Whose idea was it to put Carol Burnett, Tim Curry, AND Bernadette Peters together in the same musical number? That can't be safe! How did the world not completely implode on itself by that amount of pure awesomeness concentrated in one spot?
This song should appear on more "Best Villain Songs" lists, partly just because it involves one of the most respected comediennes ever, one of the most respected women on Broadway, and the actor who'd get my vote as being THE best villain- actor in cinematic history, all in the same song. Dance, Curry, dance! LOL @ Hannigan crashing into the same door- frame twice, on the way out of it and on the way back in!
Well, the 1999 version actually has an actual plot and this one is like an old sitcom (which I don't hate I actually love sitcoms). But in the 1999 version you can actually feel something to the characters and there's so much emotion that I love it. But I still love both versions
I didn’t realize that Rooster is Miss Hannigan’s brother until I was in a production of Annie when I was 14. As a kid, I always thought she his weird sorta side chick without even knowing what a side chick was.
Even though this is a classic villain song, this whole scene actually reveals that there is a good side to Miss Hannigan. She has been "sitting" on the information that Annie's parents are dead for many years. She could have used that info to destroy Annie's dream of her folks coming to get her. Miss Hannigan has never told this to Annie and I think she in some ways admires Annie's spirit and optimism through everything life has thrown at her.
Watching this as a child I never appreciated this number. Now it's one of my favorites in the whole musical. Bernadette, Tim, and Carol are so fabulous!
Did you know that during the original filming of this number that it was outside with lots of extras? Thank God the powers that be decided that didn't work. Also, after the original filming Carol Burnett had plastic surgery to have a stronger chin/jawline which she told the powers that be when they asked her to come back to film this number. They told her that she'd go into the closet as she was and come out with her new chin.
This was always my favorite scene in the movie. I guess I just like bad guys. But seriously, these three are so great together, and the dance itself is really well-choreographed. I learned later on that they filmed an entirely different scene of them singing "Easy Street" that didn't work, so they shot this scene as a reshoot. They definitely made the right choice as what ended up in the film is just perfect!
Yep. It was supposed to be a far more grandiose number that took place on the streets of New York & reportedly cost more than $1 million to film (Carol has always said, coming from television, she was surprised at the cavalier wasting of money during filming). I think right after the film wrapped production, it was decided to reshoot it as the simpler, more effective scene that we now know. I wonder if the original number still exists & could possibly be included on a later DVD release as a special feature.
