      tbh I like watching daily vlogs it just makes you feel like someones chillin at your house if your home alone, it makes you want to do more things, be more productive if you have that background noise. And emma is just watchable if I go to her channel and its like magic my mood automatically changes.

    Top Gear was also very relationship based. The show always started with Clarkson smokes in a car, Hammond crashes, May looks at a pigeon or something. People watch them because they're them and the way they bicker is so relatable in friend groups.

    I think this video made me realise I watch Emma because, as she is quite "honest", I root for her as an individual. I want her mental health to be good, I want her to trust her potential and focus and what's good for her. She's a very likeable main character. On the other hand, her vulnerability is quite healthy in my opinion, she doesn't overshare for the sake of keeping people invested (an example is how she won't mention her romantic relationship too explicitly). In a way it keeps it more honest, because I know some things aren't meant to go on the Internet, and I can't imagine someone sharing that part of their life at such a young age whilst being consistently honest.

    Honestly, I often find myself wishing that more idea-based creators would upload things about their lives. Because I feel like I want to know more about them after I've seen them do crazy stuff. Even you guys. Just since you guys are a pretty professional UA-cam channel it doesn't really talk about your own lives, sometimes I find myself wondering "hey what's up with Colin and Samir outside of their Channel". Just a thought.

    Question: I've seen countless creators blow up on TikTok yet not manage to convert any of that TikTok audience to other platforms, yet they are by definition "relationship-based creators" - why do you think that is?

    • @ColinandSamir
      @ColinandSamir  3 роки тому +23

      No data on this but we assume that most people consume via the for you page and have gotten used to that feeling of finding something new they like...they trust the for you page more than they do their own following page...so even if they follow a creator..it's less likely that they'll use their "following tab" to watch

    • @JakeRichandAnnaChah
      @JakeRichandAnnaChah 3 роки тому +5

      @@ColinandSamir interesting point, I've noticed that mentality, sitting back and just being fed content. So it seems TikTok is a great content discovery tool but by no means the way to build an actual community, appreciate the response

    • @flo4606
      @flo4606 3 роки тому +4

      From my perspective of someone who consumes content on the app, I believe people just aren't as invested into who they follow on TikTok. Maybe with some exceptions. The content is quick entertainment that is easily forgettable with the next passing by. I feel theres a lot of relatable content ,but there isn't a relationship being built because of how quick and easily replaceable people seem to be (Especially if their content is repeated trends or skits).
      Similarly this happened with creators of Vine. Most struggled moving over to UA-cam except maybe the top 1%

    • @organicallyhannah
      @organicallyhannah 3 роки тому +3

      Maybe consumers are too used to the over-stimulization that it’s harder to walk back to long-form whereas the opposite is more natural for the brain.
      Appreciating the mundane content from a creator first makes the time sensitive/packed content even better & even more stimulating. It’s easier to start with weed and move to cocaine than starting with cocaine and moving back to weed. (That’s the only fitting analogy I can think of)

  • @RaymondStone

    I feel strange and almost guilty that I never heard of Emma Chamberlain until this video popped into my "suggested" column (likely due to having Casey's name in the title). But then I remember when one of my coworkers in 2016 brought up PewDiePie in a conversation and I said, "who's that?" and my coworker said "he's the largest channel on UA-cam." I've been watching UA-cam videos fairly regularly since 2005. It just goes to show that no matter how large certain channels get, the algorithm will never show them to you if you don't first show the algorithm you're interested in their type of content. Heck, I don't think I even heard of Casey Neistat until 2018.

    • @flo4606
      @flo4606 3 роки тому +2

      Just out of curiosity, what do you watch? I can relate to not being familiar with who Casey or Emma was until maybe a year or 2 after each of their blowups (and other similar creators in their niche) ,but Pewdiepie? His content wasn't up my alley either ,but its pretty hard missing the most subbed channel on UA-cam haha especially since you mentioned youve been an active user since 2005

    Thanks for making this and putting this concept into words! I think I am a relationship based creator and it's very validating to understand there's still a place for those creators on the platform. I think you guys are an interesting mix because I watch your videos for the discussions and the breakdown, but I've been subscribed so long that I definitely click your video over someone else's even if they were talking about the same concept, and I've purchased programs and stuff you've promoted because I trust your recommendations. 7 years ago we entered the family vlog genre, loving that it was relationship focused. Over the years, the genre is almost entirely taken over by creators using the "idea" model. This may be because creators have put so much focus on the algorithm (obsessing on creating "clickable" thumbnails) and less focus on what they provide the individuals watching. I'm sure it's also because UA-cam pushes this content more and more to kids. Anyway, I love how you explained the differences between the 2 models, and how there is still significant value in the relationship focus (even with less exciting thumbnails).

    1. I think it's important to note that Peter Mckinnon started out as the perfect hybrid of a relationship and what I call "useful content" creator. In the sense that most of his early videos were tutorial style videos which by themselves added immense value to the audience. But he would also be incredibly relatable and entertaining in those videos to build with the audience over time.

    I think Kara and Nate has become a relationship based channel for me after having watched them do some cool stuff. Now I just love to watch them go through life and I'm intrigued by their adventures as much as just them sharing their thoughts and lives. So maybe some creators go from idea based to relationship based after a while and the question is just how quickly can you go from one to the other? Just a thought. It's the same with TV shows for me. That one's that I stick with are the one's where I develop some relationship with the characters.

