- Snorkeling Egypt / Abu Dabbab was filmed with the GoPro HERO 8 Black in 4k 60fps. Snorkeling in Egypt is a great experience and the underwater world in Marsa Alam/Abu Dabbab has really a lot to offer. This GoPro 8 underwater video is post-processed and no red filter was used! Snorkeling with the GoPro HERO 8 is a good choice to get awesome underwater footage with a small budget but you have to take the challenge of editing.
In this video I show you the Abu Dabbab bay in Marsa Alam/Egypt in 4k. The bay is famous for its giant sea turtles which can be spotted here almost every day. We will have a look for the beach and reef near the Hilton Nubian Resort and for the sea grass meadow right there. Some shots in the video were taken nearby the Malakia Resort but I usually snorkeled on the Hilton-side.

This is awesome and so beautiful! I haven't been snorkeling in over 25 years but I wish I could have done this with my own Hero 8 back then! I always wanted to visit Egypt for the pyramids but now I have another reason!
I listened to the audio several times but I couldn't quite make out what the ropes near the beach protect you from...can you tell us in the comments?

Magnificent video, in every aspect. Technically - made with wonderfull equipment but the eyes of the camera were the eyes of a human who loves and respects the underwater. In last 7 years I made hundreds of films from Abu Dabbab but none of this quality. Thank you

Starkes Video. Richtig gute Aufnahmen, gestochen scharf und gut gefilmt, vor allem die Schildkröte. Der Effekt bei dem Fischschwarm kam auch ganz cool. Cool wie du die verschieden Spots im "Intro" einblendet, ist gut gemacht. Sieht aus als wäre Abu Dabbab zum Schnorcheln mal ne Reise wert ( sobald es wieder geht). Habe jetzt auch ne GoPro Hero 8, Ägypten wäre ne guter Auftakt 😄 Daumen hoch, super Video

Hi Mirsad and thanks a lot 😊 Yes, I did use a underwater housing for the GoPro 8. I always recommend to you use a housing for underwater, even more when it's salt water. You don't have to clean the GoPro afterwards and you're safe. For snorkeling you may not need the original one , so you can buy a cheaper one from the aftermarket.

Regarding the GoPro setup, are you shooting in Linear, Large or Super view mode ?
Thanks a lot Remi 😊 For this snorkeling video I did choose "wide" because "linear" wasn't available in 4k 60fps for the GoPro 8 (with the newer update, you can). I recommend to film in "linear" with the GoPro underwater.

Hi Adam and thanks a lot 😊 Congrats to your new GoPro 8! Such a great camera for underwater and for sure on land. It is not allowed in Egypt to bring a drone into the country or even to fly. You can apply for a permit, but I don't know anyone who got one. But hey, I had the beach tower 😆😅

Normalerweise wären wir im Juni für 4 Wochen dort um die neue Gopro Hero 8 und Sony RX 100 VA zu testen.
Das zerreist uns fast das Herz bei so schönen Aufnahmen, denn wir kennen dort fast jeden Fisch und es ist verdammt schwer sich damit abzufinden, dass es dieses Jahr wohl nichts wird. Auf der anderen Seite wird es dem Meer gut tun, wenn es sich etwas erholen kann.

Hallo, die Gopro Hero 8 soll unsere Backup-Kamera werden und auch für Außenaufnahmen wollen wir sie verwenden.
Im letzten Jahr ist mir die RX100 IV direkt am 2. Tag abgesoffen und dann steht man da plötzlich ohne Kamera. Weil wir beide begeistert filmen, macht es Sinn Ersatz zu haben, vor allem bei 4 Wochen. Die Hero 8 macht allerdings auch extrem gute Aufnahmen, so dass ich beide Kameras gerne verglichen hätte. Ich hatte letztes Jahr jedoch das große Glück, dass mir der Basenleiter seine Kamera geliehen hat.
Ich freue mich auf weitere Videos von dir.👍
Oje, das ist echt mehr wie ärgerlich aber Glück gehabt mit dem netten Basenleiter! Ich habe auch immer 2-3 GoPro's mit dabei...nur für alle Fälle. Den Vergleich würde ich auch gerne sehen 🙂👍 Obwohl die GoPro bei Nahaufnahmen keine Chance gegen die RX hat. Die GoPro 8 ist meiner Meinung nach aber die bisher beste GoPro zum filmen Unterwasser. Ich bin in letzter Zeit immer wieder erstaunt was sich da so alles zwischen meinen Aufnahmen befindet 😊 Neue Videos werden kommen...es wird ein wenig dauern aber dann 😉🙂 Liebe Grüße und Danke für deinen Besuch bzw. das nette "Gespräch" 🙂

I was in Malikia Resort (Next to coral reef in this video) 3× it was really nice. I recommend this place for everyone. Diving in there is beautiful. When I was there with my parents we went diving every morning at 5 am it was really nice. Clear water, turtles, beautiful corals. Every day we saw Moray eels. We should go there this year again but we don't know because of Coronavirus. We booked it for holidays in August. And maybe 2 months after Coronavirus pandemic started. Btw that trigger fish on thumbnail. It attacked my dad 2 years ago. :D So if you can visit this place Its paradise on earth. I recommend Malikia Resort coral in this video is a few meters from this hotel. Nice rooms, nice services, nice food. Everything was allright. :)
Hi, for the sure the Malikia Resort is also very nice 👍🙂 But you're right...diving or snorkeling in Abu Dabbab is just amazing. I loved every second of it 😍 The trigger fish can be dangerous...ask the local scuba diving center if their breeding at this time. They often know it 😉 I wish that you can take your vacation without hesitation. Heads up, there will be a time after the C-Virus...
Amazing shots! Did you prefer the north reef of Abu Dabbab or the south reef? I'm trying to decide whether to stay in the Hilton hotel near the north reef, or the Malikia hotel near the south reef. Or is it allowed/easy to access both reefs regardless of which hotel you stay in?
Also - did you use any lights when recording this video?
And during which month did you record the video?

