I think it's a great asset to Toronto and helps people avoid Pearson airport that gets congested.
It is a great airport it would be idiotic to close it
But the planes that can land there are not supported by their manufacturers, like the Bombardier q400. Billy Bishop will need to accommodate larger aircraft to be useful in the next decade. That will make people living near the airport exposed to more noise.
@@elliotjordan2326This is 100% false. The Dash 8-400 has been operating safely from there for over 18 years and is still being supported by Dehavilland Canada, which took over the model from Bombardier. And all new narrow body turbo fan airliners are quieter than the Dash 8 and some are capable of operating there safely as well.
@@rileydkalesnikoff6728 it would be brilliant to close it if the plan is to sell the land to developers…
It's a top ten airport. Fix the lease fiasco first, and just do the work. 🙂❤🇨🇦✈
Keep it open, but, top 10 out of what? 14? :)
There are actually about 650 airports in Canada with about 130 of those being passenger airports. So, Billy Bishop being in the top 10 is pretty significant.
The Island airport is a blessing! I used to use it frequently between Ottawa - Toronto and boy, it sure saved a lot of time a hassle! Sometimes I could even WALK from the airport to my meetings! Never give up that airport!
Billy Bishop is the best airport on the continent. Beyond the efficiency of a more nimble smaller airport compared the bloated mess of Pearson, there’s few airports that are a short walk from a public transit catchment of millions of people. It took decades just to build a half-baked train link to Pearson, whereas Billy Bishop is a right next to GO trains, subways, streetcars, bike paths, or just a short sidewalk trip. Classic Toronto city hall shooting themselves in the foot, it’s embarrassing.
Shutting down the island airport will make Toronto traffic even worse.
This is simple, you want to close Billy Bishop and use it for something else, then build a second international airport in Pickering. Ohhh you don't want to do that, then improve Billy Bishop to take jets. Pick you battles. People who don't want Billy Bishop, a few Torontonians living on the island and waterfront, or Pickering most of that city. We need governments to show leadership, put on their big boy/girl pants and get shit done for the majority not placate a few.
Not jets. No matter what no jets please
Thank you for your reasonable and common sense comment. Everything you say I agree with.
I agree. There was a trial period where the cargo airport in Hamilton had internation passenger planes in the early 2000s. Why not expand the Hamilton airport?
@@kmm1863all modern narrow body turbo fan airliners are objectively quieter than the Dash 8. There is no valid argument to prohibit operation there.
lol wut you don’t even need to add jets, that’s such a ridiculous false dichotomy. It’s already a fantastic airport with turboprops.
This is the plan: close the airport, sell the land to developers, collect kickbacks and secure place on the board of directors.
Yup. Same plan for every piece of public land in toronto.
Jets like the airbus A220 and Embraer E190 Family of aircraft. Are actually quieter than the current dash-8 flying out of that airport right now.
Obviously Toronto City staff are not into flying - are they jealous that all the executives get those perks?
Didn't the video state a cost of about $65million - what's that, the cost of an aircraft?
Only people who want it closed is wealthy waterfront condo owners and sleep useless city bureaucrats
Expand the airport. Bring back 33/15! Build a bigger terminal. Extend the lease. Actually just sell all the land to Porter.
Keep YTZ operating! It’s a great alternative to Pearson and creates many jobs
Only senseless people want it closed!!!! Let’s extend the runway.. and serve people better!!!!
But the planes that can land there are not supported by their manufacturers, like the Bombardier q400. Billy Bishop will need to accommodate larger aircraft to be useful in the next decade. That will make people living near the airport exposed to more noise.
@@elliotjordan2326 modern crj jets are quieter than turboprops I’m not sure what everyone is conserved about
@@bps9651 um, ok. What are the chances the air lines are Billy Bishop will buy these "crj jets" instead of for common and more reliable standard airline planes? Pretty slim.
Porter wanted to years ago but was shot down by the city.
@@elliotjordan2326Firstly they aren’t not supported. Secondly if there isn’t dash 8s anymore people switch to ATR.