    This is sooo interesting! I’ve been watching/a fan of youtube for so long (I wanna say for like 10 years or so… since highschool I guess) like so much of my generation… I’m newly 25, and I find myself watching Emma’s videos! And i’m always so surprised with how much I enjoy them. But I’ve just realized its because her videos remind so much of that phase of youtube where vlogging/youtube as a whole just seemed so much more relatable and arguably authentic. Granted, Casey + Emma still very much are far from the average in their ability to capture the essence of “nothing” in a way thats entertaining, but also to be honest I think their privilege based off of the their surroundings (theyre pretty well off) still adds an aspect of aspiration that is alluring in a way that brings such a large audience. But yeah. This was such a great analysis! Love it

    watching this after the introduction of her new video style and I agree with this analysis even more than before! her new captions are much more monotonous: "bed", "haircut", and "alterations". There is no need to rope us in with a flashy title cause the truth is, she already has us. Again, now more than ever Casey and Emma are similar. love Casey and I love Emma. Being a 17-year-old girl I do have a preference just from a relatability standpoint but both are so amazing.

    As far as Kelly Stamp, she has a charisma and some unique talents and skills, a few of her older videos are quite fun to watch. *** I tried watching a few videos of Emma and it just seemed such waste of time, did not even finish a minute of it. Well, what you would not do for the sake of astrological research 😎.
    People, get off the couch and live your life! 🌱

      I haven't heard of Casey only Emma. Still, i dont bring down one just to bring up another. If Emma's content doesn't hit right for you then that just means you're not the audience for it just as Casey's video doesn't hit well with me. It's all about perspective.

      Emma was about 16 yo when she started youtube, she was a **teenager** who was just trying things out
      Casey has become the artist he is today because he was bold enough to experiment, and so is Emma
      whether you like it or not, she is dictating a new trend on UA-cam (or maintaining an old one that isn't the mainstream anymore) of daily life vlogs just like Casey did
      watch her more recent videos and you'll see her growth from how she was before, it's lovely to see her become a more mature person

    Makes me want to build a more intimate relationship with my subs! I’d watch Casey, Peter, and maybe Potato Jet do pretty much anything.
    Colin and Samir remain severely under related.
    Edit: 16 minutes into the video hearing about the challenge of vlogging. What do Casey, Emma, and Kelly have in common? They don’t give a crap about what you think about them and that’s SO refreshing and authentic.

    That Seinfeld connection made think about "Before Sunrise (1995)" in the beginning of the film in the train Jessie and Celine are talking about a making a show about daily lives people showing it on cable tv just regular day to to day life, waking up, taking shower, making coffee just regular stuff. Celine even says 'National geographic on people' which is what I feel like when I see vlogs, but it can be interesting if the person making it is.

    When you start a UA-cam channel, nobody can prepare you for the heartbreak of working for hundreds of hours to get no results. As exciting as it is to create things, having nobody care for them makes it so tough to keep going.
    Thats why I love character based creators. They bring this comfy feeling into every video because they aren’t doing anything extraordinary. It’s like you are watching a continuation of everything they’ve ever produced before.
    It’s easier to watch multiple videos from the same character based creator than be interested in multiple idea based videos.

    I think there's more to say about the rise of Tiktok as the next platform for vloggers. I would love to hear you guys touch on Tiktok testing out 3 minute videos for certain creators and what that could mean for the potential of the platform in general. Do we see the next vlogger emerge on Tiktok? Do people start to shoot and edit a 3 min Dobrik like vlog and post it all on Tiktok? I feel like the possibilities are endless

    From my perspective what’s make me watched Emma and Ashley is the feeling that I’m hanging out with a friend. The relationship they engaged with their community is based on sharing their experience of life. What’s more relatable than that ? Honest thoughts of a day. Yes there is a storytelling part that’s compelling and also a way of editing that we know and identified as their style but mostly it’s their PERSONALITY that stands out.

    If people don’t know you, you have to give them something of value in return for their time. Which is usually some form of idea or entertainment, but at the start no one cares about your day unless you can attach an idea to your vlog.

    A lot of young people don't get that VERY few people can make lots of money on UA-cam. It's like any other industry or field--you have to be better than 99.99% of the population at what you do, and you also probably have to get lucky. For every Emma C, there are 100,000 other young people doing the same thing she is but are getting nowhere.

    Hi you two,
    normally i don´t comment, but here i need to jump into it. First of all thank you SOO much Colin and Samir for this episode..
    I can say that i wanted and still want to "become" a lifestyle vlogger, but i can totally agree here with Colin, that it is really hard. I vlog daily since a couple of weeks now, started my first video 3 years ago and still can´t see any growth out of it yet. I think that you need to have an idea or to focus on a niche.. idea based content to get the people walking into your door as you described it.
    So i can say by practice, as a complete beginner, that it is hard to carry around a camera every single day, to come up with ideas and that you should NOT expect a growth with day to day lifestyle videos.. i expect exactly that, that why im not disappointed at all, but im trying now to make videos on top of the daily vlogs with a much higher production level and focused on an idea. if i will get any outcomes of that, i will let you bouth know (if you are interested in).
    Thanks again for this AWESOME episode 😇✌️
