John Sweeney’s passion for investigative journalism is something else. The insight into Putin’s path to university was new to me and fascinating, it explains why he was a gangster from day one, like when he was an assistant to the mayor of St Petersburg and already massively corrupt.
In between University & St. Petersburg, he was a junior KGB clerk in East Germany where he fully participated in the massive KGB Black Market trade. Goods from Western Europe passed through his office daily. No wonder he was upset the Berlin Wall fell. He had a good life there. Those skills eventually got him to the top in government.
@@KileyLagan yeah, I knew about his time in east Germany where he was supposedly an adviser to the Stasi, when you think what the Stasi and the KGB were doing in east Germany at the time like supporting the Red Army Faction and funding neo Nazis in west Germany it’s no surprise to see the tactics Russia now uses in its propaganda. The story you often here about how he became president after Yeltsin is he was trusted to not arrest (or worse) any of Yeltsin family for corruption but there’s good reason to believe it was a proverbial gun to the head rather than trust and Putin and the FSB effectively organised a coup. The mafia culture, particularly in east Russia is not something you hear much of in the western press and this was the first time I’ve heard of a direct relationship like that with Putin.
I suspected he was bullied as a child, he's got the classic compensatory mechanism and he's got the look of a hurt child, constantly imagining himself and Russia as victim while he is the abuser. Apart from being physically weedy, he was also illegitimate and adopted into a family at the age of 9. So he was marginalised and an outsider and has been faking it ever since.
I think it was in John Sweeney's book that I read about Putin getting held back from the KGB to start with because of some undisclosed (by the authorities) issue. Searching for "Putin kisses boy's stomach" maybe hints at another dark aspect of his past.

Excellent interview with this man John Sweeney. Time well spent. Thank you Times Radio for this. Sweeney's assessments of Putin I couldn't agree with any more than I do. He's right on. It's obvious he's well corroborated his own theories, and thoughts on the subject. In addition he's gone into these places and witnessed that of which he's speaking of so instant respect there from me. As for Vladimir Putin, I watched for many years dating back to when Yeltsin appointed him as his successor, and even before that. I knew that Putin as a former KGB operative was never comforted by the fall of the Soviet Union, and how it had fragmented. I knew it had to have had a profound impact on him as it truly was, " his family ". This was so easily to be seen. This was a guy, and an eventual Russian leader that could never be trusted. Yet, I watched him manipulate, and navigate the Western World, American President after American President, along with other naive Western European leaders presenting himself deftly as a world statesman. For me, when he fixed his earlier, " election ", by appointing Medvedev to the Russian Presidency, and then Medvedev appointed him to the Prime Minister position, that just confirmed for me where this was all heading. He attained the confidence in knowing how easily he could shape the West. I believe this was all around 2004. When after his half hearted charade of a democratic electoral process re-installed him as the new Russian President. President Bush stating, ' I looked into his eyes, and could see his soul ", literally made me nauseous. I knew what we had on our hands. I cannot believe we permitted ( we meaning all of the West ) this guy to continue to operate unabated as he was for all of this time. I knew I just couldn't be the only one out there knowing this. In listening to John Sweeney here, I believe now that perhaps I wasn't. It provides however no relief. Now, we've absolutely got to clean this mess up. Together, right now. @@linmal2242 Do you really believe that! The KGB is just one of the security and intelligence structures, the KGB was not only engaged in leading people to execution. After the collapse of the USSR, Russia, sacrificing its own development, remained for a long time a raw material appendage of Europe, while the profit from the sale of raw materials with the help of a corrupt oligarchy remained in England. And you've always been silent about it. At the same time, NATO was the first to begin its expansion to the east, which Russia has always perceived as a threat. What reaction did you expect? Now, when Russia is trying to reunite the Russian people, unfairly divided during the collapse of the USSR, Europe and the United States are supplying Ukraine with military equipment. Why didn't this happen during the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of the Germans? You supported the breakup of Yugoslavia, and Europe supplies Ukraine, in which 20% of Russians remained with their territories that did not belong to Ukrainians before the collapse of the USSR, with weapons. Because for you, Russians are second-rate people.
13:57 “ Putin is bad but not mad”. I wouldn’t take too much comfort from this. Bad could well mean that Putin has zero empathy for even the closest people in his life, and if facing his own downfall and/or death he may elect to destroy as much as possible in his way out. Hopefully his generals will not allow it.
No-one seems to be suggesting that comfort should be taken from awareness of existing realities. Indeed, it is only through awareness and acknowledgement of the realities, including that foremost reality of the potential for nuclear war, that the response can be determined. It is only by acknowledgment of and facing such realities that appropriate responses can be developed. Nuclear war is only a much l;arger reality than war fought with conventional weapons. The reality has to be faced in whatever form it takes. Just because nuclear weapons are threatened definitely does not constitute a reason for capitulation. I’m not sure age is as much of a factor with Putin as it is with someone who on the surface is exhibiting signs of age-related issues like Biden. Except Corbin, he stood up for Putin.
You make it sound like the Ukrainians had a choice and chose to stand up to Putin. If Putin had minded his own businesses and stayed on his side of the border the Ukrainians would have done nothing to counter what Putin has been doing for decades. You can admire the Ukrainian grit in this fight, but people need to quit making them out to be some bastion of democracy that threw down the gauntlet to save the West; simply put, they were unfortunate enough not to have chosen to join NATO when they had the chance (like Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, etc.) and found themselves as a testing ground between NATO and totalitarian regimes in the East. Nothing more, nothing less.

Sweeney got fired from the BBC for creating false evidence for a documentary.
So people will lie to themselves , It’s called an illusion you guys are living. John sweeney in his beautiful orange beanie so happy to see him here!
Great interview! Very engaging and i found myself engrossed in the story and by the end i was fully invested and onboard. well done Times Radio!
Yep, John Sweeney is a great man. I didn't think I would make it all the way through, but he had my attention throughout the whole video.
There is a Guardian article dated 5 March 2000 if I remember correctly about Russia's war crime in Chechnya which describes the incident mentioned here. It's awful. The Russians gave the convoy permission to leave and then bombed it.

@@anthonymorris2276Excellent observation,.......Although who did what to whom is debatable !
So,........... Mr Sweeney somehow missed the 'Heavy Metal' on the border of the Donbas in the previous 8 years before his version of this conflict started when nightly bombardment was carried out by AZOB terrorists.
Somehow he also missed the Military Build Up of Ukranian Forces which were to be used to overwhelm the Donbas and assert control of this region which is what provoked the 'Invasion' by Russian Forces.
@@thomscott1247 really? Was that the reason?
I thought it was because they were going to join NATO.
Or they were developing biological weapons.
Or they wanted to get nuclear weapons.
Or the government was full of Nazis (especially the Jewish President)
It's more convincing if you come up with the reasons before you start the training exercise that's definitely not going to become an invasion that's followed by the special military operation that's definitely not a war that starts with the (failed) attack on Kyiv that was definitely a feint.
Either way, God forbid they should prepare to get rid of foreign backed separatists on their own land! After all, Putin would have never invaded and annexed a former possession of Russia that didn't want to have anything to do with them! No, he'd let them go on their merry way!

Thank you,

In fact, I believe, the very opposite applies, which is a more determined return attack on the perpetrator.
