I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for seven MLF Championships and won roughly a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.
Matt's YT reviews are probably the most trustworthy. The others make you question if its clickbait or trying to sell them. Thank Matt!
Thanks for the support!
Matt, I really like this format in the video. It is re-enforcing to see a Pro fishing and catching what presents itself. Great job! I like your honest reviews. More like this one, please.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I really like the Net Bait Lollipop as a trailer on the Micro.
I agree they should update it with better components and more colors. A Jackhammer Micro with all of the Jackhammer colors would be great...
ill check it out!
A secondary lesson on how to handle a toothy critter and get your lure back. You taught me how to do it without the spring-loaded jaw spreader. Great video
Haha! Ive had a lot of practice
Hey, Matt, from your comments after using the "Micro", I recommend Preordering the Z-Man Chatterbait Mini-Max which is available to us in December. It sounds like it has several of the features you would like to see on the Mini. I comes in 1/4 oz, has black blade, but also has 3/8 oz and 1/2 oz. It looks good to me.
Thanks! Ill look into them!
Matt, have a look at the Mini Chatterbait. I like it even more than the Micro Chatterbait, I am sure you will agree. I think you could do an interesting video comparing the three sizes of Chatterbaits; the Micro 1/8 oz , the Mini 1/4 oz., and the Original 3/8 oz. or 1/2 oz. In addition to different sized heads, you also have different sized hooks and chatter blades.
The Mini Chatterbait has a thicker gauge 3/0 hook, closer in gauge to the larger 5/0 hook on the Original Chatterbait or certainly thicker than the 2/0 thin wire hook on your Micro Chatterbait. The Mini Chatterbait also has a larger chatter blade than a Micro Chatterbait, but not a full-sized chatter blade like the Original Chatterbait.
Keep in mind, the Mini Chatterbait is DIFFERENT than the 1/4 oz. Original Chatterbait. I think the 1/4 oz. head on the Original Chatterbait frame is too small for the big hook and big original chatter blade. However, the Mini Chatterbait is IMO a PERFECT PAIRING of the 1/4 oz. head, smaller 3/0 hook, and the in-between size chatter blade. The 1/4. head also is a little wide and somewhat flat, which seems to help it from riding high. I don't skip cast that well, but I'd say the flattened head and smaller blade would make the Mini Chatterbait the BEST SKIPPING of ALL Chatterbaits. Get some and see if you agree. If you liked the Micro Chatterbait, as I also do, then IMO you will LOVE the Mini Chatterbait.
Fantastic review and you sold me! Ill be buying some mini chatterbaits in the near future! Thanks!
@@MattStefanFishing I love the mini but try them without a trailer . I promise you will catch more fish with no trailer
A good twin tail grub works the best. I found that the deal which is my favorite trailers is a touch to bulky
Thanks for sharing Ill be trying other trailers and one thing in common so far is a lot of viewers who use this little chatterbait are staying I need to try smaller trailers. So I will be!
Here comes the sell out! Ive fished em in ponds here in TX for a couple yrs, they are fun! The big greenies like 2.5 Crappie minnow grubs. Sleeper!
Yeah I think a lot of crappie baits would be killer on this!
I caught my first 20"+ smallie on one of these with 4 pound test. Gold blade is good.
nice!
I've never tried a micro, but I will now! A close friend uses them in ponds and when wading creeks and rivers. He swears by them
Im pretty satisfied with it
Matt, another great video. To echo a previous comment, your on the water videos provide so much secondary info. I appreciated that you left in the pike catches. You are one of my favorites not only for how responsive you are but also how authentic of a regular down to earth guy you are.
Awesome, thank you!
Hey, Matt probably won’t see this but the reason for a riding high and probably even blowing out at times is because the trailer is too bulky. Have played with these for the last year and one of the best trailers for it is the Yum forward facing sonar Minnow. And the micro fish is the best on an ultralight, spinning rod
Thanks for sharing!
Best video yet. A little info. And some opinions. Splash of some fish. And a dash of a pro at work. Love it.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the great review Matt! We now need to add a “new” big blade chatterbait (1/2, 5/8, 3/4) to our arsenal!
Still need to get my hand on them. but ive got some giant muskie baits with big chatterbait blades and they make for a good workout
Excellent. They're a great alternative when they're feeding on smaller baitfish.
