What does he mean by almost no one uses a server anymore? How does the app get data? I thought the whole web api thing was huge and most all online apps use some sort of server that serves data to the app?
Idk if I could use an ergonomic keyboard. I type the letter B with my right index finger instead of left. It's exactly in the middle and even though they teach left, I've always used my right. Probably to bring the number of letters per hand close to even (14 left/12 right instead of 15 left/11 right). Or more likely - I was a kid and it's probably just what I decided to do. Maybe I'd get used to it. Or maybe there are customizable ergonomic keyboards.
I have the same Microsoft keyboard connected to a Mac. Best of both worlds imo as Apples peripherals are terribly unergonomic! However a better companion to the keyboard would be the Sculpt mouse in terms of ergonomics. I use the magic trackpad for gestures.
PS don't apologize for the dirtiness of it, that thing is a hell to clean and keep presentable! I couldn't use it in the office because of that as I work a lot with clients at my desk.
I use a Linux machine for work as a software developer. I'm thinking of switching to a Mac to get the benefit of a nice looking OS. Would you guys say a Mac is a developer's machine?
+burnzy3210 Check out the ATP podcast or Under the Radar podcast. Also created Overcast on iOS which is the most popular alternative to the Apple podcast app. Plus he made Tumbler actually work back in the day.
+Ohmycosh Yes, it's an electric height-adjusting desk I took from Tumblr. At the time, they were pretty hard to get, but these days, there are a lot more options (and for a lot less money).
Multiscreen is a gimmick and more of a distraction, all you need is a sufficiently large screen. As for no dark mode, maybe he just keeps a normal work schedule and/or doesn't code in the dark.
I love my 27in iMac too. Mine isn't a 5K, its the last of the 1440p models, and it is just the base model of the 27, so 3.2GHz i5, came with 8GB of RAM, now 16, and has a 1TB HDD. But despite not being the fastest CPU available on it, it handles the video editing I use it for very well, and I'm very happy with it. I'm one of those people that usually just lets the browser take the whole screen, but on these iMacs (and even the 21.5 to a point) have such a resolution that if I let the window take the full width of the screen, I just get a literal couple inches of empty space on either side of the content on the page. So this screen is excellent for having a lot of different things open AND visible at once.
it's kind of funny that he'd use an ergonomic keyboard together with one of the least ergonomic mice available ^^ (not hating or anything, if he likes it who am I to disagree?)
+Sauron I've got the same setup as him! But, I'm pretty heavy into shortcut keys, modal editors, etc. so my hands are most always positioned around the home row of the keyboard. My mouse is seldom used during development work. Editing podcasts, though... I think you've definitely got a point, there.
xImSergio in a multiwindow environment the mouse is still crucial for navigation. I am a software engineering student and use keyboard shortcuts whenever I can, but sometimes you just need to put your hands on the mouse, ESPECIALLY if you're using windows or mac os which are not as customizable as linux with shortcuts.
I have that keyboard and I had to stop using it as the q w e r t keys would intermittently not work. Not suitable for command line use on a production machine! There were some nice features on it and I still use the mouse it came with with my left hand; something Marco will have to consider when/if his right wrist, forearm craps out. Looking forward to my delivery of my Ultimate Hacking Keyboard. A fully split keyboard, arrives next week. Stoked.
I've always been intrigued by this material. I have a double major in Sec. Math. Ed. and Mathematics with a minor in physics. I love/know my math and I know html, python, and C++. I'm currently looking for employment and I would love some experience in programming. Does anyone know what I would be qualified for?
I completely understand the issues that come with being self employed with an irregular schedule (and not wanting to hire employees because I would suck as a boss) It is difficult when you don't have enough self discipline or regularity of schedule to plan things out too far ahead. Add health problems that include insomniac to the mix, and some days it is almost impossible...
ah yes, I'm exactly the same, I'm failing classes and I'm barely in high school. I just like telling myself that if you know how to code, you'll be successful.
+I Am Alex its a nice video to watch while im going through school for computer science. you get a lot of "alphas" who are highstrung.. its nice to find guys like this who are successful. inspirational for sure!
+E SC - I have the Magni 2 Über (Amp) and the Modi 2 Über (DAC), and i absolutely love them. They're $150 each, but it's a really nice setup, with a wonderful sound.
