For me, Maka and Soul is my golden standard for how a soulmates should be portrayed. Their relationship is like that very old married couples that you would ask “why are you two still together.” The two of them just share a very special bond and it’s definitely not just “friends”
the main reason im sad they arent dating is that they would be one of the best anime/manga couples ever. not a lot of couples have their kind of development and chemistry. but even withought romantic feelings, they are soulmates and a wonderful team

They would die for each other, without second thoughts. Shiping them with anyone else is just weird. When the manga ended I was SO pissed, bc we never had any confirmation that they actually ended together. But tbh we don't need it, their connection is stronger than love, literal soul mates. In the case of shounen/action anime it’s either they don’t really try because of the whole stigma about boys not liking romance stuff, and they can’t write it in a good way and they’re afraid it’ll change too much about the characters or put less focus on them as individuals. But there are ways to write romance without completely taking away a characters individuality. You just need to separate them sometimes and show that they both have their own separate aspirations, hobbies, opinions, etc. A lot of times when they do write romance they end up making either both or one of the characters entire existence revolve around their partner, which sucks lol And I do like romance anime, but I never ship anything in them because what’s the point if it’s already canon. Most of my ships came from shounen because they’re not canon, but there is potential and the characters are always more fleshed out.

Eh, if you actually pay attention to the themes of the series (mainly current generation doing better than previous generation and Maka and Soul supposedly paralleling Maka's parents in dynamic) and the fact that the nature of Soul and Maka's relationship right in the first chapter is established by Soul's line: "Cool men don't cheat on their partners" (and 'cheating' here specifically refers to romantic infidelity since Maka even compares it to Spirit's love life, not professional or even friendship disloyalty) actually kind of call that these two's relationship will eventually turn romantic in the future, making them...say, married to other people actually won't fit into this theme and cheapen it, it's either they spent their life married to each other (or the equivalent) or they're with no one. Soul's line establishing that the nature of their relationship is basically being no different to a romantic one (because it basically establishes that he can't stay as Maka's weapon while dating Blair) actually kind of made the idea of them being just 'Platonic Soulmates' incredibly awkward. So yeah, if you actually look closer to themes, these two staying strictly platonic in the long run doesn't actually fit (but it still makes sense that they never dated in the series proper considering they're both still really young and the line can only come full circle when they're old enough to make that kind of life-long commitment)

It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that Soul Eater is my absolute favorite anime and manga of all time, but that's because it's better than anything else I know, not because it's flawless. Probably one of the biggest problems I have with this show is with Maka's rant at the beginning of this video, or more accurately Blair's reaction to it, which is nothing. I know Soul didn't think of countering anything she says because he was just pretending and this was a plot to get Blair to drop her guard, but why wouldn't Blair herself get angry at Maka badmouthing anyone who would want to be with her to her face? A person who's been cheated on without their knowledge has a good reason to be angry about it, but a lot of the time this happens it can come off as them being possessive and treating their partner like it's "theirs" and doesn't have the right to decide for themselves who they want to be with, or they ignore how the person they're being cheated on with (sometimes without even knowing they have a partner) is you know, a person who has their own perspective, instead relegating them to an object of desire for the cheater and/or an obstacle for the person being cheated on. In this case it's a bit of both, made even worse by the fact that strictly speaking, Soul wasn't cheating at all, he told Maka upfront that he wants to leave her and be Blair's partner instead. You can argue that doing something like that is a bad decision, but not really morally wrong, and usually when someone reacts to it like Maka does it's a sign that they're a bad partner and leaving them is actually the right decision. Okubo had a perfect opportunity to bring some of this up, and in the process subvert the expectation of Blair being a silly fanservice gag by having her get angry at Maka and argue back that she's acting like everything is about her and ignores both Blair and Soul's perspective - And here's a thought, maybe that would be what gives Soul the opportunity to attack Blair while she's distracted and reveal his true intention in the process. But I guess if Okubo did that then it would be pretty hard to then have Blair stop the fight when she's revealed to not be a witch and just become friends with the people who just broke into her house and repeatedly tried to murder her completely unprompted.

It's always delivered by having a side female character having most of her personality revolve around crushing on the male main lead and has little role outside of that) if these two became canon, it'd actually be an exception of that and these two will go down in history as 'that one battle shonen who actually does the romance right' Soul Eater currently should have the reputation of 'that one show where the main girl and guy lead are just friends at last' which ended up not really making it feel that special or talked about much specifically for that reason. If anything you can see, how these two actually got outright ship teased numerous times to the point they made drama CDs which sole purpose is to have them say 'I love you' in romantic sense to each other, that it just made most people feel frustrated instead. In my opinion, Soul Eater does kinda a poor job when making their relationship strictly platonic since there are just way too many instances of blatant ship teasing between these two (Maka even at one point lowkey flirted with Soul that she wanted their relationship to be like Ox and Kim...who are boyfriend and girlfriend and aren't even weapon-meister partners like them. This is a blatant romantic text) and frankly, had they've gotten through with it and maybe confirm these two to be an item in an epilogue or smth (the usual married in the distant future thing) then I'm 100% sure Soul Eater's way of developing their romance would actually be talked about more around the anime community and hailed up as an example on how to do it right in an action-adventure show that don't necessarily want to overly focus on the romantic aspect of their relationship (just the overall foundation of why the relationship is very strong)
They are in love, but in the most non-serious but serious way possible, they were basically already already dating smh. They r soulmates don’t tell me otherwise🥺💗🫶😭

If anything you can see, how these two actually got outright ship teased numerous times to the point they made drama CDs which sole purpose is to have them say 'I love you' in romantic sense to each other, that it just made most people feel frustrated instead.
In my opinion, Soul Eater does kinda a poor job when making their relationship strictly platonic since there are just way too many instances of blatant ship teasing between these two (Maka even at one point lowkey flirted with Soul that she wanted their relationship to be like Ox and Kim...who are boyfriend and girlfriend and aren't even weapon-meister partners like them. This is a blatant romantic text) and frankly, had they've gotten through with it and maybe confirm these two to be an item in an epilogue or smth (the usual married in the distant future thing) then I'm 100% sure Soul Eater's way of developing their romance would actually be talked about more around the anime community and hailed up as an example on how to do it right in an action-adventure show that don't necessarily want to overly focus on the romantic aspect of their relationship (just the overall foundation of why the relationship is very strong)
They are in love, but in the most non-serious but serious way possible, they were basically already already dating smh. They r soulmates don’t tell me otherwise🥺💗🫶😭

Why did Maka get that level of upset that Soul didn't tell her about his nightmare but told Medusa (his doctor)? It falls under medical so ya he told a doctor not her, even if they were married it's not something she is entitled to know. I get that she was all oh didn't tell me, but reacting like he put his arm around her or went on a coffee date is ridiculous.