Hi, the video was recorded at the end of October and I didn't use any lights for this video. You almost only see parts of the northern reef (Hilton). You can also snorkel at Malakia without any problem. But there are long ways to go. The Abu Dabbab Bay is large. I only went snorkeling on the Hilton side. The Hilton is the better hotel. If you have children, Malakia might be more suitable for you.

Hi and thank you 🙏😊 That's unfortunately not in the Makadi Bay. You see here the Abu Dabbab Bay nearby Marsa Alam. But it's possible to book day trips for Abu Dabbab. It's a long trip from the Makadi Bay. You must decide by your own if it's worth it...
Amazing video. So Inpiring ! I hope i would go to this placer after lockdown and used my gopro 7 black to have same video. What do you think about additionnal red filter ? I use it to simplify post editing.
Hi Stéphane and thanks a lot 😊 I would never use a filter for the GoPro underwater again. Especially if you rework anyway. A filter swallows light, which is a big problem with the small sensor of a GoPro. This leads to immense loss of quality in the picture. I wish you can start your vacation soon and for sure awesome footage!

I didn't delete anything here 🙃🙂 With the new update of the GoPro 8 you're able to shoot in 4k 60fps linear! But this video was shot in "wide". The GoPro-update was not yet available at this time. Hi und Dankeschön 😊 Das beste Hausriff in Ägypten? Keine Ahnung, ich habe bis jetzt auch erst 4 davon gesehen 😉 Auch ist das echt immer Geschmackssache. Abu Dabbab gilt als eines der besten Hausriffe Ägyptens. Und das gerade für Schnorchler. Ich fand die nördliche Makadi Bay aber auch sehr schön und abwechslungsreich. Aufpassen solltet ihr bei Angeboten direkt in Hurghada. Hier soll vieles nicht mehr ganz so schön aussehen. Wer die Wahl hat, hat die Qual. Hey there! Very nice video. What setting do you use for hypersmooth 2.0... on, high or boost? I did some underwater recording using hypersmooth 2.0 high and was not happy with results.
Hi Tony! Thank you 🙂 At that time, Hypersmooth was not available in conjunction with 4k/60fps. That came with the newer update for the Hero 8. So in this snorkel video I only filmed with standard Hypersmooth. I had tried it at 2.7K / 60fps on land and it was a disaster in darker areas. Seems like GoPro still has these problems. What resolution did you shoot in and what happend with your footage?
@@DiveDiscover I have some recent footage I shot using hypersmooth 2.0 high and it seems the primary object appears stationary for the most part, but surrounding objects move around quite a bit. I saw others using hypersmooth 2.0 On (not high) that looked much better so got some footage yesterday using that and will check it out.
Ah, understand. I think that was quite the same what happened to my land shots. Let me know about your results while using just "on"! I have no possibilities for checking this out...
@@DiveDiscover so when you filmed in 4K you set hypersmooth to on ? How long can you record in 4k (i mean about battery)
@@OLO_Babolo The GoPro battery will last for a about an hour when you shoot in 4k/60 - Hypersmooth on but no "Boost".
Hello, Thank you for this nice and interesting video of Abu dabbab snorkeling. Please do you use gopro color or "flat". I have also bought the goprohero8 blanck and I take some view of djibouti underwater with "flat" (my first and only use because of covid) and I find the color rendering very pale. Please, what are the selected modes?
Hi and thanks 🙂 Abu Dabbab was awesome 👌 Well, I select "flat" when I'm underwater with the GoPro. Did you do a color correction? You will find my whole standard GoPro underwater settings in my GoPro 7 vs 8 video (last third). I use these settings for scuba diving as well as for snorkeling.

@tsarabanjina That's sad to hear. I guess you did use some kind of auto-grading or preset from the software? I never use any software automatics, they're a mostly not very good. Abu Dabbab vs Makadi Bay? Really hard to say. Abu Dabbab offers you a great reef with special marine life and the chance to see the Dugong (didn't see it), many turtles and special rays. The Makadi Bay offers you more reef and you can snorkel with the current (long distances and much to see) just stop and walk back the beach...that's not possible in Abu Dabbab, you have to snorkel back. Can't decide for a winner, both are great 👌😊!

Hi, there ist no fixed place for the turtles. Sometimes they can be seen near the beginning of the bay (1-2m deep) or further out (5-10m). Maybe 10-100m from beach. Have fun in Abu Dabbab! Great place...

Hi, I would say yes. In Abu Dabbab the coral reef starts right up from the beach and the bay has always a very calm sea. But for snorkeling with kids I would consider about buying a snorkel vest for kids or anything like that. Just to have it mentioned 🙂
