How does this compare to the Joe Rocket Phoenix Ion. I know the Icon is +$70 and includes CE1 back armor. What about build quality and other protection?
Very similar build quality IMO. Joe Rocket has been making good jackets for a long time. Not as popular as they once were but still good products. - Van
The complete mesh segment on the back worries me a little. Is it abrasion resistant or will it just tear on a back slide and send the back armor flying?
No Icon does not offer a chest protector designed to integrate with their jackets. If that is something you are interested in I would take a look at Alpinestars, RS Taichi or Spidi. Each of these brands offer products that are a little more technical than Icon. - Van
I bought the original Contra after watching your video on it. I love it, and it gets widely admired. In fact I think I prefer it to the update in that it has the extra TP protector on the back, although in tropical conditions the new jacket would probably be preferable in that it flows more air.

Any reputable brand like Icon tests the materials they will be using in the apparel. I would trust this will hold up in a crash. - Van
