- In this video I'm exploring WN62, resistance nest 62 which is located on the bluffs below the Normandy American Cemetery at Omaha beach. Starting at the beach I work my way up the bluff to the top to take a look a the monuments there.

My father made the war sound like more fun than you could have with your clothes on or off until just before he died. He told me what he left out, the things he had seen that caused him to have PTSD.

My father was at D-Day & part of the Second Wave. He stated :" the sky was black that day & the sea flowed viscous red. Soldiers were dropping like swatted flies. We fried for our mothers, our home, our family pets- anywhere but here on Bloody Omaha".

I learned about it in 2005 and finally had the opportunity to go last year
I was stationed in Fürth/Nürnberg Germany from the summer of 93' till late 95' US Army. My company, 218th MP Co with HQ out of Augsburg, we spent 3 weeks in Normandy France pulling security for the 50th Anniversary of the Normandy Invasion. In your video towards the end, the monument for the 1st Division Memorial with the names in gold color are Pinder, William O Darby, Johnson, Monteith and Merrill. Those 5 names were named after the US Army Kaserne/barracks in Fürth/Nürnberg. I was stationed at William O Darby barracks. Down the road from Darby was Johnson. Monteith and Pinder were located in the northwest part of Fürth and Merrill barracks was located across the street from the Nuremberger Volksfest. I was the last 3 American MPs pulling road duty (Law Enforcement duties) before we closed all of it down handing it over back to the German Govt.
It’s actually really heart wrenching seeing how easy American targets were .... but it was a sacrifice that was needed . Rest In Peace to all the brave men who died on that beach.

I always thought it was astounding that young men like these would run head long into absolute carnage like Omaha Beach, where it wasn't skill but odds that decided whether or not you survived. Absolutely amazing.

I remember reading besides d-day being a disaster and nothing going as planned that day. The main strategy and logic Eisenhower had for this beach invasion was if you send guys out they have no other choice but to fight and push forward, and that’s literally the only choice they had. There’s no where else to go lol. Wish I could find that quote
If I’m not mistaken, the first bunker WN62 would have had a 75mm Pak 40 anti tank gun inside. Also Heinrich Severloh’s MG42 position is nearby the hillside. On the beach, Easy Red, there’s a large rock named Ray’s Rock where medic Ray Lambert rendered aid. His book “Every Man A Hero” details what it was like to be on the receiving end of that horror. His account mentions machine gun fire pouring down from WN62. Which was kind of up and to the left from his perspective.
Had the opertunity to visit all the D Day beaches after my father in law passed away to see where he landed on 6 th June.
It’s hard not to shed a tear .

As a very young child, I got to go into the abandoned coastal defensive bunkers in Galveston Texas. I've never forgotten them. These are amazing.
Looking back in the years on that beach must be a hell bloody war mad respect to the rangers and airborne

@@TheBattlefieldExplorerwas just looking thru my dad's photo album from WW2. I noticed a pic of a pillbox with a caption that said "we landed 100 yrds from this pillbox". I couldn't discern which of the ones you showed was the one he landed near. My dad was with the 147th combat engineers. They were part of the 6th engineers special brigade that landed that morning of june 6th.

My Grandfather set foot on that beach on D+1. He was awarded the Soldier's Medal for Valor. I would love to take a few days to explore the areas he saw. Thank you for sharing!

Ah, my great great uncle, Lawrence Welch was a infantry, he left the landing craft and was shot immediately in the leg, he fell but then he sadly had to use someone’s dead body as a shield and he accounted this: “I could feel bullets hitting the guy” and also the dead guy saved his life from shielding and stopped blood loss from his leg from pressure, dead people can save you but not how you want to. He died in the early 2000, if your confused if this feels like it missing details like what sector he landed on its because he died when my mom was young and he died from forgetting how to do things, brush teath, eat, put on close etc but I can’t remember the name,
I never met him since I was born in 2009 and that’s a good long time after he died, but he is joined by these people: my dad who died a phew months ago, my other great great uncle (not a brother of Lawrence) who died in Pearl Harbor and died on the uss Arizona (I think) and my great grampa who was a p-51 pilot and following that many many lives of other people who fighting for freedom, may he rest in piece and so with the others

Sorry to here that, but sounds interesting, he was a hero, along with all the soldiers who fought in normandy, there were heroes on both sides.
My great grandmother had 2 cousins who fought in ww2 for Canada, both fought on D-Day. One was killed on D-Day the other just died on June 8 2019

Nice video. Wife and I were in Normandy in 2014 during the 70th Anniversary celebrations of the landings. Very humbling experience. Two of my uncles landed on Omaha with the 29th Infantry, with one of them eventually getting wounded in the battle for Saint Lo. Both were able to make it home, thankfully.

