Check out the Retro Sonic Eight o eight overdrive. It's a TS style but has a bass knob inside. Also, you can pick between asymmetrical, symmetrical or LED clipping.
The stock GT-OD sounded the best, it produced tight but fat-sounding tones. It's perfect for mid boosting high gain amps for tight but huge sounding chugs. I used to use the GT-OD before switching over to VFE Focus. It worked great for boosting my Crate BV150H for Slam, and Brutal Death Metal. The ZW-44 and SD-1 sounded a lot similar. They both sounded harsh, fizzy, and thin to my ears. I've never been a fan of the SD-1 and didn't like ZW44 either. They thin out the guitar tone way too much for my tastes.
does the JHS Bonsai really have enough variety between all of the different circuits to set it apart from other tube screamer style overdrives? i'm trying to decide between the Bonsai and the BOSS SD-1w Super Overdrive Waza Craft
Those two are quite different like Tube Screamers and SD-1s in general. TS = symmetrical clipping, more mids etc. SD-1 = asymmetrical clipping, a bit less mid honk etc.
The SD1 kind of blends well with the Marshall amp, its like you're using the drive chanel from the amp, which is more natural sounding, unless you're looking for a modern refined sound overdrive then mxr is the pedal for you, for me it's the SD1 rawness & natural is what i like.
NOT FAIR! Its a marshall! Any drive u put through is going to sound good ie A BOOSTED MARSHALL. Ur not hear shjt of the pedal compared to the amp. Try all of those on an amp that has BIG DIFFERENCES and u’ll be making crucial choices
My favorite was the MXR GT-OD. Sounded super meaty and aggressive. Almost like the TS808, but a little more aggressive. All then others were very similar, but a little too bright and thin. I have an SD1 and it's the same. A little too bright. But i like it for certain parts... classic 80s. But GT-OD sounded good on everything.
Hey ! I just bought the SD1 today and I still get the original MXR Zakk Wylde. Not really the same. Both are greats but the MXR seems to have more dynamic, low mids and low end than the SD1 which seems have a little bit more high end and grain.
Ah! 😎. I had two and the other was set to basic and the other to the ZW mode and I’ve used both on albums & tours. Both does the job but just with a bit different flavour 👌.
I used to have a GT-OD and I never realized that it had an internal switch to make it a ZW-OD, that's pretty cool. I thought the SD-1 sounded best followed by ZW-OD
Pepita was feeling a bit uncomfortable because he had the image of the overdrive over his head :) This time the mental notes were not as good as usual.
I don’t have any Maxons but I used the producer Jacob Hansen’s Maxon 808 Deluxe on the latest Cyhra album and if I recall correct it sounded quite similar than TS 808 👍😎.
My preference for overdrive and Tube Screamer pedals all depends on what i'm looking for. If i'm playing through a guitar with pickups that already have a tight, focused, and aggressive sound to them that make them sound great for high gain rhythm playing straight out the gate, then i'll usually just throw a tube screamer in front of whatever amplifier that i'm using just so i could preserve the natural tone of whatever amp and pickups i'm playing through, but giving them both just a bit more of a push than they'd have if they were unboosted. When it comes to super loose sounding pickups like the Seymour Duncan JB, Bare Knuckle Warpig, or even PAF style pickups, i really love to boost my amps with a Boss SD-1 in order to give whatever pickups i'm playing through a nice treble bite, while simultaneously making them hit the front of the amplifier harder than if i just went straight in. Overall i really like both methods of boosting different pickups into high gain, but at the end of the day i kinda wanna lean more towards boosting super loose pickups with an SD-1 for a couple reasons, but those reasons can be summed up with the SD-1 preserving the low end of super loose pickups, and adding a treble bite similar to a set of metal oriented pickups like an EMG 81 for example. Unlike the EMG 81 however, because of looser pickups being more dynamic as they are, you're able to hear a major difference in your pick attack compared to something like an EMG 81 or a Bare Knuckle Black hawk, DiMarzio X2N, etc. With all of that being said there are advantages and disadvantages to both types of overdrives, and both types of pickups. At the end of the day, the only thing that matters is what works best for you as a guitar player.
i'm trying to decide between the SD-1w and the JHS Bonsai. would you say it's worth having a variety of tube screamer circuits available to the point where the Bonsai is worth it, or do i really just need one really solid one like the SD-1w waza craft super overdrive? the bonsai would be twice the price, but it has 9 circuits versus the 2 circuits in the SD-1w.
@Farvadude I think having something like the JHS Bonsai gives you a great opportunity to mess around to experiment with different overdrive circuits and allows you to listen in on the idiosyncrasies that differentiate the circuits that the Bonsai has. I think the JHS Bonsai even has the original OD-1 circuit too, so it would be a great option to have for boosting an amp. You also can’t go wrong with the Waza SD-1, as the Waza pedals all have a switch that changes the tonal characteristics of your pedal, so you’d also have a wonderful option for boosting your amp with that as well.
@@oris81 If my memory serves me right I once came across a mini Boss SD-1 clone made by a Russian pedal manufacturer named Yerasov. I don't the remember the name of the pedal though. It was yellow and had the word "volt" written on it.
@@EugeValovirta230V another question. Do you use the noise suppressor loop and inputs through the effects loop of amp? Or loop the pedals? Where is it in you signal chain?
It’s after the OD pedal just to get rid of the hiss that ODs in general produces. I don’t use that much gain so the amps are almost dead quiet so no need to put anything in the loop.
I have gt -od and sd1 i switch between 2 some days i like sd some days gt od. But for high gain stuff i prefer gt od it has more bite with marshall dsl100hr head ...
And no guitarist has ever said that to me. Just the opposite but I guess there’s the first time for every thing 😁. Thanks! And of course it’s always also about the player. Hey, that’s built to every player’s DNA 😉. If you claim otherwise you’re just lying to yourself.
SD 1 wins IMO. More open, more "natural". I used it with a jcm800 in dropB for death/grind stuff and it's incredible!
I agree 🤘👍
Let's say he was feeling a little "overdriven" by the overdrive :)
Yeah! 😁

I like them all a lot but mostly use the SD-1 👌.
Your Swiss studio looks exactly like the old one! ;). Sounding great, thanks for using our IR pack!
Yeah! Why fix if it ain’t broken 😊. It’ll look different in due time 😁
MXR sounded best.
Yeah, I'm leaning towards the SD-1 also... cRaZy, so cheap yet so effective! I dig your channel, man... cheers!

SD-1 Hands Down but I love the OD so raw and low end, would love to try it thru a Engl Savage. Then MXR GT-OD.... Brilliant video's mate, I'm hooked.

Depends on musical style. Sd1 - smooth, Mxr - tight, zw - huge bottom end. All are great. For me, standard mxr sounds best.
Indeed 🤟.

I guess they both do depending on the occasion.

Yeah something like that 👍😊. But both are in the same ballpark IMO 👌
Agreed 100%. I have both, and love both, but I feel that the MXR has more depth/texture when using it to drive another box or amp
very cool review! Which pedal do you prefer? GT-OD or GT-OD in Zakk mode? Greetings from Argentina!

Ts808 into sd-1 into marshall, both ods as boosts with low tone. I use that into my JCM.

@@EugeValovirta230V yep its to kinda get modern sounds.

@Malcolm Reynolds because Mooer pedals are way more small and light than Boss ones.