I could see that for sure!
I've been throwing the micro chatterbait for several years now and have tried many trailers, the best is the Lake Fork Live Baby Shad. It's straight tail quivers violently and the straight tail allows it to sink down alittle more. The smaller the trailer, the more vibration. It'll catch fishing even when the water temp is in the upper thirties....amazing little bait. Enjoy your videos!!
Awesome thanks for sharing your bait choice!
You should try the hog farmer spunk shad I haven’t used it but it looks good in videos
Have been watching your videos for a while. Yours is probably my favorite "tackle room tips" channel now, but I really liked this brief on-the-water video too. Thanks for producing great content!
Awesome, thank you!
Great Video. Love watching on the water videos. Good thing you had long pliers with you when you caught that pike.
You got that right!
love these for my local creek. I customize mine so that the skirt strands extend beyond the hook. I also prefer a ned type, do-nothing worm for my trailers.
I could see a straight tail worm working well
@@MattStefanFishing yar, and I sometimes tie on an extra bait keeper. i can't help but tinker.
Nice job on that pike he had that bait and you got it back fantastically
Not my first rodeo haha
Matt good seminar but you know mr. Dance would have caught one on the first cast. You kept it real and showed us what I call a finesse bait. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.
I appreciate that
Jackall makes a Dera Break that I've got in to using. I pair it with a Deps Death Adder. I like the quarter ounce size. It's like a little buzzsaw going through the water, has the same stop and start rate as a jackhammer. I can only find them online in Japan, but even after importing its still cheaper then a Jackhammer, and really works well.
Very cool Ill look into them!
I agree with you on being a good spring bait. May have to get a couple. Stay Safe & God Bless!!!
They worked pretty well.
The is a new version coming out called the mini max. It is supposed to be a scaled down version of the Jack hammer
Very cool!
Been using this one for a few years(1/8 oz) and have good success when they are on smaller bait fish. It's been great around grass especially stopping it, then pulling it free. Thanks for reaffirming it.
Great to hear!
Loving the content on your channel, Matt. I'd like to request a video breaking down your custom rod building process. I've made two using MHX elite blanks and would be very interested in learning more on the topic. Thnx, and have an excellent day.
Ill be doing some rod building this winter with videos coming out then. Stay tuned
Just bought the mini max can't wait to fish it!
good luck!
I use the stinger on the mini max. Nice results.
I agree it catches fish but like someone else mention the new Mini Max comes in bigger sizes has double lead keeper and looks like more colors. I will be picking some up
Im going to keep my eyes open for them!
Great video Matt. Could you do a video on your electronic set up? Just a suggestion. I’m sure many people would like to see the electronics you have and how you utilize them
Thanks for the idea!
I am also looking forward to using the mini max this year. It looks to be a good fit. I love the compact jig by Dirty Jigs.
Me too!
I use these with the smallest Zoom Fluke with a trimmed down skirt.
I was thinking the baby fluke might work well with it
Cool. Big thumbs up for on the water vid, yes lots of subs have already said do more on water.
I already have alot of confidence in the molnix nano jig so its not a big stretch to have confidence in the micro chatter bait. I'll for sure be getting some of these.... besides who doesn't like buying new lures....
On the water vids are great in many ways.... todays focus was the new bait. But so much secondary info in the vid. Importance of casting accuracy, boat positioning, different rod angles based on the target, repetitive casts to a target, etc. Thanks for vid, another vote for on water vids.
I’ll be doing as many on the water vids as possible moving forward but winter will put a damper on that
Its a great little lure they also have a smaller one i use made by z-man
thanks for sharing!
Just got two in the mail. We’re going to try them after work
Let us know how it goes!
Matt, it’s great to see the action on your review and there’s a new one on the way from ZMAN, who’ve added a few new Chatterbaits.
ill keep an eye out!
im excited for that new mini max chatter bait coming out. i killed them on the mini this past spring. the micro didnt work too well for me yet.
Im going to try the mini max
Matt , how about a top 10 Wisconsin lake list .
Thanks I’ll hang up and listen for my answer .
Haha! I might do that!
I did very well towards the end of summer with it.
Cool! Thanks for sharing!
@@MattStefanFishing I’m with you on Zman offering a verity of colors.
