To be fair to Army im pretty sure it was just their dumbass punter trying to show off. If a coach ever called a fake punt on 4th and 40 up 35-7 I think they would be lynched
It wasn't a designed fake. It was a bad snap, which normally gives a punter the idea to run with the ball because they don't think they'll be able to get the kick off after recovering from the bad snap anyway. The punter just couldn't overcome his natural instinct to run when they had 44 yards to go for the first. Definitely dumb but not a called play.

Dropping the ball (or slowing down, or changing how you are holding the football) as you near the goal line is something that certain types of young men do because style is far too important to them.
I always ask, how has this not been coached out of the game by now? Players far too concerned with celebrating and showing off, despite the fact hundreds of thousands of people have scored touchdowns in the history of football. You aren't anything special. I'd make my team hold onto the ball until they run out of the back of the endzone.
As an LSU fan I love to remember that play against Ole Miss. Les Miles was most likely the WORST coach of all time when it came to clock management. I'm so happy that we have a real team of coaches now.

I will never understand the thought process of dropping the ball before crossing the line, and then looking dumbfounded when the play is shown on the big screen for all to see,
So with the LSU thing shouldn't the play clock start and the 1 second remaining shouldn't start till the ball is snapped? If I'm wrong though are you allowed to bring on the field goal unit and kick a field goal while the chains are being set. The only way possible is wait for the official to start the game clock and snap it right away.
To answer your first 2 questions, no and yes. The play resulted in a first down, which temporarily stops the clock if time is under 2 minutes in the 2nd or 4th quarter. This is the point where the officials move the chains and spot the ball. Once the ball is spotted and the head ref blows the whistle to start the next play the clock will restart. LSU can't spike the ball as they tried to do because it requires at least 2-3 seconds to be run off and there was only 1; they were better off either having the offense as they are stay on the field, line up before the whistle and immediately run the next play once it's blown, or take them off the field and get the field goal team on. Had the clock been stopped because of a timeout or something else, the play clock would be a factor and the 1 second remains until the ball is snapped.