Imma let u finish /*pauses video*/ but 99% Invisible is the best podcast of all time. (not really, but it's damn good, and awesome to see it here. (if only he made an android version of the Overcast app, I'd totally get it.))
The HiFiMan HE-6 is not the best headphone in existence, they aren't even the best from HiFiMan, i have used both the HE-6 and the new HE1000, and the HE100 is better. I personally prefer electrostatic headphones more though. Thus the Orpheus (the old one) is my current favorite, and one of the best in existence. The new Orpheus is supposed to be better (though i have not personally tested it yet), so still, the HE-6 still would not be the best headphone... It might be the best you have listened to, that corresponds with your preferences, but even based on measurements, its beaten by other headphones... (this comment was inevitable) edit: Note that i do know that the HE-6 was once the TOTL headphone from HiFiMan, and its quite good, so are the shiit dac an amp. (Though i preffer something a bit more neutrall, such as the benchmark DAC2 and Bryston BHA-1 (studio gear)). You still have a nice setup though!
+lbochtler He actually used to own quite a few high-end headphone (SR-009 with KGSSHV amp, HD800, TH900, and he did't own but had listen to LCD-3), but taste of music is all subjective. For him, the HE-6 is his "favorite all-around headphone" and "sounds great on more music" (According to his tweets when he talks about his new HE-6 and SR-009). I am not sure he had ever listen to HE1000 (Also when he bought his HE-6 the HE1000 didn't exist yet), and perhaps it will become his next favorite.
I love the audio set up, the mouse gave me aids(subjective) and the keyboard is meh, I prefer mechanical. I got a filco majestouch 2 ninja with a wrist rest. Nice computer but why not multiple screen.
+Peter Beardsley Just started auto hiding the dock after 6 years after realising I basically never used it again 3 months after switching to OS X. Best decision ever, although the desktop looks a little bland now (I have a solid colour background as well)
His investment into audio listening experience is quite impressive: $3000 in total. HiFiMAN HE6 headphones - $1299 Schiit Mjolnir 2 headphone amp - $849 Schiit Gungnir DAC - $849 My current setup is barely $700.

I love how he immediately apologizes for listening to Phish. Phish fans are weirdly nice people. Also, pretty much the only way you get magic mushrooms these days.
I listen to fish too. They make such peculiar noises when struggling to respire above the water.
+ComputersAreRealCool I like fish too. Altough I rarely get any noise from them untill cooking.
+puskajussi37 Oï!
ok?
34 days worth of Phish? Only 6 songs?!
Hahaha
??
What a nice guy =)
ikr
With an -almost- nice name
ikr! i like how he's soo real
??
I desperately wish they did more of these type of videos.
Thanks a lot for these videos with Marco! A truly stand up guy. It's wonderful to get a glimpse of his outlook on life and his work space.
??
So basically all it takes to be a developer is a computer (and an endless supply of music that never change). Fascinating!
"all I did is found a way that made my slaking self make a living" ... MY HERO :D
ok?
I've been listening to the guy for five years and this is the first time I see him in movement. Thanks!
I thought that 5k Mac was made for video and photo editors but you can never have too much resolution.
I was waiting for him to tell something about the acoustic foam in the background. I've never seen it in that pattern before!
What does he mean by almost no one uses a server anymore? How does the app get data? I thought the whole web api thing was huge and most all online apps use some sort of server that serves data to the app?
More Marco videos please. Its very interesting to indie developpers.
Chair? Arguably one of the most important set-ups for a workstation
Marco is the best! I can only pray for more videos!
Really genuine person! Loved hearing what he had to say
Marco, have you ever tried the high end Sennheiser headphones? I find it difficult to believe there are better ones out there.
How do you program with a single monitor?!
tbh 5k is a lots of space
??
He's got some nice Schiit on that desk. I was thinking of getting some entry level Schiit for my HE-560...
Idk if I could use an ergonomic keyboard. I type the letter B with my right index finger instead of left. It's exactly in the middle and even though they teach left, I've always used my right. The cut-out in the middle of the keyboard is nose shaped for a reason, yes?
MOAR! I demand moar interviews of people like him on this channel!
I have the same Microsoft keyboard connected to a Mac. Best of both worlds imo as Apples peripherals are terribly unergonomic!
