him in line or he will go of the deepend again.
I had heard about his issues before. Fun fact every person I have seen review Paprium used another persons game to make the review since none of them got their own yet.
Because of that I decided not to back this kickstarter and I'm glad for it.
These god awful communication issues are not acceptable. I will also stay away from anything Mega Cat related. I backed Phantom Gear back in 2019 and expected a fully developed game in 2020. It's been to long now and every 3 months I get an update that they added 2 frames of animation to a backround or a character.
I'm so sick of this.
@@EoR_2B4GOT10 On a related note, I just learned they were apparently developing a SNES game codenamed Project N at one point, which looked like it could have been a pretty impressive RPG title with the few screens and such that were shown. I'm very disappointed that appears to be dead, especially given how talented these guys clearly are and what I can only imagine they might have been able to do the system if they push at much time and effort into Project N as their two Genesis games. At least Genesis owners got both Pier Solar and Paprium.
There's a fool born every day, I guess. There are hundreds of pages of forum posts at Sega16 detailing all of fonzie's sins. Go have a look. Imho, it mostly boils down to just really poor money management and the guy can't get out of his own way. People around him tried for years and years to limit those tendencies, but he pushed pretty much everyone around him away or fired them. I don't think anyone except Luis stayed until the end. It's not worth my time to go into detail, but look into the sham "release party" fonzie threw that cost like, $10k, and had a fake cartridge to show off the then-nonexistent "prototype", or look into how the release cartridge of paprium doesn't even work on all original sega consoles (wouldn't that suck to fork over that kind of dough, to realize once it arrives that it doesn't work on your model 1 genesis) and that's not even to mention the absolute pettiness that went into fonzie coding the game specifically not to work on the Mega Sg and other similar consoles, or the very very unhinged letter about this that he included in the game's box. Or how about the choice to jack the price up for hundreds more dollars after sales were opened back up (sales were closed for something like four years because PayPal considered it a scam... think about that for a minute) Again, there's a laundry list of things. I don't have the time or the energy to write em up, but do yourself a favor and do at least a little bit of research on it...
At this point, anyone continuing to get scammed by fonzie only has themselves to blame. At the very least, as someone who gave fonzie the benefit of the doubt for about 8+ years, it's very frustrating to see people continuing to enable his kind of behavior. Even if he's not a scam artist, the way he behaves and treats others who ask for *any* amount of communication is enough to convince me that he's not a developer worth supporting.