My Grandpa Vernis Ivan Church was a Platoon Sergeant in the 95th Division with Patton Third army Iron Men Of Metz, 377TH Infantry Regiment, Company C. I’ve been trying to do a lot of research to find out more about the stories about where my grandpa was at. I’m also hoping to find some photos of him.
Grandpa also fought in Luxembourg, Holland and crossed the Rhine with General Simpsons 9TH. Then my grandpa entered the Ruhr pocket and fought with the 2nd armored division with the hell on wheels division. My grandpa saw a lot of combat at the Battle of the Bulge. Thanks Cody

Dankje wel! I have always wondered what was left of the German positions on the beach. I can't imagine what it would have been like for the soldiers on both sides.
A name of one of those men that crossed Easy Red and on up the beach that day. Private Edwin E Wilkerson from Kansas. Five foot six inches tall. Blonde hair and blue eyes, dripping wet he weighed 150 pounds. Somewhere above the beach in the next few days he would earn a purple heart and bronze star. During the Battle of France he would earn another bronze star. On October 8, 1944, he and Captain Bobbie Brown along with his fellow soldiers would assault Crucifix Hill north and east of Aachen, Germany. There, Captain Brown would earn the Medal of Honor. Private Wilkerson would die of wounds while assaulting one of over thirty bunkers on the hill. He rests in peace in Belgium beside many of his fellow soldiers.
Seeing all the names on the monuments of the men who gave their lives for the cause of freedom is truly humbling. Thank you for the respectful tour of this iconic battlefield.

I've been to the landing beaches and found it an almost spiritual experience.
Omaha is an interesting yet eerie place. The distance from the landing points to the first line of cover is truly moving, walking the same route up yo that bluff wearing comfortable summer clothes is actually quite tough going. God knows how those men weighed down with equipment in full combat clothes made it is unbelievable. RIP men on both sides who lost their lives 🙏 💔

In the saving private ryan film the machine gun positions are on the edge of the beach. Was this not the case? . I did get to go to omaha beach but only a very short visit. Would love to spend a whole day there sometime..
How high would you say is the highest point of the bluffs on Omaha and how many yards from the sea to the bluffs?
Omaha was a lot more flat than I expected it to be. Watching saving Private Ryan it seems pretty steep. Perhaps this section of Beach was a different section than what they represented in the movie
Saving Private Ryan was not filmed on the original landing beaches in Normandy. The locations for Saving Private Ryan can be found in England and Ireland, but only one, the military cemetery seen in the opening and closing scenes is in Normandy American Cemetery, near Colleville-sur-Mer, France just above the Omaha beach (Easy Red and Fox Green sectors)

I went here a few months ago. Does anybody know the purpose of those wiggly lines moulded into the concrete inside the bunkers ?
it is believed to be caused by moisture over time. If you're building subterranean concrete walls in a humid environment like the Normandy coast, poorly engineered walls will quickly become mushroom farms, and they'll be constantly weeping with moisture

If you think about it, It was really just the axis leaders that were sucky people. The infantry were pretty brave

I just never understood why they knew where they were going to land and have everything setup right there in that spot. Can someone explain this???
As far as I know the Germans didn't know, that is why they fortified the coast from Norway to Spain. Most fortifications were around Calais, that is where the Germans expected the landings to happen but every beach and harbor was fortified.

@@TheBattlefieldExplorer het is een aanrader. Als je bij de begraafplaats bent bij het monument, is daar ook een heel klein museumpje. En er is daar vlakbij ook een deel van de loopgraven nagebouwd. Als je het niet kan vinden, zoom op Google Maps naar militair ereveld grebbenberg. Dan moet je een beetje inzoomen. En dan vlak bij de dierentuin moete je een tekst met loopgraven grebbenberg zien verschijnen. De loopgraven liggen links van de begraafplaats als je vanaf het monument kijkt achter dat weiland. Links boven in het hoekje. En rechts van de begraafplaats zie je koelcel grebbenberg staan, in dat gedeelte staan een paar bunkers als het goed is op de heimersteinse laan daar vlakbij . Ik weet niet of ze uit de 2e wereldoorlog komen, maar volgensmij wel. Ik ben 1 keer op 4 mei op de grebbenberg geweest bij de dooden herdenking, is ook wel een aanrader om een keer bij te wonen. Ik hoop dat u wat aan deze info heeft!

Even with all these fire support and all that, how come the allied forces advanced?
Doggedness and determination
was the main reason the other beaches weren't as deadly because the shelling and bombing were more effective? or was the topograhy and layout so much more advantageous on Omaha for the Germans? i'm not a military expert but is there a laiman's explanation as to why the allies had to attack with this method? why not shell and bomb for weeks at a time first? even if it drew more german infantry to the scene, at that point of the war we had huge air superiority no?
Those are a lot of questions to answer but I'll give it a go.
1) They had to land somewhere between Gold and Utah and Omaha beach was the only suitable location
2) However, almost the entire beach is half moons shaped and overlooked by tall cliffs and the Germans made skillful use of the terrain.
3) Their defenses were strongest at the beach exits and there were only a couple which had to be taken.
4) Most bunkers were sited so that they would fire along the length of the beach making them even more formidable
5) Bombing for weeks gave away the location (as you said) and then all the reserves in the area would be moved her. The element of surprise was paramount for the invasion to succeed.

I'm very curious because 1 of the clips it showed soldiers assembled at the rocks getting their first shelter ... I highly doubt that this film is Monteiths men before taking wn62 on the east...or next to where cotas men assembled ?

But I'd love to know I'm wrong bout that or find a really good descriptive source of Omaha film with accurate labels. Theres that really really famous one that..if I'm not mistaken is from near where cota broke thru ..or maybe the wn All the way west on omaha... where apparently the camera man got their first and hes shooting 5 or 6 men running with 2 or 3 getting hit as hes filming..and it alwayyys gets cut off after like 5 seconds wish there was more. That particular one seems like it may be first wave simply because of the consistency of the german fire
