Looks great! I have always used Poly for my boards that I make for customers, but may switch to the resin. Looks way easier than the 5 coats of poly that I normally apply lol
Great project! Keep em coming
+Jesse Phillips Thank you! I'll do my best, thanks for the support!
Awesome, GO SPURS GO! I need to make one for my Spurs and one for my 13fox. Great work!
Thanks for watching Angela! These boards were a lot of fun to build!
That looks great! Your editing looked great too!
Just watched this with the wife and now she wants a corn hole board! Wife approved projects are the best;) I have been wanting to use pallet wood but wasn't to sure on the sliding factor… but I think this resin may be the trick! If I do a pallet corn hole video I'll mention you as my inspiration :)
Joe
+homesteadonomics Thanks Joe I like this style of editing, I may stick to it. That would be awesome, a desert inspired cornhole board! I've seen pallet wood Cornhole boards before and they always turn out great! I'm going to be sure to look out for that video!
Beat damn boards I’ve ever seen! Go Spurs Go!!!
Wow thank you! I thought they turned out pretty awesome myself 😂
Cool! I've never used Art Resin. I'm gonna have to check it out.
+Wm. Walker Co. Check it out man! I saw it on the Drunken Woodworkers page he did a pretty cool thing with it, it was like a 3D picture
Pretty awesome man. Great job. I haven't heart of Art Resin before.
+Dan Ridley Thanks man! I didn't either until I saw it on The Drunken Woodworkers channel and thought it would be perfect for a Cornhole board
Thats cool. I learned so much from his channel. I learned most of what I know about woodworking from UA-cam.
+Dan Ridley Same here!
Wicked! thanks for a great video! we will share it around. Have fun playing :)
+ArtResin Thanks guys, your product is awesome btw!
Go Spurs Go!
Your boards look great, I am about to put the same coating on mine. Quick question though, I'm concerned how slick the surface will be after I apply the epoxy, have you had any issues with the bags sliding off too easily?
I actually havent had really any problems with excessive sliding! Of course they do slide a little more, however to compensate that I made the angle of the boards steeper than normal. I normally do a 12" height, but for this boad I believe I did 12.5"-13". Hope this helps! Sorry for the late response let me know how they turn out, I'd love to see them!!
Looks great! I was wondering what color stain you used on the boards before you applied the art resin, if you even applied a stain first. Also what kind of plywood is that?
I believe I used a red cherry rustoleum interior stain for the wood before applying the Art Resin. This is 3/4" Birch ply wood, I believe a 4'x8' piece costs around $50. Thanks for watching Alex!
Hey Zach, all the boards you've made look amazing. Two questions for you: first, where do you get all the awesome decals from? Second, after you apply the art resin can you feel the edge of those decals or does the art resin act as a leveler too?
+Matthew Russo Thanks Matt! I get all my decals from a place called Colley Printing, colleyavenuecopies.com/ they make my decals really quick and the quality is great! Ask for Holly! Also the ArtResin is great for this project, it feels like a glass counter top. The bottles show you how much to use based off square footage. You won't feel the decals at all! Hope this helped
Nice work, these look great! With the graphics - did you have the print shop laminate the vinyl decals, or just leave them as uncoated vinyl? I see varying reports online as to if the resin affects the laminate on a decal or not. Some say a laminate will react chemically and bubble under the resin.
And from a coverage aspect, I see on multiple calculators that 3/4 gallon of resin is suggested for 8ft sq of space - albeit for 1/8” thick final layer. Overkill? Yours looks good with substantially less resin.
I’d plan to get a bit more Epoxy than I used. There were some spots I had to fill in with additional epoxy. I’d use a waste factor of almost 10-20%
Dang, how bad were you kicking yourself on those couple of spots the sticker was coming up?! I’ve done that with a photo before but was too late lol
Very nice tutorial, thanks. one question though, do you happen to know the dimensions of the legs and the measurement of the mounting location where the carriage bolt goes. Thanks
Thanks for watching! The corn hole sits 12" high from back face to ground. As for the legs there's no real dimensions to work off of, when spacing it I usually put the legs on a 1/4" play with a 3/4" backing to set the carriage bolts.
Did you add sealant before you put the epoxy on?
Looks great! Did that 8 oz cover the whole board or did you have to add more off camera.
+Kaged Creations The 8 oz worked, however I wish I would have done 16 to get a good thick layer on the boards!
Great project! Was the 8oz of resin for one board or two? Keep the videos coming and .... go ODU! Class of 84!
How much total resin/hardener did you use per board, it looks like in the video you used 4 oz of each per board. 4 oz resin and 4 oz hardener, is that correct? Thank you.
ncl420 thats what i was wondering. Looks like 5oz each. But i watched another video and a lady said 3oz per 1sq-ft and a board is 8 sq-ft so she used 24oz. Sounds like alot but hers came out good. Id say 16-20oz per board would be enough. I noticed he didnt do the sides of the board so that extra could cover that.
Were both boards 2’ by 4’ ? And if so how much resin did you use per board?
What’s the difference between using polyctyllic vs art resin?
Looks great. Did you need any extra work to get the bubbles out of the resin?