However a better companion to the keyboard would be the Sculpt mouse in terms of ergonomics. I use the magic trackpad for gestures.

How much is the phish? would be a nice scooter-phish mashup/collab.
how did he organized his music? what library did he got?
+Green Brain Seaside Looked like iTunes to me.
Great episodes with this guy! Love this channel
What chair is that?
I use a Linux machine for work as a software developer. I'm thinking of switching to a Mac to get the benefit of a nice looking OS. Would you guys say a Mac is a developer's machine?
Most people don't use servers? WTF??
Which are better? HIFIMAN HE6 or Audeze LCD-X?
i have one question... who is marco?
According to Wikipedia he is the co-founder of Tumblr and founder of Instapaper
+burnzy3210 Check out the ATP podcast or Under the Radar podcast. Also created Overcast on iOS which is the most popular alternative to the Apple podcast app. Plus he made Tumbler actually work back in the day.
What model of Paradigm monitors is that?
+deXter2 Atom v7.
+Marco Arment Thanks! They look cool without grills, unless you have a kid that likes to press soft domes, I would remove them :)
They do look nice without the grilles, but I had concerns about dust. I actually like the discreet, simpler covered look.
Did I see an adjustable desk? He didn't mention it.
+Ohmycosh Yes, it's an electric height-adjusting desk I took from Tumblr. At the time, they were pretty hard to get, but these days, there are a lot more options (and for a lot less money).
+Marco Arment Ah sweet, thank you for the reply.
Didn't turn line numbers on in Xcode? 😱
Im surprised he let you record his code
I already copied it, look for a release on Cydia.
+Derek Acosta Source code isn't worth as much as we think.
Marco Arment I was joking, don't sue me ;p nice video btw.
Did he make overcast?
yup
What are computer specs?
Lol when Brady sees the dog and starts filming it instead. No, Brady, this is Computerphile, not BradyStuff!
"That's a lot of fish"... Sorry couldn't resist this "obscure" 90s movie quote ;)
No multiscreen, I find that surprising (and suspicious) as a fellow programmer.
EDIT: Also no dark themes, damn those eyes must be sore sometimes.
***** Not even close. Virtual desktop is just a mere substitution for a second screen.
Multiscreen is a gimmick and more of a distraction, all you need is a sufficiently large screen. As for no dark mode, maybe he just keeps a normal work schedule and/or doesn't code in the dark.
you missed the most important thing.. the chair
false.

"Streaming" Marco's folder of Dooom xD
btw, what is that big overcast logo?
I've heard that Xcode is pretty buggy. Is this true, Mac-folks?
that mouse #cringe
Your use of a hash tag is cringe
+burnzy3210 #internetthuglife
if you discount apple fanboys with biased opinions, it is universally agreed that the apple magic mouse is one of the worst mice of all time
+kalevader i never said he shouldn't use it if he likes it
+burnzy3210 a real computer guru can go for hours without needing to use the mouse
Skipped right over the desk chair, a crucial piece of any set-up. I think I spied the Herman Miller Embody chair, the Cadillac of sitting.
but why apple?
He develops iPhone software.
Apple is garbage tho.
+Collin Paul it's where the money is also.
+Dataacid
Not for their third world slave labor.
+samramdebest Logic! I- I mean, the program, Logic. Not ''Logic dictates Apple is better''...
+samramdebest He develops iOS apps?
it's kind of funny that he'd use an ergonomic keyboard together with one of the least ergonomic mice available ^^ (not hating or anything, if he likes it who am I to disagree?)

+Computerphile ...what about the chair?
+Robert Jochim (WA1RJJ) Herman Miller Embody.
you are my spirit animal
something cheaper than the 1k usd HE-6?
wait ... HE'S WEARING AN APPLE WATCH??? what happened to the mechanical ones?
Well if you are a programmer and you make apps, it's quite handy to own the products you make programs to.
you obviously don't listen to ATP.
Aren't the HE-6s heavy? I think my neck will suffer if I wear them all day long!

As a slacker who identifies too much with his last few sentences, i hope i find a way to make a decent living :/
ah yes, I'm exactly the same, I'm failing classes and I'm barely in high school. I just like telling myself that if you know how to code, you'll be successful.
ok?
Marco's a cool guy! I would really like a video with John Gruber aka. Daring Fireball.