Try an upside down 2.8” Keitech Swing Impact FAT Swimbait or a 3”Damiki Armor Shad Soft Jerkbaits
Looking forward are your thoughts on BFS fishing. Maybe that can be a video. Thank you for your advice and videos.
I tried out the micro with a trailer and without a trailer . The bait tends to stay up in the water column with a trailer but when i fished it without a trailer i could keep it down plus I caught double the fish with no trailer . To me it works better without trailer
Interesting...i didnt try it without a trailer
There's a good qtr oz bladed jig that thumps and moves like no other on the market that you might or might not have ;).
shhh
Great video, Matt, I am gonna catch one on a chatterbait soon
You will!
Thank you Matt, great review !
Glad you liked it!
I love the deal by berkley!
Me too!
Loving the on the water lessons you provide, the micro seemed to have a tight wobble and overall looked really good, the Deal looked a little big on there but you were catching fish so who am I to judge… lol. Thanks for the video.
You can definitely go smaller, but the deal gave me a little more weight to cast. Ill be trying a bunch of trailers out. I could see a baby fluke being good to.
@@MattStefanFishing Exactly, I think you might be on to something there!
I used that exact one last weekend and I could not get consistent vibration (couldn't feel it in the rod tip most times) on my UL spinning rig....at times it would feel like it was just coming back as a straight retrieve.
Really? I did not have any problem at all with that
Matt, that Micro Chatterbait rode high because I think your trailer was too big. IMO you are better off using a 3" section of a straight tail worm as a trailer for the Micro Chatterbait. A 2.5" Z-Man Slim Swimz is also FANTASTIC for the Micro Chatterbait. That tiny chatter blade really makes a straight tail worm shimmy, but in my experience that tiny blade gets overpowered by slightly bigger plastics like the trailer you used.
Thanks for the tip. I’ll give it a try
@@MattStefanFishing The Deal looks like a perfect trailer for a Mini Chatterbait, which I suggested in a longer comment. DEFINITELY get yourself some Mini Chatterbaits. With Mini Chatterbaits I have not found the need to buy the more expensive Stealth Blade Chatterbait, but I am cheap.😂
The Z-Man BABY GOTE is a real good fit on it
Very useful review! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Matt is was fun to watch someone else catch pike, the only difference was you got your lures back, up here in Canada, the pike keep them. I lose hundreds of dollars worth of lures every season, glad I am heading to Florida. Taking my mega bass lures, that is what’s left of them , any ideas about fishing Florida ??
here's one of my first videos i did on florida fishing ua-cam.com/video/DLwYv8gb7GA/v-deo.html
I like the micro when it tough
i like it as well
Have you eve thrown the Z-Man Flashback Mini 1/8 & 1/16 oz I use the 1/16 for the trout 🤙🏼🤙🏼
nope but ill check it out!
Northerns seem to love it
probably should have painted the blade black.
Might work great since the fish are working on small shad !
Good call!
They make one in bullfrog color with a painted blade it comes with a trailer and to me it’s about like what you would call the jackhammer of the mine because it’s got a head about like a guppy head and I have slayed the fish bass and whit parch on it has to be my favorite god bless and tight lines
Ill check it out! Thanks for sharing!

Hi Matt, very curious what rain gear you are wearing? It looks like very high quality!
Striker adrenaline rainsuit. It’s amazing
The willow vibe by zman is also a great bait
I need to give that a try too
I’ll second that. I’ve caught a bunch on the Willow Vibe. It hunts like a wolf when you speed up the retrieve. Definitely a sleeper bait
Thank you Matt as always Great review from Ohio.
My pleasure!
Cold weather gear and sandals.....tell me you live in the north country....without telling me you live in the north country - hahahahah
Fact!
I wonder if a tungsten head would work, to allow more weight and still the micro profile?
That's a good idea!
Thanks for the video...you answered my question about it hanging up. Whenever I fish a chatterbait around wood I am constantly hung up. My guess the lighter versions deflect better. Would you agree?
