This week we decide to find a place to camp right in the town of Custer, SD for the ease of finding fresh water, dumping tanks, close to restaurants and being centrally located. During the week we only have about 3 hours each night to explore the area and having a good central location really helps make better use of our time. We share some beautiful scenery, experience a leak around the AC unit when it rains and show the easy fix and then…we rent a Polaris Slingshot to take along Needles Highway. I haven’t been in that area in years - you guys gave me the itch to go. Maybe next year since this year we’re headed to northern Arizona and southern Utah - around the grand staircase Escalante in September. Love the slingshot - looked pretty wild to ride/drive. Stay safe.

The Wildlife Drive is spectacular for sighting Bison, Pronghorn, Prairie Dogs, Ducks, and those very adorable Burros! Sometimes Elk or Deer are also seen as are game birds.

When I heard your GPS I wondered why? We went thru those roads in 1978 without a GPS. They weren't invented yet. Never got lost. Drove over several forest service roads during our 9 years living in Rapid City.

My favorite summer place - the Black Hills. We often stay in Custer State Park. Blue Bell is a favorite campground. Legion Lake is where our departure was delayed by a bison enjoying a meal on our porch side on getaway day! Great hiking and biking.

When we stayed at Custer, we took the Iron Mountain road to Mount Rushmore for the evening lighting ceremony. Very inspiring... Coming back on Iron Mountain in the dark, we got a frightening closeup view when going around a corner of a bison. It was snuggled in the ditch against the mountain with its whole head lying in the road. We barely missed it.

Sylvan Lake and Custer State Park are awesome! We rented kayaks on the lake a few years ago and it was a great afternoon! Custer State Park should be a National Park!

We were in the Black Hills in 2020. The Needles Hwy is awesome.
We did Sylvan Lake last week, the week before the Rally and it was so busy we couldn't find a parking spot. Drove thru the lot and that was it. Looked like a great place to visit. Maybe next time. The Slingshot looks like fun. Needles Hwy was like a parade with all the motorcycles and vehicles. But the Black Hills are so worth the visit, busy or not.

Great video, we were there last September, stayed at Rapid city rv park, it's up on a hill and you look down over Rapid City, we remembered many of the roads and tunnels, the black hills, the badlands and Sylvan Lake, my wife lived out there when she was stationed at Ellsworth AFB, your video brought back good memories, thanks for sharing, travel safe, hope you went to Devils Tower..
We did not get to Devils Tower this time. Hopefully the next time we go back.

We love that area! Have been twice but would go back in a moments notice! Would love to try a slingshot but we have a jeep...we stayed at the nearby Bismark Lake campground and liked it. I love how your videos give me ideas for things to do next time. 🙂

I’ve enjoyed your videos this and last week of SD. I was there last September and had a great time. Watching is like I’m visiting again. Love that area. Didn’t see any Purple Pie again this week. I stayed at Rafter J Bar, it is a great place too.
Awesome video, Black Hills is amazing and Custer State Park holds a special place in our hearts. We spent 5 summers in the Black Hills workamping and off road riding! Great editing job, one hand slap though, you did not have any eye protection when driving the slingshot! I am surprised Adventure Rentals didn't advise you to wear eye protection. Lots of great places in Custer. Hope you tried Beggin Burro!

That water leaking is very disappointing...
GT, we understand you have been going back and fourth with trying to decide what Class B to buy and have had a lot of concerns and doing a ton of research. As mentioned in the video, “this is typical with a van” and is not a big deal and was very easy to take care of.
We want you to be happy with whatever you decide on, but don’t talk yourself out of something that may be your best option either. ALL RVs will have little issues here and there regardless of the make.

But a new unit at this level should not have this problem!
Any new unit can have this happen GT, because the torque specs on these is SO LIGHT, that it doesn’t take much of constant movement. It’s not a product fault.

We just left that area 2 weeks ago, loved it! We domiciled in South Dakota, so we will definitely be back! One of the lodges located in Custer State Park, has a really nice restaurant; nice ambiance and the food was really good! It is Blue Bell Lodge on the wildlife loop. Maybe check it out when you come that way again.

Oh yes, I’m ready to head to the Black Hills, just not during the heat and solar activity. You both looked pretty comfortable in the weather though. Hmmm. That was some beautiful scenery and the air looked so clean and clear. The colors were certainly vivid. FYI, I ordered the motion magnetic lights from your link on Amazon and we LOVE them!!! Thank you for sharing and posting them for us. Next thing I need is a large hanging magnifying mirror with metal so the lights will stick to it. Was the one on your Amazon link magnifying? Us girls need to look good ya know. 🤩

We kept our eye out for you but never saw you anywhere. We come to Custer every summer. We stay at Heritage Villiage right below Crazy Horse. 34.00 A night buy 5 nights get two free. Full 50 amp. And water and sewer. 2 miles from downtown. We stay here every yr. Right on the Mickelson Trail and highway 16. The Black Hills keep calling. There are so many beautiful places to see here, tucked away off the beaten path. If you ever come back here in the summers, look us up. We'll take you to see them in our Jeep.

If you have covered this before, please point me to the video. How do you get good cell service in the west and how do you know ahead of time if you will have good coverage? Thanks.
Well, the first time we traveled up the west coast from CA to WA was in 2019 when we had our class A. At that time, we only had Verizon on our cellphones & didn’t have very good coverage in Oregon. We used to check out Campendium for their reviews of campgrounds for cell coverage and look on the campground website to see if it was mentioned. Then we added a Netgear Nighthawk router for AT&T coverage in 2020 and used that and our Verizon hotspot on our cellphones. We also added a third option when we got TMobile service through TravelData using their own router. Having those 3 definitely helped wherever we went because we always had at least one with good signal. We just added Starlink satellite as our 4th option because we knew we wanted to see more national parks and remote areas and knew it would be better than our other 3 service providers. We’re still testing the Starlink for RVers service but if it proves to be a great option, we may drop one of the others, maybe. The downside of Starlink is having to setup & put away the satellite every time we move. Not a big deal especially for longer stays but can’t have it on the roof while traveling. It’s hard to say which ‘one’ service provider would be the best because it seems they all have good and bad locations. For the west, probably Verizon & AT&T.
A/C leaking from rain? Or condensation produced by the unit?
It only happened when it rained so it wasn’t the condensation from AC. And it hasn’t happened since this fix.
Ok, but it’s a brand new unit and leaking.
This was an easy fix and hasn’t happened since.
