It really is a spectacular camera. It's the b-cam for my GH5, and honestly, if not for the extra crop in 4K, I very easily could pass by with two of these instead. It's kind of a shame that people are becoming more and more obsessed with full frame, because these little cameras and the features packed into them, combined with the price (I bought mine new a year ago for $850 US, which I still consider a steal based on the features), really are fantastic. That's not to say full frame is a bad thing or that it doesn't have my interest, but still. Thankfully Fujifilm and (hopefully) Panasonic are still advancing these smaller formats at competitive prices and advanced features.
Love your reviews and photography. Calm and unbiased, thoughtful reviews without any histrionics is always appreciated, and becoming more rare on UA-cam. It would be interesting to know how many pictures you've taken of that pup, lol.
The colors you get from your photographs are always amazing. I'd love to see how you process a color photo to get those dramatic colors. Keep up the great work!
I picked up this camera a couple months back and haven't looked back since! One of the best decisions I made. If you know what you're getting and can live with the limitations(of which there are barely one) than you're in for a treat
Love my G85. The weight is key. Matched with a Leica 12-60 the auto focus at 1080 works very well and the lens is parfocal which is mandatory for video. Nice presentation.
You got my camera! I love all this stuff but also the weather sealing and with the g85 the unlimited recording time. I had the g7 and the g85 fixed every nitpick I had with it.
The unlimited recording time (1 big file) is indeed it's BIG selling point!!! Seems to be the only vid cam of that range having this feature. For the uninitiated (in Western Europe), all vid cams will record in blocks of 29'59". So when filming interviews or lectures lasting more than 30', you'll have a short gap in between files.
I had to look at the title again to see if the review was the G7 or the G80/85. Probably just me, getting old. Once again your video is so relaxing and informative. Watching with my Sennheiser headphones the music and vocal audio is excellent! I always enjoy your photos, too, esp.of little Gunpowder. She seems so blase about it all.
I LOVE that you brought up the re-cropping ability when shooting 3:2 in RAW. It seems such a small thing, but I miss that flexibility in post processing immensely since switching to Fuji.
I'm becoming more and more interested in Micro 4/3. It's a terrific platform. Image quality is good enough - but only just. I think that press photographers would be wise to consider replacing their bigger cameras with one like this. The idea that mobile phones can match dedicated cameras is a joke. Despite what some people say, M4/3 is a professional format. But don't expect to make huge enlargements. For people who primarily shoot film but who want a digital kit as well, I think that a M4/3 kit is an ideal complement. The kit is very compact and it can be fairly cheap, unless you want the most modern bodies.
Have one of these for video, but I’m becoming more and more interested in using it for stills. I also have a Nikon D750 with some prime lenses, but the smaller size and weight of my G85 is all the more compelling.
Owning different gear I am still fascinated by the good value of my g85. Not expensive, fully articulated screen,, stab for video and low light pics, good quality till 6400 isos (no need more) compact, good autofocus for pics (less for video but minor issue) large amounts of lenses and good customizable buttons, weather proof. Really compared to new and expensive cameras (and the price so cheap) really an almost ultimate camera. First time I don't feel treated only as a money spender
With you on that. Just a remarkable image. It's no surprise how many video shooters use Panny MFT cameras. They wouldn't care about the features if that image quality weren't there.
This is the camera I recommend to most people, it is so great for the price! And image stabilisation is well worth the upgrade alone from the g7 (which I also love 😆)
Micro Four Nerds Same here. I used to recommend the G7 to all aspiring hybrid shooters and now I say G80. For everyone that I suspect will leave the camera at home and/or never buy anything but the kit lens, my recommendation is to this day still the LX100.
@Alixander Perzon omg, same question, lol 😂 Still struggle for those 2. Adding up gx85 for its tracking capability. I'm not beginner, but I want the cheapest available choice since I still in the college. I hope we get the answer..
Amazing!! I own one of these things and find it to be a good all around camera!! I still struggle somewhat with the complexity of the menus but the more I use it the better it gets. I have the 14-140mm lens that basically stays on the camera 90% of the time. I am considering a Rokinon 12mm for Vlogging but other than that and a 100-400mm for birds, I am reasonably happy with it. My hands are a little large for the very small buttons but I LOVE the twin dials on top that are programmable. Panoramas are easy as well. You paid less than half what I did a year and a half ago. At less than $500 it is a steal!!! Ergonomics are great, one of the best in the business at this point. Everything is where it should be, especially the PLAY button. I don't have to move my right hand from holding the camera to review a photo. Thanks again for a great review. I love these 5 reasons videos.
