An ingenious proposal for scaling up marine protection | The Nature Conservancy

  • Island and coastal nations need to protect their waters to keep the oceans healthy. But they often have lots of debt and aren't able to prioritize ocean conservation over other needs. The team at The Nature Conservancy sees a way to solve both problems at once: restructuring a nation's debt in exchange for its government's commitment to protect coastal areas. Learn more about how "Blue Bonds for Conservation" work -- and how you can help unlock billions of dollars for the oceans. This ambitious plan is a part of the Audacious Project, TED's initiative to inspire and fund global change. (Voiced by Ladan Wise)

    *Protecting coastal ares* from commercial fishing is very wise.
    Those are the areas that produce the most fish in their early stages of life.
    Later on the large fish go into deep ocean and then we can fish them there.

    • @cel2460
      @cel2460 5 років тому +1

      It will need some work in the parliament tho, and lot of sensible planning.
      This method assume that lack of funding due to high national debt is the core problem to marine conservation activities. However this problem usually happen in small island, developing states (SIDS). To state that Indonesia's marine conservation problem is solely due to debt is kind of a stretch, as marine conservation is, like the video stated, complex. Thus, we first need to indentify what is the problems and challenges in indonesia's marine conservation effort.
      However, i like the idea of alleviating debt on order to fund conservations as money from the central and provincial govt. is often used for other things (improving education, healthcare, etc.) first. The implementation of the video's solution might work if we address parts of Indonesia (apart from provincial boundary, for example kei islands, tanimbar, etc.) as pseudo-SIDS, in which investments can directly be given to these islands without complicated regulations from the central govt. Tbh idk if we ever can do it, law students might help more and that area.

    • @phxeko
      @phxeko 5 років тому

      Err I'm not really proficient in the technical details, all i know is Susi has banned some fishing tools that can damage the ecosystem, Jokowi is very ambitious on building the infrastructure with debts and also issue government bond whatever its name is, if it can issue a bond in name of ocean or even forest (+ orangutan species due to palm oil) is more important (subjective) , it's kinda good but then again I'm not sure about anything :p

    Its november 2022 and just seen an article about Reef Brigades and the insurance purchase in Hawaii. As long as what you rebuild makes the best waves ever, than I am behind it. But it cannot in anyway remove or reduce shef spots. Sounds stingey, but surf tourism creates money. And of course the safety reefs provide to the islands and the wildlife is also quite important. And most all surfers respect that stuff naturally. Great idea-i hope it works and doesnt turn into some Scottish Titles scam or something like that.

    better idea - make the reefs profitable and therefore self sustaining. Like entrance fees for national parks. The chicken, cow, and pig are not going extinct any time soon. One idea might be to create eco resorts along coastlines where the draw for tourists is the viewing of natural habitats. You can have nature walks where the guests can do beach cleanups as an activity. You get the picture. Because if people care enough about nature to force government to pay for it, then they will pay to protect it themselves. And if it pays for itself, then you don't run the risk of losing the protection when the political climate changes.

    There should be conservation responsibilities undertaken by all human kind, especially ALL fishermen in the world. Eg. For every net of fishes caught, they must rear the baby fishes from the eggs of their catches by at least 30% and release them into the sea. On top of that there must be at least 2 or 3 months of 'NO FISHING MONTHS' or 'NO FISH EATING MONTHS' especially during breeding periods as being practised by some countries, excluding high tides or storm seasons. We must respect all living creatures even though they are human foods and respect its rights to continue its continuation or descendants. Can the world accept these actions like during Covid19 lockdowns. Its GOD's wild fire and calls to ALL NATIONS. Heed HIS calls before its too late.

    A couple of points.
    Not everyone wins, the 1.6 billion dollars is a lost income for the loangivers. They might fight back, if it becomes a trend.
    Protecting and preserving coral reefs is great and a worthwhile endeavour, but it's a bit like the panda-effect. It's easier to get funding for a cute animal, than a less-cute one. Coral reefs are the same. We shouldn't just protect the places that look great on camera. There are also reefs and critically endangered habitats in colder climates.

    This is a cute idea and all but it wont work. Magically getting lower interest rates are much more complex then 'getting a deal on debt'.
    Low interest rates fundamentally is an indicator to the value of the Currency. Currency is a commodity subject to supply and demand. High interest rates usually means there is a high demand for a limited amount of Currency that can be 'sold' as debt. All Markets are like an Auctions, with the highest bid being the winning value of exchange. You have to factor in the Turn Over Rate, the amount of times a dollar exchanges hands in a year, to figure out if the Currency Supply is healthy or not. Take those 2 factors into consideration when assessing interest rates and what you will find in today's Global Currency Markets is that the value of the dollar is so low, that we have Negative Interest rates. Inflation is greater then the interest rate meaning in nominal terms, you can 'make money going into debt'.
    Unbelievable I know.
    So to get a Country, which likely has some of the lowest interest rates in the markets, is only further going to speed up the failure of the Currency itself and will one day become worthless. 100% of all the 1000's of Fiat Currency's in our history has Failed. Banking on the health and well being of our Marine Environments should not be subject to a system that is about to collapse. At best, this 'solution' will be temporary.

    so...what you're saying is....the nature conservancy is actually a $6 billion goldman sachs investment fund and the $$$ hard working ppl are donating instead of say taking $22 million to pay OFF the debt of these island nations + helping them solve these issues you're extending their debt for profit by not only making them pay-- countries that can't afford to?? but making them pay for longer? so ehhhh what happens if say they default on the debt what is the collateral does goldman sachs i mean the nature conservancy now own the island

    “Throwing money at it”? That won’t stop the effects of rising ocean temperatures, acidification, etc. Some things are beyond an economic fix.

    But what about Europe that finance overfishing with public money? What about stopping these kind of subvention first for a start? It's not money that is lacking, but political will.

    Why not forgive debt in proportion to proven replenishment of any coastal stretch - after successful implementation xyz dollars can be forgiven? This bond thing sounds like yet another scam!

    Whoever came up with this idea may know a lot about conservation, but I guarantee he or she does not have a major degree in economics. This stands zero chance of raising enough money to do any good at all.
    On the bright side, just wait thirty years and the next ice age will do the work for you.