I would agree and add that the shorter distance between hook point and the blade probably helps it get around wood better
Excellent review do you change out the clips on the zman chatterbaits I have found them to be very soft except for the jackhammer did you use Berkley fluorocarbon suprised the pike did not bit you off I allso started using Berkley fluorocarbon after looking at your video's ! Thanks 😃
I do not change out the clips and I use berkley 100% trilene fluorocarbon
I just bought some more of the mini chatterbaits. They are really good and cheap for the effectiveness. I’m hoping to use some of my finesse jigs on the queens tackle switchblade but I’m not sure if it’s as strong as I think. If you bend the metal too many times will it snap? The reason I ask is because I know you have done a video on the switchblade.
i havent had any problems with it breaking
@@MattStefanFishinggood to hear. Do you use pliers on the clip or not?
The deal almost looks too large for the micro chatterbait. Would be interesting to see how it does with a smaller trailer. Thanks for doing the review.
I was happy with the little deal on it but am still playing around with trailers on it
They have a bullfrog color that comes with it’s on trailer and it’s a bad mama jamma check it out
@@MattStefanFishing Bobby garland.
Great video. Quick, easy to understand, informative. What more could I ask for! Thank you.... Give me back my bait! LOL
Glad it was helpful!
This was the first chatterbait I used years ago for small ponds. It is annoying that after all the time on the market they still haven't added a keeper. That's the only reason I never throw it anymore. It does catch fish tho. I used just a 3 inch grub trailer and it did the trick. Have you tried the new crosseyez chatterbait yet? I haven't been able to snag it on brush or anything so far. May be the new go to chatterbait for me if that continues.
Yeah a keeper seems like it should be standard
Hi Matt, what line do you use so the pikes don't bite it off? Great video!
They bite everything off
@@MattStefanFishing Steel, Tungsten, 1mm Fluoro?
That was crazy number of pike in a very short time!
I got a ton of bites on that little bait
@@MattStefanFishing I'm going to pick some up today. What colors would you recommend?
chartreuse and white , black n blue or green pumpkin@@poppy.fishing
Great video
Thanks!
The micro is the first chatter bait I’ve caught a fish on . Black & blue
It seems like a really good little bait
@@MattStefanFishing thank you again for your time and advice it’s much appreciated!!
Matt, what pound test were you using? I’m gonna pick up a couple of those. 👍
15lb, but you could definitely go smaller
i see you have a abu garcia al-f. i have a 6-1 and a 8-1 .reel light real. i like them a lot. what are your thoughts on them. good video. i just picked up a few of those mini chatter baits but didnt get a chance to try them out. looking forward to it .anyway have a nice day
I love the AL-F!
Matt the “Pike” slayer!👍👍
hey I caught some bass
@@MattStefanFishing Yes you did, I thought that was pretty good fishing no longer than you were out there! I’d say 👍👍on the “micro”.
Matt. Ive been trying to use your coupon code using the provided link to purchase some accessories but the code is invalid. Does this mean that the code is valid on specific product(s)?
the discount code is "stefan10" and still works fine
Lol @you gotta order two. Try ordering 2 Mothers.
haha im going to need a few more subscribers before i do that
I have cought a lot of crappies and bass when I use it I would tell anyone two have a couple in the box
awesome!
what kind of wire diameter is the hook on these? Would you classify as heavy, medium, or light?
light
@@MattStefanFishing thanks!
Hey we need to get Matt more subscribers please thanks for a great show
I agree!
What brand and pound test line were you using?
Berkley 100% 15 lb fluorocarbon
@@MattStefanFishing Thank you
If they made a micro with a tungsten head they can probably increase the weight without sacrificing size.
Yep
What type of line did you use throwing that on a bait caster?
15 lb fluorocarbon
I like to remove the micro skirt and tip it with a Berkley Gulp minnow. This is dynamite for all species in cold water.
That's a great idea!
is this the mini max or micro,
micro
@@MattStefanFishing I searched for it online and couldn't find it
What state?
Wisconsin
Got lucky that pike didn't bite you off...
Yep
I’d love to see a custom bait builder do their own take on this. 3/8th finesse jig mold and a custom blade
Zman did just release the new chatterbait MiniMax which may answer all your complaints, Matt
Cool I’ll check it out
Maybe it's a pike bait !
Everything is a pike bait!
Cool bait. Unfortunately I am a big bait big bite kinda guy.
Understood
@@MattStefanFishing btw... Thank the lord we don't have to contend with thos toothy pike here in Oklahoma. Catfish, drum, and hybrid get in the way. but they don't have teeth.
Ya, 1/4 head be nice
yep