Uploaded my first "cinematic" video with the G80 on this channel and all of my friends/family are blown away from the quality of this camera! I used the 30mm 1.4 Sigmma lens and it is one the best budget friendly glass on the market!
Should be cool if you can make a video about one of the Nikons last ccd cameras like D80. They are pretty cheap nowdays and a really good performer for the price. I think they are around 100 euros or less. Big fan, keep it up man. 👍
Awesome video and beautiful pics as always :) Also, I didn't realise there was such a thing as a m43 - EF speed booster with autofocus, so cheers for that handy bonus info! I'd be curious to know what you make of that adapter, and whether it performs okay with older m43 bodies..?
I haven't tested it on anything but the G85 and it was ok. If you look at my video about the Fuji-EF adapter I show several examples with the G85 as well.
Have a good taste in music, and pick three or so songs before you start cutting your photos and b-roll to the beat of the music. Doesn’t hurt to have a talent for succinct explanation (something I struggle with) and great photo/video composition (which also doesn’t come easy for me) ;)
oh wow, that is a big leap, you'll be in for a treat! I own the G3 and the G6, and that alone is a big leap from one to the other! The leap from a G2 to a G80 would be truly massively massive!
It wont be I have GX80 aswell so I have that features with smaller body, I will buy G80 For good grip and screen Like G2 :) That SLR felling Is better for slightly bigger lenses, and focus peaking will be benefit too cus G2 dont have it :)
No reason to sell your G2. I have a G3 with the Hack and even thou I’m about to get a G85 . I’m still keeping the G3 as a B camera. I was going to get the GX85 at first but it’s not weathersealed
Just snagged one for £221 in UK. Originally bought a Gh4 but discovered the touch screen was not working so I will get my money back. That was £260 but at £221 the G80 gives me ibis and I think is smaller/lighter. Not up there with G9 or GH5 but only incrementally inferior at less than half the price.
*gets shifty eyes* But, but... I ~want~ to justify the desire for a G9, and here you are coming out with downright logical reasons why my current camera is more than perfect for what I want to do with it :P Nice video, I also love how it flows well, and makes quite a few good points!
@@gearreallydoesntmatter I probably could too, as it has several features I really like (although for some reason, my first comment is always regarding the viewfinder, followed by the IBIS).... Won't lie, I'd love to get my paws on a G9 ~and~ GH5S, and I probably will over time, but there is some kind of charm to the G85. Or maybe it's just sticker shock, and trying to find ways to properly justify the expenditure, aka having good reasons for buying something other than "it's shiny and I like the viewfinder". I suspect I'll wind up buying the G9 either way, as it does have a decent amount of features that do make sense for various things I want to do, and it's grip is rather lovely and comfortable...
You should check out the gx85. It's cheaper and you can get it with two kit lenses for around 500. That's what I picked up mine for on ebay and it was new.
Hi Matias! Can you please make video on how you color graded the footage from this video? The cineD and the first two clips especially the one with the palace. Thanks!
I wish I could get as concise as you do! I'm learning though. I almost bought this camera but I was really after something even smaller. All these reasons really brought me close to doing it though. If I wasn't trying to shrink my stuff, size and quantity, i'd have got it! So it's a good job you didn't do this video before :D Also.. for some reason I didn't realise the X-H1 shuts off the EVF when you tilt the screen :O I love that!
Ha ye :D But I bought the G7Xii, boring but it gets the job done surprisingly well. Really got it for very easy video pieces but the stills are decent!
Damian Brown I've looked at that as well. GRiii was preordered on day one as well. Rumor says the EOS-R will start shipping tomorrow. Have a preorder on that as well. Pretty far back in line though.
I own this camera and am quite happy. Except with iso, when shooting event in low light, and should stick with 1/100 or so. Do you have any video of type: amateurs video post processing? It would be nice to hear some recommendations. Something that does not need mac and a lot of time. Tnx. Amazing video as always.
Great review, as always. Somewhat OT, but I was wondering if you were still loving Capture One - you mentioned in your Richo GRII video that you had switched.
Hi Mattias, ironically I got this camera for review on my site the same day you released your video :) haha. For me, the grip is uncomfortable, too small and thin and I have small hands. The strap lug is also sharp and digs into my shooting hand. I can't get into a camera that isn't comfortable to hold and I think everyone should hold a camera before they decide on it. Otherwise, I completely agree its an incredible value and a great little camera for the price.
Absolutely... Do you find any advantages of post mount style neck strap lugs? I don't, I think the flush mounted kind are much more ergonomic...I cringe when I see them in a new design. So long as they never touch the shooting hand I'm fine, but... many do.
