  • At one time, an abundance of Olympia oysters and Pinto abalone in Puget Sound provided an abundant food source for Indigenous people and created a dense habitat supportive of marine life. But pollution, overharvest, and habitat loss have decimated both species. Now the Puget Sound Restoration Fund and NOAA’s Conservation Hatchery are working collaboratively to rebuild the species in different parts of Puget Sound. Producer Annabel Cassam has more on the work being done to restore these valuable species that support the marine ecosystem.

Really good to see another oyster restoration project in action - In the England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland and France major efforts are being made to reintroduce natural oyster beds, along with sea/eel grass, kelp etc - we are with you, There are oyster producing farms, but long term for coastal protection and clean water the natural beds are best!