Keep it open. Pearson cant take any more volume
Pearson is bursting at the seams. Billy Bishop is taking a sizable load off of Pearson, and doing so with a very convenient airport. The Q400s are already super quiet, but the next generation of jets (Embraer E2 series and Airbus A220) are even quieter and can land at short runways. Just a small extension to the runway at Billy Bishop will allow these quiet jets to operate from the airport.
But I have ZERO expectations on future governments to even touch the idea of letting jets fly there again in an actionable manner.
Closing Edmonton's municipal airport has worked out really well. Big piles of dirt. A couple of leftover hangars have been burnt. Restricted travel to the downtown of a provinces capital. Airmedivac ambulance travel has been extended. Air museum hangar for sale.
I agree that this airport should be left open and expanded. It's the ninth busiest airport in the country. They also need to allow commuter jet traffic. People complain about the traffic in the city of Toronto. People could fly into City of Toronto for a business meeting then fly out...or fly into Pearson Airport take a cab adding to the traffic.
It’s the same braindead bad actors that have been calling for the airport to be shut down for the last 20 years (No Jets TO et al). Buttonville is permanently closed, Downsview is permanently closed. Just for general aviation and corporate traffic ALONE (no scheduled commercial flights into these airports), the GTA needs the island airport. The value of having a secondary airport for a city this populated cannot be understated. Pearson is a nightmarish experience for many, plus it does not have the infrastructure to support any kind of meaningful expansion at the moment (hours spent on the ground waiting for gates, bussing people to and from the infield terminals- I used to work for the airports authority that runs Pearson). It is critical that we invest in the continual improvement of the island airport.
The whole no jets thing is ridiculous. Turboprops are louder than modern jets anyway
Yup. Toronto trying to be like New York of Canada but with only one airport is a non-starter. Every super major metropolitan area has access to multiple airports.
Toronto needs to wake up and let Billy Bishop grow. It’ll be great for the economy and all these useless people who are in counsel and live along the waterfront are constantly making up excuses not to let the airport grow. Transport Canada already approved the runway extensions years ago. Both runways should be extended to allow the safety aspect to be there and have the quieter jets to operate on the island. It’ll definitely give more options for Toronto to choose which airport to go to and the destinations it’ll unlock. Replacing the airport for a park or recreational centre is a complete joke.
Billy Bishop Airport should facilitate and add UFO Landing Pads. With the increase UFO sightings it would be nice gesture by Toronto to make the light years travellers feel welcome…The economic spinoff would be huge.
It's time for a Billy Bishop casino😂
They should have allowed Porter to operate quieter jets (A220) at the Island. Now they just put more schedule at Pearson. Same group of ppl prob complain about how bad and crowded Pearson is.
A perfect example of just how business unfriendly Toronto, Ontario and Canada have become.
@@adamhusky1364 which business? Developers can’t wait for the airport to be closed and the land sold to them…
What possible better use could that space be used for than for what it does now and that is letting X amount of people avoid that incompetent insane asylum run and operated by inmates otherwise known as Pearson.
Don’t do the stupid thing Chicago did and close their downtown airport. It’s a great thing for the city that thousands of people benefit from every year. Also why do you want to turn it into a park? The Islands are already a giant park and the airport is like an nth of it. Also, the Air France crash that’s being quoted was mainly caused by pilot error.
If planes go electric or flying drone cars catch on... welcome the the perfect place to fly from!
Air Canada has about 30 electric commuter jets on order. Those would be perfect for short hops to Ottawa, Montreal, Windsor or Boston.
Do the work, stop letting a vocal minority bogg everything down. If it is a good business case sign the lease.
When times have been the toughest and inflation is skyrocketed.... Ppl really want to have the 9th busiest airport ripped down for recreational use.... Is this a joke?????
Wait…the guy who teaches aviation business at McGill thinks the airport is valuable and should stay? Crazy.