Do you still recommend this? I would mostly use it with vintage lenses and for video (also indoor events) I really want IBIS to use with my vintage lenses and video. I also have an X-e3 which I love for photos and an (a6000 that I might sell). I could get a G81 with a 12-32 kit lens and four batteries for 385 dollars. I am also considering fuji x-h1 and x-s10, altough those are double and triple the price. X-S10 might be endgame for me......but too tempting to get the G80 at that price. I am afraid of the ISO performance the most.... What do you think? (Just to let you know you are my no.1 favorite photo-video youtuber so your opinion is highly appreciated. Thanks man.)
Hey man, I would really like to know. How did you get yourself started in Photography? If you don't mind me asking, how did you land your first paid client?
Hey one quick question - is it possible to have a monitor attached that is showing the image while recording in-camera? :) The answer would help me a lot in my decision - thx in advance! :D
@@gearreallydoesntmatter Ah now I understand. I just use either a button or fold away the screen which will automatically activate the EVF. Works well for me, never have to think about it.
Mattias, could you please share your secret: why are g85's pics the way more alive and vivid, than pics of other photographers?🙏 Is it because you shooting in RAW, ot maybe because of using full frame lenses on mft body? I'm trying to figure out because I love to squeeze maximum out of affordable cameras. Right now I'm using my old cheap cameras: D3300 and D3400 with two lenses 35 and 50 mm 1.8g bought. DD is awesome, jpeg out of camera is stunning, and very close to FF. The only issue is autofocus. So I planning to buy one of those cheap workhorses: G85, G9, OM-D 1m2, GH5 or GH5s. Could you please tell me, shall I switch?🙌
I would consider a newer Nikon instead since you already have lenses. There are some with extremely fast autofocus. A D500 can be had in the same price range as some of the ones you mentioned.
Do you mean the a7 mk1? Go for the Panasonic G80 instead! The G80 is the latest G series from Panasonic. While the a7 mk1 is the oldest old a7 camera from Sony. Big difference.
Mattias, I’m a primarily a film shooter so I’ve downgraded my digital set up a lot and got an XT1 (still amazing) and have some money for a video camera. Should I sell that XT1 and have an XH1 for both video and photo or keep the XT1 and have a dedicated video camera like this G85?
That’s great. I don’t know how it’s physically possible to take a still photo with the mechanical shutter during video recording. Not saying it’s impossible, just saying I have no idea how that works.
I love dmy gx80 (same sensor and processor) for videos, however I found myself quite frustrated when taking stills in lower light. At 1600 iso, pictures were disappointingly soft but I understand the M4/3 limitations.
Mattias Burling, either. For me raw just had better dynamic range but I still found the files to be quite soft in comparison to my Fuji. It’s still an amazing camera and I’ve taken wonderful stills and handheld videos with it.
Miguel Lee Yeah compared to stuff all cameras are soft :) But with a good lens and proper exposure in raw, you should get clear images at iso 1600 imo.
Other than this camera, what other cameras would you recommend for people getting into photography? Budget is $600 - $650 (body + lens). I'm mainly getting into street, landscape, and event photography
Endless options in that price range if you buy used. Full frame DSLR or mirrorless, APS-C, m4/3 everything is available. I would start by figuring out what I wanted based on user experience. Go to a store and try all thats available to see if you want a DSLR or a mirrorless, big vs small, etc.
Nice video ! But i do have a question... You said that you bought it under $500 brand new, that means only the body ? Where do you live ? Here in France, at the time I write this comment the camera price is around 750€... I'm looking for deals ;)
I think I'm going with this over the OLY-omd-em1. What was the lens reducer you quickly mentioned to turn it into (nearly) an APS-C camera? Viltrox ?? Thanks
@@gearreallydoesntmatter oh my eyes must be a bit silly. i thought the camera wasn't sitting flat on the surface, therefore you must be using one of those foldable tripod...
I have a G7, and I love it. The G80/85 is a typical update; it adds some nice features but you have to decide if they mean enough to you to buy a new body. To me they don't, to you they might, but they're essentially similar cameras. No mistake!
I bought a G85 new but unfortunately after 5 months the rubber on the grip started falling off. I sent it into the third party repair center that handles warranty for Canada and they won't be getting a new grip for 6 weeks. I love the camera and maybe I just got unlucky, but if I wanted something that I didn't care about and would fall apart I would have got a cheap bridge camera instead.
Is it fair to ask: This camera or the new Ricoh GR iii for the the average Joe? :] Edit: This camera or the new Ricoh GR iii as a first camera for the average Joe?
@@gearreallydoesntmatter Thank you, I've been watching it for awhile and waiting for the price to drop. I'm a beginner and looking at this camera or the Nikon D3500.

