    I had this exact drum for many years but, it got damaged in a move so, I sold it. made many recordings with it, LOVED the way it sounded !!! but the build quality was just mediocre (welded seem) Few drum have ever held a candle to the sound of it though. one of the very best sounding snares I've ever recorded. this is the drum that made me buy a case for every snare I've bought since! I wish pearl would re introduce it. great vid Dave ! keep it coming! \m/

    "You don't really need to hear a 14x8 cranked up, because... Why would you do that?". Absolutely loved that.
    The snare sounds incredible.

      Why WOULDN'T you crank a 14x8? It's literally a Free Floater for that reason. I think I missed something there? That EXACTLY what I would do lol 🤣🤣 The damn thing doens't really open up until you do just that IMO It's 8" deep!!

    That has been the main beauty of choice of master drummer Gene Hoglan for the last 30 years and what he uses on basically every album he has done. They are hard to find now. If you can find one the price has skyrocketed for becoming sought after.

    I bought a 1st generation free floater (used) in 1986/87, and used it until roughly 2000 as my hard rock and metal snare. First off... what you have there is indeed a 1st generation. 1st gens have hexagon lugs as opposed to round. Mine is a 14X6.5 steel version made in Japan and it's never been "great" sounding. I've always wanted to check out a brass shell on it, but have never done so. Having an 8" deep brass version is a very cool thing. I will say that your butt plate is different than mine. The strainer is identical, but my butt plate is fixed, with no adjustment. You also have cost hoops, and mine came stock with Super Hoops. I'm wondering if this is actually a shallow marching snare version??? Thanks for sharing. the other thing that's kind of a drag with these, is the fact that since the snare wires are so specific... Puresound wires for it cost double what your typical Puresound wires cost ($40 USD).

      I never really knew much about these drums, I just aways remembered them from the catalogues. This particular drum, it's nice, it's playable, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone had hot rodded it at some point.

    Gotta love 14x8s and free floaters. All in one even better.

    My older brother left me one of these,is in nice shape,he played in NY City in the 70's and 80's,this snare I have is a pearl,just like yours but it has no pearl markings or serial number on it,hardware rings have nothing on them,drum is seamless,I find this odd,could it be a prototype given to studios before it was for sale to the public? I play it everyday,sounds great,wish I knew more about it,my brother has passed on and I can't remember where he got it but I have had it since 1999.

      From memory, all that info is on the badge which is stuck on. If that fell off then I don't recall any other identifying info on the shell etc, so that might explain it.

    I have this exact drum .. a bit dusty now, I'm not that much into cleaning .. should I sell it? I think I probably will, it's too heavy to be carting around to gigs.

      I've had many people mention that drum to me. Everyone seems to love it. I think if you're carrying a drum to gigs anyway, it might as well be a good one.

    Any thoughts on how much this snare is worth? There's one for sale on Craigslist near me and the seller is asking $350 for it. It's got new heads and everything appears to be in excellent condition.

    • @DaveBatemansShed
      @DaveBatemansShed  4 роки тому

      I'd say that's probably not a bad price. I got mine for the equivalent of a lot less, but then mine isn't in excellent condition.

    Mr. Batemans hello, previous to your 14x8 aquisition, was it the only one for sale at that time? I am aware that they are RARE and quite hard to track them down. I have been trying to search it online not just on eBay, reverb website as well and I still only find aluminum maple shells, unfortunately. In the UK is there an accessible 2nd hand popular website?
    I would appreciate your feedback. Have a pleasant week!

      I must also share that'll I am experimenting new sounds, and I believe an 8" is louder than a standard 6.5" shell, which I was actually planning to acquire before I discovered the 8" from the late 80's.

    • @DaveBatemansShed
      @DaveBatemansShed  4 роки тому

      Hello! Sorry for the delay. I think it may have been the only 8" brass I've seen, may be one other, I cant remember now. There's been plenty of 14x6.5 drums, but not many 8s. I got this from ebay which is where I normally look. There and Reverb. The only other place I would usually check is Gumtree really. If it was me, I would keep looking on ebay as that's the biggest website.