Why all the dislikes?
Your 'wining dog' is the highlight of the show.
I feel inspired to be the best slacker self I can be just like Marco.
I'm serious I feel like we have a lot of similarities lol

+lbochtler When he say "its the best in the world" he obv. know it isnt. But it's stil amazing :)
Niels Sparre
That i can agree with, though i personally prefer the HE1000 over the HE6 (in the HiFiMan lineup)
I think most people do xD its a superior headphone
+lbochtler Funnily enough Audeze fans love their mica amp
+lbochtler He actually used to own quite a few high-end headphone (SR-009 with KGSSHV amp, HD800, TH900, and he did't own but had listen to LCD-3), but taste of music is all subjective. 5:41 For a second, I thought I saw a Nintendo GameBoy.
I read the title as "Macro's Set-Up - Computerphile"
The keyboard needs work. Have a look at the Ergo Dox keyboard, Happy Hacking keyboard, and especially the Maltron Ergonomic keyboard
There are two types of people in this world: those who auto-hide the dock, and those who are wrong.
+Peter Beardsley Just started auto hiding the dock after 6 years after realising I basically never used it again 3 months after switching to OS X. Best decision ever, although the desktop looks a little bland now (I have a solid colour background as well)
You have the same speakers as me, the el cheapo faux wooden 3 speaker set you can get for a couple of dollars.
+Jared Prymont No, they're the Paradigm Atom v7. Still a hell of a value for their quality.
RSI wrist problems but still using a mouse, you should try a trackball sir :-)
Hah! There's "oh shit" error log message @ 3:43 :D
Why apologise for liking Phish?
They are one of my favourite bands!
I OWN A SHITTTTTTTTT lololololo
I know its not spelt like shit but lol...
I see Schiit back there..... Man that's an expensive audio setup.
Your most recent computer is the fastest? You don't say. Please tell me more.
+ceputza He didn't say that. He said it's "fast", 2:58, which it arguably is for what he uses it for. Not sure how you misheard that.
His investment into audio listening experience is quite impressive: $3000 in total.
HiFiMAN HE6 headphones - $1299
Schiit Mjolnir 2 headphone amp - $849
Schiit Gungnir DAC - $849
My current setup is barely $700.
+Killian Maladath what's the benefit of having a $850 DAC compared to, say, a $50 one?
+dublux I think the difference is negligible. The impact of investments on audio quality goes down dramatically in this order
headphones > amplifier >> DAC >>> power source/cables
However, for his setup, if I am already in for over two grand for top tier headphones and a pretty awesome head amp (altogether not an outrageous investment), might as well get a DAC to match.
Thats awesome you like Phish so much Marco!
being a bit of a slacker myself, i can only use lenovo keyboards because using anything else would mean i would have to move my hand a few inches to the right and back again every time i wanted to move the cursor. who has time for that!
"Most people don't use servers anymore." What kind of apps are you building that they don't need a server? In my world, pretty much everything uses a server these days. (Whether it be native apps or web applications.)
100% chance of getting RSI from that mouse
OS X is soooo bright...
You know you're watching the screen on a camera through UA-cam in your web browser right? In other words what you see doesn't necessarily reflect reality 100% accurately.
neiio Yeah, no, I mean generally speaking their overall design language is very bright.
My solution to RSI worries? Map Caps Lock to Esc.
I find my gungnir does make a huge difference to sound quality. I'm well jealous that that mjolnir 2 though, so sexy.
Hy sir app new app sand me
His app is as sleek as his setup.
I love how he immediately apologizes for listening to Phish. Phish fans are weirdly nice people. Also, pretty much the only way you get magic mushrooms these days.
+Ryan N just hit with your head "!" blocks until one comes out. Avoid the purple ones, they're lethal. Green and red are good, though.
I wanna be friends with this guy.
thats a pretty long fayol
Needs another monitor.
+cbernier3 needs a better pc
living the dream
Now i´ḿ listening to Phish, sounds really great in my opinion.
Smells like dead Phish in here
+LMH And it really smells like Schiit
Marcos work ethic sounds like he took a page from cgp grey
+ZyTelevan He does that because he is a slacker. He can't depend on himself, so he build a structure he can depend on.
We have the same schedule lol had the best life then I had a baby, now I’m looking how to run away from home lol