$1,200 USD, or $1,200 local currency? $1,200 CAD is non-sale price for kit version in Canada for example (regularly goes on sale for as low as $1k CAD). If $1,200 USD, I hope that's after taxes pricing o_O
On my G7 and GH4 by default the F5 button controls that. You can set the way the way it works within the menus. With mine it's set to turn on the EVF if I hit the button. Also by default it seems to turn on the EVF if you have the monitor closed and not visible. Some smart engineering there. Long story short you can customize it how you want.

Carl G yeah its all personal and one must try for oneself. I have very large hands and no trouble with the grip. Actually find it comfortable.
Can you help me? I just purchased a Lumix G85 and the screen hinge cover on the bottom has a little bit of play in it. Is this normal?
Mattias, we need you to review Fuji's XF10! Thank you!
Boba Tube It probably won't happen since I can't really see why one wouldn't just get the GRii instead. And I have preordered the GRiii.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter You just made my point! I am sure many of us are wondering how a fan of the GR line would find this camera.
Boba Tube I see. However it would be pretty expensive for me to buy a camera just to see how it compared to the camera I really want :)
Less than $500?? Wow.. lucky. I really enjoy all of the content you put out. Great pics and recommendations. Thank you.
Standard price here. Now when the successor is coming out they will clear inventory for less than $400. Used you will be looking at $250.
Hey man, I would really like to know. How did you get yourself started in Photography? If you don't mind me asking, how did you land your first paid client?
Hey one quick question - is it possible to have a monitor attached that is showing the image while recording in-camera? :)
The answer would help me a lot in my decision - thx in advance! :D
You should be able to disable the EVF sensor. I did on both of the Panasonic cameras I've owned.
Kelkschiz Yes but I want to use it. Just not by accident. Fuji nailed it imo.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter Ah now I understand. I just use either a button or fold away the screen which will automatically activate the EVF. Works well for me, never have to think about it.
Does G80 (europe) still shoot continuously without stop even if it makes multiple files?
Lovely video! Are those photos straight out of the camera JPEGs? I would love to know your opinion on its JPEGs compared to Fujifilm's.
Eriko Werbet No raw, I've never tried the jpegs.
I bought the GX model and deeply regretted it. :( Im keeping my eye on ebay for the G80
Just bought one used but when I use M function screen goes black with a red dot.
Why is that?
Hey Mattias,
I know you've done Black Magic cameras before. Will you review the new "4K Black Magic Pocket Camera"?
Blackbirds Photography Some day maybe. But I cancelled my preorder for the EOS-R so it might be a while.
Hey how do you get your videos to look so good? I own a g85 and my footage come out looking pretty bad. Yours looks phenomenal
Old Man Hendo what lens and picture style do you use?
Would you recommend this or the a7 for hybrid shooter? (I need good video for UA-cam and pictures for architecture) both are about the same price now
Alberto Figueroa If its 50% or more video I would say this.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter thanks! what makes you decide? Does the a7 have any problem for video? Just curious, cause you own both :)
Alberto Figueroa not problems but the G80 has imo a nicer image and top notch stabilization.
Do you mean the a7 mk1? Go for the Panasonic G80 instead!
The G80 is the latest G series from Panasonic.
While the a7 mk1 is the oldest old a7 camera from Sony.
Big difference.
I’ve had both and kept the G85!
Any more lens recommendations?
Mattias, I’m a primarily a film shooter so I’ve downgraded my digital set up a lot and got an XT1 (still amazing) and have some money for a video camera.
Should I sell that XT1 and have an XH1 for both video and photo or keep the XT1 and have a dedicated video camera like this G85?
Up to you man :)
Can you or have you tested the Zenitar-M F1.7 50mm lense.
That’s great. I don’t know how it’s physically possible to take a still photo with the mechanical shutter during video recording. Not saying it’s impossible, just saying I have no idea how that works.
Michael Seneschal It just does it. You see it happening in the video with a breif freeze frame.
I love dmy gx80 (same sensor and processor) for videos, however I found myself quite frustrated when taking stills in lower light. At 1600 iso, pictures were disappointingly soft but I understand the M4/3 limitations.
Miguel Lee raw or jpeg?
Mattias Burling, either. For me raw just had better dynamic range but I still found the files to be quite soft in comparison to my Fuji. It’s still an amazing camera and I’ve taken wonderful stills and handheld videos with it.
Miguel Lee Yeah compared to stuff all cameras are soft :)
But with a good lens and proper exposure in raw, you should get clear images at iso 1600 imo.
should i buy fuji x70 as my first camera?
if you want it. Its a great camera imo.
