    This antenna is meant for cosplay. It is designed to resemble the L band dipole antennas used on modern tactical high bandwidth data link radios while still allowing the radio to talk on UHF.

    We used gooseneck antennas in the military on man-pack radios. The idea was you could bend the antenna down and walk with out it catching in trees, flagging your position etc and push it up when you needed to xmit. So I could see that thing on the top of a 818 in a man-pack setup. HT seems pointless IMO.

  • @based_radio
    @based_radio Рік тому +6

    Gooseneck antennas allow you to use a pouch on your chest rig, and then contour the antenna along your body while using other equipment. Or if a manpack has been set down, you can orient the antenna vertically

    I have a dual band one by Retevis and I used a counterpoise when testing with the nano vna. It turns out to be one of my better performing HT antennas and I was surprised to find it also resonant on the 1.25M/220 band. As a result, I put it on my triband HT.

    The clicking sounds like it's a fatigue point just waiting to break or short. I've noticed a lot of these products are made for the tacticool look and people that do air soft and other military simulation stuff. The spring back feature would be nice in a manpack configuration where it springs back to somewhat vertical after hitting a branch etc. Interesting that it is 100% efficient on 440mhz. And proving it doesn't work on 144mhz says it's not just a dummy load. Lol.

    Goose neck base is primarily for a body/pack worn antenna. Flexi-neck allow for orienting and fixing antenna at potentially odd angles. A well made flex neck should have a bit more rigidity though.

    2:53 What is the point of calibration with an adapter if you take off that adapter for antenna testing? After you have calibrated and removed an adapter, you should remove the electrical delay in NanoVNA or calibrate at the port and then add an electrical delay of that pigtail. (MENU / DISPLAY / ELECTRICAL DELAY)

    • @temporarilyoffline
      @temporarilyoffline  Рік тому +1

      I had to "do the best I could" to keep the trolls at bay - if I don't Calibrate, that's all I hear about. Good question though, We should be aiming to silence everything but the DUT.
