I believe it adds strength to the book buy adding a second means of attaching signatures. Many folks will not stitch the headband to every signature. I tend to stitch to every one. If the stitching on the spine fails then the headband could keep the signature in place. I am an amateur book binderand this is only my opinion but it has served me well
The rayon embroidery thread vs. the cotton embroidery thread by French supplier DMC: I agree with you that the rayon does not work well. My reasons are that the rayon threads are too loose thus the strands have a tendency to overlap each other resulting in a messy look. BUT I have had a lot of success with the cotton type, mainly because the cotton DMC #5 is wound together tight, which creates a cleaner/neater looking loop. It's better controlled than the rayon. Can you tell me your reasons for not liking the cotton embroidery thread even less than the rayon? I'm very interested to know. Thank you for your time.
I am sorry I missed your question and my reply is so late. I prefer the silk over the cotton because the cotton looks fuzzy and the silk looks clean. I had never considered tightening the twist on the cotton. Than may solve the problem. A different brand may solve that as well. Thanks for your insight.
That is a great idea. I will try that next time. Thank you.
Thanks for the tutorial. I can find no other headband tutorial on youtube except yours.

@johnacsyen You are very welcome. I hope you found the instruction clear. Enjoy your binding.
A close-up would be helpful. Thanks