Mattias Burling aah thank you so much for replying! I learned about the camera thru watching your videos, love love your content!!
Hey Mat, do you think that the Sony Rx100 mark iii is a good camera to start with for street photography?
Don Nicolai Salonga any camera will do, so yes.
It has very small buttons so if you can deal with that it's great.
I think I'm going with this over the OLY-omd-em1. What was the lens reducer you quickly mentioned to turn it into (nearly) an APS-C camera? Viltrox ?? Thanks
Yeah I believe I had a Viltrox at that time.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter Are they better quality than a Fotodiox brand? Thx.
You get what you pay for.
Is this a tiny tripod you are using? I wonder if you mind telling us what you were using.
Where?
@@gearreallydoesntmatter oh my eyes must be a bit silly. i thought the camera wasn't sitting flat on the surface, therefore you must be using one of those foldable tripod...
Just one question: what's the video duration time limit for this camera? Course I'd need a relatively good but cheap camera for a b-roll...
30 minutes
Thank you
Hey Mattias what are your thoughts on the lx100 ii
Toby Solesbury seems great.
I already bought G7, would you consider that a mistake?
No its still a nice camera.
I have a G7, too. Nice camera! Very portable and light.
I have a G7, and I love it. The G80/85 is a typical update; it adds some nice features but you have to decide if they mean enough to you to buy a new body. To me they don't, to you they might, but they're essentially similar cameras. No mistake!
great cam but went with A6300 cuz of better af n low light for much cheaper price
I regurarely see the G80 for $300. Never seen the a6300 that low. I've had three a6300, all broken straight from factory. Won't ever buy it again.
TechnoBabble That can and will happen on most cameras. I usually just get some glue.
Can someone tell me how are the JPEGs?
Is it fair to ask: This camera or the new Ricoh GR iii for the the average Joe? :]
Edit: This camera or the new Ricoh GR iii as a first camera for the average Joe?
Depends on what type of images you want to take. Both would work fine to learn photography.
Prices have acually gone up 30% (in sweden) since you posted this. Coincidence?
just bought the sony a7 ii and kinda regretting not buying this thing :/
vinny rotella They are both good enough.
Image wise, this or a used GH4? (I *really* lust for a headphone jack to monitor my audio)
Eduardo Portas almost the same image.
Thanks.
280mm with 1 second shutter😯😯😯😯😯😯😯😯
Do you think this is still a good buy?
Yes.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter Thank you, I've been watching it for awhile and waiting for the price to drop. I'm a beginner and looking at this camera or the Nikon D3500.
I guess IBIS may replace ISO & shutter speed for stills, but for freezing subject I don't think it'll work.
Don't have IBIS, correct me if I'm wrong.
taz24787 it cant replace anything :)
I'd get the Sony a6000 over this and they're about the same price but that's just me.
theizza68 I had one. Its also nice.
Where are you finding this for less than $500? On the link in the description and on amazon its closer to $800
Paul H regular camera stores. Also the link in the description is with a lens, SD and bag... they are not gonna give you that stuff for free :)
Good points, but what about my
*sHalLoW DEptH oF fiELd !! hOw dO i GEt GoOD phOToS wiThoUt fULL fRAmE!*
Zachary Whitney I think there was plenty of shallow depth of field shots in the video :)
yet somehow its around 1200$ in my country :,(
That blows. Not even b&h are asking that much.
Ouch, thats not nice. You have my sympathies. If second hand is not a problem at customs with import duty, perhaps visit a neighbouring country if poss...?? A.,
Alex Jackson-Smith yup, or ebay.
$1,200 USD, or $1,200 local currency? $1,200 CAD is non-sale price for kit version in Canada for example (regularly goes on sale for as low as $1k CAD). If $1,200 USD, I hope that's after taxes pricing o_O
@@WhiteWulfe 1200$ usd when you exchange local currency price to usd
Can you set evf/lcd to a fn button?
On my G7 and GH4 by default the F5 button controls that. You can set the way the way it works within the menus. With mine it's set to turn on the EVF if I hit the button. Also by default it seems to turn on the EVF if you have the monitor closed and not visible. Some smart engineering there. Long story short you can customize it how you want.
250$ for a g7 ??!?
easy.
Mattias Burling Its 400$ in France... 😅😐😥
Yes, it's a great body, but then, there is GX9 and E-M10 III, which are even smaller, lighter, and GX9 has a better sensor.
Yuri G no mic input and the gx9 is almost twice as expensive.
No mic, no fully articulated screen and just slightly better res. But the form factor of the gx9 is great
