Beautiful end results but that curly oak is insanely wild!! The old saying at a former technician “ some days you get the dog other days the dog gets you “ as long as you’re getting the Dog 90%+ you’ll be fine.
Add a set screw to your nut at the end of the mandrel. Similar to using a reversible chuck like a nova G3, you need a set screw to hold it from backing out off the threads. Would make your life a lot easier.
For future use if you still have problems you might consider drilling and tapping a hole in the bushings so you can use grub screws to lock them in place. They shouldn't be affected by the back and forth rotation. Or perhaps you can get bushings ready made with lock screws.
I have some Ash limbs from the trees around here that where cut down, I’m going to cut them into some medallions and burn some Christmas pictures on them. Gifts for everyone 😁👍🏻
Hello again James.......Another great video......I too turn a lot of things on the lathe, although mine is not leg powered......just wanted to say the curly whit oak is very interesting loookin and was wondering where you got it from because I would love to get my hands on a couple pcs to turn some pens also.....another thing.....When using the steel bushings, I always wax mine before applying CA glue to it.......just one easy roll with a razorblade on the bushing close to the wood will cut it very easily and then it slides right off.......it sure beats chipping the CA glue trying to break it off.
Watched How To Make Pen Rockets by The King of Random right after this, then thought of this. Wood there be a King Of Random collab? Or wood you never Grant that?
Personally I prefer the white oak one. The curl in that piece of oak is just so classic looking and beautiful. Great job, my friend.
I think I am in the same boat thonas!
Lathe! Lathe! Lathe!
Love this series. I actually build a spring pole lathe myself after seeing your build series.
sweet man. love to see what you make with it!
Congratulations on having your lathe mentioned by Shannon Rogers.
I did not see that where at? probably on wood talk. I am so behind on that one.

Sweet! I did not get to get on that one.
Curly white oak for the win!
+Dan The Maker Man oh ya!
They came out great. I could not help but think how folks use to use these tools before electricity. Thanks for sharing.
right on! so much knowledge that is lost.

LOL yup. thanks Thom!
Just beautiful!!!! :)
+Myra Wright thanks Mom. You will have to come make. Pen.

+GamerByt3 that is an interesting idea?

+Steve Crane that is a cool idea. I might have to play with that.
looking good(and always having fun) cheers...rr
thanks Richard!
Awesome job James! 👍👊
thanks Fred!
So pretty and shiny, I may have a try at a letter opener when I get my Beaver/Rockwell restoration done and running
Sweet man. it is a great fast Christmas gift

sounds like a great idea
Those look fantastic. It appears your catching the "turning bug" again...
LOL yup i thought I developed an immunity last time but this spring pole is bring me down with a whole new case of it!
Hard work but great result. I would definitely have given up on the ebony
thanks Peter!

good idea. I get my curly white oak from the fire pile. most of my lumber is farm cut so you can get all the wild stuff most people throw out.

LOL that would be fun!
Those are cool. One for each hand to use on the keyboard to open e-mail?
lol yup!
good Stuff James.
thanks man!
Did you try using double nuts cinching them together? It will prevent the unscrewing I think.
I did not even think of that. might have to give it a try.
This is exactly what I do. I have two of the knurled brass nuts
"kitty-wompus" technical term for not straight. lol
precisely!
wood different diameters on the mandrel give you different speeds on your lathe? really like how the ebony came out
yup. the bigger the diameter the slower the RPM.
Do you think a lock nut would help on the end of the mandrel?
it might but I think I am going to try a second nut next and lock the two together.
Uhh, I think you got that quote backwards. It's "the pen is mightier than the sword"
I dont know what you mean LOL
But are the green fields (sward) mightier than the sword?
now, if only you had some letters? What's a letter any ol' way?
LOL yup those are the things stickers come in!