My plane slip at this runway when we landing
Yea, let's do Kia Tak airport again.... come on people... keep it an Airport, if you make it a park, then you've got the cleanup costs of the Aviation fuel that's leeked all over the ground & oils, etc... then, let's raise the taxes after that, makes total sense...
But the planes that can land there are not supported by their manufacturers, like the Bombardier q400. Billy Bishop will need to accommodate larger aircraft to be useful in the next decade. That will make people living near the airport exposed to more noise.
Oh Toronto, gawd bless your cotton socks.
Air France 358
the pronoun ppl opposing everything. fix the lease and allow jets. lets leave the olivia chows to renaming things and put some leadership in toronto for the good of the city.
Olivia, dont be capitalist! Who cares about money? Let's build a park with plenty of bike lanes that we can only use 4 or 5 months/year
ALL THE SHITE PEOPLE DO IN DOWNTOWN COMPLAIN ABOUT EVERYTHING LIKE THEY COMPLAIN ABOUT THE NIGHTCLUB HAVING LOUD MUSIC AND NOW THE AIRPORT
They were complaining that downtown workers were not in the office for their overpriced food too.
At 4000 feet there is absolutely NO WAY that Bishop can be used for jets without major expansion. Other overseas cities have so utilized close in city airports, but 6000 foot is the mnimum and there can't be obstructions on either end.
Look up London City airport (EGLC). A very busy jet served urban airport. Just under 5000’ of runway. Very similar to what YTZ could get with RESA.
this making me laugh .. who needs new ferries if the airport is gone & now they say airport gone in 33 ... why spend all that money on ferries I dont even think they need when a million dollar bridge is now possible ... dumb politics
Would make a nice location for the Toronto Indycar GP!
Fix and extend the runway but slot limit the airport too. No flights after 10 PM or earlier than 7 AM. People need to sleep as much as people need to fly!
As of right now, between midnight and 745 am. So almost 8 am. As for the night, no flights are really scheduled after 10 pm, but the two hours is there for buffer for returning and delayed flights. I have had flights bumped to Pearson bc my return could not make it back before midnight.
The airport has been there since the 1940s. Anyone who buys a condo/home near the airport does so KNOWING there's an airport there. So either STFU or move to where there isn't an airport. Pretty simple. Let the airport LIVE!
Ask china to help. Simple
Billy Bishop should be closed. Our beautiful waterfront is spoiled by the constant thrum/pollution from these noisy aircraft. This is no place for an airport.
What beautiful waterfront? You mean the water front you have to walk past all the homeless people to? It’s fine the way it is. Closing the airport doesn’t change anything practically and only causes job losses and makes Toronto less competitive as a business destination.
Stop it. Toronto is a big city and deserves big city options. Not everyone wants to be stuck in lineups for hours at Pearson.
Close the airport and turn it into a park. We have a train to Pearson now. The island airport is completely unnecessary.
I doubt Pearson can accommodate thousands of more passengers a day for smaller planes to Ottawa, Montreal, New York, Chicago, Boston, Halifax and DC. There's already a massive park on the island. We get it, lefties hate planes
No, we need an alternative since Pearson is known to be very unreliable plus, tickets for airlines are much cheaper via Billy Bishop as the airport fees is lower than Pearson. We already have Ontario place just a Kilometer away that will have park space for Torontonians.
@@eknoorsinghM So what?
Most people who fly regularly are either well off or business people.
Both can afford slightly higher fees.
Yet they are the ones whining the most over this.
The vast majority of people only fly occasionally.
Close Billy Bishop.
☮
Is there not already lots of parks surrounding Billy Bishop? You're arguing that you already have access to Pearson so no sense in having this airport so let's turn it into another park in the middle of many other existing parks... Billy Bishop is quick and reliable, always my go to when it's an option in or out of Toronto.
@@McRocketHaving an extra airport provides access to more flight options and therefore a bit more competition between the airlines which can drive down pricing. It's better to keep Bishop open to allow for a more competitive market for more affordable fares.