You can use a blowtorch over the surface (keeping the flame about 6" away from the surface) to pull any bubbles out and make the top super smooth and clear
+Robin Lewis Thank you! I didn't need to do too much to get rid of bubbles. I used a heat gun (a torch will work too like Jesse said) to get some of the bubbles out.
I thought you might have done that. Was hoping you'd found some miracle, non-bubbling epoxy that I hadn't heard about
+Robin Lewis Surprisingly there are barely any bubbles and the bubbles that are there you can honestly blow them away without heat.
Nylon nuts work wonders. They wont back off over time but can still be removed for needed repairs. What did you use for the pocket holes? Why did you choose that size pocket hole screw? Can the acrylic cause vinyl decals to bubble, discolor or lose contact with the wood surface? In my experiences, cheap decals can release from the surface and cause quite a problem. This is why I switched over to vinyl stencils and use straight paint or stains, and a water base poly, unless the customer want the $25 upgrade to acrylic finish.
I chose 1-1/4” kreg screws because I found it had just the right amount of bite and so far the decals and epoxy are doing well! I’ll have to check out the nylon nuts on the next build
Did the resin make the board slick?
dude that is effin awesome! !! now THAT is the glossy finish im lookin for on my boards...oh by the way what is the thickness of the board before u put the bottom part on?
+Kentuckianna Man Thanks for watching man!! I use a 3/4" ply board (roughly $47 for a 4'x8') I get the nicest ply wood board which will give great contrasting grain when you apply ArtResin to it! If you plan on doing this I would do it in two parts like I showed. When I did it all in one part I got A LOT of runs on the side....had to do a lot of sanding to fix it
+The College Woodworker If you use masking tape on the edges clean up is a breeze.
I wish I would have thought of that before hand! I did another project with the base attached and I had runs like crazy!! ended up messing the boards up!
Did you use anything to keep the plywood from warping in the long term?
The only precaution I used to 'seal' the wood is stain then the Art Resin finish. After doing some research I feel pretty confident the Art Resin should preserve the wood over the course of its lifespan. Do you have any suggestions on how to combat warping?
Hey so ima about to epoxy my boards on the art resin container instructions is says that since my board is 2x4 I should use around 32 oz, looks like you used 8 oz which worked out fine. Just wondering your thoughts
I would honestly use what they recommend on there. Maybe add 10-20% even. I used 16 oz I want to say and it did not cover the board. I had to mix more up and coat it. Better to have more than less. Let me know how it goes!
And you said you shouldn’t need a heat gun? I got a torch I could use if need be for any bubbles if you think that would
work.
@@tbone1534 Yes I think that will work. Sometime my torch goes out when I turn it over so thats why I bought the cheap heat gun at walmart.
Does anyone know if this art resin (or any other epoxy resin) provides consistent slide/playability weather the temperature is hot or cold, humid or dry? For example... Polyurethane seams to always go tacky and bags stick with humidity or way to slippery when hot and dry.
I know Slick Woody boards claim to have a special vinyl coating that provides consistent play under all weather conditions (except maybe snow and rain).
Thanks for any answers to a clear coating that provides consistent play/slidability.
SpiritConscious thanks for watching! I made these for a customer and they haven’t had any complaints as far as having the bags slide off. They’ve played inside, outside and in all different season (in Virginia). The resin is def a little more slippery than the poly though so keep that in mind. I’ve used water based poly crylic for most to all of my boards and that stuff works out really well, especially when you sand to 400 grit. Hope this helps
Zac Jones...4 years later, that was the question we have too! We wrapped and the vinyl seems to need a coating, for longevity sake. All this money, you want it to look good and last as long as you can still play!! So reading others comments, do I need to be concerned about vinyl deteriorating with the resin? The brand you used was exactly the kind I had planned to use, b4 Hubs questioned the play consistency of resin....dang questions! Lol!!
How well will the art resin hold up to sun. Will it yellow?
Jon, the art resin from my experience hasn't yellowed at all from the sun. The reason I went with them was to test their claim that it doesn't yellow over time and in the sun. Super easy to use with a 1:1. Let me know how they turn out!
Are the boards slippery??
Nice! Does it act as a polyeurothane? How's it work as far as UV protective?
Thanks Jake! it acts just like poly, it seals and protects from UV and surface water! I was very happy with how it turned out. Thanks for the comment!
Does it matter if you do this after building the whole set or do it before ?
Putting the resin that is
What was that you was mixing up to put on the board
Its an epoxy base that gives it that shinny appearance. I used Art Resin (link in the description) but you could use any type of epoxy really! Thanks for watching!
Is it fine over decal? Will it yellow it? Is it like polyurethane?
Perfect over the decal, the artresin doesnt yellow and its a little stronger and more durable than Poly. Thanks for watching
Nice board--go spurs go. R u fan of the spurs and are you in San Antonio.
This was actually for a customer! I'm more of a football fan myself! Fly eagles Fly!
Zac Jones come on. Eagles.... lol
Question for ya. I used the art resin on my boards awhile back and they are too slippery. Do you have any recommendations to help make them less slick?
Andrew Kinnaird is recomend making the height of the boards taller so they don’t have a tendency to slide. There also might by clear waxes that could help as wekl
I like the resin better then the oil base poly.
shawnberzinsky I do too, I think it really makes the grain pop on the boards, thanks for watching!
